Ron, that is a remarkable advancement in spinal surgical technique! You won't have to be concerned with tissue rejection from a cadaver.

I went to the market today and purchased a box of oatmeal. After I returned home, I saw that the box had already been opened! Why would somebody do that? I mention this as a reminder for us all to be sure to check that all boxes, bottles and jars and other packages are sealed before we get them. We can't be too careful.

Iris - I'm glad you're doing better after the food poisoning.

That's a weird thing about finding the earrings on the floor like that.

Lorita - You've wanted another Great Pyrenees from the beginning. Like Beth, I really think you should follow your heart on this one. I think another GP would be good for you and Stormy.

Beth - I really wish I had your green thumb! I'd even settle for a pale green thumb!!

Ron - I'm sorry you're going to be going through all of that. But wow, I had no idea bone technology had advanced to where it is now. Just amazing.

JeriLynn — Those little baby goats are so cute!

We made it home from Charleston last night. It felt good to get back. We'll be going back in two weeks to a month to move my s.o.'s mom into assisted living. We have a phone call with the assisted living director later this morning to work out those details. She's resigned to moving, but doesn't want to move (it's a very necessary move), so we'll all be there to ease her into her new apartment.

Morning, that is amazing how they do your surgery now Hopefully, recovery time is shorter, too. Sounds like you're on top of things.

The babies are beautiful, JeriLynn. I would love to have one but can't-they would.not be safe from coyotes.

You all know me well, I hope Kate or Mike can find another Pyrenees for me. Guess I could get a small dog until we find another Pyrenees. Stormy really liked Barclee..

Iris, that is awful. I'm careful about checking lids and boxes. When I get a bottle of pop out of a refrigerated box I never take the one in front. Reason is years ago someone injected a bottle with some kind of poison and someone got it and almost died. Guess I think it could happen again and it would be in front.

Pretty day here and tomorrow. Rain Friday afternoon.

There was a book called "Century of the Surgeon" about 1960 describing all the advances in surgery since 1860, when surgeons called the smell of pus "the good healing smell" because all wounds got infected and they didn't know what it was. With the advances since 1960, it's time for another book!

Those are some cute kids. The black and white one looks like a skunk (a beautiful animal IMO).

GG, glad you got home safe and weren't deported or something. Also glad your SO's mom is moving without too much of a fight. My mother said she wasn't leaving her house until she was carried out, and that's how it was.

    Good morning.

I'm doing okay today, but one of my travel mates is in the Emergency Room now with dehydration from the food poisoning. She's being dehydrated.

JeriLynn, the kids look very healthy and alert. Are they nursing well? Do they catch on quickly or do they need help? The kids at the goat farm I was at were fed from a milk bucket with nipples attached.

GG, moving is anxiety-provoking for everyone. But I have the idea that once your MIL gets settled, she will love being in her new home, where she will get to be taken care of.

Iris, little calves are fed with a bottle when something happens to the mom or if she doesn't have enough milk. Those kids at the petting zoo were probably bought specifically for that purpose so without their moms had to be bucket or.bottle fed.

We used bottles 99% of the time. I could feed two at once with a.bottle on each knee. Once we had three to feed so we used bottle holders. I always enjoyed having a bottle baby.

Sometimes it takes a while for a newborn to latch on and needs help. You worry when the cow is calving, then worry until the baby stands, then worry until you see him nurse. It can be stressful but there is joy when the calf nurses and all is okay --The life of a rancher. I miss all of that even though the girls are here I don't deal with that now I just enjoy seeing the new babies.

You could Judith. You have a big yard. I?'m thinking about a small dog, too.

Iris, not to belabor this but we worried because we had Brangus bills who weighed over 2000 lbs. Also had mosty Brangus cows but the bulls threw big calves so there could be problems. We spent a lot of time with them and we kept a chart, the best we could, of when a cow should calve. We got them up one or two weeks ahead of time so we could watch in case there was trouble.

Mike has smaller, Angus.bulls so the calving isn't that much trouble but they do check them. The first year after I sold our girls he moved 19 heifers in. Heifers have more trouble calving than cows. I checked them at least once to twice a day and still lost four babies. Now I don't know if there are lost babies or not.. Still worry though and watch if I see a cow by herself-always will, I guess.

not worried about the yard…..I do not want to trip over over one or get up to let one out in the middle of the night…lol

I am just now remembering Barnaby…a white standard Poodle from Houston….a git from Dick. I wanted a black female and got a white male….sigh. Anyway that dog was on a leash next to me for probably a month. Afterward he stayed close by me until he died. He was a great dog. Flanagan came next from the same kennel. The next dogs were rescue. One was another standard that we had to rehome because we could not provide enough activity. Then came Tootsie who was small. I consider small dos to be pets, not dogs. Luke was the last…85 pounds. I would never have another large dog at my age.

