Lorita, what is Rusty? A squirrel? One of my aunts kept the squirrels out of her bird feeder by making a squirrel feeder atop a fence post. It was just a big nail driven vertically into the post top with an ear of corn spiked on it. Squirrels love corn, as anyone who has tried to raise corn near the woods knows.
If I get a dog I will get two, so they aren't lonely when I go somewhere without them. I used to work with a woman who shut her dog in a windowless bathroom all day while she was at work. I wouldn't have a dog if I couldn't do better than that.
My son loves dogs. He shared a beagle named Walter when he lived in an RCF that had been built as a hospital about 1890. They had to dig up the sewer line for repairs, and the reburied dirt was odorous. Walter had the most fun sniffing that dirt! It held odors that had been buried for decades. I guess if you are a connoisseur of odors, as beagles are, an old sewer line is about as good as it gets.
Elephants are quite intelligent and probably good company, but I don't think my yard is large enough for a pair of them. (I'm kidding, Iris, I know what you mean.)
A vet is a good idea. Also, a woman with whom I worked before I retired is involved with rehoming dogs. Her mother, who lives next door to her, spends much of her time on it and typically has a half dozen foster dogs.

Carl, Rusty is a squirrel. From time to time there might be two and one time I saw three but mostly just Rusty- a red squirrel. One time I saw him hanging onto a bird feeder with his back feet. He would raise up and get a sunflower seed out of the birdfeeder, then go back down, then up. We have never had squirrels before so guess that's why I am so intrigued with him.
Iris, I saw one of the elephants they are going to move to Tulsa. Bobby, I think they called him. They will love having more space. A few days ago the news showed a surprise baby giraffe that no one expected.I think that was in Tulsa but not sure. The baby was 6 ft. Tall and weighed 120.
Caro Lynn, We've had caladiums for many years. Judith told me about Florida Boys and I have ordered from them twice. They are beautiful. Lastly year I bought bulbs from WM. They were pretty but as much as the others. I have two metals pots inside the yard fence where I have them and a blue mineral tub outside the yard fence. I think I read they are toxic. But the dogs have never bothered them. One year the cows ate the ones outside the yard with no ill effects I noticed . They came back and were prettier and more lush than ever. I plant the bulbs when the ground has warned up some. No maintenance required except watering. They do die after frost but Judith dug hers one year to keep over..
Awful, tragic thing happened early this morning near Pryor in NE Okla.. A young msn hit a deer with his car. He called his patents and they came to help. Another car hit his car and pinned the boy's dad and killed him. The car did stay til Troopers came. That young man will never forgive himself for calling his dad to come. The boy was injured but his mother was uninjured. Bad things happen when we least expect it.
0 -
You are right, Lorita. We never know when we walk out the door if we are coming back. The young man shouldn't blame himself, but it's hard not to.
0 -
I would never consider a cat. They do not go for a walk with you…they do not go for a ride in the car…they do not fetch anything ..they get up on counters…they destroy plants and flowers in the house etc, etc etc (so said the king of Siam).
We only ever had one small dog…decided it was a cute pet but not exactly a dog…lol We usually had two dogs at a time. Not certain that they had much to do with each other.
White Christmas caladium is the one I always get. You can dig up and winter over if you are clever. Planted the next year they will likely be larger.
Florida Boys is a family operation and enjoyable to work with.
1 -
I've never raised caladiums or gladiolis, but I understand they can't stand midwest winters. You have to dig up the bulbs before it freezes and replant them after Mother's Day, or treat them as annuals and plant new every year. My grandfather mistook Grandma's gladioli bulbs for potatoes and fried them with onions one winter. It was a good dinner but left nothing to plant. The poor man. He farmed all his life, made one mistake, and I'm still talking about it 50 years after his death.
Some plants like caladiums can be grown indoors so you could use them as house plants in winter. I would repot them if I brought them in to keep insect pests out of the house. I repotted a plant to take in one fall and found a whole nest of ants in the pot.

