Just need to talk to my friends (210)

I started this months new thread, 210, but entitled it 110. I tried to delete or change it but didn't work. Maybe this will. The other one is saved somewhere. So sorry for the confusion.

On the new thread I commented about a co-worker who wss driving in town, felt something on her foot and discovered it was a snake. She stopped and got out immediately. Guess it got in through a hole in the floorboard. Also mentioned the snake family that was in my house a couple of years ago. I saw the mom in the bathroom, got my grabber and.got her out. Came back into the house and saw papa in the bathroom. Used my grabber to get him out but he was so heavy it broke the grabber. Then found the three babies and removed them.
My cats found all of them first and warned me. To this day, when they go into the bathroom, they look for snakes, in the corners and under the dresser and chair. Guess I have three watch cats.

Oh my, GG, I can't wait to watch "Life After People." Thanks for telling us about it. For others who are interested, I googled "where to watch Life After People" and it came up with many options. One option is the History channel online - it came up and there was a "watch now" symbol beside it, I clicked there and all of the episodes that have been released came up. GG, I read what you linked from Wikipedia and it really piqued my interest. Thank you so much! I copied this info from 209 because I think others who haven't had a chance to read this post to that prior thread might be interested.

Mint, I'm so happy that your mother is doing ok and has adjusted to MC. I know that makes you feel much better.
Vegetable growing hasn't been that good here either this year. I guess because of the months of rain we had, then the super hot weather. One good thing is because of the rains hay production has been great and our grass is still green which is unusual for the end of August.
A big limb fell from a big Hackberry last night-no idea why but the girls were all around it eating the green leaves this morning -breakfast buffet for them. That tree is huge and beautiful and is over 75 years o!d. I remember it when I was little. Darwin has lost lots of big trees the last couple of years. Guess because of climate change.
We made it through August!!

Please disregard the other thread entitled like this one. .I thought I had used 110 instead of 210 so started this one. Can't seem to delete the other. It's way down the list, so don't post on it. September is not beginning well for me.

GG and Beth - thank you for mentioning Life After People, and for including info about viewing episodes on the History Channel. I’m intrigued and have already started watching it. Luckily I can view it on my phone. I’ll probably link the phone to my old not smart tv for better viewing.
Mint - I’m envious of your “ok” tomatoes, mine have been dismal this year. Thankfully melons and cukes are producing.
Washer/dryer delivery tomorrow so need to make sure the delivery folks have clear access.Take care all

Lorita, At our old house we had 3 large hackberry trees. I don't know their ages, because they were there when we moved in. One day, one of them just fell over. Totally uprooted - no wind, no storm…it was rotted inside although outwardly it showed no signs of that. Then, in 2020 we had a huge windstorm and the other two broke severely. One or both of them were also rotted inside!

For some, like me, this hasn't been the best gardening year. In Iowa we had a summer with a lot of very hot days, plus a lot of rain. My cucumber plant didn't have many cucumbers and then it got powdery mildew. My second cucumber plant is just beginning to flower. Tomatoes - there were a lot of them on the vines but they took forever to ripen. Nonetheless, we've had all the tomatoes we have wanted and plenty to share. We are in Iowa.

Eve and Beth - I hope you guys like Life After People (I think you will). I didn't mention that each episode features experts who are on point with the episode. I particularly liked Steven S. Ross, who knows everything about concrete and corrosion and he'll jovially tell you about it. I especially like that he authored a book titled Construction Disasters: Design Failures, Causes and Prevention. Each episode also features a short segment on an abandoned city, like Hashima Island in Japan, that was abandoned in 1974.
Lorita - I don't mind snakes, but I'd certainly mind them in the bathroom! I've never encountered water moccasins, or copperheads, but rattlesnakes are common where I spent my high school years. We'd run into them occasionally, but mostly only if we were out hiking. You learn to keep an eye out.
Beth - Every year is a bad gardening year for me. I can kill anything! I feel terrible about it, but I just don't have a green thumb. I loved seeing your photos of your previous garden, it really was to die for.
September first, and the weather has turned: it's barely 70 degrees here and it's completely overcast. Nothing like a preview of things to come. 😄
Today is an organizing day. I'm going to get all of the loose family photos together in one place. I should have done this years ago, but today is the day.

GG…GATHERING FAMILY PHOTOS…THANKS FOR THE PUSH

Beth. I'm going to go look at the tree after while and see what might have happened.. We didn't have wind so no idea. It looks like a big, Central limb just broke off. I think I mentioned Darwin is forever finding downed trees. He gets them all cleared away, then finds more. Mike has also mentioned that he sees lots of dead or dying trees. I had the.big elm in the yard taken out because I was afraid it would blow down and crush the west end of the house. We have a.great big black walnut st the southwest corner that kind of worries me.. All of the trees around the house are.big. Daddy used to keep them topped to prevent them falling on the house. Sorry you lost thośe trees. They add value to a.home.
Years ago when a neighbor moved in, the power company clear cut trees along our south fence to.put in electric for him. They had to compensate us for the trees. The trees along the.north road were across our fence on the right of way , so nothing but they finally hired a contractor to clean them up.
Maybe if that limb is loose I.can hook a tow rope to it and pull it away from the tree and against a fence. I don't want Darwin to think he needs to take care of it, like he did before. If not, Bryon can do it later. I just hate to lose trees. Two in our meadow have died, not huge trees but they did provide shade for the girls. This correction thing on the tablet is funny —it changed tow rope to toe rope.

