Iris, when do you go and for how long? I.hope the weather is nice and not too hot.

Judith, when I took down the trash a baby rabbit was in the driveway in front of me. He couldn't decide which way to go so I stopped until he made up his mind. I think I have mentioned that daddy would sometimes bring a baby rabbit home to me. He would be plowing or cultivating and find a rabbit's nest. He brought.home three baby skunks one time. They never threw their scent- maybe too young but if they got upset they would stomp their front feet. So cute.

In bed watching tv. Groceries will be delivered about 7 in the morning and I need to water four big containers of caladiums before it gets hot and fill the water tank for the girls.

    Good night. Sleep well.

GG, that mid-70s weather sounds wonderful. We had low 90s today and expect high 90s tomorrow, and it's so humid that the streetlights have halos. Even at 10 pm it's not pleasant to be outside. Normal July weather in SW MO ☹️

The park dept. managed to repair the bus enough to take Ron and others to the casino last week, but now the A/C and the wheelchair lift are broken and the July Branson trip is cancelled. That is really disappointing to some who don't drive and never get out of the city except on the bus tours.

Carl, I hope the bus gets repaired quickly so the seniors can go visit Branson and the casino.

GG, I can't stand on one leg and put my shoe on, I always have to sit down. That Bosu ball looks like a good balance exercise.

Lorita, I will leave early Tuesday morning, around 3 am to LAX to Denver, then to Rapid City SD. I will return next Sunday. I haven't begun to pack, but I have tomorrow.

    Good morning,

Why don’t they just stick a fork in me and call me done. I spent 12 hours at the ER yesterday with breathing problems. Because of prior blood clots they did more than really needed; breathing treatment, Chest X-ray, bloodwork, ultrasound and CT with contrast. No blood clots and coughing with the wheezing is better but still there. Im home and about to take a nap!

Lorita. Sorry your still having problems with the mice making, nest in your car. Are they doing it under the car are in the car? Yes im feeling better, I go in for another check up and my wellness check. The 1st of the week, I go in for blood work then to the doctor on Friday.

GG. Thank you, yes Fiona is a beautiful dog. She has a lot of anxiety and takes daily meds to help her be calm. Molly and Fiona love going to Starbucks with us, they always get pup cups, filled with whip cream. Spoiled Dogs. Pup cups are free at Starbucks, and a lot of other coffee drive through.

The sun here is probably like the sun there, it seems to be a calmer sun. Right now we have smoke blocking the sun, due to a few fires in Idaho.

Ron. Sorry about your visit to ER. It's good having all those test done, you never know, especially at our age what they will find. With the moving and getting resettled your probably in need of a lot of rest.

Iris. Yes Fiona Is a white German shepherd also referad to as a Swiss Shepard and they are their own breed.

Sad news for The Big Bear Valley Bald Eagles, Jackie and Shadow. It appears that something happened to Jackie, she was found on the ground unable to fly. She was taken to the rehab facility, with all the checking of pictures of her, and with her not tending to the 2 young ones in the next, it was confirmed to be her. 🙁 update posted 12 minutes ago, said Jackie is stable and very strong and she will get through this. Shadow is being a real good daddy he is taking care of the nest. For updates just go to The Friends of Big Bear Valley. She is at The Ojai Raptor Center for a full medical assessment 🦅🙏

What is a bosu? Somehow I missed that discussion. When I stand to put on my shoes it's hard to balance on my left foot, right is better. Is there a way to improve that?

Ron, sorry you had to go through all those tests so hope you can just relax this afternoon.

Groceries were delivered just after seven. Got them al!.put away, watered all the caladiums and filled the water tank. Wore me out but still better than driving into town, selecting what I need and getting it home.

It's 95 with heat index of 111 already. May reach 100 today. If not we will tomorrow. There is a slight breeze. Our last 100 degree day is usually Aug. 22 first.one.July 10. I can remember when I had my Mustang and would get in it after work the leather seats burned my back+ Didn't have AC in it.

Zetta, the one I found was under the back seat.. Bryon found.one in the back when he lifted the flap. Big old nests, really soft made out of Kleenex mostly.

I thought it was one of the babies that fell out of the nest. Are both of them okay? I really.hope.Jackie gets well-did they say what was wrong? Watching David Muir and he is going to report on Jackie.

Still 88 with heat index of 100. It just doesn't cool.down much at night. To.be even higher tomorrow. Our weatherman runs cattle and he says he is worried about them. Most cattle in our Ares are Black Angus so they really soak up the heat.. I'm so.glad ours can get in the barn out of the sun. You see cattle in pastures with two trees and they are gathered around the shade that isn't big enough. Ours came out of the barn about 4:30 and headed to the pond to stand in the water.

