Moderate Urinary Incontinence Management

Hello friends,

Dad (79) is in an assisted living, not full nursing home. He really likes it there and our goal is he can stay there as long as possible. Urinary incontinence is happening more, but he can still get to the bathroom or be reminded to go and it's ok. The facility doesn't have a person who would help with that. (Only $4k/mo, classified as care home, etc). He'll be eligible for Medicaid Sept 2027. I have someone coming in 3 days a week now, but if he can't learn how to change the diapers I'd need to get someone in every day or even twice a day, maybe? I'm using Visiting Angels at $110/day bc the local home care places won't take him since he's not on Medicaid.

Has anyone's LO been able to learn/ remember how to change out the Depends? Right now he's in a transitional phase, having episodes several times a week, so I can't just hire someone to come every morning at 7 or whatever. He is coming around to the depends, but he also thinks if he wears them 24/7 he will train his body/brain to just… go in them. I get that's not how it works, but the other night he had overflow from peeing several times. Normally, he gets up and does not have accidents in the bed. So he is kinda right, at this point.

I know once fecal starts then he has to move. Until then, how often does someone need to change the diapers, etc? Do those insert pads work?

So is he just wearing the Depends part of the time? If so, it may be time to just remove the regular underwear and put the 'adult underwear' in its place.

Sorry, not sure how you could get him to change more often... MIL never did nor will understand that.

yeah, part time but going to full time now. I'm not sure he can change them himself, but I have the 2 day a week caregiver working with him on it. Thank you.
