I know I Shouldn’t Feel Guilty

Mum is in late stage dementia a d I left her for 10 minutes in the kitchen yesterday and she fell. My brother and I pit her in bed and gave her half a Seroquil. About midnight she had to go to the bathroom and I had to hold her under her armpits to get to the bathroom. This morning it was worse so we called an ambulance and had her admitted. Good news no broken bones. But I left her at the hospital without saying goodbye because I couldn’t go through that scene. I moved back to the family home in ‘99 to help my mum take care of my father after a spinal cord injury. And I haven’t spent a night apart from her since then. I guess I’m going through a lot of separation anxiety. The last month things really went downhill and if I was out of sight for more than five minutes she would get scared. She was pretty doped up on Adavan and Seroquil when I left and I just called the nurses line and they said she was a little confused but hadn’t called for me which I was glad to hear.

Was I supposed to do something for people to respond? I don’t feel much love here.

I think it's fine that you left the hospital. She was safe and getting care, and you needed to step away. It's great that you recognized your own needs. You're doing the best you can.

Good luck with your mom. I know it’s not easy to have to care for her at that level - I’m not there yet, and I know being a full time caretaker is an enormous pressure. Especially if she’s that attached to you. Hopefully she is ok back at home now.
