It's 88 here with heat index of 100. I.haven't been outside but it is.hot and partly cloudy. We may have some rain tomorrow. I know farmers and ranchers are cutting and baliing hay so probably don't want rain now.

Trying to watch some of France and Spain. Seems like an awfully lot of running is involved with little scoring in soccer.. Spain is ahead 1-0.

Talked with Carol a while ago and she had a weird text message a few days ago in what she thinks was Vietnamese. What is going on?. Checked my balances again and everything Is OK.

Iris, looks like they're having a heat wave up north. Hope it breaks before your trip.

I will be taking a break tomorrow. Casino time with the Senior Center Carl goes to. I’m actually in South Springfield now and the Center is in North Springfield. Once I am settled in completely, I will need to make up my mind if I’m going back to it or the one closer to me.

Have a good time tomorrow, Ron.

I checked the caladiums today and even with the rain they were dry. So decided I would water them and fill the water tank. Billy was in the lot trying to get a drink so.got to feed him+ First time I've seen him.after the first day the girls came home. he is really big and pretty. If you all remember my.old avatar of the bull Jasper, Billy:s dad, by the pond, that is how Billy looks- big boy.

Going to watch Lawrence and go to bed. Good night.

Have a good time at the casino, Ron.

HB, we used to have a ficus tree. It grew until it reached our 8' ceiling and was bending, so we cut it down. It was in a pretty large pot by that time.

I just got home from a trip to Branson to see "David" at the Sight and Sound Theater. Pretty good show, and we stopped for BBQ on the way home.

We expect storms starting around midnight and continuing through tomorrow. It's 77 degrees now, humid of course, and clear.

Judith - did you get the wordorigins site to work for you?

Iris - I went to the wikipedia page on corpse flowers. Wow, that is one weird and interesting plant. And humongous. Did you go see it? I'm not at all sure that I would.

HB - Thanks! The A Way With Words link looks fun.

I hope your dentist visit didn't end up with any 'areas of concern.'

Lorita and Judith - stay hydrated!

I went to the gym today (on my own), did a couple of miles on the treadmill, push-ups and a lot of abs.

When I got home I signed up for a 'world building' workshop that author N.K. Jemisin is doing. I'm kind of excited. I loved the two books I've read by her: The City We Became and the sequel, The World We Make. They're classified as "urban fantasy."

Karyn and I got up another post on the blog - I can't believe I'll be finished with it next month, mid-month. I hope it's helpful to anyone who reads it who's caring for someone with Alzheimer's; it's certainly been helpful to me as I work through everything that happened with Peggy.

My background music for today has been Ashbury Heights, the ABBA of the goth world. I think of them as "pop goth." 🙂

Morning, GG, I don't think I would go see that plant either. I like.plants with nice fragrances, like.old fashioned.petunias and roses.

There is rain over in Arkansas moving west which is unusual.

    Back later.

I'll pass on that corpse plant Iris, they had one bloom at the Denver Botanical Gardens a few years ago. Enough to make a person quit gardening and who wants a plant that attracts flies. No thank you.

So, a big "No!" on seeing the corpse flower. I'm not interested in seeing or smelling the corpse flower. But I thought the gardeners on the Porch might be interested in learning about it, since it is the largest flower in the world. Actually it is an inflorescence, whatever that is. People are paying up to $29 to see and smell it in its glory.

Smog has returned to SoCal, I can't see the mountains at all. Perhaps the smog has something to do with our heat wave.

    Good morning.

Good afternoon. The wildfire smoke from Canada is just starting to be seen here. It's not supposed to be as extreme as 2013's fires, but the sky isn't blue at the moment. Tomorrow will be worse. Ugh.

Iris— The corpse flower might be the only plant that my local deer wouldn't consider salad. Not for nothing does one of my spray-on deterrents has cadaverine as an ingredient.

Lorita— I do enjoy the fragrance of an old fashion white petunia; they're hard to find in the nurseries which is a shame.

How's Max today? Could he have an abscess? I've had cats get them. They both seemed quite sick. One from fighting and the other from scratching himself.

