Morning, cold here, the wind chill was 5 this morning but it's sunny. Went out at 7:30 to run some water in the lot tank but almost everyone was out of the barn and hydrant and hose didn't cooperate. Cut or broke ice in the other one. I left the LR stove on last night so the house was warm enough. I got my.gloves damp and they stuck to anything metal. Will have to wear different ones or keep them drier.

Does anyone use Apoquel for dog allergies? I have to figure out something other than the shots - just too much trouble getting to the vet or doing it here. I have to figure out how to get Sheena in the car. Stormy has an anxiety seizure because of all the animals and people in the clinic . Back later

    Good afternoon-

My corner of the porch has gotten about 1" of snow since daybreak. It's supposed to stop within the hour which is OK by me. I don't think it'll be worthy of the 2-stage snowblower— perhaps a quick scrape with a shovel will do.

I need to check in with my mom. She was concerned about food shopping. Watching the weather channel, she came away with the impression this was going to be the start of 11 days of snow. I asked her if she needed anything immediately and she said no. I know she has cat food, litter, distilled water (for bi-pap), milk, wine, fruit and a freezer full of breads, homecooked low-salt meals and soups. The catastrophizing concerns me on top of the word-finding issues and forgetfulness. She's OK for now, but it didn't help that I found her iPhone in the pantry last week.

I heard from mom's older sister last night. She'd been planning a visit for mom's February birthday. Another family member recently died from COPD/pneumonia, and I think it triggered this "need" to travel to see her sister. It's not a great time of year for an 89-year-old woman to be traveling by rail alone. The last time she took the train down she picked the Quiet Car and almost missed her station. I successfully delayed the trip until Easter. She wants to travel back to Boston the day after which is Patriots' Day and could be a hassle for her driver on that end as well.

Like Carl our generator was bought for medical reasons. It is a Generac (did not know there was any other kind) and it is services once a year. It is hooked up to the gas line. I would never be without one again.

Baby goats…maybe you can bring them inside…lol

Iris…the tornado number was for the whole state.

Need a new coffeemaker. All advice welcome.

Yes, but I didn't believe it. I didn't believe a crew of men had dug an 8-foot hole for a nickel either. The pig story was more credible, considering the pig farmer's careless approach to personal hygiene. For one thing, when he spit tobacco juice, he spit it on the dashboard of his truck and let it drip rather than turn his head to spit out the window.

Temp made it to 28 today but going way down tonight. Just finished cutting ice. It was about 2" thick. Carl, took it out of the water with my.gloved hands and it hurt. Filled both tanks about half full. Girls are enjoying hay but will be down later. I watched a big, black cow checking out the edge of the pond for a place to drink. I hope they cut ice when they fed. If I keep the tanks clear they'll come to them to drink but it's so far now. Hate for the babies to have to walk so far in the cold.

Jerilynn, how are the babies today? Is it two or one mom?

Judith, I no longer drink coffee but have seen single cup coffee makers on QVC. Also bigger ones.

Looks like snow may get us later this week depending on the track of a Low. Eagle, you may get some of it. I hope it misses us. I didn't watch much of the Chiefs game either. Did watch a little of the Ravens game though. Jackson is a good QB. Thought he might be related to Samuel L. Jackson but guess not. They do favor each other.

Stay warm tonight wherever you are.

I know it is best to write in bold letters but I'm using my cellphone and I can't figure out how to do that. Next time I'm out I'll stop by the AT&T store and get directions.

I'm following your weather stories with great interest. I'm in Seattle where snow and ice are very infrequent. Most of us park our cars and walk when roads are icy. It's not just because of our hills but since it doesn't snow much the city hasn't invested in snow removal equipment. I pray you all are safe.

My DH had a rare good night's sleep, which means i did as well. It's amazing how much gets done when I'm well rested.

Lorita, your pig story reminded me of a dog we had. I once took him blueberry picking and for every one I put in my bucket, one went to him. I soon tired of this so I took him to his own bush and taught him to pick his own. We both had a great time :)

Our Seahawks had a disappointing season so we have adopted the Chiefs as our team. Seattle had all of their best players on the field yesterday and managed to win against the Rams. Didn't matter though. Rams are still in the playoffs and we're not.

