Really good to see your long post, Mint. Sorry about your tomato.crop this yest. Is that tomato really black? Have never seen one. Tomatoes haven't done well here either this year except for the cherry variety.

It's c!oudy here this afternoon. Talked with Mike on his way to check on a horse and he said it wss 95 on his truck. Watched the KC football game and it was 90 in KC.

Did quite a lot of paperwork today. Really made my back hurt so couldn't be a secretary again for sure. I remember doing depreciation reports without a calculator that took a long time. Didn't seem to.bother me then.

Is your nephew still living with you?

I have some.big tree limbs down and hesitate to mention it to Darwin. A while back one was down and.nothing would do.him.but to.cut it up. I worry about him, too, but can't do anything except tell him to.be careful so he can care for his wife, and to.be available to help when needed.

There is a man about three miles away that can do almost anything and he has done several things for me but no tree work. I think Bryon and his cousin can take care of the limbs. He also plans to paint my porches and the porch ceilings. Just been too hot this summer.

Better stop and take down the trash. Seems like I'm doing that every three days. He runs too early to do it in the morning. Take care.

Hi again, took down the trastoh, then decided to check on the barn door. The bottom was pushed out from cows laying next to the wall and pushimg dirt out. I dug the dirt out then looked up and the track it rolls on is bent.

Dragged a short bunk feeder out and put it where the girls can't lay against the wall and opened the stall door.. We had work done on the barn several years ago and they fixed everythimg except in the stall. Called Gary and he will fix it but he is building a deck this week. I think with the feeder where I put it things shouldn't get worse. Also need him to repair the stall door. He works fast, does good work and doesn't charge a whole lot. He keeps busy all the time.

There are double doors at each end of the hallway..They're about 12 ft. High and eight feet wide and are on rollers. We close the North doors in the winter. I do remember one winter we also closed one of the South doors to keep out the snow. Amazing how comfortable it is in the closed barn with all the.girls inside. Their body heat keeps it pretty warm and they're out of the wind. I have been out there several times when it was like that bottle feeding babies.

I'm tired so will say good night. See you all tomorrow.

    good morning

Lorita I would call the tomatoes a dark red green color. My nephew still live with me. He had his CDL permit now. He has had contact with the school so now we have to wait on disability to do their thing so he can get started. I pray this goes well for him.

Good morning. We've been blessed with another lovely day— sunny, breezy with a projected high of 80F. We may have some rain in the next couple of days which I suppose with could use.

Eve— That's a lovely view you have. My DH is still OK, but handling the house stuff was always something that fell to me. Before he retired, he traveled quite a bit, and I would often complete some DIY project like replacing the mailbox, painting a room, making new slipcovers or curtains. Even on bigger projects like kitchen/bath remodeling, he is happy to let me pick the finishes. So long as he has a library, he's happy as a clam.

This is a stark contrast to growing up with my dad who was compelled to have the deciding vote in any project. TBF, he had a good eye and did DIY a lot of it, but it frustrated mom. One of the earliest inklings I had of his cognitive shift was when he decided to deviate from the kitchen plan in a house he was having built. He wanted a wall to avoid being open concept which meant no island which meant placing the range directly next to the dishwasher which is all kinds of wrong. I pointed this out, his builder pointed this out, but he did it to anyway. He hated how it looked and later blamed the builder.

Carl— IMO, the fashions of the 70's were kind of fugly. In his dementia, dad mentally spent a lot of time in the era and used to ask mom what she did with certain outfits of his from the era. One of the weirdest was a double-knit sport coat that resembled a red and black brocade the exactly matched the walls of the Italian restaurant where my sister's wedding reception was. I mean, it was like he came in camouflage.

My mom has a couple of housekeeping books that were her mom's and her mom's old Scottish housekeepers. They're full of all manner of aspects of running a home. My favorite chapter was the one on home remedies— the instructions for curing a wart borders on witchcraft. It even includes burying something on the full moon.

