Good luck on that, Judith. I have everything in jars or LocknLock to keep them.out. I doubt peppermint will work because they get.into my wrapped Starlight mints which are peppermint so they are also in airtight containers. However, there are some dead ones in the wrappers, too.

Iris, your trip sounds fabulous! I loved seeing the photos. Please continue to post pictures when you have a chance. How was the Orange party? Just like HB, if I were needing to participate in an orange party I'd have to buy something (OR, I could wear the tank top, tee shirt and/or shorts that are orange). I noted that many of the cruise lines have White Parties; I am guessing you are on Holland America as they have the Orange party. When we went to AK we cruised Holland America and it was wonderful. Have fun! Also, correct me if I'm wrong, but the last couple of cruises we've been on formal night wasn't all that formal. A lot of women wore pants or short dresses. I guess some people also go to the buffet rather than dressing up.

JeriLynn, good luck with your clean out. I cannot believe all the items she had in her AL apartment. When my mom was in AL, she had a couch, recliner, dinette, microwave, bedroom set, 2 tvs and her clothing. That's all. We had cleaned out her house to sell when she went to AL and the items didn't go with her (no room and no need).

Zetta, hope you enjoy your new home. I think you will like the climate a lot better than Arizona's. Can't wait to hear about it after you get settled.

HB, I hope your medical tests come out good. How is your arm? You are kind of like the Energizer Bunny; you just keep going! You sort of have to when you have all the family responsibilities. Glad you had a break this weekend. I think you should request return of your swimsuit cover up. Your mom could say she made a mistake and that it belongs to you.

Lorita, you too are like the Energizer Bunny! I don't know how you keep up with everything that you do! You are an inspiration.

Carl, you are doing a great job just plain LIVING. You are filling your days with activities that you enjoy and being with other people. I know you miss Kathy, but nonetheless you are doing your best to enjoy the life you have now.

Ron, I am sorry about your test results. I said a prayer for you. I am so glad you are close to family now. That was a wise decision.

GG, sounds like you are doing well. Do you get enough protein? I wonder about your ladies who don't eat meat. Some say we should get 60-100 grams of protein daily. I can't hit 100 but I can do 60.

Mint, hope all is well with you and your family. How is your garden doing? My tomatoes are slow to ripen but there are many on the vine. I had a few cucumbers then that plant got powdery mildew and I pulled it. I have another cucumber plant coming on (volunteer). We have been buying excellent sweet corn; I hope to freeze some.

Eve, a warm welcome to you.

Hello, rockers. Sorry I have been out of touch. Last weekend I travelled to Detroit for a party my sister was giving for her daughter and her grandson. He is eight, and for a variety of reasons, I still had not met him face-to-face. They live in Richmond, VA.
The party was great, and the visit went well until I managed to slide down her carpeted stairs Saturday at midnight wearing socks. My right foot bent backwards beneath me. So I found myself in urgent care the next morning getting an x-ray. They said nothing is broken, but it is a really bad sprain, and they sent me home in a giant walking boot.
This made flying home the next day complicated. But thanks to very good care from Delta and Lyft, I made it! Since then, I am leaning on my neighbors for help and navigating the subways with that darned boot when I must. It isn’t easy.
It seems like a lot has been going on since I have been AWOL.

Ron, you have beautiful grandchildren and a beautiful DIL. I am sorry that Friday’s news was hard and hope that you will get better clarity on Monday.

Eve, welcome! I am pretty new to the porch myself.

HB, Your mom is a trip. She really keeps you on your toes, even when you’re not with her!

Lorita, I am so sorry that you are still having to deal with Sears over that fridge. I hope it gets resolved soon.

Iris, the cruise and your first meal look great. Love seeing your pictures!

Judith, I have a friend who swears by pure Castile soap for ants. Put it where you see their tracks, and expect to reapply. Nontoxic to everybody else. I wonder if the peppermint version would be even better.

We are on our last day of 90-degree heat here. Supposed to finally break tonight. I am spending the weekend with my feet up and staying off the subway. You should have seen how much time the TSA agent in Detroit spent on my boot.