Good evening friends.
Lorita, sad about the car accident. Such a tragedy. I was also saddened to hear that Todd isn't doing well. I am glad you are helping him to get back on his feet.
Carl, glad you are thinking about a dog…they are good company.
JeriLynn, you are doing great with Speck. I think you are an animal whisperer!
HB, I am happy to hear that your mother is improving and you are having a bit more time to yourself.
Ron, thinking of you and praying you are feeling better physically and emotionally.
Zetta, glad you are enjoying yoga. It can be very relaxing. I take a class at the library twice a week called "Fit for Life." There are 6 different videos that we exercise to. It feels great to do this!
GG, so good that you went to visit your aunt. I'm sure she appreciated seeing the two of you.
CaroLynne, always good to hear from you and I hope you are feeling better as the days go on. Losing a loved one is so hard!
Iris, when will you be going to Kenya? That should be an amazing trip! Will you go on a safari?
I got a redbud seedling, about 2 1/2 ft tall, from the library. They were giving them out for Arbor Day. I planted it today. Hope it does well. It is bare root, and dormant so we'll see what happens. Regarding plants, my aspen and river birches are beginning to leaf out, as is my sugar maple. I have a medium sized weeping willow and hubby and I trimmed it as its low hanging branches made it hard to get under it to mow. Also removed 4 little arborvitae - I don't care for them, they didn't look healthy and I wanted their space to plant something else. I ordered a serviceberry tree and should have it soon. I planted lettuce and spinach seeds recently and they are germinating.
Thinking of you all and reading every day.
Beth

Good to hear from you, Beth. You will love that serviceberry. In Missouri and Arkansas, serviceberry blooms when the woods are still dark and the white blooms make a beautiful sight. I didn't know they grew in Iowa but know of no reason they wouldn't.
I think my redbud is dying. The place it's planted is mostly fill, and I think the poor thing is starving. it's too close to the house anyway. I'm going to remove it when things settle down a little and plant some red oaks farther from the house. Red oak grows wild in large numbers in SW MO so they should do well whether I take good care of them or not.
All the talk of exercise makes me think I should get back into water aerobics. It is a great workout and stretch, and my bum foot and knee don't bother me because I'm not putting my weight on them. I used to enjoy aerobic dance, but it's too painful now.
It's nearly ten. I'm going to shower and get some sleep. Sleep tight, friends.

Carl, I'm not familiar with Service berries. Don't know if they grow here but should if they grow in Missouri. The only early, white blooming tree that can grow wild or not here is Dogwood. I will look it up. They and Redbud can grow wild in the woods. We have tried both but neither lived here at our home on the hill.
Goodnight everyone. Sleep tight.

The blooms are beautiful. How tall do they get?Seems I remember seeing and growing a shrub with blooms like that. The tallest I saw in town was maybe 8-10 ft. Cannot remember the name

Judith, my cat Seven used to play tennis, meaning I could throw a small ball and she could jump up in the air and bat it. She could also fetch a small toy to me when I threw it. But now that she is a senior cat, she doesn't do any of that any more.

No idea what i s going on with my previous post. Won't let me correct. Anyway been up since 5, had my juice and breakfast watched TV, added to WM order and fed the cats. Iris, I love cats. I have a whole family- daddy, mother and baby who weighs 18 lbs..
Pretty sunrise this.morning, warm and calm but rain is headed our direction. Back later.
It did let me delete the post. I didn't have a cat when growing up although we had barn cats but they were wild. When we lived in the MH all of our cats were yellow. When we moved to the farm house we had every color. My three are gray; mother and baby have stripes, daddy is soft gray. Sammy has a.bigger head like his daddy. Back later.

Dick planted a white blooming Redbud the motning of our wedding. Everyone thought it had died. I would not cut it down and it has proved to be, after a bit of a struggle, a lovely tree. He also made certain we had bridal wreaths.
You ate Glafiola bulbs and did not die???
Iris…I stand corrected…lol
Ron…please check in.
David…you are missed too
Checking out Serviceberrys
Off to Morgan Stanley….I hate to see the status of our equities but doubt the decision will be to ride out this mess.
added; favorite tree du jour is the Shade Master locust. Lorita, you might love it.