Hmmm…noe of that was really very interesting but a break from trying to understanding financial literacy.

I thought it was interesting. Had no idea you had had so many dogs. I'm not worried about tripping over Stormy- but Sammy, the cat. He runs in front of me and lays down. The next dog I get will be trained to get into the car but Sheena used to get into the Mercury which was lower to the ground and she was younger. Good night, everyone. She even got up into the PU a couple of times at the vets.

Lorita, I'm sorry if I wasn't clear, the kids that were fed with the milk bucket were at the goat farm. The petting zoo did not have baby goats. Here is the milk bucket.

My senior cat Adam is always underfoot. It finally dawned on me that he is always underfoot because he wants to be close to me. He's the only cat I've ever had who's been so attached.

    Time for bed. Good night.

Good morning all. We had another freeze last night. My cherry tree's blossoms are winding down, so not the end of the world but the magnolia is just starting to bloom. The magnolia is almost a month early; I usually get a fall rebloom but it's not as striking with the tree leafed out.

Iris— I'm glad you're feeling better. Is Adam your Siamese? Where and when are your next travels?

Ron— I'm glad you're all cleared and that you'll have help as needed. I agree with you— hospitals are full of sick people— it's best to get home asap.

Jerilynn— Congratulations on the triplets. How many babies do you expect this spring?

I'm curious, do you have a master list of names prepared rather like they do for hurricanes or are the names derivative of the parents or do you wait to meet them and decide?

Gothic G— Another trip in 2 weeks. Yikes. Any chance to dodging the blow-up mattress. We have one as an emergency bed used if someone is really sick. It's not so much uncomfortable at first but the room temp mattress makes my bones ache in the morning.

Here's hoping your MIL is still cooperative around the move when you return and that she acclimates easily.

Carl— I hear you on road work season. Between pop-up pothole repair crews, utilities maintenance and construction projects the term "you can't get there from here" comes to mind. Driving home from PT Tuesday was ridiculous; normally we drive straight on one of 3 arterial N/S roads in the county. We hit a detour which led into another detour, we took a back road and hit some tree crews. The most ridiculous of these is related to the installation of ADA compliant curb cuts at several intersections. Normally I am all-in on accessibility projects, but there is posted no pedestrian crossing at 2 of the 3 sites and only one has a sidewalk leading to it and only on one side of the street.

Today is quiet for me. I think I'll tackle some laundry and fix a decent dinner.

Yesterday was very mom-centric. We were supposed to pick up her new hearing aids at 12:30 at Costco. She lives 20 minutes south of me and the Costco is 25 minutes west of me, so it requires backtracking. I suggested she join BJs or Sam's which are near her house, but if I have Costco, she's gonna wanna have Costco, too.

I had to bring her so they could be programmed; I would have to collected them anyway and she had her rebate check to spend, so off we went. After running the gauntlet through various construction zones we made it on time only to find that Costco was paving half their lot which meant circling for a spot and parking as far from the building as was possible. Once inside, mom declined a cart. She always does this. "I'm only getting a couple of things, I can put them in your cart". This never ends well but she promised she wasn't getting much— "just coffee and some maple syrup". I left her with the hearing aid people to get things off my list and she asked me to get her some toilet paper, Kleenex and paper towels which pretty much took up the entire cart meaning I had to go back outside and get myself a cart. At least she's predictable.

It turns out Costco replaced rather than repaired the hearing aids which would have been great. The only glitch was that the pair wasn't matched meaning we have to come back next week. The tech said he'd ask to have them overnighted given the error which means I could get them when I bring her to see her psych on Monday. Her psych is just across the street which is handy.

Morning, HB, Your mom is really a shopper? I think she enjoys it.

Partly cloudy and sort of cool here. Ordeted my groceries to be delivered late afternoon. Had thought about going in for feed for Billy but only one script is ready so will do that in the morning. Billy was out grazing late yesterday and this morning so glad he's getting green grass.

Iris, my Sammy may be craving attention, too. I will try to stop and pet him when he lays down in front of me.

My air mattress is a Thermarest. It inflates itself and is warm. I can and have slept on a pile of rocks on that mattress. Not cheap, but worth it if you do a lot of camping in tents or on floors. My wife gave it to me about 35 years ago when I camped frequently and I love it.

    Good morning.

