    @Marchbanks

    I hope the Ozempic helps with this. I have heard great things anecdotally.

    We went around and around with dad's actual diagnosis. Undiagnosed, because my mom blew my concerns off for a decade, we ended up in the university medical center ED with dad in the middle of a psychotic episode after mom left him for a week to attend a funeral. The chief neurology resident suspected WKS and drew the bloodwork and started IV Thiamine immediately. The attending neurologist said "garden variety Alzheimer's" when the bloodwork came back "unremarkable" and turfed him to the outpatient Memory Center. The neurologist there ordered a specific PET scan to look at the way the brain uses glucose and based on that and the pattern of his performance on cognitive testing was comfortable diagnosing him with WKS and Alzheimer's. He did improve considerably so long as he was abstinent after the IV treatment, but deteriorated quickly once he started to drink again.

    Dad's death certificate lists Alzheimer's Disease and Aspiration Pneumonia as COS with WKS listed as "contributing".

    If your wife likes red wine I have diluted it with cranberry juice (about a half and half ratio) so it tastes less watery and a bit more fruity for my mom. She loves it and while it doesn't get her as buzzed as fast, in her mind she is still "having a drink". Additional bonuses…she'll probably never get a UTI. Lol.