When mom was a kid in the early 1940s, my grandfather was overseeing a construction project in Bath, ME. The family would stay in a very rustic cottage on the coast each summer with outhouses, well water, a woodburning stove and laundry done in a copper washtub. FTR, during the rest of the year they lived in a lovely Victorian in a lovely Boston suburb with all of the modern conveniences including a built-in pink dishwasher by the time I was born. Her kids all thought this was grand, but I can't imagine she enjoyed what was basically camping with most of her 9 kids.

Beth— A few of my neighbors go all-in on Halloween. The corner house with the feral little boys have had enamel pumpkin spikes on the lawn since mid-August. The flying witch and tombstones went in over the weekend and I'm sure there's more to come. My bestie really goes to town. She had some landscaping removed so she could expand her family of skeletons and fenced in cemetery she does. On the actual night, she sits outside and has a wheel that dictates what treats the kids get— some get double or their choice and the "losers" get a package of ramen. Last year she ran out of ramen because most of the "choice" kids picked that over a candy bar. Weird.

I hear you on the iPad check-ins. The worst offender in my extensive orbit of medical offices is the hand surgeon. Seriously people? That was right up there with the time the respiratory company delivered mom's new bi-pap and said, "you can set it up on your phone using the app". Do they not see the 87-year-old lady who is taking delivery of this device?

Mint— I'm sorry your thrift store shopping and tomatoes were a bust. NYT's Wirecutter had an interview with Jimmy Fallon (of late night fame) about his poor tomato crop. It was pretty funny— basically he spent $200 and many hours to grown 2 small tomatoes.

I rarely get lucky at thrift stores. But mom always finds something she has to have. Once she turned up with a silk Burberry scarf that had been "thrown in" along with a raincoat she bought for $35.

I wondered about the timeline for using different kinds of masks. Thanks for sharing that. I generally don't mask except around my immune-deficient bestie, in the ED waiting area or around mom if I've been around sick people.

Lorita— I hope the animals let you get a full night's sleep.

    ________________________________

I'm taking mom to the grocery store "for a few things"— last time she said that it was $300. I've not seen the report she was supposed to get for participating in the memory center study. It's not in her inbox, so I wonder if it will be snail-mailed instead. The interviewer said it would be one or the other in 2-3 weeks. Tomorrow is 3 weeks.

You animal lovers: have you read about Snowman, the $80 champion? Very, very good book! Here's a bit about it: "Harry de Leyer first saw the horse he would name Snowman on a truck bound for the slaughterhouse. The recent Dutch immigrant recognized the spark in the eye of the beaten-up nag and bought him for eighty dollars. On Harry's modest farm on Long Island, he ultimately taught Snowman how to fly. Here is the dramatic and inspiring rise to stardom of an unlikely duo. One show at a time, against extraordinary odds and some of the most expensive thoroughbreds alive, the pair climbed to the very top of the sport of show jumping. Their story captured the heart of Cold War-era America-a story of unstoppable hope, inconceivable dreams, and the chance to have it all. They were the longest of all longshots-and their win was the stuff of legend."

Also very good are the Bob the cat books by James Bowen. There are 3 books in the series, plus some children's edition books. "When James Bowen found an injured, ginger street cat curled up in the hallway of his sheltered accommodation, he had no idea just how much his life was about to change. James was living hand to mouth on the streets of London and the last thing he needed was a pet. Yet James couldn't resist helping the strikingly intelligent tom cat, whom he quickly christened Bob. He slowly nursed Bob back to health and then sent the cat on his way, imagining he would never see him again. But Bob had other ideas. Soon the two were inseparable and their diverse, comic and occasionally dangerous adventures would transform both their lives, slowly healing the scars of each other's troubled pasts. A Street Cat Named Bob is a moving and uplifting story that will touch the heart of anyone who reads it."

