Morning baby is.okay. Looked out just before dark and mom was down by the pond. I went down and baby was laying by the water. I kept.getting closer and he jumped up and ran to mom. It worried me because we have lost calves in the pond. One cow had her calf by the pond years ago and the baby fell in. Guess I shouldn't worry -'ya think? That'll be the day that I don't worry.
My.left.lower quadrant is.hurting some and I'm afraid it may be a flare again.
Ron and Carl, how are you fellas today? Much better,.I hope. Decided I'm going to sit in the sun a while every day to get my Vitamin D instead of taking pills..
HB, how is your new knee?

Good morning. I've been back a few days but I'm in a lot of pain from all the walking and hiking and I've been coughing.
I see I'm not the only one who is sick. Ron and Carl, I hope the virtual soup is helping you both heal. It's good you both can get some sunshine and rest.
Carl, California has its own border crossing and a fellow traveler's black walnuts were confiscated at the inspection. So if you plan on driving to California, don't bring any of your black walnuts.
Ron, what a relief about your stress tests! In a little while you should be able to be more mobile.
Judith, I'm glad there were no more sightings of Mickey.
JeriLynn, will your granddaughter stay with you indefinitely?
HB, you're getting around well! Is the PT helping? Your mom seems to be chronically hypoxic.
Your family name is Stanton? There is a small city in Orange County named Stanton. I think it's only a few blocks long.
People asked about my trip. The weather was perfect, in the 70s during the day and cooler at night. We were able to see all the stars and constellations at night when we got to the desert.
There were 18 in our group, half from southern California and half from northern California, and two came from Texas.
The gray whales make the longest migration of mammals, about 12000 miles between Alaska and Baja California. They calve the babies in lagoons that have the salinity to provide the buoyancy that they need. About 500 whales came to the lagoon that we visited; there are three main lagoons.

Sounds like a great trip, Iris. It also sounds like you need a vacation to rest up after your vacation. I know I would if I'd been with you.
I'm feeling better. My eyes are clearer and I'm coughing less and breathing better. I'm still sleeping a lot but my dreams are less disturbing.
It's 83 and sunny outside. I'm going to Braum's to buy bananas, oranges, and whole grain bread to supplement the prepared meals I microwave. TTYL

We traveled about 30 minutes to get to the middle of the lagoon. The whales come up to the boat, and we can reach out and stroke them. Zetta, the whale skin was very smooth. Unfortunately they become covered in barnacles which I imagine are prickly. Here are some photos.
A good view of the blowhole and barnacles
They swim under the boat
These were the boats we were on.
There were pods of dolphins but I didn't get pictures of the dolphins, they swam too quickly.

I have heard that you can't take any kind of produce into California. I've always visited California by plane and never tried to take anything more than a change of clothing and personal care items, so that never affected me. I am of the school that thinks I've packed too much if I can't lift it with one hand.

Just a quicky — Because I go from WA state to California and back all the time, I have a chart that I use to determine what produce I can and can't bring into either of the states. It's pretty comprehensive. Here it is. There's actually quite a lot that you can transport, and surprising things that you can't.

I took videos but I can't post the videos.
We visited a Salt mine, which mines hundreds of tons of salt. This salt comes to the US and Canada for salting roads in winter, and for swimming pools. Only two per cent is used as table salt.
Salt is harvested in ponds
Each truck carries 400 tons of salt. Mining goes on 18 hours a day.
The salt is washed. Any metal debris is removed with strong magnets.
A hill of salt!

Aqua-farming of blue-fin tuna within the rings
Bufadora geyser at Ensenada
We were serenaded.
Goodlife, this picture of the statue of the last Aztec king is for you. If you enlarge the picture and look closely, you can see bees have made a hive within the statue. I took a video but I can't post it.
Baja California was very safe and clean. There were very few tourists, besides us there seemed to be only fishermen and dirt bike riders.
The bus ride down was long, but I dont mind sitting in a bus. I came prepared with a hardback book. But there was not much time for reading because I was fascinated by the different scenery. The bus had a toilet and we made rest stops. This road trip is for the adventurous because apparently there is no airport or airfield where the whales are in Guerro Negro.
Zetta, you asked about the Vicmar shipwreck. It happened in 2016. The captain kept the engine running until all the fuel was consumed, in order to avoid polluting the ocean. Now, the adventurous hike down the steep cliff to take photos of the shipwreck.

Wonderful pictures, Iris. I have really enjoyed "our" trip. Thanks so much for taking the time to post and caption all the pictures for us. How great to be that close to a whale. How smart they are to calve in a place safe for their little ones.

Iris. Im glad your home safe and sound. Now you need to get rested up so you can recover from your trip. It's always nice to get home. Maybe Judith will send you some of her amazing soup. Thank you so much for all the pictures, i really enjoyed your trip. With 18 people in the travel group, do you see some of the same people when traveling? Those whales look so big, I would be afraid they would dump the boat over, when going under it. Those barnacles look ugly, I guess they are used to it. Your pictures are so educational, I had no idea about ths salt.
I wonder what the painting on the ancient rock, was and how they did it. Those guys that were serenading you, looked like they were flirting with you ladies. Can people go down and get on the shipwreck boat? And check it out? Thanks again 🤩
BBL, my battery is running out. Hugs Zetta

HB - the allergies have already commenced. 🙂
I hope PT went well for you today.
Lorita - I hope your aches and pains are better tonight.
I'm getting vitamin D the old fashioned way while I'm here in California, but as soon as I cross the border into Oregon, it'll be pills for me.
Iris - I'm so glad you had a wonderful trip. Your photos are amazing. I've never been that close to a whale. That's a 'wow'. I love all of your photos about the processing of salt. Really interesting. Your night sky photo is fantastic as well.
As for me - today was family day. I saw a bunch of my cousins and then had dinner with even more cousins. It was good to see them all. We had lunch with friends and that was nice too.
Tomorrow we're having breakfast with D & V before we take off for home. We saw them earlier in the week, so I'm we get to see them again.
It'll be nice to get home, but it's been great seeing everyone. And the sun, of course. Can't beat 80 degree weather.