Beth— The coverup will be returned by niece when she gets home.

I texted her to complain about mom's goofiness and they've had a good laugh about it and will get it back to me discretely when they return. She doesn't need to know.

One of my constant gripes about mom is her propensity to want exactly whatever it is I have. Maybe she has a similar coverup; I'm not sure. Seriously, if I have a new shirt, she wants to know where I got and buys herself one. She even did this with our iPhones despite me preferring a smaller SE and her really needing something larger. And yes, she insisted on the same exact case. She wanted me to download the picture I use as wallpaper on my phone on hers, but I put my foot down. She still thinks I am being ridiculous for saying no.

Tigersmom, I have twice in my life been in walking casts or boots, and they are a total pain. Crossing a street in a city is scary when you know you can't run if a turning car is bearing down on you! Hope you don't have to wear it too long! I have heard that TSA has stopped checking shoes, but apparently that doesn't apply to walking boots. I hope that hurricane (Erin?) isn't headed toward New York.

We're under a heat advisory here through tomorrow, with maybe a thunderstorm this evening. I saw lightning last night when I was driving home from a friend's home, but the rain was slight and ten miles away. My friends have been staying in a lot. He has COPD and she has health problems as well, and humid 97-degree weather isn't good.

Eve, I am sorry your life has brought you to us, but you are very welcome to join us. Caring for a spouse with AD is hard, and friends are priceless.

Ron, it sounds like you are having a pretty good time, between doctor visits. I hope the doctors can help you so you can keep it up!

HB, I am on the Holland America Eurodam.

I've run into some trouble. I've been seasick since last night after dinner. I am still seasick. I had one episode of vomiting and was unable to have breakfast or lunch. I had some ginger ale. I put an ear plug in my left ear, this is supposed to help. Today is a sea day so I've been in the cabin all day.

I fell in the bathroom getting out of the shower. And the air conditioner is too cold. Three people have been to check it but have done nothing to warm the room.

    I'll keep you posted

Good afternoon! Today’s weather was cooler with a breeze, a welcome break from the heat of the past week. My husband has always found it challenging to avoid collecting things he “might need later” but for some reason isn’t protesting my clearing things out. I had been looking to move to Colorado or Missouri but with his diagnosis we’ll stay put.

HB - thanks for pointing out the references on this site. That’ll come in handy. Trying not to overwhelm myself and appreciate resources I can take in over time.

Eaglemom - thanks for the warm welcome! I’m already feeling less alone and enjoy not just the support, but getting to know everyone.

Ron - it sounds like you’ll have a very busy Monday. I hope your appointments go well. My thoughts are with you. My husband had 3 rather intense appointments last Thursday, meeting with neuro psychologists, etc. the news wasn’t good but at least we have answers.

Going to sit on our porch - well, back deck - for a bit now to relax my mind and watch the deer.

    Take good care all.

    Hello Porch Friends.

Lorita. I'm glad you did not get scammed. My DD fixed my phone so any unrecognized call, goes right to vmail. I also see that at times they have The Virginian, on in place of Wagon Train, but I have another channel that also has Wagon Train, on it.

Eve. Welcome to the front porch. This porch is a very comforting place to be. My DH passed away 7 years ago. I found this page on the alzheimer's website, 9 years ago. I found so much comfort and a lot of loving support here, I return almost daily just to keep up with my friends on the porch. So pull up a rocker and join us.

Carl. I'm sure there are a lot of places in Arizona, that are beautiful. We are in Maricopa, its a pretty little town, but the heat is a killer, for those of us that are used to cooler weather. I also ate lots of Spam, when I was a kid. After I got married, Spam, usually was our Sunday dinner.

GG. I would like to talk to your friend, so she can tell me about you and Peggy. Maybe we can meet for coffee, after I get settled. I don't go out to often, but I'm always ready to go have coffee. Sounds like you really get a work out at the gym. Yoga got to be too much for me. We stopped going for awhile we might start up again after we get settled. I think I pulled something in my glutes, it hurts sometimes to walk. What's a good mussel relaxer to take? You must be pretty young, to go to the gym and work out as hard as you do.

