I smell poop
Today started early because we had a dentist appointment an hour away. Dad was already up using the bathroom at 8am. So I explained that we need to get dressed and change diapers. I gather items to bring then look in to find Dad went back to bed. I wake him and say we'll be late. Now he switches into slower mode. When we are finally on the road, there is an accident on the 101 that blocks the left 2 lanes. Note that among the items packed, I brought a snack of pineapple cake and banana for Dad to have in the car.
Fast forward to post dentist visit, Dad expresses how hungry he is. Instead of the back seat he used in the morning trip, he wants to sit in front. On the way to the restaurant, I see the banana and cake in the back. I tell my Dad that I brought that for him, but he didn't touch them even though he is complaining about being hungry.
At the restaurant, Dad only seems to eat half or less portions before asking for the bathroom. After a long time, he reappears and we go to the car to start the trip back home. This time Dad wants to sit in the back. Something smells. As we drive 2 blocks, I remind Dad that we have spare diapers, and change of clothes. So if necessary we just change clothes in the bathroom. Dad gives his agreement in acknowledgement. However, it becomes obvious the whole drive back that an accident took place.
When we arrive, Dad steps out of the car with poop in his shoes. I go ahead to open the door as usual, but decide to grab the floor mats from the bathroom to make a path from the door to the bath. After Dad steps inside, he removes his shoes and uses the shit-socks to wipe the poop stains in the doorway. I tell Dad to go to follow the mats to the bathroom. He agrees and points to the kitchen, even though I repeat that he needs to go wash in the bathroom. He answers that he can wash in the kitchen sink. I repeat that I put the mats to lead into the bathroom in order to save from having to clean the carpet, and he needs to follow them to the bathroom. He finally understands and says that's all I needed to say.
I find gloves under the sink with a cleaner 405 spray bottle, and pull several paper towel sheets. At the front door, I throw away the shoes and socks. At the car, I throw away the floor mat. Then use the paper towels in to wipe the floor of the rear seat spraying the 405 generously.
I drove to TJ to get beer and snacks, worried the whole time I smelled bad. Back in the apartment, when I go around, between kitchen, or living room, I smell poop. I smell poop opening the fridge. I smell poop sitting on the sofa. I smell poop microwaving food. I smell poop.

oh my!! My first thought is that you can’t reason with someone whose reasoner is broken. Your Dad needs help toileting like a toddler being potty trained. He can no longer follow directions. He can’t remember where the bathroom is. Such a terrible disease!

I went through this many times with my dad. It is awful. I know your feeling and no amount of febreeze gets rid of the scent. I felt like it was always there. The sadness comes in that this horrible disease has taken his sense of reasoning and he no longer knows what would normally have been so second nature. I don’t have a magic solution but just know you are not alone in your feelings and prayers are being said for you!

so sorry you are dealing with this. I’ve had my times with the “poop”. The lack of personal hygiene skills baffles me. I wish I had the answers for you but this whole situation really sucks. Know you are not alone. I’m constantly washing my hands when at mother’s house and I use paper towels to dry them. I can’t trust that poop wasn’t wiped up with a towel. Hang in there. It’s rotten situation.