Thanks Beth, good to hear from you too. You had such a beautiful garden; did you start a new one? Would love to see pictures.
Lorita, what a tragedy for that family! I'll never forget when I lived in Miami, years ago, reading about the grandmother that didn't see her toddler granddaughter when backing out of the driveway and killed her. That must be so difficult to live with.
I'm going to order from the Florida Boys today. I can plant them in a large pot right?
I love both dogs and cats too. All creatures really, except cockroaches, palmetto bugs; those I can live without!
Judith, thought of you when I saw this. Hope to learn more about his work!
Here are my girls 😍

Caro Lynn your fur babies are really cute. I bet they're good friends. Is your cat a Scottish Fold?
Yes, you can plant the bulbs in a big pot. I have never planted them in the ground but Judith does, I plant mine in big tall pots. I ordered Royal Flush, dark red with dark green edges and Fiesta, White with green edges and red veins. I like to have red with at least one or two white ones in the planter. I also order the mediums. I have read they are toxic so you might check that if they will be around your little ones. Evidently they are not toxic to cows.I have seen them for sale growing one to a pot.
I do not like bugs either, grasshoppers for sure
0 -
CaroLynne, your Scottish fold is beautiful! Sweet little doggie too.
We had a serviceberry at the other house. Whenever we are in that town, we drive past and I noticed how beautiful it looked so decided to get another. I also considered a flowering crabapple - had 2 of them at the other place and they also are beautiful. Serviceberries have the lovely white flowers and produce blue/purple berries that are edible. They can be grown shrub-like or tree-like (single stem vs multiple stems).
We're getting a good rain today; much needed. I'm grateful.
Mint, how is your garden doing? Have you planted yet this year? I have not planted my seeds or flowers yet; but I have started my garden clean up (not too much to do here, just remove spent flowers on the hydrangeas and cut back the ornamental grasses and remove a few things that died over the winter).
Judith, the white redbud sounds lovely and has very special meaning.
David and Jo, if you are reading this, know that we miss you.
Beth

CaroLynne, what cute fur babies! I didn't know that cats came in so many breeds, until I got several different breeds.
How fitting that Ansel Adams died on Earth Day. Did he originate Earth Day?
Iris
0 -
Ansel Adams…..No he did not originate Earth Day and he was born in February. He was on the board of directors of the Sierra Club for 40 years…1934-1971.
The photo Moonrise, Hernandez New Mexico;
"It was made after sundown, there was a twilight glow on the distant peaks and clouds. The average light values of the foreground were placed on the "U" of the Weston Master meter; apparently the values of the moon and distant peaks did not lie higher than the "A" of the meter ...
Some may consider this photograph a "tour de force" but I think of it as a rather normal photograph of a typical New Mexican landscape. Twilight photography is unfortunately neglected; what may be drab and uninteresting by daylight may assume a magnificent quality in the halflight between sunset and dark."
Adams encountered a "fantastic scene", a church and cemetery near Hernandez, New Mexico, and pulled to the side of the road. Adams recalled that he yelled at his son Michael and at Wright to "Get this! Get that, for God's sake! We don't have much time!".
Desperate to capture the image in the fading light, they scrambled to set up the tripod and camera, knowing that only moments remained before the light was gone
Adams personally made 1000 prints.

Good afternoon all. It is a cool 65 degrees and raining. I've spent time on the patio with my tea just sitting, and I might go back out there.
I might be the only one, but I can't grow caladiums. Maybe I just keep putting them in the wrong spots? My spiria is putting on a show with this rain, beautiful. DH keeps 'thinking' about a garden. We've come to the conclusion this year we will just do a container garden. Just tomato's, peppers and lemon cucumbers. That will be enough to get him outside to check them and water the pots and not so much that I'm more overwhelmed with something else to do.
Lorita that is such a tragic new story. Many lives will be changed forever.
As my mom used to say - time to get off one and on two! Let's be safe everyone.