Iris. That is beautiful pictures you shared. I love that tub, i thought jacuzzi tubs had jets coming out the side? Maybe i just did not see them. Your dinner looked good, I want that dessert 🍨 my DD works from home, but she is one of the cruise planners. Her job comes with a lot of good benefits.

Mint. Yes im on the move again. I was in Oregon, for most of my life, I really don't like all this moving around. But my SILs job moves him as needed. They are telling him this job in Bosie, Idaho could be any where between 5 and 10 years. If they move him again, I might decide to stay with my son in Oregon.

Ron. Im glad to hear your able to get your appointments close together. Make sure your getting lots of rest so you can keep up with your family. That's advice I need to take.

Beth. Your so right i do miss the cooler weather. I will be there soon. We're leaving here on September 30, it will be a 2 day drive.

Eaglemom. My DD has moved so many times, she's got this all planned ahead. We will not be having to load boxes. The moving van will be here on September 28th they will pack and load everything, we don't want to take with us. They will also be leaving on September 30, it will take them 7 to 10 days to get our load to Bosie. That chicken noodle soup, with potatoes sounds gross.

HB. Your very patient with your mom and all her traveling buddies. I hope they don't stress you out to much. Molly is a good traveler, she loves going in the car. Sammy not too much, he has a cat carrier that's big enough for a cat box and his food and blanket. My DD dog Fiona will be in the truck with my SIL, she gets real stressed in the truck, so we will get some meds from the vet for her. My DD 2 cats will be in another cat carrier in ths car with us.

    Hugs to all Zetta

Carl - Vikings looking for spam, and Viking kitties looking for the western shore (singing The Immigrant Song by Led Zeppelin). Yes, I'm easily amused.

About Depression Food - I think the food that my parents made periodically that fits that description would be hot dogs and fried potatoes. You slice the hot dogs and potatoes (kind of like home fries), add onions, and then sauté until done.

Judith - John Cleese is in the spam sketch. Monty Python's Flying Circus is a similar vintage as Fawlty Towers, and if you liked Towers, you'd probably like Monty Python. It's sillier though, but John Cleese is always great as the straight man. I think Monty Python came first, but I'm 100% sure on that.

eaglemom - I've never heard of the mashed potato and chicken noodle soup "mash up", but I'm with you, it sounds gross. I've never been a fan of mashed potatoes to begin with ….

Hi Eve - welcome to the porch! I'm from California (I spent more than 20+ years in San Francisco), but am now in Washington state. I drive up and down 5 on a fairly regular basis since all of my family is in CA, so I end up spending time in Yreka.

Iris - we've also cooked with seitan (I've had those same satan thoughts as you!!). One time we went to a sandwich place and had BBQ seitan on a bun. It was delicious!

I hope your cruise gets better and that your seasickness gets under control. That's no fun at all. The food looks fabulous, and I hope you can enjoy it. Years ago, my s.o. and I, his mom, and my parents, all went on a cruise to Alaska, and it was wonderful.

HB - I'd be pretty put out if my rare beach days got compromised in that way. At least your mom isn't giving away any more of your clothes. Man. I'm glad you're going to get your cover up back.

Beth - I'm with you and cruises - I have nothing white or orange in my wardrobe, neither of those colors look good on me. I didn't even wear white to my own wedding. 🙂

I keep track of my protein, and I think I'm doing pretty well on that front. If I'm working out with my trainer, I start the day with a protein bar (14 grams of protein). My s.o. and I eat a lot of salmon, like we did today. Yesterday we had vegetarian chili with five different kinds of beans in it. We also eat tofu on a regular basis. But I won't lie, it's something I have to monitor.

tigersmom - I'm sorry about your foot! It sounds painful. TSA agents get so weird about the most random things. One time my s.o. had a portable electric tea kettle in his carry-on (it's tiny, mostly made of silicone so squishes down to nothing). The TSA agent was so bewildered by it, he called over his buddies to check it out. Then they asked our permission to have a training session about it.