And regarding animals, yesterday Ron and I were sitting on a bench at Bear Lake in Rocky, and a chipmunk jumped up beside me. I surmised that humans had been feeding him (illegal but it happens). Also, ELK!!!

Oh, gosh, double knits. I had forgotten those things. I had a double knit leisure suit with a wide white belt, and many other ugly things. Kathy made me a shirt and her a halter top out of a fabric that resembled portrait wallpaper. I never had a Superfly hat or platform shoes, so I wasn't completely terrible.

The nurse is doing BP checks at the senior center this morning, so I'm heading that way. TTYL

Morning, Beth, the elk are beautiful. What a wonderful life they have. I see a baby getting a snack. I watched the girls come out of the barn yesterday with their little ones. They got out of the corral, then stopped for babies to nurse. They gave them about ten minutes, then moved on to graze but babies weren't finished so they walked behind still nursing, or trying.

Everyone, except the cats, had scrambled eggs for breakfast. I don't eat many eggs so they get old before I use them. I check to make sure they are ok, then scramble them for the GPS - they love them! Took some time this morning and tried to get paperwork straightened up. Everything tends to get put aside thinking I'll look at them.later so gets stacked up.

I loved double knit in the seventies. Such pretty patterns and uber easy to sew. No wrinkles and laundered nicely. . Charles had a couple of double knit leisure suits I liked and I would not be surprised if those and some of my dresses are in boxes in the storage building.

Mint, I have seen pictures of Heirloom tomatoes that look like that. Good luck to your nephew, hope all works out for him.

Thanks, HB, I had a really good nights sleep and evidently the cats and GPs did, too. Supposed to be in mid 90s today so I think I will stay inside. Guess I should open the heater box and look at it. Hope all of you are well today. Take care.

Need to finish my tea while it's hot, or I could have iced tea. That what I did when I worked - hot tea early and iced tea later.

I got mom to the library where she renewed her card, shopped the used book sale and took out a large print mystery which she, of course, left in my car. She spent a mere $87 this week mostly on excellent breads and gourmet prepared meals.

The painter showed up early; I should have an estimate by the end of the week. He seemed very pleasant.

Carl— I hope the BP check is good. Mom was able to go off her BP meds a few months after dad passed. I've heard that same story from others I know.

Beth, I absolutely love the picture you posted of the elk. Thanks for posting it. Football Came on early tonight - Buccaneers and Texans. Have to like the Buccaneers because of Baker Mayfield.

Did some cleaning in the bedroom today. Amazing how you find little things that need cleaning, like the top of the AC, vases, artificial flowers, etc. I've said before and will say it again -Housekeeping is not my forte. Much rather be doing something outside. My sister was just the opposite.

I'll watch the game until 8, then Rachel and Lawrence. Sandy, just can't help it. Gotta know what's going on. Hope you're well today...Been hot here today so I have stayed inside. My neighbor said he wasn't going to town. I think he overdid the last few days. One of his daughters always comes to see them on Tuesdays and another one visits Wednesday nights. So glad they do that.

Now that was strange - it kicked me out and took me back to.posts in June to a couple of Shirley's posts telling me to take it easier and find better, easier ways to do things. Hope you are well, Shirley and enjoy taking care of the goats. Let us hear from you.

I'll stop and watch the game . Buccaneers are ahead 14 to 10! Good night

Good evening. Finally taking a few minutes to catch up, or rather try to catch up on everyone!

HB I believe it was you that ask if DH looked at a small screen. No, he does not. If he's on the computer, he's on a big screen computer. He does use his tablet, its the big one and he has a stand he puts the tablet on to look at the internet on. The 'tech neck' is a good name, only this is much more pronounced. His right arm isn't functioning properly either. He had a cervical fusion 24 yrs ago, I think this has to do with that. Or something along those lines. I just don't want surgery, but he (we) can't go on like this. We'll listen to the doctor tomorrow. If you here a loud explosion in TX midafternoon, its us being told nothing is wrong!