Hello Front Porch Friends.
Lorita. I'm glad you found a soup, Max, likes. Sammy, has it in the mornings and sometimes in the evenings, along with his hard food. That's nice you will be helping Todd, get on his feet.
CaroLynne. It was nice hearing from you, and thanks for remembering me.
JeriLynn. I agree with Beth, I also think you're a animal whisperer. Speck, is so pretty, I would love to have a chicken, for a pet. He looks so comfy. Is his basket open and he just lays in it?
Eaglemom. I wish I had some rain and a cup of tea. I miss the rain I had in Oregon, there is not much rain in Arizona. I do take my morning coffee on the back deck, along with 2 dogs and 3 cats in the morning for a little while, at least till my coffee is gone. I'm sure your DH, will be busy and enjoy a smaller garden.
Carl. It's wonderful that your DW, is in a nice place, with a lot of loving care. Now its time to take care of yourself. It's nice you had a good nights sleep, I hope with many more nights to follow. You will have so much love and companionship with a pet. I have always had dogs and cats, all been outstanding pets. I like having two or more at a time, because they entertain each other. Some dogs are better cuddlers then cats, but they will all love you. Here are pictures of my fur babies. This is Molly, my dog she is 11 and my cat Sammy, he's 3. They are both on my lap and we're in the recliner. This seems to be their favorite place. They play together a lot. ❤️❤️
Now that I live with my daughter and her DH, I have inherited 3 more fur babies. That is Fiona, the dog she is 2, and Lilly, she is 2 and Timmy, the black one he is 3. All 5 of these fur baby's, play together sleep together and eat together. And they love me, best companions ever. 😍 sounds like you will have help finding the right one/s. I'm looking forward to a picture.
Hugs to all, Zetta

Carl, Ron and David, where are you fellas? You all need to check in.
Ordered and received my groceries. All put away except the 40 lbs. Of bird feed. I got a.hummingbird feeder so will put it up tomorrow. I understand the little.guys are around already.
Wasn't out of anything but needed to get things delivered before we got rain and made the roads muddy.. Also received my.Gerbera daisies so have four of them, three lantana and caladium bulbs to plant. Will wait until after the rain and the soil seems up a.bit. Have several packets of flower seeds so hope I can get the beds fixed for them.
Going to rest a.bit now and watch news and weather. Zetta, loved the pictures of all the babies. They are really lots of company, for you and each other.
I haven't heard again from Todd since.night before last. He says he is so depressed and sleeps a lot. He started building a storage building in their back yard so to!d him when he gets so down to go.out and get.busy working on it.

good evening
we have had some pretty sunrises the past few days too Lorita. I think my is adjusting more and more to not having to worry about mom. I’m getting up later in the morning now not really that late though.
We have had three beautiful days of weather. My nephew has been living with me for a while now and so he helped me and we have the yard completely weeded and mulched. That’s a beautiful thing. All I have left to do is to get my grow bags refreshed. I’m not going to have near as many this year. I got rid of all of them except for in my garden area. It’s gonna cost me a bit of money, but I’m putting nothing in but supertunias in my front yard other than the few perennials that are already there. They are easy to care for and don’t require very much water. That’s a big focus of mine this year is keeping my water use down in the summer. Most of the stuff in my backyard will be from seed other than I might buy my herb plants. I’m only planning on racing tomatoes and herbs and flowers. I’ve cut way back this year. What are you going to do this year Beth?
My tulips are blooming, but they’re not gonna last that long probably because it’s hot and dry. My sister and I bought half of a beef from the Mennonites and we went out there today to pick it up and the farmers were working, the dust was flying. We were in severe drought at the end of fall. We’ve had some rain but not a lot of rain. We’ve had days of high winds which dries the soil out. We’ve had quite a bit of cloudy weather, but we don’t get that much rain.

You all have the cutest fur and feather babies! My wife is allergic to dog and cat hair so I haven't had a dog in 50 years. We went to a dog show where her sister was showing but the dog hair and talcum powder were so thick in the air that her eyes swelled and she couldn't breathe, so we had to leave. She likes dogs but there it is. Dogs, cats, and small children like to crawl in my lap. It may be because I'm soft and warm, but I like to think they are good judges of character.
I had chosen an excellent memory care facility/SNF a couple of months ago but hadn't quite decided to place her. Then the lymphoma arose and I had to place her at another SNF on a 5-day emergency basis. I learned a few minutes ago that my first choice has a vacancy and has accepted my wife for long-term care so she will move Monday morning after breakfast. Things are progressing as well as can be expected under the circumstances. There is nothing wrong with the place she is, but why not the best?
I saw my doctor this morning, after postponing the visit twice, and had blood tests drawn. I am doing better than I thought I would. My doctor thinks I am good for many more years with some stress relief and resumption of my diet and exercise program. My mother lived 96 years and my father would have done the same if he hadn't smoked, so genes are on my side.
Love that "Moonrise" picture, Caro-Lynne. It is my favorite Adams picture. Thanks for the reminder.
Talk to you later.