It's a quiet day here. I'm looking forward to many more. Thanks for the conversation.

    good evening,

COLD!!! Good bit of rain last night, spitting snow off/on today with nothing sticking. The wind is bitter.

Lorita, just call me the Goat Whisperer!, lol. It was indeed one Mama, three babies. The other pregnant nanny flew the coop being in there with Goldie and her babies! She climbed on just enough hay and plywood and jumped over the TOP of the stable to get to the hallway of the barn and out to the pasture. It's amazing. The babies are doing well. Up, toddling and nursing. All girls. That's a good thing. The littlest one is so tiny but she is scrappy! I'm going to call her Sassy. The darker brown one will be Ginger and I haven't decided on the other one yet. She has not revealed her nature. Except, when born she was cuddled down in the shavings, sleeping away. So maybe Constance. I'll have to see.

We've been lazy today. To Tullahoma to get DH his allergy shot, stopped by the store for dog food and more shavings, to the barn, the chicken coop and then inside the rest of the day. I took a nap. DH has informed me it is time to build a new hen house. I'm happy about that. We both want one that you can walk into. Easier to clean. Bigger. Easier to cover with chicken wire to protect from the hawks. Maybe even a small porch with itty bitty chicken swings. And planters for herbs. A springtime project for sure.

Well, one of the grands is headed here in a bit so I will close for today. Stay warm, dry and safe.

This means in the spring our porch will not only have our rocking chairs but also itty bitty chicken swings!! I love that mental picture.

And on that note, good night.

Soaring with the eagles, hooting with the owls, and swinging with the chickens. Life is good! I knew some swinging chicks before I was married, but we'll leave those stories for another time.

Our rain and sleet pretty much froze dry by noon, leaving dry roads and just snow showers off and on, so we went to the drug store for our prescriptions and ate at the diner. The waitress, a trucker's wife, said her husband is stuck in KC. I-70 was closed and no freight was moving with the foot or more of snow they had.

Lorita, reading about you putting your hands in that icy water makes my arthritic knuckles hurt. I'd do it barehanded rather than go around in wet gloves, at least I'd have dry gloves to put on afterward. A pair of oversized rubber kitchen gloves with a pair of cloth gloves inside might be better. Or a pitchfork or garden fork. You'll have a hard time typing your great posts if you frostbite your fingers!

    Good morning

HB understand your concern for your mom. We are always watching and looking for what’s happening. I still do that even though she’s in a AL. That’s why I’m so thankful for AL because there are many eyes are there to help me.

Jehjeh Always nice to get a good nights sleep. Since we are used to winter storms here, we are well prepared to deal with them in a lot of ways. The main issue is the loss of electricity. We probably got between three and 4 inches of snow right now. I was able to keep it pushed off. I did not have to use my two stage snowblower either.

if you Google the blizzard of 1978, I lived through that. You will probably see the story of the semi driver who got buried by snow for several days and survived. I worked 3 to 1130 then and that’s when it started. We were not able to leave work that night and ended up working several days. It was three or four days I forget which. As you know, evening shift is not got a big staff. A lot of us were pretty young. The school of nursing at that time was attached to the hospital, so some of the floors were being ran by student nurses. The physicians could not get in and at that time we did not have hospitalists. The physicians were able to call in though, so we were able to receive orders. Good Lord took care of us. I don’t remember us having any codes and everything went pretty well. It was an interesting time. It was even interesting for quite a little while afterwards felt like you lived in a tunnel of snow. Can’t remember, but I’m wondering if the only physicians available were the emergency room physicians. That’s probably how it was which was probably OK because no one was coming to ER they couldn’t get there.

JeriLynn You will have to send pictures of your chicken coop when it gets done. Wish I wasn’t afraid of chickens, but things that happened to me in my childhood make me afraid of them.

