My husband resists meds, doctor recommendations. Undiagnosed and making risky decisions.

I have many tools but feel alone and vulnerable. Anyone else in a similar situation?

Welcome It’s hard to know how to handle things before a loved one is diagnosed and it’s easy to feel live your over stepping. After diagnosis I felt more justified in taking control. But in reality the diagnosis doesn’t really change anything. They are not suddenly less capable after diagnosis. I would do what needs to be done to keep him safe. Do things behind his back without telling him. If he finds out and gets angry, apologize, tell him you were trying to be helpful. We have a saying here, never try to reason with a person with dementia. If he shouldn’t be driving, tell him the car had to go to the shop for a factory recall (or whatever you think might work). If he is spending money for nonsense, take the credit card and let him think he lost it. If he won’t take important medicine talk to the doctor about crushing it and adding it to his food or tell him it a vitamin. Many with dementia have anosognosia and are not able to recognize their symptoms or limitations. Bringing these shortcomings up is a recipe for trouble. Good luck

If you have not already see an attorney and get a POA for financial and medical decisions. If possible find one who specializes in elder law. They can greatly help you moving on in this journey. I changed all my DW’s and my accounts to secondary login verification to my cell phone. I also put a lock on her credit card. It hurts doing it but, I don’t worry about her going online into our accounts. I also put a freeze on her credit report so she doesn’t open another card on her own, although at this point I don’t think she is capable of doing it. Told her she couldn’t drive because her doctor said she couldn’t due to the medication. Doesn’t ask about it anymore. Good luck.