Carl— I'm glad you enjoyed "David". There's a Sight and Sound near Lancaster; when they have a show the traffic is just beastly. The backroads are built for buggies not massive coach busses.

Ron— Do you need to commit to a single senior center or can you pick and choose based on activities and the menu?

HB— Good luck wrapping up the blog. I'm sure it'll be valuable for those who find themselves in your shoes.

The dental visit went pretty well. I got stuck with my least favorite hygienist (I purposely scheduled with someone else who quit in the last 6 months. Dentist expressed some concern that a bridge will need replacing at some point. Cosmetically, I'd need 2 veneers redone to make it work. I'm guessing this would be around $10K and would be unpleasant.

Mom called last night because she'd gotten a message about rescheduling an appointment. I asked her to read it to me, but she couldn't find it. She's awful at navigating on her phone between her vision and lack of tech savvy. I've changed her preferred phone number to mine with both Temple and Penn's health systems, but her retina, infectious disease and psychiatrist are out of those systems. There wasn't anything in the electronic chart, so I said I'd check it out today.

I called the ID doc's office because she has an appointment tomorrow. It wasn't them so I had to drive by. I went through her messages and her notifications (so many of her apps give notifications) and found zip. My less favored niece called, so I was able to get home at a reasonable hour.

Are any of you avoiding fresh produce because of the cyclospora outbreak? I've got to admit it makes me kind of nervous. I'd planned to get a salad for dinner tonight but probably won't. My bestie decided against adding basil to her Caprese plate.

    Be safe out there.

    Hello Porch Friends.

Im still out here, trying my best to keep up with all of you.

Im recovering from diverticulitis, I have been not too well for about a month. I have been on antibiotics for the last two weeks. I have lost 8 pounds and my appetite is finally coming back so I am now starting to eat soft foods. I go back to tne doctor On the 30th. I hope nothing flares up before then. Im usually pretty healthy, so this was a big deal for me.

Ron. I like your apartment, once you get it the way you want it, you will be feeling better about things, and getting alot more rest.

    Take care all, Hugs Zetta

HB, Max is better. I have checked him over and the only injury I can find is the tip of.his ear. Been putting Neosporin on it and it seems better. He is coming out from under the bed and laying on the bed. This morning I inadvertently left the door open and Sammy came in for a minute and Max disappeared under the bed for a while until I was able to coax him.out. Thanks for asking.

Zetta, I am so sorry about the diverticulitis. I have had it four times, at least. I only take Flagyl which works well for me. Those first three days after the attack are only liquids, then after the three days slowly adding soft food and you feel.like you're hungry all the time. It takes me a.good 3-4 weeks to feel.better. Hard way to lose weight. There are several foods I avoid including anything with seeds - tomatoes, squash, etc. I don't eat corn, popcorn, nuts of any kind and anything I'm. not sure about. I know Judith and things I read debunks the idea of not eating nuts or seeds but once you have diverticulitis you do not want to consume anything that might cause it. Feel better soon.My doctor told me to keep Flagyl at home all the time just in case.

Heard something on the news tonight.- the Military is going to start testing men.over 30 for low testosterone and if it is low, they will replace it. Why?

Forgot to watch soccer today but saw Argentina beat England. Maybe I can't remember to watch the final game, match or whatever they call it.

Climate change is getting out if control with so many wildfires bringing smoke to the NE and Midwest, floods in Texas and elsewhere, heat waves and drought. Even the animals are upset. Did you see the bison throw the grandpa up in the air He is lucky to.be alive. People are infringing on the animal' s territory and they are reacting.

Been cloudy and cooler here today. There is rain around but not here. Did.paperwork today so may turn in early. How did I do that for 33+ years. Youth has its advantages.

    Good.night, everyone.

Yes, I saw the bison and the grandpa! Ouch, he is way lucky to be alive! On my trip next week we will visit a park with bison but we will be in a Jeep and not get out. I emailed our tour leader specifically to ask about how close we get to the bison, I don't want any trouble with them!