Lorita you take care of yourself

Ron how dud you do down there in Louisiana?

if you pray we all need to pray for those poor people in western North Carolina who still really do not have housing. They are trying to get by in RVs, tents etc. and I really feel for them. Know you don’t see much of anything nationally about this now. But the situation has not gone away. Also Feel for those that are trying to help them. It’s a very over whelming task. As in any situation, there are also people that are trying to take advantage of those poor people. Many kind people in our world but some are not. I have found a place though called Precision Grading in Saluda, North Carolina. If you Google them, you will find their website. Make sure it’s the one in Saluda, North Carolina. You probably also will see some YouTube videos pop up too that you can look at. He seems to have a very heavy heart for his neighbors and he’s doing his very best to help his neighbors with very high-quality work. It’s a very overwhelming and slow process for them. If you pray, they need our prayers for the strength, means and encouragement they need to help others. I almost feel like I know these people and I wonder if someday maybe when they are less busy if I could take a trip there and meet them, I would like to but I’m not a very good traveler. They surely have been through something. I know during recent rains some people who had bridges for access lost it again. I don’t know if the bridges they had were temporary bridges or if they were supposed to have been permanent bridges, I’m not sure. But I know Jake who owns the company went back and checked on all his bridges and they were fine. High quality bridges are really what they need because anything less probably isn’t really going to help them and sort of a waste of funds if you understand what I’m saying. There are many other helping Jake also by supplying materials, some are helping him maintain his equipment as you can imagine this is very hard on his equipment. He is not charging anyone unless their insurance will cover. But if you’ve been following the situation, you know very few if any will have insurance coverage. Flood insurance was not even available to a lot of these people as they were not considered to be in a flood zone.

    Take care everyone

If you like to read, "Northeaster" by Cathie Pelletier is a fabulous book about the blizzard of 1952 in the northeastern states.

    Good morning.

Jerilynn— Your chickens deserve swings. One of my nieces has the Taj Mahal of coops for her flock. It's huge and multistoried with all manner of amusements for the residents. It's big enough for she and her husband to invite friends in. She decorates it for holidays as well.

Jehjeh— That's interesting about snow in Seattle. I have friends who are recent transplants— she's from the Hudson Valley and he's from Boston. They love Seattle but shake their heads at the lack of snow preparedness.

Mint— The aftermath of flooding can take years to fix. I really feel for those people. When my old neighborhood was destroyed, most folks who elected to rebuild moved into travel trailers for at least a year or two. At least the community and local infrastructure wasn't impacted. Having stores, banks, doctors, etc untouched made a huge difference. They were fortunate that funds were available to raise their homes above recent flood levels, but it took a while for the funding to be released and for the work to be done. We opted to allow the county to buy our property out to be annexed onto the local park instead. DH was over dealing with the flooding; I considered rebuilding but given my knees, it's best we didn't.

It's cold here this morning and windy. I'm going to take mom grocery shopping later, but she'd not coming to Costco with me. I need a couple things there and gas before I go to the regular store. She doesn't breathe well in cold or wind, but she's been home alone most of the last week which makes her a little goofy.

Thursday, she has a hair appointment, and we take the cat back to the vet. She was supposed to Uber to the salon last Friday, but her Uber never showed. The joke was on her, the stylist had to call out and mom hadn't answered the phone when they called to reschedule her. I hope the vet is pleased with the cat's lungs because I am over torturing the poor thing. She yowls, pants and eliminates in her carrier which is no picnic for any of us.

    Hello All My Porch Friends.

I'm still out here and doing well here in Arizona. I have had a few set backs in the past few months. My computer quit working so I have pretty much been out of sight for a few months.

I also discovered that I don't see as well as I should for driving. I had coteract surgery in February and I thought my sight was real good, but I was not seeing sharp when driving. I went to the eye doctor and I'm getting glasses for driving.

Three months ago the few teeth I had left 8, started hurting so off to the dentist I went and I needed gum surgery and the teeth removed. The decision was that I would have implants put in to hold the dentures during this surgery. I'm still dealing with the problems 😒 that created. I go back to the dentist in 2 weeks to be fitted for my teeth.

The worst thing that happened is 3 days ago my younger cat, Emmy accidently got out and took off she was found by animal control 1.5 miles away, she had been hit and was killed by a car.