It's been a really nice day today - we got up to 71 degrees today with full sun. No complaints from me! I got a lot of errands done and went to the gym.
There was another story in the news today about the guy who's trying to make his Fyre Festival happen. It's been a source of amusement for me for several years now (except while he was in jail and there was no news). He just doesn't know when to quit. It's just one train wreck after another. NPR had an article today about him trying to sell off the "Fyre Festival brand." I'm wondering if he's going to end up in jail over this —- again.
HB - your ex-BIL and my brother are not so far apart. I never had actual loathing for my brother, just a lot of anger. I decided it wasn't good for me so now I avoid him - which is pretty easy since we live two large states away from each other. 🙂
JeriLynne - I'm glad that Speck is doing better!
Lorita - we used to have more squirrels than we do now, but I think it's because we seem to have more owls now.
jfkoc - we had "ghost cats". The ghost cats left paw prints on the glass kitchen table we had in San Francisco. We knew our cats didn't leave the prints because our cats knew they weren't allowed on the table. Also, one day when I got home from work I found that the two cats had worked together to roll up the top to my roll top secretary desk to get to all the cat toys inside (envelopes, tape, sticky notes, etc.). I was so impressed that I couldn't get angry with them.
Caro_Lynne - I love your little fur babies! So cute.
Zetta - I love all of your fur babies too! Seeing all of the animal photos makes me realize it's about time for us to get a couple of kitties of our own. I miss not having cats.
Carl - I'm glad that your DW will live in a great place, and that you're doing well! Good genes are nice to have.

Years ago, one of our friends had his black Olds 98 repainted and put it in his garage for the paint to cure. His daughter's cat Dooby (she was a college girl) walked all over the car, making permanent cat tracks. Not a happy guy.

Lorita…have you thought about a multi-trunked river birch…they grow fast…something to think about at our age.
0 -
Good to hear from everyone. Carl, is the SNF closer than the other one? Don't.blame you tor moving her to your first choice. I.hope you are getting some good rest now.
Mint, are those petunias supposed to be better? Petunias used to have a sweet fragrance - do these? I used to have white and purple double petunias in an old iron wash pot by the steps every year! They were beautiful but no fragrance. Nice your nephew is there to help you.
I'm going to.bed early, only had a few hours sleep last night and a 20 minute nap today. Good.night, everyone, sleep tight.

@jfkoc
Thank you so much for this study of Ansel Adams. I have a copy of this print in my home office. I love the lighting and have always wanted to know more about where, how, and when it was taken.
Adams encountered a "fantastic scene", a church and cemetery near
, and pulled to the side of the road. Adams recalled that he yelled at his son Michael and at Wright to "Get this! Get that, for God's sake! We don't have much time!".

Lorita, the SNF I have chosen is a half hour drive versus about 20 minutes for the other, but it feels like less because of the lower stress involved regarding traffic. All of the trip to the current SNF is in city traffic in which the speed limit is 60 and actual speeds are greater. Most of the trip to the preferred SNF is on rural roads and I don't feel like I'm on a racetrack.
The big difference is that the one I have chosen has an excellent memory care program and the present one is just a SNF. I chose it for its benefit to DW, not location. One of the hospice social workers said the one I have chosen is where she would want a member of her family to be, which is consistent with my assessment when I visited.
I'm getting much more rest and less stress, thank you. I was called at 5:30 AM to report she had fallen but was not injured, and at about 8:00 PM to ask permission to administer PRN meds for anxiety and agitation. While not stress free, this is much better than having to deal with these things myself and alone.
I got to sit in the sun and visit with the couple across the street for a while this afternoon after visiting DW in NH and got to watch NOVA for two hours without interruption. That doesn't sound like much if you can routinely do it, but it has been a long while since I have had the freedom to do either of those things.
It's nearly 11:00, I think I'll turn in. Sleep well
3 -
good morning
River birches are a pretty tree they have shaggy bark.
Lorita Beth made me aware of the supertunias. They spread really nicely, require very little water, and they do not require deadheading. It’s nice having my nephew living with me. But I realize when he goes, I’m really going to miss him.Carl, I understand your newfound freedom.

Morning, slept well but the cats are awake and wanting in the bedroom. Looks like it may be cloudy. Hope everyone is well this morning.
. Mint, I hope I can find those petunias plant's. Petunias do well here. Also like vinca. Maybe I can plant them in the pink bathtub this year. Nice that your nephew is with you.