I'm glad you started the new thread Lorita. And a new washer & dryer tomorrow. Exciting!
Snakes, no thank you. I'll find me, horrible knees and all, standing on the roof screaming! Nope, I just don't like how they move. It wigs me out.
Iris I'm so sorry you tested positive. Hopefully its a mild case and you won't feel too poorly. I'm not seeing any masks unless we're in the physicians office. With this awful continuing bronchitis DH has going on, I'm masking up when out in public. I have a board meeting next week - 24 of us, a smallish room, crammed in like sardines' - I've already said I'll attend virtually. I was told I needed to be there in person, and I responded with its either I'm absent or virtual, you decide.
Alas the coughing continues. I think he's finally hit his limit with this coughing nonsense. Its gone on so long that he now is worn out and frankly doesn't feel good in general. He is coughing less, but its a much deeper cough. A small about of hot water and honey is the best for the cough.
I wanted to accomplish several things today, and that hasn't happened. I have read through several documents and about put myself to sleep! But it had to be done. Think I'll fire up the grill for dinner, that might perk DH up.
Let's everyone be careful out there.

Eagle, did you get some rain? Hope so. What kind of washer and dryer are you getting? I bet you are excited. Do you think, maybe, your husband might have pneumonia? Hope it gets better soon.
Carl, or anyone, please explain the difference between a mail-in ballot and an absentee ballot for me. I had an absentee ballot last election and had to jump through hoops to get it ready to mail. So many places to witness. After all of that I was notified it couldn't be counted because I failed to add a date in one place. I just heard some States mail a ballot to all registered voters. Oklahoma doesn't. . Our polling place wss three miles away but it wss moved to 15 miles away. Mail in Would be easier.

Lorita, PLEASE DO NOT try to pull the tree limb down with a rope!!!!
0 -
I'll have to look at it, JeriLynn. If it's loose from the tree I might be able to use the tow rope- it's pretty long so might not be too close to the PU. Most likely I can't do it but won't ask Darwin to do it. He's pretty wobbly, as he says, anyway. Today he went up to finish cutting some limbs, had a flat on his Mule. came home and fixed it, then went back and finished. Also told me he found another tree down on a fence.

Lorita, ditto what JeriLynn said!
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but Covid has not gone away. I spent two hours in Urgent Care to get documentation of Covid for the insurance. The workers there said they have seen an uptick in Covid cases in the past two weeks. This agrees with what I read online. The new Covid variant may begin with a headache and not seem too bad for a few days.
Eagle, an unsuspecting person can SHED VIRUS for a few days before becoming symptomatic. You are correct to avoid contact in crowds. LA County Public Health recommends masking for ten days if you are exposed to Covid and live with an immunocompromised person.
Although I can resume activites once I test negative, I have to avoid contact with high risk people for ten days. My roommate on the trip has a high risk brother, and I thought about joining the trip late if I tested negative, but I believe it's too risky.
I have been diligent with handwashing. But on the cruise, I sat at a table with a woman who was coughing. I asked her about her cough and she said she had allergies. Is it possible she had Covid? IDK.
Right now I do feel better. I no longer cough continously, I now have coughing spells. But in between the spells I feel okay, just tired. Probably because coughing so much uses up a lot of energy, also I had fever.
I posted to warn everyone not to let your guard down about Covid. Get the good tight-fitting N95 masks and wear them. Wash hands with soap and water for twenty seconds frequently. Avoid crowds. Avoid people who are coughing. Basically, avoid everyone, especially if you have a big event coming up.

PS: I started with a headache and thought I might be dehydrated because the temps had been over 95 degrees and I was perspiring a lot and I felt hot. In retrospect I think this was the Covid fever. I did not think I might have Covid until the heavy coughing began. Even then, I was not anticipating Covid. Yet here it is and here I am.

GG, I had 4 (now 3) organizing projects to work on. Most of it involves looking through old papers and photos and determining their disposition. The other one involves going through the 14,000 + photos on my phone, and deleting out some! Best of luck with your project!
0 -
Thanks, Iris and JeriLynn, I probably won't bother the limb. Thanks for caring.
Iris, Glad you are feeling better. I still wear a mask when I'm around anyone and use hand sanitizer. Where did you get your covid test? The ones I have are expired. I think Covid will always be with us, especially the way the CDC is going. Take it very easy and rest. Are you taking medicine?

