We'd like to find a good CELA in New York State.

Some questions:

  1. Do you know one you can recommend, or a good resource for finding one?
  2. What should we do to prep for our appointment once we find someone?

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

Be careful. There are only 400 CELAs in the US. Many lawyers hold themselves out as experts in elder law, and they probably know a lot, but they're not certified. We were lucky to find a CELA within 20 miles of our house.

In both states that I needed a CELA , I got a small number of recommendations from the local Alzheimer's association. What I said was, "I don't want someone who has paid to be listed on the website, I want someone from your own list that you keep, that people have worked with and been happy with the results ." The director of the local chapters gave me 3-5 names and I looked them up and googled them and checked them out on the CELA website and had some phone calls.

In both cases I ended up with very good people who were sympathetic, knowledgable and generous with their time.