Sorry for all this bad news, but that's all I have. 😪

My daughter got me a tablet for Christmas so now I'm able to post. I wish you were all here I need lots of hugs. Please pray that I can overcome this guilt I have about Emmy getting out. 😪

    Hugs Zetta

Zetta, so happy to see your post. We have been worrying about you and we had no way to contact you. Sorry for all that's happening to you. Please don't feel guilty about Emma. It could happen to anyone. I have to be careful when I let the GPs out because a cat will get under them and slip out. It happened a week ago and I just happened to see the cat on the porch. Glad you got a tablet I have two and they drive me nuts sometimes. They will print things I didn't type.

Very cold here but the sun just came out. Looks like we may get 3-4" of snow the end of the week. I hope not. Carl, I took off my gloves as soon as I got the ice out of the tank and pur my hands in my pocket. I haven't been out today. I saw a Couple of cows across the pond looking for water, I guess. I do hope they have cut the ice for them.

Just made some Bear Creek creamy potato soup. I make it, then use an immersion blender to get the of the tiny pieces of potato, then add cubed cooked potatoes. It makes eight cups so guess I'm set. Still have cornbread to crumble some in the soup. Guess I should ho to the mailbox since I haven't been this week. May cut the ice in the water tanks while I'm out.

Eagle, I bet you all get snow, too. Unused to like to get out in the snow, but not now. The Pyrenees love it. Just fed them along with their probiotic, vitamin and glucosamine. I can remember to give theirs but forget mine.

Zetta, Wagon Train just came on. Do you still watch it?

Thanks, Judith. Maybe I should order a pair.

Came in just now from checking the water tanks. Still halffull but with a 1-2" almost tank sized piece of ice in them. A cow came up to drink and watched me break the ice and get it out of the tank. I pulled them up out of the water, grabbed the pieces and got them out of the water. Then the cow came over and drank. Repeated this with the other tank.

Decided to go to mailbox but thought I would start the PU and let it run while I was gone. Wouldn't start. Car did so went down and drove up to see if the girls had hay. Looks like they brought another creepfeeder. Girls were scattered but looked okay.

Came back and picked up the mail. Saw a box FedEx had left down there . It was the electric heater I ordered so brought it home. The car said I needed to put air in tires. They looked okay but tried. Couldn't get the top off the Air valves so put the car in the carport and came inside. But, at least the soup and cornbread was good.

    Good for you, David.

Suppose to have a wintery mix end of the week, but here in North Louisiana it changes from day to day, sometimes hour to hour.

Had a bad 2024; Lou dying, scattered pnemonia in both lungs and neck injury from a fall. Was hoping for a good 2025, but not starting that way. Neck has gotten worse; went to VA for follow up on prostate cancer and had Neck and back xrays. Waiting on results if xrays, had voice mail from radiation oncologist that she wants to see me next week. PSA has gone up from 0.1 last year to 2.7 today. 😒

Zetta, so good to see you back and so sorry about your Emmy. Please grant yourself some grace. You loved her.

Ron, sorry to hear about your results but maybe catching early is good. Fingers crossed and prayers.

We just had another baby. Don't even know if it's a boy or girl. The Mama is Flopsy's Sister who escaped the stable yesterday. But she came in the hall of the barn to kid. DH got her up in the stable again. Too busy to get pictures. Maybe tomorrow.

Rest well, stay warm, dry and safe in the weather. Lorita, are you wearing your Alert when you go outside??? Big warm hugs to everyone.

Lorita, I'm not near the fires but they are out of control! Several homes have burned in the Pacific Palisades area, think Beverly Hills by the sea, a high end area. Ten thousand homes are threatened and thirty thousand people are under mandatory evacuation. Some people in this area have horses, so there is a large animal shelter for them to be brought to if they can get out in time. Those areas have winding roads, not at all safe under smoke. The fire is burning down lifeguard towers--that means it's reached the beach. Santa Monica is under mandatory evacuation order. The wind is so strong that flames are blowing horizontally.

I went to the market but forgot to get cornbread. I'm thinking about cornbread after all this cornbread talk.

Zetta, I'm so sorry to learn about Emma!

Ron, I'm sorry about your PSA, I hope the oncologist will be able to help you.

JeriLynn, I'm glad mama goat came back inside to give birth.

David, you're on a roll with those bongo wins!