Zetta - Let me know when you're all settled and I'll connect you with my friend. I'm sure you'll like her, and I'm sure she'll tell you tales from out of school. 😄 Her mom passed away many years ago from Alzheimer's and FTD (just like Peggy), and she still takes part in studies at UC San Francisco medical center. So sadly, Alzheimer's is throughout our lives.

I'm not that young (but thank you)! I became medicare age a few years ago, which is bizarre to me, but there it is. I've always been active, and all of that is paying off now that I'm officially old. I'll keep doing it until I can't - and I'm very aware that there will come a day when I can't. And I'm sure I'll be a brat about it. 🙂

Finished cleaning last night, so today is mostly a rest day. We're probably going to play board games and listen to music. I did my part last night and listened to psytrance all evening (my s.o.'s favorite music genre), so tonight it's my turn - goth/industrial.

Hi again, lots of posts today of which is good. Spent.part of the afternoon in the bedroom watching tv.

Just talked a while ago to Sandy, our friend and fellow rocker in Virginia. She doesn't post often but reads every day. I called to wish her a Happy Birthday tomorrow. She's having a chemical stress test tomorrow and a doctor's appt. the next day. Didn't know if she would be feeling like talking after that. She is going to be my age- I wonder where all those years went.

Zetta, I know you're anxious to get moved and settled again. That will be a long trip.but worth it to get to a cooler climate again. Glad most of the kids are good travelers.

    Enjoy your evening. Good night.

    Welcome from me too.

I go back to Lorita's original post. We both llive in Oklahoma. I am in Oklahoma City and she is about 1.25 hours due east of me.

I grew up in a suburb of Chicago and will always feel that is my home. I am a docent with the Oklahoma Museum of Art. Our Current exhibition of Ansel Adams. I did large format photography years ago and fell in love with "the darkroom" so leading tours for this has been especially wonderful.

My daughter and family live close by…son and his family live in St Louis…one granddaughter lives in Manhattan. She is getting married in Brooklyn soon. Venue? A farm on top of a building!!!

I paint…currently watercolor. No pets and I rarely cook but enjoy reading the recipies shared here.

So we have oldtimers as well as newcomers here. We live all over this country and in Australia. We are a beautiful family.

I started out to the grocery a while ago and noticed the couple next door was back from the lake, so I took them a cantaloupe. They invited me in to visit and gave me some cucumbers and tomatoes from their garden. I have never had better neighbors than I have here.

It was near sundown before I left, and I was pretty hungry, so I went to the Cantonese Kitchen and bought stir-fry chicken, vegetables and rice to take home. I am getting pretty lazy about cooking. I have heard that you should not eat food handed out a window unless you are a sea gull, but CK is pretty good. They are Cambodian, not Cantonese, and the food isn't really what you would eat in China, but I like it.

Blood pressure checks tomorrow at the senior center before lunch, dermatologist at his office at two. Guess I ought to put out the trash and take a shower. Talk to you all tomorrow.

I'm feeling a bit better after laying down all day and eating nothing but ginger ale. About an hour ago I went to the buffet and got some carrot soup, some fruit, a roll and mashed potatoes, along with more ginger ale.

    1000002371.jpg

    My anti-sea sickness meal

Even though the waves look calm, it was windy and apparently that created some choppiness on the water. Many people are seasick. But once we reach the Inside Passage, the water should be calmer, so I'm told.

    1000002374.jpg

    Cruising the Pacific Ocean

Lorita, the Cruise will last one week, from Saturday to Saturday. Everyone participates in a muster drill. Nowadays we watch a safety video, then visit our muster station so we know where to go. I was assured that there are enough lifeboats for everyone on board.

Ron, it's good that you were able to read your report so soon. The doctor should be able to explain the significance of the readings.

It looks like the acupuncture is helping your achalasia. I hope you continue to get relief. I scheduled an acupuncture treatment for my back on the ship tomorrow. This will be my first acupuncture, and I hope I can get some relief from my chronic back and hip pain.

HB, I dont know why some schools like to begin in the middle of summer. In NY, we always began the Monday after Labor Day. Let kids enjoy their summer!

I have a cookbook that features a Campbell's Soup as the Base for each recipe; that's just up my alley as a novice cook.

