Common Terms
Are you new and feeling lost when faced with online jargon? Check out the following terminology to become more acquainted with the ALZConnected® community.
Username, also known as Screen Name: This is the name a member chooses to be addressed by within the community. This should not include any personally identifiable information (PII), including your name, address, or phone number.
Avatar: This is the profile picture or icon a member chooses to represent themselves within the community. Users can select a new avatar from the existing icon library or upload their own photo. Note: please exercise caution if using your real photo.
Message Board: An interactive website which allows registered members to read, write, and respond to messages by other members. Messages are sorted by topic (also called threads) in Discussions.
Discussions: Sections within a message board categorized by topic. Each discussion has a list of topics.
The discussions on our message board include:
- I Am Living With Alzheimer's or Other Dementia / Vivo con Alzheimer u Otra Demencia
- I Am Living With Younger Onset Alzheimer's / Vivo con Alzheimer de Inicio Más Joven
- I Am a Caregiver (General Topics) / Soy Cuidador (Temas Generales)
- Caring for a Spouse or Partner / Cuidar de un Cónyuge o Pareja
- Caring for a Parent / Cuidar de un Padre
- Caring Long Distance / Cuidado a Larga Distancia
- Remembering Those We Have Lost / Recordando a los Que Hemos Perdido
Post: A message written by a member, which is then submitted as a new topic in a forum, or in response to a thread. Only registered members can post.
Reply: This is a response to a post another member has written.
Quote: You can highlight a portion of another person’s posts when responding to them. This way members know what you are responding to and can follow your post.
Topic and Thread: A discussion between members. By starting a new topic, you are also starting a new thread.
Links or Hyperlinks: A website URL address that will lead you to a new web page. Often these are highlighted or underlined.
Reactions: Reacting is a feature of the ALZConnected platform that allows you to show your approval for a post. Currently there are three options to react to a post: like (the thumbs up), care (the heart), and insightful (the light bulb). These can be used similar to on social media platforms to show your approval of a post.
Badges: Badges are a feature of the new ALZConnected platform. You may notice that you received a badge for commenting on threads or having your discussion posts receive reactions. Badges are showcased on your profile automatically.
Links or Hyperlinks: A website URL address that will lead you to a new web page. Often these are highlighted or underlined.
Announcement Posts: An important topic or thread shown at the top of the discussion page where it was posted. Announcements remain at the top of the forum topic list. These announcements contain important information which each member should read. Keep your eye out for new messages.
Groups: ALZConnected allows for users to create their own groups. Though we always encourage conversations to be out in the open across our Discussions pages, there may be times where members want to congregate about specific topics. For example, caregivers in the "sandwich generation" may want to create a group where they can talk amongst themselves about the difficulties that are associated with raising children and caregiving for loved ones living with Alzheimer's or another dementia.

LO = Loved One
ES = Early Stage
EO = Early Onset
FTD = Frontotemporal Dementia
VD = Vascular Dementia
MC = Memory Care
AL = Assisted Living
POA = Power of Attorney
