Timeline

Hi all, I know there is often a lot of questions regarding timeline of different stages on here. I have been documenting my mom's progression of early onset alzheimer's and I thought I would share. For context, she has no other health issues, and is 64. Hope this helps someone!

Late May/Early June

—Has began needing help with ADLs. Help w/ dressing, showering, but not consistently. Restlessness, wandering, exit seeking. Sleep schedule is somewhat regular. She was sleeping 12+ hours a night but usually less than 8 now.
—Mobility issues, harder for her to get up. Walks with a limp most of the time.

—Speech is mostly incomprehensible.

Early July

—Back to doing most ADLs by herself. Still sleeping. Wandering some but less aggressive. Started her on Rexulti, but this began before that. Eating less, but when she does eat it’s almost always finger foods. 6 months ago she would make herself food, now she only eats when food is in front of her. Leans when walking. Gained probably 10-15 pounds.

Late July/Early August

—ADLs (showering, getting dressed) need help all the time, and now help in toileting. Occasionally wets herself. Very drawn to sugary foods. Seems like she is speaking less. Agitation seems to be coming back. Wandering, but gets tired more easily. Having trouble getting up sometimes. Napping during the day a lot.

Mid to late august

—Noticed coughing when drinking once. Still napping a lot.

Late august

—Coughing more frequently/aspiration on water when taking pills. Wandering (at least outside the home) has pretty much stopped.

Early September

—Significant tremor in hands. Switched to wearing depends as urinary incontinence increased.

—Doctor put her at 6D stage. Lost the weight she gained between now and her last appointment 6 months before.

Late september

—Occasional episodes of fecal incontinence.

Sorry you are dealing with 'this'… yes, a lot of us use the DBAT scale for stages, and you are correct that the timeline can vary.

The saying is 'If you've met one person with dementia, you've met that one person with dementia.'

How sad this must be for you to watch your mom decline, esp. since she is so young. I am sorry.
