Another Let Down

Just venting my frustration. We found a Dementia Support Coffee Group, held once a month at Brothers Leagues Club, held in one of their small meeting rooms, it has an attached kitchen and is on the ground floor surrounded by gardens and trees. Lovely. So each month we would go, meet up with people and their carers. Then we got a very well behaved little puppy registered and trained as a support dog. We have been asked not to go, our puppy isn’t even allowed to stay with me outside in the garden. I checked with our Council they said the puppy can go anywhere and we take him to the shopping centre, hardware store, and restaurants and coffee shops. I’m so disappointed and feel so let down. Another group that doesn’t really understand about support and the isolation we have to suffer it makes me cross and sad. Dementia Support Group bah and humbug!!

oh wow, that is disappointing . Sorry to hear this

Oh no! That is such a shame. I would think that everyone there would enjoy having a visit with your little puppy. You probably could fight it, but then the organizers might be so unpleasant that it wouldn't be worth it. Sorry…it sounds like a good social activity, which are so hard to come by. 😡

sorry that they didn’t allow the puppy. On another note, did or has the puppy helped? Because I’m considering doing the same.

Emotional Support Animals are not covered by the ADA, only actual service animals, and really the only area an ESA are protected is rental housing. But it's sad this group won't work with you; that really seems counter to their mission of supporting families dealing with dementia. I'd send a letter explaining how they have let you down and why you aren't attending anymore. They should consider whether their policies are actually inclusive to PWD.

That's such a shame. I take my Sadie, an emotional support dog, when I visit my DW at her skilled nursing facility. Most of the residents there welcome and like her. I am considering adopting another adult rescue dog to keep Sadie and me company.

Everyone did enjoy having a puppy there. The joy on their faces when they cuddled him was terrific. I could fight it but one particular organiser was not pleasant and I no longer feel happy about going. Social activities are very hard to come by.

I can understand your frustrations, however if I were at that group with my DW and you came with your puppy, we would have to leave due to her severe allergies.
