She is gone

My lovely, wonderful, brilliant, public spirited wife died yesterday. She was 73. and had had Alzheimer's for 15 years. I described our journey in these pages and the end was peaceful. I held her hand as her breathing went shallower and shallower and finally stopped . Our two daughters were with us. She was as lovely as ever. Thank you all for being with us on this road

Crushed, I am so sorry that you and your family had to travel this road for so long, but glad that your wife has finally been freed from the ravages of this disease. I have followed your story since joining this site a few years ago, and know the added pain when remembering how brilliant and talented our loved ones were before the disease grabbed hold of them. May you and your daughters find peace and joy in the loving memories of your wife and their mother.

What a blessing it was peaceful and you were all gathered . Thank you Crushed for sharing the news now, and through all the years you shared not just the Alz journey but even more the love affair you've had with your wife. Your devotion to your lady was touching.

Crushed, I echo all of the other comments about how much you cared for your wife and how vividly you described her. For me, entering Stage 8 was — and still is — a whole new type of grief that took me by surprise. After all the years of grieving I thought maybe it would just be a relief, but instead it's a deep and sharp sorrow for what my DH was when he was well. Please keep in touch and find comfort and support.

It was "the long goodbye", but no matter how long, none of us are prepared for the emotions that arise when they leave us. Her memory will always be a blessing.

Crushed, my condolences to you and your family! It's been such a long hard journey for you and your wife. You both fought it brilliantly and courageously. When I joined this group, your postings were among the first to help me through my darkest days. Thanks for sharing your journey with us. Please take care of yourself and visit us from time to time, if you wish. I miss, and very much envy, the "old" timers who have moved on.
