Vermin Rat and Mouse Problem

About four years ago California's Governor Newsom banned rat and mouse poison replacing it with birth control in an effort to save the mountain lions and wildlife.

Unfortunately this has created an increasing epidemic of vermin. The entire neighborhood as well as others I speak with locally are suffering.

This is exasperated when you have someone with dementia hoarding boxes of collectables and feeding them for some reason. Our father is intentionally leaving food out for the rats and mice and gets ravingly upset if he finds traps we set. This infestation is terrible.

Unfortunately we are unable to tend to this problem until after he dies.

Can you play Barry White music and set out little trays of rat birth control pills in cheese balls?

Seriously, you need to get a lawyer , with a history of being on APS , etc radar having a professional guide you will save a lot of time and money long run. With the vermin and electrical hazards code enforcement may be next and if they red tag the house it will be very hard to care for your father and repair the structure, plus expensive. Check with your council on aging if they can refer you to a legal clinic , pro bono lawyer etc.

If you wait for something big and worse to happen then APS could then swoop in and take control of your Dad's assets and care . Then to get control , have a say in his care or even see him in the future will require expensive litigation and months in court. You don't want this.

Thank you for your understanding and empathy towards our situation.

In our case, we have taken every legal step possible to secure the care and treatment our father needs. We have a pending conservatorship/will document drawn up by an attorney, which is a crucial step in ensuring his well-being. However, this document requires the signatures of two physicians, and our father has refused to visit a doctor, making it difficult to move forward with this legal process.

Having gathered a folder and put together a website of evidence pleading for help several times now. Spoken with law enforcement as well has APS regarding the environment. They seem to have no issue with the current situation and won't help unless it progresses.

We are now waiting for an ambulance visit to the hospital, which would provide us with the opportunity to seek further assistance in managing his care. Once we have the necessary medical documentation, we can proceed with obtaining the required signatures and finalizing the conservatorship/will.

We appreciate your support and understanding as we continue to navigate this challenging situation. If you have any additional resources or advice for dealing with unresponsive authorities and legal hurdles, please don't hesitate to share them with us.

Take care, and thank you once again for your concern and offer to help. We're grateful to have a community like this to lean on during these challenging times.

P.S I especially love the visual thought of Berry White candles 🐭 🕯️ 🐁

Things I learned that don't work.

    1. Sound deterrent. The high pitch ones that mice and rats are supposed to hate.

    2. Old glue traps you found in the garage. Sure they work in the warmer seasons, however once winter hit in our unheated home. They got to firm in the cold. The mice just walk over them.

    3. Homemade poison using baking soda and peanut butter. It's supposed to get them due to the fact they can't burp. Well, that's what they say anyways. I haven't noticed anything aside from the free meals I'm giving them.
