This is "Poke Salad Annie." I think Tom Jones also sang this song, I remember his voice singing: "poke...salad!"

Adam's systolic blood pressure was 240mm, very high. He is now on amlodipine. He is only nibbling at his food. I hope he does better tomorrow.

Morning; or middle of the night and I can't sleep,

Eagle this sounds like a wonderful reunion!

Never had poke salad. But I did have flour sack dresses and aprons and blouses!

We got some plants in the ground and in pots yesterday. This weather has really messed with my normal spring routines.

Peanut is FAT! Speck spent the day in the chicken run and, thankfully, everyone was glad to see her! We've identified which culprit(s) is/are eating eggs. It's Frick and Frack. So, we run to the coop to collect eggs when we hear Hoochie making a ruckus (telling us someone just laid an egg). DH will put them both in a separate area today to make sure we are correct in our suspicions. Then, I don't know. What do you do?

We were just about to "close down the house" last evening when DH came in to say he heard a baby crying in the pasture. DH thought it was Peanut. It wasn't. It was Twinkle. She is the baby of Old Girl (the broken horned goat who is blind in one eye). We got to the pasture and Old Girl was standing at the gate between two pastures. She came toward me and then turned back to the sounds of her baby crying, then turned back to look at me again. She led us right to her baby, who mischievously had managed to get half her body thru the fence to nibble/explore when she was standing in grass almost as tall as she. DH got her out and she immediately went to her Mama to nurse. She's fine. I fussed at her for looking for greener grass on the other side of the fence. And of course, since we woke up everybody else already bedded down for the evening: EVERYBODY got up and stirring and wanted pets and treats.

    If it's not one thing, it's 10. No wonder I can't sleep.

One more story, then I'm going to work on organizing the pantry.

Mr. J, who owns the hardware store in Huntland, has sold the business. Mr. J. is a crusty Vietnam Vet that I adore. He has a little bit of everything in his store and knows everybody. He doesn't LIKE everybody, lol. But he likes me. Whatever hare-brained idea or project I may have, Mr. J is right there to lovingly poke fun at me while grinning and winking at DH. He's also a farmer. Lived there all his life. We drive right past the Lowe's, Home Depot to go to Mr. J's store. Because of him. There's a little celebration at the store today. We'll be there. His daughter will stay on a while to help the new owner. It will never be the same. I'm going to miss Mr. J. DH tells everyone, "His face just lights up when JeriLynn walks in the door". I'll miss him.

OK, I'm getting up to see what I can do in that pantry. TTYL.

Good morning. Happy Train Day to those who observe.

It's lovely here on my end of the porch— sunny, cool and breezy. It'll hit 70F later.

All this talk of gardening has me feeling bad I can't right now with this splint. I should just go buy a couple pots for the front door and call it a day. I suppose I should really consult the local deer and find out what they're in the mood for. I also need to flag down a landscape crew to do my mulching. And get the trim painted.

Jerilynn-- Change is bittersweet when it's a restaurant or hardware store gets a new owner. We were fortunate that our local hardware store managed to retain its folksy charm and incredible inventory despite changing hands. The place is adorable, but I think it stays afloat by selling town-themed merch— tees, mugs, beer pints and cute signs. Last year, they held a cocktail party fundraiser for the local theater (supposedly the oldest continuously operated in the U.S.) restoration party. Folks mingled, got a drink and then ambled over to watch "The Money Pit". Personally I would have opted for "Mr. Blandings Builds his Dream House".

Eaglemom— How nice to have a friend so long. I hope you enjoy the visit.

Iris— I hope you got good news at the vet yesterday.

Gothic G— I guess you are officially a gym rat. Congratulations.

    __________________________________________________________________________________

I managed to get my trip planned. I did have to compromise on bed-size prioritizing balcony on the ocean. I contacted mom's sister and my cousin as mom will procrastinate. She needs to decide if she wants a hotel for the stay— auntie's condo is perfect for one and mom travels with a lot of gear. Plus, auntie can get opinionated about medical things she doesn't understand; she's the one who talked mom out of taking her statin without me knowing about it. There's a Doubletree on the same property as auntie's condo.