So your Auntie has a boyfriend? Way to go, Auntie!

Lorita, do you watch Dr Charles Stanley in the mornings? I often listen to his program in the mornings on the radio.

Judith, I cannot take Bonine or any anti-seasickness med because they conflict with my heart and memory medications. But the ginger ale and laying down seem to be working for me.

Beth, I'm glad you enjoyed your HAL Alaskan cruise. The Orange Oarty will be later on in the week and I did bring an orange print top. The Shop sells orange items so that no one will be left out.

I too struggle getting enough protein. Apparently I am supposed to eat less meat, which I love, snd more vegetables. I'll be working on this.

    Tigersmom, feel better real soon!

    Good morning

Judith I had 3 rounds with ants in kitchen this spring. I used terro each time, also I had fewer each time. Then i did laid sprigs of peppermint on counter last time and i have not had any since.

Beth, I think I told you I was getting Cherry tomatoes. But yesterday I picked two regular tomatoes. I think they’re better boys. The ones I’m looking forward to are still green. Tomatoes are slower ripening this year, but things were slower about getting started so I guess that’s to be expected. The flowers i started from seeds look more like early July than mid August. Seeing humming birds, gold finches and some butterflies in the garden. Glad you are getting some things.

Iris hope you have s better day.

Iris, your meal looks good to me but I have never had carrot soup. I love carrots so I know I would like it. I hope your seasickness is over now. I bet that is awful.

The scammers are at it again this morning. Still looking for a call from Sears so answered and they began the same thing -checking on a purchase. I hung up and called the. Credit card company. Of course, not them. So, beware. Running water for the girls so have to go. Back later.

Glad you're feeling better, Iris. One of life's ironies is that having a really nice cabin high in a cruise ship can mean more seasickness. There is more movement on a ship the further you are from the keel. A cabin below decks can actually be more comfortable if the traveler is prone to motion sickness. The view from the balcony is lovely, though. Thank you for the pictures. 🛳️

    Good morning.

It's very cloudy here today, but the heat has broken so I will take it. We got about 30 minutes of rain yesterday, so I may give weeding a go. My front beds are looking pretty mangy; I have had to baby my wrist.

Ron— Good luck today. I'll be thinking of you. Do you attend these appointments solo or does a family member keep you company?

Judith— I recall my Terro box said it could take close to 2 weeks for a larger infestation. My current box suggests using all 6 traps at once. Do you also treat outside? I find that really helps here.

Carl— I envy you your good neighbors. I refer to our little street as the Cul de sac of Broken Dreams. We're mostly surrounded by weirdos here. Maybe they feel the same about us. The couple next door has lived her almost 2 years and yet still has NJ registrations on their cars which is odd as this is their primary residence per the DH. The guy they bought from was in his 70s with no furniture but a bed and card table; he stayed for 5 months and sold. Before that. he lived in mom's 55+ community for a mere 4 months and complained to me that the place was "filled with old people". This would have cost him about $80K in transfer tax and agent fees to say nothing of fees to the title companies involved. And I'm like, "Dude, you are old people".

We bought the place in 1999 off my parents who were planning to move in 8 months anyway. Our previous home was destroyed in a flood in mid-September and we settled on the 15th of December. Dad was retired and living in MD at the time and mom stayed with us through the week as she finished her final year of teaching. We paid full market value for the property minus the fees they would have paid a Realtor, but neighbors believed I was some deadbeat who chased them out of their own home and was living rent-free on their dime. Haha. Needless to say, we didn't feel welcomed. I did straighten this up with the neighborhood gossip about 10 years later. Her husband actually tracked down the settlement paperwork after which she became friendly.

Tiger— I'm sorry to hear of your sprain. It sounds like a real doozy. I don't envy you the boot— they're exhausting. Would you be a candidate for a knee scooter? Friends who've been "booted" say they're life-changing.

Iris— I hope you get to calmer waters soon. Sometimes it's the current below the surface that triggers the ill-feeling. Motion sickness is the pits. MIL SIL who cruises a lot swears by the patches (in case you cruise again). She needed them on her Alaskan cruise until the Inner Passage which she loved. It was probably her favorite cruise of all time.