Zetta, I'm glad you're recovering from the diverticulitis, and are back to eating soft foods.

Lorita, after you take Flagyl, do you eat yogurt to build up your gut bacteria?

Have any.of you all bought an angel.food cake mix lately? I just checked and they're $3.82 each and the baked angel food bar is $4.50. I bought a couple two or three months ago and I know they weren't that expensive. You could.buy a dozen eggs and make a cake for less than that.. The eggs I buy are brown, cage free under $3.00 and six eggs are .80 cents. Good news I s bananas are still 20 cents each.

Yes Iris, I eat lots of Yogurt, mostly Greek and.lots of cottage cheese. That bison was estimated to weigh a ton. Jasper , one of our bulls, weighed 2200 lbs. And would give you sugar.. Of course he wasn't a wild animal. I hope the heat wave breaks before your trip so you can enjoy it.

I was in Yellowstone once and was amazed at how many people treat the animals like a petting zoo and the thermal features like a theme park. One man was within six feet of a bison, despite signs telling us to stay at least 25 yards away. Another man was preparing to walk onto the thin crust on one of the boiling hot springs to retrieve a hat that had blown away, despite his wife arguing with him about it. I think he would have done it had I not asked him to wait until I got my camera ready. Rangers call such people "tourons" (tourist/moron).

The bison that tossed the man recently had apparently been harassed by a group of teenagers, became angry, and attacked the first human he saw. The rangers don't plan to do anything to the bison. I don't know if the teenagers will be prosecuted or not.

Glad you had fun, Ron. I enjoy those bus trips a lot.

Zetta, try applesauce. Gives you something sweet, good for you and is just good.. Also mashes potatoes. I love instant.potatoes- 2 cups of.boiling water, add the packet of instant Potatoes and I usually add a.big spoonful of butter. Also yogurt. I keep those things just in case. For some.odd reason I.have had diverticulitis in August a couple of times. Fingers crossed that I.don't this August.

Carl, they shouldn't do anything to the.bison. That is his home - people are the trespassers. I.hate it when there is interaction netween.people and an animal and they hunt down and kill the animal for defending itself and its home.

Good morning. We have a dirty sky this morning and a projected high of 93. Mom's got 2 different appointments— a blood draw for the endo and a visit with infectious disease. Yuck.

Lady Z— I am sorry to hear you were suffering with a bout of diverticulitis. That's very unpleasant. My MIL had it from time-to-time.

Lorita— I'm glad Max is on the mend. I imagine testing for low T makes sense if there are symptoms which can be unpleasant. Otherwise, it seems $$$. DS's old scoutmaster (and friend of mine) developed low T. In the years before he was diagnosed, his personality morphed into the very worst stereotype usually associated with women. It was so much so that another friend and I used to joke about his moodiness. (guilty) Treatment was very helpful for him. And his marriage.

That does seem high for a simple cake mix. It's $5.29 at the cheaper of two local stores. A prepared plain angel food cake from their bakery is $6. I only ever make them from scratch when I am also making a custard.

Carl— What is it about people that they leave whatever brains they have at home when they go on vacation?

Catching up on laundry before picking mom up. She seems perkier of late. Her baseline is lower than a year ago but much improved from a month ago. I'm feeling less stressed about having to reschedule the pulmonary hypertension specialist.

Mom told me my younger niece, the troubled one who has allegedly been getting her act together, was arrested a month ago for driving w/o a license or insurance. This is not a first or worst for her. What was she thinking?

My godchild's dad and stepmom are home from the hospital and there's been some drama between the stepsisters who prioritizing their own parent. This leaves GC at a disadvantage as SS knows GC's dad's medical info but isn't sharing her mom's. SM was hospitalized for "change in mental status"; her discharge mentions "acute encephalopathy", dehydration and malnutrition. This woman, who is generally a lovely lady aside from her role as "side piece" is exhibiting many of the same symptoms as the ones associated with dad's WKS— conflated memories, paranoia, apathy, lack of empathy, short term memory issues, etc. I know she drinks and that it is above the single daily glass of wine limit but man, do I hope my spidey sense is wrong.

