Whipple Procedure for Pancreatic Cancer: Treatment Goals and Recovery

In the classic Whipple procedure (pancreaticoduodenectomy), the surgeon removes the head of the pancreas, the first part of the small intestine (duodenum), the gallbladder, part of the main bile duct, and a portion of the stomach. In a pylorus-preserving Whipple procedure, the pylorus and a small part of the proximal duodenum are preserved when this is considered oncologically and technically appropriate. It is considered for selected pancreatic head tumors when the disease can potentially be removed completely and the patient can tolerate major surgery.
