We just had a nice shower, just before my groceries were delivered. Still sprinkling a little and it's nice and cool. Wonderful weather for the first day of August. Another six weeks and our hot summer will be getting cooler. I'm ready. Need to finish putting away the groceries but wanted to get 209 started. Back later.

Ron, I'm sorry, too. I lost Charles ten and a half years ago and I still have those days when I miss him so much I can hardly stand it. I guess we never really get over our loss You're in my prayers today.

Carl, glad you're getting out and around. We have a Senior Center in our tiny town and I think they have a meal once or twice a week. I have never been. Have fun today.

someone recently sent this to me

    Gently they go, the beautiful, the tender, the kind;
Quietly they go, the intelligent, the witty, the brave.

I know.  But I do not approve.  And I am not resigned.

    Edna St Vincent Mallay

Ron…There are moments still when the memories are painful. Remembering does not help me. Grief seems to have a life of it's own. Ron, it will get easier. We learn to walk with it by our side instead of being a roadblock. When we lose a major part of our lives it is damned hard.

Caladium update…they are poking through the soil.

Weather…wonderful rain last night and blissfully overcast right now.

CPAP update…email tells me I have met my goal. What that means is not apparent.

Thanks for the recipe. I wonder if I could make an Angel food cake from a mix and then that wonderful frosting. Not as good but what do you think?

it's 78 degrees!!! Judith, angel.food cakes are good any way you fix them. We didn't have much rain but thankful for what we did get. Haybaling is in full swing right now but we need some more rain anyway. Glad your caladiums are coming up . They will grow fast.

Enjoying summer's bounty now. Cucumbers from our garden, fresh green beans from the store, sweet corn from the roadside stand, peaches from Colorado….mmmm. I hope to grow more of my own vegetables next year.

Ron, I'm sorry and praying for peace and comfort for you.

Welcome to August. In another six weeks our hot weather will get even hotter. September and October are still hot over here. But right now the temperature is very pleasant where I am since I am closer to the coast.

Judith , i think you could certainly make an angel food cake and use the coffee frosting. In my opinion, that frosting would make a rubber sponge taste good.😄I once made that cake for a dinner party and one of the guests picked off the whole back side just for the frosting. She claimed to be gluten-free.

Ron, I am sorry you are hurting, missing your Lou. I lost my DH almost ten months ago and the hurt is still raw for me, too.

    Now, I'm cake.hungry!

I saw something this morning and not really sure what it was. I went to the end of the porch and looked over the railing. There's a metal lawn chair, turned upside down, there and there was something gray drinking water that had collected. It drank a while, started to come up on the porch, saw me and jumped off. It may have been a rat but I didn't see a tail. I don't believe I have ever seen a rat but it probably was.

We only had a quarter inch of rain but it was nice. Maybe more this weekend. JeriLynn, that is horrible about the kids. There are terrible people in this world doing terrible things. I hope there is no reincarnation unless I could come back as a bird. You never know what kind of life you might have. I feel so lucky that I had good parents and a wonderful childhood.

Carol told me a man was killed by the Police two doors down from one.of her grandkids home. He wasn't keeping up his yard and the City man came to tell him to clean it up. He came out shooting. Went back in the house and when the Police came he came out shooting at them. They returned fire and killed him. A year ago a woman killed her husband and grandson, then shot herself. This was two doors down from Carol's house. You wouldn't think of things like that happening in that towǹ but you never know.

With that said, I will stop and watch Wheel of Fortune.

Back with a question -does anyone know the name of a catalog from somewhere in New England that has unique items. Scarlet found a perfume her mother liked and couldn't find. I thought they might have L'Origan. Is it Old something?

And Judith, that Coffee Crunch Cake sounds delicious! Coffee is such a good flavor for frosting, — i think because it cuts the sweetness.

That seismically active area in Russia is still having quakes and causing higher waves up to 5 feet in Hawaii. Rip currents are strong. No issues noted in SoCal so far.

Good morning. It was 59F and sunny on my end of the porch today. Be jealous, be very jealous.

    Ron— Prayers for you.

You have a Lou-shaped hole in your heart and no loving son, grandchild or exciting cabin planning can fill that hole.

Judith— Is it a new C-pap machine? Mom's current bi-pap is connected to her smartphone and tracks her progress with using it. She's used one for years, but this is the first time it's been linked to an app on her phone and it sends her messages like the one you got. It's hard telling what your goal was. It could be consecutive days of use (especially if a newly delivered device); Medicare wants to see it actually used before payment to the respiratory care provider. I think the requirement is at least 4 hr/day/70% of the time.

Lorita— I agree with Tigersmom— it's probably Vermont Country Store. They do carry vintage scents— both high end and more mass market for both men and women. They tend to be things which were very popular at one point.