As Time Goes By - the tv show or movie?

Rats, again. We just went to the mailbox.Stormy sits in the back seat. When we got home and he got out I saw some paper in the floorboard.I keep a box of Kleenex and a couple of masks in the car and had noticed the masks were gone. Got the papers and masks out, then felt under the seat and there was more paper, cedar twigs and seeds, then a rat's nest!! I wss afraid to feel under there more. So much for the cedar helping. If Bryon comes this weekend I'll ask him to see what else is under the seat.

@Iris L. I try to bundle appointments with mom where possible. She's ~20 minutes away under good conditions (not good today— I drove through 2 paving projects and some utility work with lane closures in the 7 1/2 miles) so it makes sense for me. I tacked on a trip for bloodwork since I was doing infectious disease anyway— I've made 4 trips to her place this week, doubling up kept it from being 5 and its only Thursday.

Judith— If your iPad is cellular, it would have its own number and line-item charge on your cellular provider's bill. My phone and watch are cellular, but my iPad isn't. It's said that 10-25% of iPads was wi-fi only.

Lorita— I am so sorry to hear of more rodent troubles.

Iris - I remember when the smog would roll in we wouldn't be able to see the San Gabriel mountains at all. Of course, that was back in the days of "smog alerts" when we weren't allowed to do PE outside.

HB - We haven't really had a problem with the cyclospora outbreak in WA state (yet). Still, we've been washing our produce extra carefully. As suggested, we pull off the outer leaves of heads of lettuce. So far, knock on wood, we've been okay. I saw this somewhat helpful article on the LA Times the other day.

I've seen photos of the skies on the east coast. Ugh. We haven't seen any of that (yet), but when there are forest fires in British Columbia, the smoke floats down to us, and our skies then look like your skies. I mask all the time at that point, except at home where I have air purifiers going.

Hi there Zetta - I'm sorry you had that and am glad you're starting to feel better. 8 pounds is a lot of weight to lose …..

Carl - "tourons" is a great term, I'm going to start using it. You're right, of course, Yellowstone is not a petting zoo. Stay away from the animals.

Did you guys see the story about some people having to retake their written driver's tests at the Dept of Motor Vehicles in L.A.? Somehow DMV decided there might have been cheating going on (not sure how they came to this decision) , so 11,000 had to retake the written - some almost a year after they had taken the test. I would have been SO angry if that had happened to me.

Today it monsooned outside! We were expecting a little bit of rain, but we got a deluge for about 45 min. I was at the gym at the time, and they had all of the doors (kind of like garage doors) open, so I could see how hard the rain was coming down. Starting next week it's supposed to be in the high 80s so I'm going to make ice cream sandwiches over the weekend.

I now have fish friends. We live on a 3 acre neighborhood pond. There are 9 or 10 houses on the pond. I have been throwing the Japanese beetles I catch into the water for the fish. Now, when they see me or my husband near the shoreline, they come over. I counted 50 this afternoon. They are small bluegills.

    Sleep well. Beth

Morning, are you settling in and getting used to the routine there, Ron? I hope you'll really like living there. St the very least there will always be someone around.

It's in the mid 80 s but already feels like 96 and sort of cloudy. Supposed to be really.hot this weekend.

My driveway alarm quit working so ordered another but I think I.probably just needed to replace the batteries. I believe I have found a tiny screwdriver to get the screws out. I had a whole set but they have disappeared. Ordered a new set but not here yet. I have a screwdriver with all shapes and sizes of the working end so may have one that fits. When a car comes up the drive it can't be seen until it's almost where I have the transmitter at the first gate going down the drive. Yesterday I.happened to look out the kitchen window and FedEx was out there did.not hear a sound.

Finally have the smell of Grandpa Gus out of the csr.but maybe I should spray it under the car seat. I need barn cats like we used to have but no idea where to get them. When we had so many people used to come here to get them.but they disappeared one by one, probably gotten by coyotes.

You all, have a good day. Time for The Waltons!