The derm appointment went well. I wasn't happy at the early time and considered sending her in an Uber, but it's good I went. When I don't go to appointments, things go sideways. The doctor asked why she was there and mom said "skin check". I explained the medical drama of the last 6 months, updated her on medication changes and mom's interest in as seen on TV supplements because of her distress at significant hair loss. Doc explained the whys and said regrowth would occur in the next couple of months. She said there were topicals, but she didn't think mom was there yet. I asked about the biotin, and doc told mom she would not recommend biotin as it can interfere with the accuracy of blood tests for thyroid function and troponins (used to detect heart attack).

The skin check was great. The derm was willing to move to annual skin checks but mom said "I get a lot out of my appointments, I like every 6 months". My head exploded. I suggested we split the difference unless there's a need to be seen sooner. Next time, I'll insist on annual checks. This is madness. I mean, we just added Infectious Disease to the roster with 4 yearly visits.

I also took her to the local independent pharmacy to transfer her prescriptions. Rite Aid is bankruptcy again and while they haven't announced a closing for her store, the one near me shuttered with no notice. She's got prescriptions from 6 different offices at Rite Aid which would make for a lot of work for me if they weren't accessible without notice.

The new guy is great. He's not only managing her transfers, he took her current meds— prescription and OTC— and supplements and created blister packs for her. In doing this, I noticed she was out of her Trintellix. She admitted to being out for a month. (Why she didn't mention this when she called me in tears last Saturday because she was out of Keflex is beyond me) Her psychiatrist prescribes it off-label for her ADHD. This explains a lot. She's been really goofy of late— so much so that I've been double checking her O2 levels. I called the psych for a refill and I hope they were able to get to it before the weekend.

Carl, there is a loblolly pine.but not what I was thinking about. Surely one of you all know what loblolly means or maybe it's an Oklahoma thing. My tablet rebels when I type loblolly.

Ron,I love cornbread and milk. I like to eat a thin slice of.onion with it and prefer warm bread. Daddy usually had a glass of corn bread and milk a couple of hours after supper.

Iris, hope Adam does well on his medicine. Many animals have the same problems as we and take the same kind of medicine for treatment. I love that song but hadn't heard it in a long time.

JeriLynn, glad you all took note of the baby crying and Twinkle was all right. If we listen to our animals and know them we know when something is wrong. I remember my mother was always concerned when she heard a cow bawl knowing something was going on that needed to be checked.

HB,glad you have your trip planned. Hope you enjoy it.

Thank you for the reminder, Mint. I will look for sure. Seems just like it was last week we were talking about the full moon. Time goes so fast.

My.left.hip hurts today so planting may not get done today.

    TTYL.

    Good morning.

I'm not sure what's on the agenda today for us. I'd like to go to a nursery, but its Saturday and will be crowded. I've got a couple of things to plant, so that maybe it. Maybe I'll attempt putting the cantilever umbrella together. I know I can do it, I want it done so that should keep me busy!!! I have a hard and fast rule - if I'm on the ground doing anything, I can only get up twice. So I'll have to have my tools ready. I'm sure DG will want to help, for approximately 5 minutes then loose interest.

There are so many graduations and graduation parties this weekend. Excitements in the air. They have their entire lives ahead of them, I can only hope they chose wisely. Our neighbor's son graduated last night from U of Houston. He's interviewed and has a job, all be it a 90 day trial. He did a summer inter job for the company last year. He ask his parents if he could live at home for the 90 days, paying rent. He didn't want to get an apartment if the job didn't work out or he didn't like it. For the last month or so he's started taking private flying lessons. He loves to travel and all of a sudden thinks being a pilot might be something to do later on. The boy has dreams. It's fun to watch.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day. I'll be back later, let's be safe.

Well, I was wondering where to plant the Berbers daisies, right? Last evening I transplanted the tiny cubes in a terra cotta planter until I decided where to put them. Put the planter on the porch swing thinking Rusty might not get up there. This morning when I fed the birds, there was not a bit of green in the planters .Rusty found them.. Why doesn't he eat the wild violets? I think that's what I will put in the pot on the steps.Guese I don't have to think about where to put the daisiis.

Good I brought the geranium inside last night. Maybe I will buy one daisy but Doubt I could even put it in a hanging basket because he gets to the bird feeders that hang. I have created a monster! But he is cute.

Eagle, at least you can get up twice. I think one is my limit. Be careful.