I've enjoyed all of the pictures. I read yesterday that Trail Ridge Road, was closed due to snow / ice. Seems early to me. Be safe in those conditions.

My best friends of 30+ years has had horses in her life. I like and appreciate them from a far. They just scare me for some reason. She is two streets from me and has 3 acres - so that's perfect. She's not ridden for quite awhile, but loves her horses. I've walked beside her and a horse who had colic all night several times. After her last 'pasture ornament' rode off into the distance she now has two ponies. She saw them on a flier and off we went to get them. Gin & Tonic are quite the pair of goofballs. I don't mind them, but when they get frisky and certainly and zoom around the pasture.

    Iris how are you feeling?

Everyone else, I'll check on you tomorrow. I'd love to hop into the hot tub, but I think I'll opt for a quick shower and my jammies. I'm tuckered out. Let's be safe everyone.

Sandy, the advertisement with the very long-haired dog running through the fields is for Farmer's Dog. Alexa says it probably is a Komondor. Sorry I didn't know what the ad was for.

I let Stormy out before dark and forgot about it. Sheena was in the bedroom with me and I thought he was in the LR. I kept hearing someone whine and thought it wss Sheena, heard something at the bedroom window and Lilly went over to the window twice.. I even told Stormy to come in with us. I finally remembered he was outside, went to the front door and he wss coming up the steps from.being at the window. He knew which window to come to - there are six on this side of the house. He is smarter than i. Sleep well.

I was going to post some yesterday buy couldn’t get bold to work. Lorita, I did see that commercial today and I think the dog is an Afghan. With all the horse pictures, I wanted to share our rescues.

    IMG_0298.jpeg IMG_0299.jpeg

The first picture is of Chaos and Apollo. Apollo was a show horse but suffered a back injury and was sent to slaughter. Chaos was deemed to be untrainable so he was sent to slaughter. He’s the on still in rehab after his hoof surgery. The second picture is Zeus, he was an Amish plow horse. He has severe arthritis and is given gabapentin and 30 Tylenol twice a day for his pain. We also have two rescue mules. It was a stipulation that none of them could be ridden. So this is a retirement home for horses, mules and me. I wonder if my son and DIL knew I what they were getting into when they were planning move. I don’t think so.

Eve - Pretty horses. I've only been riding one time when I was barely out of my teens. It was a little scary … horses are so large ….

Beth - those are great pics of you and your horses! And oh my gosh! The elk!

Interesting about the doctor check-in process. My doctor's office has only just changed their procedures - only within the last month, so it's still all new to us.

Carl - Yay for platforms!!! I loved the Superfly soundtrack, btw. 😉

Mint - I'm with you on masks - I tend to do what has been working for me (I've also never had covid - knock on wood). I always keep a couple of masks with me as well, and one in the car, just in case. I usually wear vogmasks (comfortable and effective). After what you said about South Korea, I checked to see where vogmasks are made, and it turns out they're made in South Korea also. For plane trips (thankfully, rare), I wear N95s.

HB - I'm with you on the "fashions" of the '70s. Fugly is the word for them. It was a difficult decade for clothes shopping. I have olive skin so burnt orange, avocado green, and all of those autumn colors never worked for me. They'd make me look like death warmed over. Plus, I was never a hippie, so that decade was just so wrong. I was so thankful for the 1980s and electric blue, royal purple, and black.

Lorita - I'm with you - hot tea in the morning, iced tea in the afternoon.

Sandy - You've got beautiful horses as well!

Gym was good today - boxing and strength training. I must have exceeded expectations for strength training because when we got to boxing, my trainer put on goth music. He's definitely my pal (even if he makes me work hard).

The last week or so I've spend most of my time (today too) pretty much sitting in a cave, writing. I've got a couple of big writing projects I'm working on, with one about ready to come to fruition. I'm pretty happy about that. So, I'm preparing for that, so I created a bluesky account to help promote it. Bluesky is essentially like Twitter, but without the downsides of Twitter. I'm kind of resistant to most social media, but I'm doing it anyway.