Beth, 14,000 photos on your phone! Good luck deleting organizing. I keep getting messages from Google that my photos are piling up and that I need to pay for more space. But I don't want you pay for more space. I will have to figure out what to do.
More observations about my recent Covid experience:
Lorita, I realize that I need to be more diligent. I will mask around people and keep the hand sanitizer flowing.
Lorita, I purchased a home Covid test from CVS which also includes tests for influenza A and B. Two tests come in a box. I believe it cost about $14.00. I will test again in five or six days.
Talk about the film Life After People brings to mind the 2020s, when the entire world was shut down, no people outside, not even allowed to surf on the ocean. That period was enough apocalypse for me. I don't need to see a movie.
The world is becoming more digitalised and everything is to be done on our smartphones. The Urgent Care Center that I visited was new, but they had some of my medical records, thanks to electronic medical records. ALL the registration is done on the smartphone. I had to ask the receptionist to help me upload my ID and my insurance cards.
Then I got a text from my local health department, I suppose the UCC sent them notice that I was Covid-positive. I didn't respond because they asked for identifying information which I refused to supply because I did not initiate the text. Too much texting!
From about 2013 until Covid-time I took computer classes in order to be able to keep up. I haven't had a class in five years, I need to start up again. I feel like I'm falling behind! If you have an older relative who is not smartphone-literate, help them out, because they will be completely lost in this modern world.
I'm trying to hold it together. I'm more stressed out about the digitalizing than I am about Covid. Calgon, take me away! (That's an old commercial for you young'uns.)

Beth - 14,000 photos is a lot of photos! I feel like a lightweight — I only have 4,500. I really need to delete more than a few of those. I've been organizing the physical photos, man, way too many of those too. And my problem was I had them spread out among several boxes. Now they're all in one place.
Iris - I'm glad you're feeling okay right now.
Life After People isn't morbid or scary. It's more about processes - how long does it take for concrete to break down (reinforced or not - turns out it matters)? How damaging is even a trickle of water over a period of a hundred years? How long does a fruitcake really last? It sounds kind of boring, but actually, it's really interesting.
Digitalization of info in and of itself doesn't bother me, but, how the data is secured does bother me. In many cases, security is bad. And that's how we get data breaches. I never give out personal info unless whoever is asking for it has made a good case for it. "Our policy" doesn't cut it with me.
We're listening to Death Guild right now - so far, so good.

When I was in college, the big effort was to teach computers to talk to one another. Once that was accomplished, the big effort has been to secure computers so they DON'T talk to one another. Billions have been made by hackers and by the security services.
I have a second laptop that I'm not using. I have thought of selling it, but I don't know how to delete the information that is on it from online shopping, like credit card numbers. I guess I'll just keep it around and use it occasionally to keep it current, and as a backup for when this one quits working. It wouldn't bring much money anyway.

You're up late, Carl. I'm still up, but it's Monday night so I'm listening to Death Guild so it almost doesn't count. It's been good, so it's keeping me up. I know that some of you will be waking up before I even get to sleep. 😄

GG - so right and good morning, we are still having 90 degrees plus every day so early morning is some of the best time of day to get things going around here.
0 -
Ha! I'm still here - DG ends in about 15 minutes and it looks like I'm going to make it to the end. I'll be paying for this tomorrow.
0 -
GG - Sleep well - do you have black out curtains doesn't the daylight make it hard to sleep in?
0 -
I don't have black out curtains, but you know, once I'm asleep you could have a party in the next room and I wouldn't hear you.
0 -
Well my grandma would have said sleeping like that you are doing some kind of "right" living.

And now I'm out. Have a good morning Goodlife2025!

Lorita, I hope I didn't sound like I was trying to "boss you". It's frustrating to not to do the things we "used to do" without a thought. I have those issues too and I get so mad at myself when I want to do something NOW and realize I cannot. DH came home one day to find me standing on the kitchen countertop to clean the upper cabinets and all the doo-dads I have on display up there. He had a fit. I usually do the upper cabinets twice a year. I let the Fall cleaning go and I haven't figured out what I will do in the Spring.
Iris, I'm glad you are feeling better and hope you continue to improve. I'm with you on the tech stuff. I call my Grandkids for help. And they, lovingly, laugh at me. On our last trip I was able to follow their instructions for utilizing the cellphone "Hotspot" for TV reception in the RV. I got lots of celebratory texts from them. 😂
Eagle, hope your DH's cough is better. It sounds exhausting.
Beth, our garden gave up its last yield. We took everything across the road to the neighbor. My flowers are still trying though. We have several hummingbirds and lots of bees still so will leave everything alone until the birds fly South for the winter.
We have our annual RV trek to Hiawassee, GA later this month to the American Made Music Festival. It's 3 evenings of Blue Grass, Gospel and Country music with various entertainers. The Festival hosts are Dailey & Vincent. I had never heard of them until DH came into my life. It's been a fun trip for us the last 3 years. The campground we use backs up to the river and is so peaceful. We always tow the little KIA so that in the daytime, we drive the backroads and look at the countryside. It's just beautiful over there. We'll celebrate 3 years !! of marriage while we're there!
Well, I've got my to-do list made so I guess it's about time for me to get started on that. Hope you each have a good day.