Mint— I hope you're enjoying your tomatoes. A friend gave me a bag on Thursday ahead of a week-long trip she's taking. DH was disappointed that they were grape tomatoes. I suspect she picked them before they were fully vine-ripened as they're not very sweet and the skins are really tough. I'm going to go through them and see about making a tomato-cucumber-onion salad.

    ________________________________________________________________________________

The boys have gone to the movies to see the newest Naked Gun. Hard pass for me; it's nice to be alone in the house for a bit.

It looks as if the travelers are headed home. I suspect mom's ETA will be 6:30-ish as she'd the second drop-off. I haven't heard any grumbling from niece or mom since Saturday afternoon, so I will assume they mostly had a good time. It'll be interesting to hear mom's take on things.

It's funny. We often discuss GPS tracking for our LO's with dementia. I track mom's phone as she has a tendency to either leave her bag in random places and this narrows down my search. The phone is comparable to her Apple Watch (Air Tags are more precise) which many posters consider in lieu of a pendant. They went out for dinner last night. This is a screen shot from my phone. I hope mom wasn't out there chasing down her entree.

I hope all have an uneventful day.

Ants…thanks for the encouragement. I. wonderred why the box contained so many baits. I am going to create a peppermint corral around the baits.

Good morning. And it is a good morning because I am not seasick! Yea! The waters are so calm now, it feels like we are still, but we are moving.

First view of Alaska—now on the way to Juneau

Carl, I'll know the next time to choose my cabin on a low deck. This bout of seasickness was awful! I lost 24 hours of my cruise experience. Along with the rolling waves I felt as though I was riding above a large engine. But I think the engine must be far from me since I am on deck 8.

    Happy Birthday to Sandy!

Lorita, those scammed are persistent. Do you have caller ID?

Zetta, you asked about the jacuzzi at the hotel. The jets were coming from the floor and the seat of the tub. I'm sorry I didn't have time for a soak.

When I was in the military, the moving service did everything. They packed up and moved the same day. All you have to do is separate what you want to carry with you, they do the rest. And they didn't break anything.

GG, did it take you a while to get comfortable eating tofu? My brother likes it, me not so much. Should I keep trying it? Will it grow on me?

HB, at my home I have great neighbors. I'm not moving. There are too many weirdos out there.

I can't wear the patches because they conflict with two of my medications. I used alternative treatments, plus a tincture of time.

Judith, I looked for ginger tea but there was none, so I have been drinking ginger ale. Next time I will bring my own ginger tea. I read that peppermint tea or peppermint candies work also. I'll bring some along next time.

Alaska is one hour behind Pacific Time. Now to breakfast.

Glad you're feeling better today, Iris. I watch Dr. Stanley on Sunday mornings after the news programs.I read that he passed away a couple of years ago. I do enjoy his sermons.

I have caller ID that shows the numbers and also the names if they're on my contact list. I normally don't answer any calls when I don't recognize the number. The same number from last week has called three times today after I answered, then hung up. But, there were three different numbers last week.

I just let the GPs out for a few minutes and checked the porch thermometer. It said 104. Alexa says 97 with heat index of 113. There are half a dozen or more girls standing in the pond which is unusual for this time of day.

This morning I couldn't change the channel on the bedroom TV turned it off for a while and it seems ok now. But, was watching the LRtv and lost the picture. Had sound but that's all and can't change channels. There has been a 3" wide, white streak on the side of the screen for a while. That black cloud hanging over my head seems to be getting bigger and darker. I have had these two TVs almost a year so the idea of things lasting just until or at the end of warranty.is true. I feel like I need to get into bed and pull the covers over my head.

Iris, there are also bands that you can wear for sea sickness prevention. No meds, they sit on a certain part of the wrist is how they help (acupressure). There are ginger capsules; there are even sea sickness ear plugs and glasses! If you cruise again, google sea sickness prevention and you will find many ideas.

Iris, I saw something on TV about the Mendenhall Glacier in Alaska this afternoon and wondered if you would see it.