Now I'm getting ready to relax and listen to Death Guild and chat with whoever is there.

    good morning

looks like we’re gonna have another day

I got a surprise yesterday when all the blue they called me and wanted to know if they could finish putting my windows in. I was in the process of getting ready to do several other things, but I said sure come right on over. So all that’s left is one sash that was broken when they took it out of its wrapping. He said that still has not came in. It was on their list though cause I didn’t mention it to him he mentioned it to me.

when I was spraying wet and forget it on the north end of my house I noted that the covering on the outside for the bathroom fan is deteriorating and needs replaced. I have no handyman. Deep you think a company that I would call to replace my siding or roof if they would do a small job like that? I guess I’ll just have to call and ask them. Maybe I can ask around at church and they will know someone who would do that. I would like to get it done before the of winter start.

I have invited a friend over for lunch. She is a picky eater so that makes it challenging. I am not picky at all. But I’m making meatloaf. She just doesn’t want green pepper in it. I’m cool with that.

hope each one has a peaceful day

Morning, Sandy, the horses are beautiful. They are so fortunate to have such a good home. Is Chaos getting along with everyone now? Maybe when you have time and can get out and around you could post some pictures of the beautiful area where you live. Hope you're feeling good today.

Mint,so glad you were able to get your windows put in before winter. They should make a big difference in your heating and cooling bills. Just heard it's only 100 days until Christmas. Time is going fast.

Kind of cloudy here this morning but supposed to be in the low nineties. I am so ready for fall weather Watching Denim & Co.- not going to order anything, just like to watch. Will be back later. Time for hot tea.

Eagle, hope your DH can be helped without surgery.

We drove up Trail Ridge Road on Friday. They had shut off the water up there as they were preparing for a freeze. Still, I was surprised they got snow, 6" or more, a day or two or three later. Cool temps but no snow in the lower elevations. Just saw a flock of wild turkeys outside our condo this a.m.

    Sandy, your horses are beautiful!

GG, I'm intrigued by your writing project. Are you writing a book?

Good afternoon, rockers. I am starting to feel like a person who lives in the basement. Mostly this is because i am trying to get a handle on donating DH’s stuff. He had a lot. Much of it predates meeting me — all the camping gear, for instance. DH did three trips with Outward Bound as a young man, and he loved hiking and backpacking. He also skied, though most of that went away in our last move. And he biked. He also did a lot of HAZMAT training. It was a pretty interesting life, and much of the stuff he left behind is a challenge. Yesterday, for the first time, I unwrapped the two spears he bought from a Maasai warrior on a trip to Kenya in the ‘70s or ‘80s. How he got those home on an airplane i can’t imagine, but those were different tines. No surprise, they are pretty rusty. Slowly but surely, i am making progress.

I wanted to check back in because it seems like a lot is going on.

Eve and Sandy, your horses are beautiful. How great that they are so close to you every day!

Eaglemom, i sure hope the doctors can help your DH’s neck. That sounds truly painful.

Beth, your pictures of Estes Park and the elk are fantastic. What a great time of year to visit!

GG, can’t wait to hear more about your writing projects. Your workouts still make me tired, though.

Mint, i hope that meatloaf turned out well. That sounds really good in our weather; i think i am finally ready to turn the oven on again.

Lorita, I can’t believe how hot it still is for you. Hope you get some of our really pleasant early fall weather soon. Count those GPs before you go to sleep!

    Good afternoon—

Eagle— I hope your DH's appointment went well and that there's an easier approach to addressing his neck issues.

I watch myself for tech neck; I find I'm most prone to pitching my chin forward when at my laptop or iPad propped up vs on my phone.

Lorita— 100 days until Christmas? Yikes.

Sandy— It sounds like you're running assisted living for horses. They're beautiful.