You all try to stay inside during this.hot weather. I feel o sorry.for everyone who.has to work outside. This is hay baling season and luckily most tractors have cabs and are air conditioned. Ours didn't so we did our work.very early.

Ron, I.hope you feel much better tomorrow. Darwin isn't feeling well so.his daughter is taking him to.our doctor tomorrow.

    Good.night, everyone.

Carl - we're supposed to get to 90 degrees tomorrow, plus we have some high smoke in the air from the fires. Still, it'll be nice. The air quality is still pretty good.

Lorita and Iris - At this link you can see what a bosu is, and how to use it. There are 11 different exercises you can try. It's an unstable surface so it makes all of the exercises more difficult - but it's so worth it. If you decide to try some of these, you can (and probably should), hold onto a nearby wall for balance until you get the hang of it. I've done all of these exercises, even the burpees (which I hate). They are doable, with practice.

Lorita - I think the only way to improve balance is to practice (safely).

Iris - have a wonderful trip!!!

Ron - Ugh. I'm so sorry, but you're home now, right? I hope you start feeling better soon.

Zetta - It's so nice that Starbucks and other places like that give dogs treats. I like knowing that they do that.

Gym was good this morning, and then I ran a few errands. Mostly a quiet day.

Take care, everyone, with the heat.

GG you live such an interesting library of experiences, thoughts, and curiosities. 🤗

When I lived in WA state I really battled with depression, especially in the winter and you are so very correct the sunlight is somehow just different there. It was back in the day when we would have those silver discs that looked like part of a spaceship and would sit in front of a "sun" lamp hoping we didn't get burned. I always think of the sunlight in WA as a softer light not so hard on my skin, eyeballs, and the truck's seat cushions. But I have really noticed the difference in my overall disposition the longer I have lived in Colorado and now only look forward to my visits to Washington. Such a beautiful state.

I love it when you bring up Dark Shadows. Such fond memories of watching it after school on Thursdays. Barnabas definitely a coded character. LOL

I spent the entire day packing! Packing the clothing wasn't difficult, it was gathering up all the little things that I think I might need. I had to run to three stores to look for ear buds because I can't find the expensive ones I bought just two months ago. I also couldn't find my travel electric toothbrush, so I had to pack my everyday electric toothbrush. But finally everything is done and I made all my calls. I have to get up at 3 to leave by 4 for a 5 am pickup. I'll post pictures when I can.

Morning, it's already 80 and feels like 92. That's what so bad in that it never really cools off.

Ron, glad you feel.better and slept well. Take care today.

If I go out anywhere in the car I always take water with me. I have turned into my mother- she always did that.

Iris, have a.safe trip. Are you flying or going on a bus?

Goodlife, Colorado is a pretty State. We went to Colorado Springs in late July many years ago -spent the night in Pueblo and had to use a blanket at night.

GG, I think a lot of my balance problem is the Morton's Neuroma. I just have to.be careful. Back later..

    Good morning Porch Friends!

We had quite a storm last night. The phone kept going off with severe thunderstorm warning, lightning in the area, heavy rain in our location etc. The wind was frightening - I heard 70 mph. My composter and my pot with a tomato in it blew over. Lots of debris washed up onto our shoreline too. Others have reported tree damage. We only have small trees so no damage there. Many plants are leaning over this morning due to the wet soil but mainly the wind.

I had an intense gym day yesterday; 30" cardio, deadlifts 75 lbs x 25, back squats 65 lbs x 15, TRX lunge 100 lbs x 24 and many more exercises. It felt good. Today: cardio only and I'll do that here at home.

Lorita, one balance exercise is to stand on one leg while you brush your teeth.

GoodLife, we love Colorado. Our happy place is Estes Park; I would love to live there! Not going to happen; we choose to live near family - our kids are in TX and in IA. Have you been to Rocky Mountain National Park?

GG, hope your air quality stays in a safe range. Ours yesterday was "unhealthy for sensitive groups" but is good today. The winds and rain must have cleared it a bit although the sky is a bit hazy.

We have Bosus at the gym but I've never used them.

Iris, I hope you have a wonderful trip! I saw a funny video online with the four presidents on Mt. Rushmore singing. I'd love to go to Mt. Rushmore again someday.

Glad you feel better today, Ron. I wonder if the air quality is contributing to breathing issues for you.

