Help with not eating
My mother has virtually stopped eating. She has lost nearly 50 pounds in the last 4-5 months. Her eating has dropped to maybe a half cup of food maybe twice a day. She a is still active and very independent including cooking for herself and my father. I need help. I have tried everything I can think of. Where can I turn?

I have So Many Questions..
Hi My mom was recently diagnosed with Dementia. She has visual and auditory hallucinations. She is very suspicious of people and even think everyone is trying to kill her. We moved her from independent living to assisted living and she was not happy about it at all. We had to keep her safe and get her more help because she…

Deception but not the usual topic
my mom has dementia and I've well read on the topic of the tendency to lie to fill in memory holes, or confabulation. I cannot find any material on this behavior: We will giver her a plate of food and ask her to be sure to eat it all. Total of 4+ ozs between all the items so not a large helping by any reasonable gauge.…

Cups and silverware
Looking for recommendations on cups and silverware for my mother. Mom opens every cup I have purchased. She flips, twists, pops….whatever it takes to get the lid off. Not entirely sure why she’s focused on that but I was hoping there are some recommendations on mugs or cups etc. Silverware- I have seen adaptable silverware…

First-Time Poster Requesting Support
Hello to you all. This is my first time to post in the forum. I have been reading a few posts that may help me with my father. At his most-recent visit with his neurologist, we were told he was at stage 6B of Alzheimer's. We have been living with what we were told was dementia for several years, and the Alzheimer's…

The End of Alzheimer's
Hello, i'm new here. Months ago, my husband asked if i'd research Alzheimer's for him. He's noticing some congnitive decline. i resisted but then this book came to me: "The End of Alzheimer's" by Dr. Dale E. Bredesen. i read it and am 1/2 through his next book: "The End of Alzheimer's Program". i'm wondered if anyone here…

Choosing identifiable & simple food
I realize this depends on the stage, but have you had success serving food that is easy to identify, one at a time? I see that finger foods are discussed elsewhere in the forum. I've read the suggestion below, on serving food and eating tips and this may be related. I noticed PWD was interested in spicy condiments lately…

When I'm away, Dad doesn't feed Mom
My Mom has pretty advanced dementia, Dad less advanced, I live with them to take care of them. Mom would stay in bed and not eat if I didn't feed her; Dad can get himself some simple food like cereal and ice cream; I make or buy them both real food. I tried to hire in-home care for Mom a few months ago, but Dad chased away…

Recently Diagnosed MCI - Questions Posed
Invite your thoughts on my take on MCI diagnosis: having been diagnosed with MCI and experiencing what seems to be a downward progression, having researched pretty thoroughly it seems to me that the best thing(s) I can do are: (a) exercise daily; (b) stay engaged with others - i.e. don't isolate; (c) pursue natural…

Hint: preparing food in oven is less stressful
I cook most meals for PWD, unless it's takeout. I found that using an oven causes fewer problems, since using a cooktop will often encourage PWD to "help", which causes more problems and poses danger. With an oven (let's say it's baked cod on a sheet pan), you can quickly prep, put into oven and wait until done. While this…

Choosing an acceptable meal or menu
I ponder whether to ask a PWD what they want to eat, or whether I should just choose what is healthy. The former brings some joy but may not be healthy. The latter may be good for health but a person may dislike it. Ideally, you can find something that meets both needs. I understand that the sense of taste or smell…

Refusing to eat/doesn't like food

Just starting journey…
My MIL has not been formally diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, but her mother had it and we have no doubt. She lives with my FIL, and we just went to visit after about 3 months absence. I had my doubts that she knew who we were before, but now she absolutely doesn’t know us. She calls us “hon” as a general catch all. She does…

Problems chewing
Hello everyone. I’m new here. I care for my grandma with dementia. She’s 97 (98 in April) and is in surprisingly good physical shape for her age, but her mind is going more and more. Recently while eating she forgets to chew her food before swallowing and it gets stuck. She ends up throwing up little bits at a time until…

Mom seeing ghosts
Hi everyone! I am new and this is my first post. My mom was diagnosed about a month ago with Alzheimer’s. She lives alone and is on Medicare which does not cover Alzheimer’s care. She is seeing ghosts and wants them to leave and to not argue I’ve asked the ghosts to leave, etc. but she says she still sees them and that…

Adjusting to the decline & hospice
Hi everyone, we have a nurse practitioner coming to the house next Friday and then the week after that we'll be having a virtual visit with his new physician. I've also been in contact with a hospice/homecare group for about the entire time he's been home. She checks in on how he's doing, and she recommended this new…

Irritation with Father in law/dementia + dysphagia
Hello lovely people, My husband and I stopped into the memory care center where Father in law resides. It was about 30 minutes from lunch time. My Father in law just wanted a hot dog in the worst way. He is, by the way, on pureed food. Anyway, I could not distract him but my husband did, so I walked out of the room and…

Swallowing Problems/ Late Stage ALZ
I have a feeding tip for those caring for someone with late stage Alzheimers that have swallowing problems. This strategy helped my mom tremendously. I'm thinking it might not work for everyone, but it is worth trying and I hope it could benefit some of you. My mom was diagnosed with Alzheimer's August 2020. The disease…