HB, I got a chuckle out of seeing your mom's "few things". The reason I stopped shopping at Costco is because I have no room for the huge quantities that they provide, such as are in your mom's cart. Does she keep supplies in her garage? I don't have a garage.

Simon was my Siamese, Adam is a Norwegian Forest cat, from what I can deduce.

    1000002840.jpg

When I was a child, we only knew about alley cats, we didn't know there were different breeds of cats.

I will be leaving next week for Italy. I won't be traveling with my travel club, but with a different group.

Carl, I don't think I've ever slept on an air mattress, but my last hotel mattress was so comfortable. They must be sturdier than regular bedroom mattresses. I'd like to get one.

    @Iris L.

Mom does have a one-car garage and a small accessible attic space at the top on her stairs. Paper products go upstairs. She loves to shop and especially for what she perceives to be a deal. Hence the Kirkland TP. I have no idea why she needs so much, girlfriend has a top-of-the-line Toto Washlet bidet that does everything but sing her to sleep. I get the paper towels, though, for some reason her cleaner takes the unfinished roll when she leaves. No idea why. It makes mom crazy. I told her to think of it as a tip.

The cat is gorgeous. I googled traits of the breed and it seems there's a lot of overlap with Maine Coons.

Italy? I'm so jealous. What cities are on your itinerary? You remind me of my friend Jan who travels as much as you do. She's in Vietnam at the moment and will go to Cambodia for a week after.

Judith and HB, this is a gastronomic tour of Italy. We will visit Florence, Milan, Cinque Terre, Portofino, Pisa, Tuscany, and the Northern Italian Lakes. This is a fully guided tour.

Judith, what places do you have for me to visit?

HB, I used to have a Maine Coon cat. They are supposed to be large cats, but my Maine Coon cat was petite. I named her Seven because she had seven toes. Maine Coon cats are known to be polydactyly.

    Morning.

Iris, most of the babies figure out how to latch on pretty quickly. In the case of multiple births, or sometimes even with first time Mamas, we watch them closely to make sure Mama is letting everyone nurse. By nature, if Mama doesn’t have enough milk, she may reject the smaller baby and that’s when we step in to pull the baby out for bottle feeding. We check on them multiple times a day. Mama gets extra fortified feed to sustain her and milk production.

HB, I wait until I meet the babies to name them. Gigi is named after Gothic G. Rationale? She’s gray and she’s a girl and her eyes are very mysterious looking. Her baby is Gal. Because she’s a sweet gal. She’s nuzzling noses with the new babies through the fence. She’s always very gentle with the new ones.

I think we have 8 more expecting. Sadly, there are no “Mikes” around here anymore; a Vet that will come to your farm. We do have a large animal clinic about 30 minutes away. I took Speck the chicken there and had a good experience. But most “doctoring” we do ourselves. Pepto Bismol and Pedialyte are staples as are injectable antibiotics. And I have a fully stocked wound care cabinet.
Lorita is absolutely correct about farm animals. As a former nurse, it’s just like with people when you’ve done everything you know to do and still lose the battle.
That’s probably more than anyone wanted to know about goats❤️

I gotta get busy. In the midst of a month long trip I am having my master bathroom shower tile replaced for the 3rd time. Thankfully the builder is using a different tile guy🙄

Have a good day everyone ❤️

Good morning. Sunny and warm today here.

JeriLynn— 8 more expecting? You'll be busy. It's a good thing you have the background you do with no house calls available. I have no idea whether there are any around here. There are a couple dairy farms about 5 miles away and several large stables just north of here so maybe. Do you have a sense ahead of time how many babies that'll be?

Iris— I love the cat pictures. Seven reminds me a bit of mom's late cat who was inaptly named "Sugar". Not sweet at all, IMO. She was part of an oopsie litter with a Maine Coon mom and some rando. Sugar was good sized looking but only weighed about 13lbs which would be the same as my old Persian male.

Ron— Fingers crossed for the x-ray. It's probably for the best that you're admitted after the surgery so professionals can have eyes on you. But I can understand wanting to be home.

    _____________________________________________________________

Today is my last PT session. I'm graduating! I've gotten to over 120 degrees of flexion which is an excellent outcome. Now if I could only sleep. I'm looking forward to some free time. I want to go see my bestie's grandbabies who are just adorable. Bestie babysits twice a week and they're a lot for one 70-year-old so she's happy for an extra pair of hands.

I forgot to mention the interesting thing I saw Tuesday. On our crazy detour to get home, I was gazing out the window and saw a meteor which was pretty cool. At the time, I wondered if it was a satellite train but none of the launch dates matched. Then I saw this :

I hope all have a pleasant day.
