Highly Recommend Citicoline Supplement
Hi, All, My partner was diagnosed with MCI on 21018 and the diagnosis has moved now to Alzheimer's since it would not be safe for him to live by himself for an extended period of time. About a two years ago, he revisited a naturopath who recommended Citicoline to support focus and battle brain fog. We researched it ourselves and found a number of valid studies for dementia patients and no contraindication with his other meds.
So we gave it a shot after discussing with his neurologist who was not very hopeful but thought it wouldn't hurt. Well, I have to say it is a total winner! No lasting effects, but we know it is working because when he doesn't take it, it is very noticeable. So much so that I always make sure we have enough on hand and never run out. He takes it in the morning and also at 4 pm. Wanted to share since neurologists are not always interested in looking outside conventional medicine for solutions. Note: Choline is not the same as Citicoline.
Anybody tried anything else like this with positive results? Would love to hear about it.

I am a supplement skeptic. But a friend recommended a multivitamin, he felt it helped his memory. So I started taking it. We're both late 70's and I think it does help a little. I know it has helped me recover somewhat from radiation damage after a cancer treatment. The memory, I think so too but that's much harder to judge and there's always the placebo effect to consider. In any event the pills you recommend I shall try, thank you. It's a very inexpensive experiment.

allendswell, I hadn’t heard of it before, but it sounds interesting. How many mg does he take per dose? What types of positive effects are you noticing?

I might try that, but I'll check with DWs doctor first. She takes a lot of medicine and some supplements interact adversely with prescription meds.
Thanks for the info, allendswell.

Someone asked me about dosage so thought I'd share with all. Started with 750 mg in morning. Had an immediate effect. That was almost 3 years ago. Then went to 1000 mg in am, and 500 at about 5. Just moved to 1250 in am. Dosage can be up to 2000 daily. Results of taking it at night is not so noticeable due to increased confusion starting around 4 pm each day. He sometimes take a couple mid day if a big social thing.
I myself take 250 a day since I'm 63 - helps with focus.

allendswell, thank you. I have been reading a lot of positive things about it since you posted. I checked Amazon and Walmart. There are lots of different brands in a wide range of prices and reviews. Would you care to share the brand or brands that you use? You can PM me if you don’t want to post it here.

we buy Healthy Origins Citicoline, naturopath recommended. 250 mg capsules. I get it on Amazon. I hope it helps! My partner ran out about 7 months ago and so was without it in the morning. when he finally found some in a local store he got in the car and took some and said he could feel it kicking in - more clarity, focus, less brain fog. so very noticeable shift! which is why we no longer EVER run out:).

allendswll, in early November when you began this thread I bought a bottle of Citocoline, a low dose, 3 capsules adding up to 500mg. My DH has been taking one or two capsules every couple of days. I’m afraid to hope that some positive changes are due to this supplement, especially at such a low dose. My DH is stage 6/7 and mostly whispers rather than speaking out loud, and then very few words. But in the past several weeks he is using many more words although still mostly whispering. Yesterday morning when I asked him if we should take a shower now he said, “I prefer to wait a while.” Certainly not a profound response for most people, but for him that’s a lot more than the typical one word response or blank look I usually get from him. When I asked him after dinner if he wanted pumpkin pie for dessert, he whispered, no, and then “Maybe a little later.” More words than the typical one word response. This has been going on for the past couple weeks. More words and more interaction.
He had been having a lot of difficulty walking and would only attempt a few steps from sofa to table, or over to the door and back, holding onto furniture on the way. He has been walking out into the entryway and back around, not holding onto furniture, about 55 steps, something unheard of 3 or 4 weeks ago. I follow him, sometimes holding his hand because I still consider him a falling risk and there are step downs and step ups between the rooms, but he has started doing this many times per day and sometime walking quite quickly, other times slow shuffling steps. He hasn’t touched his walker in a couple of months. When we had a guest a few days ago he stood up to shake her hand and stood up on his own and walked with us to the door when she was leaving. It has been close to a year since he’s done that without a lot of encouragement.I’m almost afraid to think it’s the Citicoline that’s helping, especially at such a low dose, but I can’t help being a little hopeful. It’s the one thing that I can think of that’s changed.

Citicoline is VERY well researched with very positive research. It is often combined with an RX, Memantine. Together they are also very successful, but the Citicoline is considered to be the best of the two, and is OTC.
My DH has been taking Citicoline since Spring 2023. I also take it since it isn't harmful and I figured why NOT? My DH was recently prescribed Memantine by his neurologist. His MOCA score was 21 in December, down from 24 the year before. So he still has MCI, but he continues to decline.
The hardest part for me is when he is telling people a piece of our history, and he is getting it all wrong! I have to bite my tongue to keep from correcting him. I know most people don't care or won't remember what he says, but it breaks my heart that he is losing so much. He doesn't remember any of the trips we took since 2010: Ireland, Italy and Germany. I am grieving that I'm losing the only person who has known me for 64 of my 82 years. All of my family of origin has been gone for decades.

DH tried 2000mg daily in two doses for three months the. Unfortunately, no positive discernible effect.

Elaine, you mentioned that Citicoline has had positive research but you also mentioned that your DH is recently also taking Memantine. It wasn’t clear to me from your post if the Citicoline was having an effect on its own or not. You also mentioned that you were taking it as well. Have you noticed any difference?
