Recommendations on companion services

My mom has PCA, a form of Alzheimer's. She is only 59 but we have already seen a severe cognitive decline and she is unable to live on her own. She is in assisted living right now. They do offer activities throughout the day, but usually the ones in the afternoon are either too difficult for my mom to participate in or she is just uninterested in them.

She is still very mobile and active and wants to go for hikes and walks and do other various activities of that nature. We are trying to find someone who can come spend time with her at least once a week for a few hours and take her out to do some of these things. We would prefer someone who is familiar with dementia, but mainly we want someone who can be active with her.

My mom in currently in Van Nuys, CA. Does anyone have any recommendations on companies that provide services like this or what the best route is to try to find her a companion?

    you can call the Alzheimer’s toll free number. They might be able to help. I would move your Mom to MC asap. She needs 24/7 care and a locked secure facility. My husband had PCA. He progressed very quickly. So sorry. The toll free Alzheimer’s number is 800-272-3900.

    Does the ALF have any recs? I found an agency through my dad’s first MC facility and they have been wonderful.

    Your best bet might be either word-of-mouth or placing an ad with Care.com.

    The aide you hire will need to be able to transport your mom if there is nowhere walkable from the facility. Sometimes agencies don't allow their staff to drive clients. I've heard of families providing a car/insurance for the aide to use but that adds up quickly.