Knew Loblolly the tree but not the fish. Their needles are light gree, they are fast growing and would look wonderful in a group of 5-11. Hmmm…where can I put 5. I am still looking where to put totems (one for each family member/ they get to paint their own.

Try cornbread with honey….it is the best!

You know cornbread is also good crumbled in canned peaches and juice. I just like cornbread. Loblolly fish, Judith?

Loblolly around here means a place that started out wet but has been driven through or walked through so it is just like a soft mudpie. You can get stuck in those. When I went over to check on Darwin I saw where our cows had been walking and standing in an area in the corner of the pasture that had turned into a loblolly. He calls it that too. Maybe it is an Oklahoma or country thing.

I think I will try to plant the Caladiums today. I think the planters are tall enough that Rusty can't get to them. I have heard they, like elephant ears, are toxic, however the cows ate the ones outside the yard a year or so ago with no ill effects we noticed. And, they grew back thicker and prettier than ever.

    Good morning. I love cornbread.

HB, how old is your mom? I used to take a high dose of biotin, but I was not aware that it interfered with thyroid and troponin blood levels. Thanks for the heads-up!

Adam seems okay this morning. I will be traveling next week and he and Sammie, my other cat, will be visiting a pet hotel while I am away.

Iris, happy that Sammie is better today. Does he have to take medicine every day?

How long will You be gone on your trip? I know you must be so excited.

Another thing about cornbread-- do you all like it with sugar in it or not? My sister always added a little sugar. It was good but I like it without.

Beautiful day to be outside. Just saw Rusty eating sunflower seeds, guess he has finished his peanuts and apple. Should be full after eating the daisy foliage.

    @Iris L.

I'm glad Adam seems better. Interesting name for a cat.

Mom is 87. I was yesterday-years-old when I found out. And I have my thyroid function tested at least yearly. I haven't taken biotin for years.

Given mom's age troponin levels are one of the first things done in the ED triage before sending her for an EKG regardless of symptoms.

There used to be a Greek restaurant in Reed's Spring, MO that had a squirrel feeder outside the large dining room windows. That was the fattest squirrel I ever saw. He got all he wanted to eat and didn't have to run away from anything, and I thought he was a groundhog first time I saw him waddling around. Maybe you can have hanging plants after Rusty gets too fat to climb.

My wife put sugar and eggs in corn bread, and it was really good, kind of a yellow cake with corn flavor. It's good without sugar too. My camping recipe had powdered milk, but no eggs or sugar, and I liked it.

I saw a Big Boy tomato plant for sale at the supermarket the other day for $25, potted in a plastic gallon pot with a built-in cage to hold up the vines. I doubt a Big Boy would do well in a gallon of soil, so I left it. I'd have to carry it inside every night to keep the deer away from it. It's too windy to grow container tomatoes where I live anyway. I tried it once and they kept blowing over.

The Amish farmers have a farmer's market in Bolivar MO every Friday, and a man buys a pickup load every week to sell retail in a strip mall parking lot in Springfield. I'll probably just buy tomatoes, cucumbers, melons, and new potatoes from him like I did last summer.

Lorita, what you call a loblolly we call a mudhole. As in, "I'm going to kick you into a puddle and stomp it into a mudhole." Loblolly must be an Oklahoma thing.

GG was the one who brought up loblolly fish

No, loblolly is not Oklahoman… I knew about the mud all the way up in Chicago.

Cornbread…everyone I know uses Jiffy and adds just a tad of sugar. A tad, by the way, is larger than a bit which is larger than a pinch…lol

    Iris…don't forget to send pics

Judith, how does a tad of sugar in the mix relate to a dollop of honey after the bread is cooked? 🤔

My great-grandfather dedicated one day a year to getting enough cornmeal to have cornbread. He raised corn and hauled sacks of shelled corn to the mill in his horse-drawn wagon to trade for sacks of cornmeal. It was a 20-mile round trip and took all day. That was 100 years ago, before the roads were paved and before there was "Jiffy" anything.

Mud, mudholes and loblo!lies. I.have been stuck in my share of them.

Judith, that was the measurements my grandma used. When'she would bake a cake she always baked a spoonful or two of the batter. From that she could tell if she needed to add more leavening or something else. She always left a little of the batter in the mixing bowl for me and I would eat that along with the bit she had baked. Still wish I had her recipe for tea cakes. They were so good. Sort of like soft sugar cookies.