You can also find things like old perfumes on ebay but I would be wary of them as they've probably oxidized and don't smell like you remember anymore.

    ______________________________________________________________________

I'm meeting friends at the roadside dive tonight. The weather should be prefect for an outdoor table and some world class fried chicken.

DH is making me crazy this morning. He's already put his cereal bowl in with the dishwasher with the clean load I ran overnight. And now he's making noises about an emergency trip to the library to renew his card. They sent an email reminder this morning. LOL, he reads fairly deep stuff that the libraries don't have even through inter-library loans. I cannot recall the last time he checked a book out but this needs to be done. Today. Before I have had a second cup of tea. I have books to go back and could pick up a couple large print things for mom. Now he's fussing that his cardiologist's office hasn't gotten back to him (he sent a message yesterday through the portal) about a test that needs pre-approval from the insurance company. It's Wednesday; we don't need to know today. We can check Monday or even Tuesday. He needs to chill until I've finished my tea and am fully awake.

I need to check on mom. There's been a change to her weekend in Rockport with my older niece. Mom's grumbling because niece's friend was added to the tip. Mom isn't happy about it and says niece did invited her. Niece says mom insisted they include the friend who can be extra. I think either "Kim Crawford" or "Kendal Jackson" (both wines) was involved. Now niece has added her sister, to avoid hurt feelings when her friend blabs about the trip as she will likely do. Mom will not be happy. I fear with the drama, this annual trip will not be something niece repeats as she did the last 2 years. It's a nice break for me.

I hope all have a pleasant day. HB

Good morning. Its lovely outside, 89 feels cool. It's not to be over 100, which is good.

We've got to attend a funeral this morning and I'm dragging my feet. I so don't want to attend. Its a neighbor, whom we know very well. She passed from ALZ, sadly. He 'thought' he was a good caretaker, and he was. But he could have done so much more for her. But that's neither here nor there. My feet dragging is the church where the service is being held. I'm uncertain about it and how 'formal' it might be. I know I have to be a big girl and go, but I'm hesitant.

Everyone have a wonderful day. Ron, as our friend used to say, I'm giving you a soft hug.

    Let's be safe everyone.

    Morning,

It was cool enough for a robe on my front porch this morning and so refreshing.

I've got supper in the works: pinto beans, smoked sausage and kraut, fried potatoes/onions, tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers and cantaloupe. Kitchen smells awesome with cornbread baking.

Eagle, I feel you in funeral attire. I've resorted to a wide legged pair of silky black pants with a longish black top and a sweater.

HB I saw the perfume on EBay and thought the same about age. And the prices!! Your DH and mine must be twinning this morning. Before 7 am DH was hauling the boat to the gas station. We've not had it out yet this year. Since, he's been running the engine with "muffs" - some thingamagig you use to run the engine when it's not in water. Terrible racket - enough that I can hear it inside without my hearing aids. CHILL Dude!

Ron, I'm sorry. big hugs to you.

Grandkids are coming to swim again today and I have to run to the Publix for a few things because it seems we cannot go a single day without going to the store.

I bought CROCS yesterday!!! They're sparkly light pink and I bought some charms (Jibbitz) too! Ridiculous price but - the grands and great grands, even DH wear them (although his are knock offs, lol)

Lunch with BIL/SIL yesterday was wonderful. We ALL liked the food, I ordered beignets and a creme brulee donut with housemade whipped cream and strawberries surrounding it. They even said they would like to go back. The restaurant is in their town and hopefully we meet there again soon. We planned our fall camping trips and discussed the winter trip/return to Texas. Hopefully it won't ice in the island next year.

I hear the oven timer… off I go. Have a safe day, do something special just for yourself today!

Beautiful summer day today, 80 degrees and sunny at 2 PM.

My son and I drove to the Wilson's Creek Battlefield (a national park) and watched the cannon demonstration. Volunteers dressed in Civil War uniforms and demonstrated loading and firing blank cartridges. The Wire Road (the road along the telegraph line from Springfield to Oklahoma) is still there and is open to hiking and horseback riding. Reminds me that the Wire Road ran through the NW corner of my great-grandfather's farm and was still visible when I was a boy.

I stopped by the produce stand on the way home and bought Amish tomatoes and cantaloupe. The car smelled of cantaloupe all the way home, so I put it in the refrigerator instead of ripening it on the counter.

The mail brought health insurance EOBs, so the bills will be along in a few days. This provider (a radiologist) marks their first billing "final notice" and threatens collection. Nice people. 😡 I paid the first bill, not because I thought they were going to turn $5.90 over to collection, but just because.

The mail also brought a pamphlet on grief from Hospice. I'm receiving a series of mailings from them, based on the length of time elapsing since my wife's death, and I still hear from the chaplain every month or so. They have a grief support group, but I haven't used it. I guess I'm using you all and my son instead.