Zetta, do Jackie and her mate have babies or are there still just eggs? Do the male eagles care for the young when the female cannot? I heard that Jackie was found on the ground unable to fly and they thought she'd been in a fight with other eagles.

HB, I know all about the deer and rabbits eating plants. I have had trouble with that but if I keep the young plants sprayed with Liquid Fence or the like, it keeps them away. Last year I planted a few little blueberry bushes. Over the winter, the rabbits ate them almost to the ground. I will definitely protect them this winter.

Eagle, hope there is soon an end to the hot tub woes.

Judith, are you enjoying your coffee station? Do you make fancy coffees such as espresso drinks? We drink plain coffee with 1/2 and 1/2 here at home but I do enjoy going to Starbucks too. I too go down the rabbit hole, especially on YouTube. You watch a video and another pops up that you might like, on and on…

Carl, stay cool. Hope the storms are not headed your way.

Good morning. It's gray here at the moment. T-storms and rain forecasted for dinner time.

Eaglemom— That sort of weather is just so draining. Physically, of course. But also, mentally as you have to plan out your day to stay safe.

I'm so glad you got the response you did from your complaint. It's difficult to enjoy a big-ticket item when you come away feeling you've screwed over.

Lady Z— I hope the dogs enjoyed their pup cups as much as you did your drink. DS occasionally sends me reels of cats in the drive-thru losing their minds over the prospective of a pup cup. Somehow, cats behaving like dogs is even funnier than dogs acting like dogs. Do you normally order the same thing, or do you mix it up based on your mood?

Mom'll be 89 next February. TBH, her independence is sometimes more of an illusion than reality. So long as I can be enough oversight to keep her safe, we'll continue the arrangement. I have a couple places in mind if she needs more. There's a very nice CCRC 2 miles away that was started as a bequest and is run by the town's Community Welfare Council which is unusual.

Judith— I believe the Mayo's recommendations are based on folks who aren't deficient to start and have no risk factors. My endo prescribes the amount I take because of my long-term (since 1972) use of levothyroxine. I've gotten regular DEXA scans since my early 40s.

Lorita— I'm glad the girls have barn access in this hot weather. Our local dairy only has his girls out if the weather is decent. DH and I drove up to my favorite brewery for an after-dinner IPA; they have a porch with a view that's lovely and the weather was perfect last night. I thought of you because on the way home, the Holsteins were out enjoying the evening as well.

I read a recipe for a rat deterrent in a British newspaper the other day (while rabbit holing). It included several tablespoons of red pepper flakes brewed into a tea with a 1/2 teaspoon of dishwashing liquid. You're supposed to pour it into a spray bottle and spray the area. They say the scent is offensive to their noses. Perhaps spraying around the car would put them off. I've found the peppermint drops on cotton balls in the kitchen helpful with mice.

Iris— Bon Voyage! As always, I'm sure I'm not the only one looking forward to a photo dump.

Gothic G— It's interesting you mention the characteristics of sun being different. My childhood summers were spent on Cape Ann in MA. The light has a very different feel, and I can appreciate the pull it had on many American painters. I live very near where The New Hope School (Pennsylvania Impressionist Movement) painted— the skies are just different.

Barnabas was camp. I mean, those outfits, the hair, that ring.

Goodlife— I recall Dark Shadows being afterschool fare for my friends and I too. General Hospital at times. It's funny, I was super busy through high school and college and then didn't have a TV once I was on my own until I moved in with DH— so about 14 years of very little TV. One day when I was working a night shift, I turned on General Hospital and was immediately able to follow it. So little had happened in all that time aside from a new intro and some updated sets.

Carl— I hope they're able to fix the bus soon. I'm sure those trips are a bright spot in the week for many.

Ron— I'm glad the folks at the ER were thorough and didn't discharge you before making sure it's safe to do so.
    _______________________________________________________

The plumber took out another section of ceiling (oh yay!) and determined the tiny leak to likely be DS flooding the floor when he's drying off. Grrr. DH and I can both shower, not water. I can even have a bath and no water. But DS is a hot mess.

The saga of godchild's dad and stepmom continues. Dad's home and his cognition is improving with the treatment of his liver issues. DSM was home for a bit, melted down and was turfed to a geripsych just over an hour away. He DH is unhappy with the distance and visiting limitations. Worse for him because of the lactulose he's supposed to take 3x daily.