I don't use.Jiffy mix for cornbread. I use Shawnees cornmeal mix, white, and add an egg and milk. I heat some oil in an iron skillet, pour it in the batter, mix, then add the batter to the skillet and it sizzles. Then bake it. I think I froze some of the last I made. Also froze some of the last beans I cooked.

I think I twisted the wrong way when I carried or emptied those sacks of potting soil yesterday. My left hip, side and ribs have hurt today. I need to listen to you, Judith. I did get the.bulbs planted and the vinca transplanted. I think I will put the sweet potato plants in a hanging basket and hope Rusty doesn't see them. Carl, the. Bird feeder is three feet higher than the porch banister and I have seen Rusty hanging upside down on the feeder eating bird feed.

Talked to Bryon and he will mow next week after work. He said last summer they filled five gallon buckets half full of potting soil and planted tomato plants. After they had gotten bigger every morning one.bucket would have only a 4" stem.left. That happened two or three times. He said one night he was sitting on the porch and a rabbit came up and got in a bucket. He said he didn't know how but it did. Everyone is !ooking.for something to est.

Marie, that's what it is - a thick gruel of mud but bigger in area than a mudhole. The one I saw yesterday was probably 20x,20. made by the cows walking around and around.

    Good night, everyone. Sleep tight.

I guess I'll have a loblolly of oatmeal in the morning, then. I thought loblolly was just a tree. I learn something every time I come here.

I may have wronged the deer I blamed for the loss of my last tomato plants. It may have been the rabbits. Either way, no tomatoes for me. The man next door manages to grow tomatoes and green beans and squash but he has pretty good fencing.

Good night, Lorita and all. Sleep tight.

White Lilly Cornmeal Mix, Crisco heated in the cast iron skillet, buttermilk, egg, a teaspoon of bacon grease in the mixture. NO sugar, lol. Hot buttered cornbread with a dollop of molasses is my fave. I like honey too, but the molasses has a good smoky flavor. I only use Jiffy if I want to make a quick batch of muffins for red beans/rice.

There was a nice turn out at the Store for Mr. J yesterday. He had tears in his eyes. He told us that he will soon have to begin dialysis and that became the deciding factor in selling the business. I did overhear him asking DH for directions to our house.

GOOGLE says: The word "loblolly" has several colloquial uses:

I was going to turn the car around in the pasture yesterday and DH redirected me…. I thought, well he doesn't want me to make a LOBLOLLY out there!

Spring planting: well, we put more flowers in the beds and set out tomatoes, onions, and put some okra seed in the garden yesterday. Bought some peaches/cream corn seed from Mr. J yesterday but it was pouring rain so planting that had to wait. Our neighbor has already planted 1000 acres of cotton and has 1000 to go. He may have to re-plant the first crop, it's already turning yellow from the rain. The strawberry season is a bust. Too much rain.

Eagle, DH bought a new patio and a pool deck umbrella last year. I broke one trying to raise it. He was able to fix it but I am now restricted from umbrella duty. Just as well, those things are hard to deal with.

Iris, I'm glad Adam is better. Ron, how are you? Adjusting to the medication changes OK? Rest and heating pad for you today Lorita. You're like us, you need a "hired man" to just be around to help with the big stuff. DH won't give in to that idea either. I could keep somebody busy here all the time. HB, I'm excited about your trip.

Light is beginning outside my window. Guess I'll go get the chickens out before DH gets out of bed. You all have a good day and a Happy Mother's Day to the Mamas. We have church and Costco for glasses and groceries today so I'll TTYL.

Thinking of you all on Mother's Day and wishing you a pleasant one.

I made homemade cornbread as a treat for DS and DH. It did not go well. I thought it was great, but they are Team Jiffy. Sometimes I throw some pickled jalapenos in the batter if it's a side to chili.

Dinner was lovely except that mom decided to passive-aggressively wear heels to dinner. She was pissed that I called her out on letting herself run out of her Trintellix. Not only did she have serious brain fog and a worsening tremor, but she also risked SSRI discontinuation syndrome. My niece picked up, took one look at the shoes and tried to talk her into something else but failed. Our table was on the far end of a flagstone patio and she was reeling like a drunk. I've talked about this with her before. Her doctors and PTs have told her not to wear heels. I am faced with either removing all her heels from the house or just refusing to take her anywhere in them.