Gothic G— Yes. The dreaded earthtones. They didn't suit me either. And don't get me started on the dearth of natural fibers. Even my sister's wedding gown was made of a silky jersey knit. It's funny, my niece saw pictures of me in my yearbook and was hoping I had "those cool clothes" in storage somewhere. She wanted them for herself.

Mint— I have the best luck getting tradesmen via tradesmen. When I needed a handyman to fix a switch to my garbage disposal, I asked the refrigerator installer who did it as a side hustle. I got my painter from the appliance repair person and the handyman from the painter.

Beth— I like my Wild Turkeys neat. JK.

I remember the first time we camped with scouts near turkeys. The 2 new scoutmasters who were city boys admitted to being terrified by them until DH told them what it was.
    ____________________________________________________________________

I met my bestie for an outdoor lunch earlier. I think she wanted me to talk her out of spending $8000 on a quilting sewing machine. As a good friend, I would never dream of doing such a thing.

I picked up some books for her twin grandbabies at the library's book sale fundraiser and when I got them out of the car, I found the 2 books mom checked out of the library yesterday. Ugh.

Still no report from her study participation.

Most, if not all, of the good actors are either gone or very old. It does make people of our age feel older, Judith.

Wild turkeys, Beth, were they gobbling? One morning on my way to work I saw a few out in a pasture. They're really pretty. When I was growing up we watched Lawrence Well every Saturday night. I think there are still some reruns only.

Really hot outside with very little breeze. Beginning tomorrow night we may get some rain and a little cooler weather for a while. The Tulsa Fair begins in a few days and that usually means rain and cool weather. Hope that holds true this year.

Been cleaning house some today and my back hurts and I'm pooped. I need a housekeeper. A couple of my friends years ago had someone cone in weekly and it was funny to me that they would clean some the night before. Guess I would , too, though. Back after while.

Here's where we have been staying. We were downtown today and a bull elk was resting in the park. No other elk were around. He was a beauty! We go home tomorrow.

What a lovely place to stay, or live! The view must be really good with those big windows.. That is one big moose. Is that area where many people are? He seems happy laying there. Do you think he was okay?

I saw the news today about Robert Redford - for some reason I'm shocked. He's just so timeless.

Carl - Three Days of the Condor is one of the scariest movies I've ever seen. He was great in it though.

HB - I had no "cool clothes" when I was in high school. 😄 I was your basic sweater and jeans kind of girl. No real fashion sense to speak of. I did better in college.

I had no idea quilting sewing machines were so expensive!

tigersmom - Your husband sounds like he was a really cool guy.

Two spears he bought from a Maasai warrior? I wonder too how he got those home. It was a different time, to be sure, but I'm pretty sure even back then the airlines weren't going to allow spears in the cabin.

My workouts make me tired too!! My trainer told me I'm getting so much stronger, so I guess I'm making progress.

Beth - Those elk!! I was kind of stunned to see those photos! Then once I got over seeing them, my thought was that in the second photo he looks a little miffed at being awakened from his nap.

I have a few projects going …. the one that's almost ready is a blog detailing what happened with Peggy, her Alzheimer's journey, and how I handled all the stuff that came up. I've got it all written, and the first batch of posts have been edited (I hired an editor). It's about 75,000 words total, and each post is about a thousand words (so about 75 posts). Some of my posts include resources that I've used over the years, like The 36 Hour Day, etc. I've got the wordpress site done (which was a pile of work), and the bluesky account is ready, so I'm just about ready to start posting. My hope is that it's useful for anyone who discovers it and wants to know what Alzheimer's/FTD looks like in one person. It's my way of giving back to the community who helped me out over the last several years.

I had a great time at Death Guild last night - definitely some over the top songs last night. Did you know there are goth/industrial versions of They're Coming to Take Me Away and I'm a Little Teapot (Of Tea and Darkness)? The video for Teapot is very blinky, just so you know. Who says goths have no sense of humor?! 😄
