My mom is 91 and has had early onset of dementia for the last couple of years. She recently got a UTI and has since then gone into a place that I do not even know how to cope deal with or even have a conversation with her. I have her at a skilled nursing while I figure out how I can either a bring her back home with me or b do what I need to do to get her the qualified care that she needs. My question is how do I talk to my mom? She is so confused about what is going on. She has her bag packed everytime I go up and then gets mad because I’m not bringing her home with me. She continually asked for my father who has been dead forever 15 years and why he hasn’t come to get her. I can see the heartbreak in her face, not understanding what’s going on and why we’re just leaving her there and I just don’t know how to comfort her can somebody please help me

My suggestion would be to meet her in her world as much as possible. Tell her your dad is busy and couldn’t make it, but said to tell you he loves you. Tell her you wish you bring her home but… the doctor says she needs to stay a bit longer, there are problems with a leaky roof at the house, whatever you think will make sense to her. Follow that up by redirecting… I brought you some ice cream, your hair looks nice today, it’s such a beautiful day how about we go outside for some fresh air…