I think I'll go make a tomato sandwich. Have a great day!

Carl, Charles was on hospice a few days and the Chaplain contacted me every month or so. I never went to the meetings either. I'm not a meeting type person anymore.

Have you ever been to Battle Field Park in Prairie Grove, Ark.? A. Very pretty place. Every year they have a battle reenactment at Honey Springs Battle Field at Rentiesville, Okla but we never did go.

I.haven't had a cantaloupe this year so should order one. I really prefer getting them and watermelons from a farm truck or roadside stand. Those are better because they are ripened on the vine. You saying your car smelled like cantaloupe reminded me that we went to the Huckleberry Festival in Jay, Okla. years ago and bought some.huckleberries. Our car smelled like them, too. I love huckleberry pie and probably made one. There used to be a little restaurant on our way to Eureka Springs on a bluff that overlooked the White River. We always stopped there because they had the best huckleberry pie.

It's been cloudy here all day. Just checked and it's 83 at 4 p.m.. Can't beat that for August. Enjoy that been tomato sandwich!

CPAP…yes it is a new one…the messages come via email. It has an app available but since it starts and stops automatically with breathing I see no need to avail myself. I can press some options on the machine myself for info like usage and if the nose pillows were not leaking…lol. Yes, it makes sense that the goal is for Medicare.

Lorita…you need to venture out and find someone selling melons. They are much better and you car will enjoy the exercise. I have a grandson coming tomorrow to take my car for a spin on the highway. They say that is important.

Those earthquakes up off Russia are certainly something to be aware of.

    Ron…When is the cabin coming???

Carl…I only went to a grief support group once. I found it more helpful to just engage in an activity and found that I did best when I was involved with people who I did not know. They never asked how I was.

You're right, Judith.I have lots of clothes I need to donate so might load them up Tuesday and take them to the Methodist Mission and see if a truck is around. There wasn't one last time I was in town.

What is wrong with.people? Just heard on the news that a dozen head of cattle were missing from the Osage Nation Ranch. A few days later they found eleven cows tied up and dead. They died from having no water or feed.Who would tie up a cow and leave them. Just think.how they suffered in 100+ heat with no water.. Probably stole them, tied them up to.come back and get them and never did. They will be caught and prosecuted. D*** people.

I'm back. We just spent the last week in San Francisco, visiting family and friends. My optometrist is in SF too, I've been seeing her since the '90s, so I'll keep that up until they retire. I also got my hair cut and colored. It's now a softer shade of lavender - I really like it. She cut it a little shorter than I'm used to, so it looks like a short little bob.

We went in person to Death Guild on Monday night. I was so happy to be there, and it was nice to see everyone. Here's a pic (see? not scary, just a dance club):

    Death Guild 2025.jpg

The stage is to the right, the bar is to the left where that guy is standing. It was still a little early which is why it's not crowded.

We left to come home Thursday evening, and got back yesterday. It was a nice drive, sunny all the way, hot, but not oppressively hot. We were able to have lunch yesterday at our favorite rest area (I can't even believe I typed that - a favorite rest area), and watched the Klamath river for awhile.

    Yreka rest stop 2025.jpg

Today is a catch up day. 🙂

I've never been to Prairie Grove, but I've been to battlefields in Pea Ridge, AR and some others. Wilson's Creek has a reenactment every year and I know a couple of men who participated, but I've never attended. Some man I don't know built a Southern Colonial style house just outside town, appointed himself a colonel, and formed a reenactment unit. I saw them marching along the road a couple of times. I never wanted to play soldier in that way. Marching around in August in a wool uniform and lugging a 10-pound musket just didn't sound like my idea of a good time.

We toured the battlefield at Vicksburg, MS many years ago and that was interesting. They had raised the wreck of an ironclad riverboat and were rebuilding it. It had struck a floating mine during the war and sank. The paddlewheel was in the middle of the boat so they could build iron plates around it and protect the wooden wheel from gunfire.

A tour guide at the Nashville, TN battlefield told us that 20% of the men who fought in the Civil War died in the Civil War, half from disease and exposure from living outdoors and eating substandard food, and half from enemy action. The Civil War was fought with medieval tactics and modern weapons, and the carnage was horrific.

"It is good that war is Hell, else we would become too fond of it."

Actually we left SF Thursday before the 60,000 (probably more) people who were expected for the Dead and Company concert arrived. They were arriving as we were leaving - easy to spot them, lots of 70+ guys in tie-dye t-shirts. I guess Dead and Company are the remaining members of the Grateful Dead. I was never a fan, and my s.o. and one of his friends are always appalled that I can't name any of their songs. I know the one about "driving my train, high on cocaine, Casey Jones better watch your speed" and "living on reds, vitamin C and cocaine …. if you have a warrant I guess you're coming in". That's it, that's my Grateful Dead knowledge. 😄