I think I'll make a Costco run. I went Sunday evening with DH about 20 minutes before closing. It was like an episode of Supermarket Sweep grabbing all the heavy things I'm not supposed to life. He was struggling a bit with the lifting. TBH, he's no better than I am with tendonitis. I keep forgetting he's 80 in March. I should probably transfer DH's card to DS instead. DH has never set foot in Costco without me. Today I need PB, Lactaid milk, cheese sticks and frozen cauliflower crust pizzas. Our local store is supposed to be getting wine and beer which should be interesting.

I hope all have a safe and pleasant day.

Iris….again, please, where are we of to

Lorita…who suggested the cedar branches as rat protection. Do you drive your car every day?

The conversation about light is so interesting. I have only heard about the light in Madrid.

It's hot here, with an expected heat index of 105 today 😡 We expect cooler weather tomorrow and some rain Friday and Saturday, so I'm basically doing indoor chores today and postponing my outdoor adventures.

I didn't have time to watch TV in the years Dark Shadows was on. I entered my mother's home one day and found her watching it, with some character chewing the scenery, and she agreed that they "overacted" on that show but she liked it.

Iris, if you spend any time in Denver, the natural history museum is interesting. They have lots of mineral samples (Colorado is a mining state) and fossils of mammoths and mastodons. The mammoths had teeth as large as cooking pots! One of the elephant fossils was excavated with a spear point lodged in its shoulder, which suggests Neanderthals weren't the only humans who ate 🐘 10,000 years ago.

    Ron, glad you're feeling better.

Beth, glad you had no serious damage from the windstorm.

It's 97 with heat Index of 117, per Alexa. One thermometer on the porch says 102- not in direct sun on back of column. Just seeing weather and should be up to 110 all over the State. I need to fill water tank- should have earlier.

I think I read about cedar being a deterrent. Judith. I don't drive the car every day. Bryon is also having problems with rodents, probably a lot of others.

Iris, I hope it's cooler in SD than it was last week. Have a wonderful time.

Zetta, I have worked on the driveway alarm this afternoon. Last night I wondered if the pointed end of a nail file would loosen the tiny screws - it worked!!! It has been too hot to go.put the transmitter on the big gate post. Will do that in the morning. I have not been able to find the alarm sound on the receiver that stormy is used to. Hope he can adjust. One sound- there are 35- is a dog barking.

In Tulsa it is 192, heat index is 117. People are out in meadows cutting and baling hay. Talked to Darwin's daughter and her husband is cutting today and is still hot in his air conditioned tractor. Will be in mid 90s tomorrow, then hot again. I remember it was this hot in 1984.

Lorita. The update on Jackie is, yes she did get into a fight, but she was attacked by two other eagles, only one got the best of her. She was found hoping out of the water unable to fly. The update a few hours ago says she has no signs of anything broken. She has lost alot of weight. She is not too happy right now, she is fighting with her caregivers. She is eating and sitting on a branch in her cage. There is a video of her being attacked, very hard to watch. I tried not to watch it. But it keeps coming up when I check on her. Im afraid she is getting too old and will never be strong enough to defend herself.

Iris. Enjoy your trip to Mount Rushmore, I'm looking forward to your photos. Be safe.

Beth. Im glad you survived the storm with not too much damage. A wind of 70 mph sounds bad. Hopefully your storms are done. Yes Jackie and Shadow, still have young ones in the nest. Sandy and Luna are about 16 weeks old. They have ventured out on their own a few times, but still hanging around the nest for the big fish, that Jackie and Shadow bring to them. Shadow is now bring the fish and protecting the nest. It sounds like the other eagles are still in the area.

HB. I bet its funny watching cats getting pup cups. I would love to see that. I can't even imagine us taking our cats to Starbucks. Our dogs know right where we are at as soon as we pull into the drive up lane. My DD always orders something different and fancy. Me im not that adventurous, I get the Carmel Latte, holiday season I get the Pumpkin Spice latte. The last few times I have gotten Chai Tea, and I'm really liking that. Sorry to hear about your leaking ceiling, hopefully is can be fixed soon, before it gets worse.

Ron, I'm glad you're feeling better.

Zetta, my friend has a white Husky, not a white German Shepherd. She has blue eyes.

We arrived at Rapid City! I don't know exactly how many are in our group but I'd say about 40. There was no food nor entertainment on the plane, only a cookie. But the flights were good and uneventful.

Carl, no time in Denver, only 2 hours in the airport. The Denver Airport seems to have more shops and better eating places than at LAX.

The weather is mild, but the sky is dull, looking like smog but I think it is smoky from the fires on Wasington and/or Canada. I can smell smoke in the air.

We are heading out for a welcome dinner, then to the evening lighting ceremony at Mt Rushmore.

Beth, here is a funny mural at the airport.