Judith, thanks for the virtual chicken soup. For some strange reason, I seem to get sick after my trips.
Have you all heard of DOMS, delayed onset muscle soreness? This is extensive muscle pain that begins after heavy exertion. We did quite a lot of walking and hiking, which I wasn't prepared for. We had to hike up a cliff to see the rock paintings. Our tour guide commissioned some teenaged girls to help us older ladies climb up and then down the steep trail. I needed the help, because I fell coming down the trail, but our guide caught me and saved me from injury. I'm so glad I climbed, but I have been in great pain since I returned home. Also, after returning home, I have picked up a virus, because I am sniffling and coughing and I have a sore throat. Fortunately, my Covid test was negative, but I have to retest in 48 hours.
Zetta, you're really interested in the shipwreck. There is a trail to get down to the shipwreck but only strong hikers are advised to attempt it. I don't think it would be wise to climb onto the shipwreck because all the wood is probably rotted from the sea water.
Half of the travelers I already knew from other trips. The northern California and the Texas people were relatives and friends of my roommate, and so they were new to our group. But we all quickly became friends and buddies.
GG, it was nice you could connect with so many cousins. Were you at a family reunion?
We're having a heat wave in SoCal, with temps in the 90s and even 100s in some places, bresking temperature records. It should be cooler next week.

Should.have done that , Jane, but didn't. Welcome to our porch.

Good afternoon. Sunny and warmish on my end of the porch. I did my PT homework and trimmed some of my dwarf split leaf maple which is encroaching on the driveway. The previous owner, aka "dad", didn't anticipate mature size when selecting and planting. Everything is either too close to the house or too close to the space it was given.
I hope all who are under the weather rebound soon and all have a pleasant evening.

Sunny and warm here, too. My iris and peonies are sprouted but are curling from the heat. I'll need to water them and my new trees this evening after the sun drops. No rain is forecast until Friday evening, a week away, and who knows if we'll even see rain then? It's 85 going on 90, which is near a record for March 21. Feels more like summer than spring.
I feel pretty well, but I still tire easily. I hope to be OK by the time I finish the bottle of antibiotics. Hope all of you get well soon.
Tomorrow is DW's birthday and DS wanted to visit her grave, so we stopped there on our way back from lunch.
I may go buy some more khakis and polos this afternoon. I've been going around in sweats most of the winter, but it's getting too hot for that.

Ninety here supposed to be 93 which will be a record.
Birthdays of loved ones who are no longer with us are hard,Carl.. Charles' 94th birthday is on Easter this year.
Girls are standing in the pond for the first time this year so it is hot. I stayed out in the sun about 20 minutes before noon so got my Vit. D today. Need to work on taxes but don't feel like it so watching Grumpy Old Men instead.
Every time I get up for something Stormy follows me. He is lonesome without Sheena and is afraid I'm going to leave him. It's sad.

Good afternoon.
Thanks, Beth. I got a late start today. But I'm not coughing, no sore throat, only a little sniffling. I'm told there is a sore throat virus going around in my neck of the woods, so I think I cought it as soon as I returned home. I'm glad all of us sick ones are healing.
Lorita, I hope your diverticulitis clears up very soon.

Good afternoon Porch Friends.
Ron and Carl. Looks like the two of you are starting to feel better. Getting lots of rest and taking your meds, hopefully will make things better. I bet you guys miss meeting up at the senior. And all the ladies miss you guys. We all know sleep 😴 is good for you.
JeriLynn. The sunrise on the Tennessee River was beautiful. Im glad your enjoying your new 5th wheeler.
Eaglemom. I have to laught each time I hear about your flying umbrellas. Do you not have neighbors back yards close? When we were in Arizona, our umbrella flew in the next door backyard.
HB. Im just like your Mom, I hate making phone calls. I think my reason is after I retired i said no more phone calls. Your so good to and for your Mom, she is so blessed to have you. You be carefull driving with your baby knee. I laughed when you said your mom was on her way to get her hair done and she was heading to NJ, on her way to Brooklyn.
GG. If you remember being in Jenner, my grandparents owned the Rivers End Resort, that was the last place heading out of the small town of Jenner, right at the mouth of the Russian River. I spent a lot of years growing up in Jenner. I waited tables at the Resort in the summers. It's good you keep in shape for all those walks. You and I must go through the same fruit and agulature station going into to California. It's on I5. (I five)
Lorita. It's so nice that you and Darwin, are there for each other. Does he let you take him to the store when you offer? I know you do and will always worry about those babies, just take deep breaths sit and enjoy the sun. Im surprised the mama's have their baby's so close to the ponds.
It's been warming up on my end of the porch. It's been in the high 70s the past few days.
Take care all and have a good night. Hugs Zetta

Goodnight all. I've been sitting on the patio and just sitting. Its a beautiful evening, believe it or not, its 79 at 11:00 pm.
Hopefully everyone will wakeup tomorrow feeling more like themselves and all that ails each of us is gone.
Goodnight.

Iris, great picture with the statue. Thank you I have loved all your pictures from this trip. When I enlarged the pic I could see the bees buzzing around. I am sorta surprised they let the hive stay there as bees can get aggressive with too much activity (like tourists). I have only recently (last year) started participating in our local swarm line. While a great way to get a free hive; it can be kinda scary with the many places they decide to make home. This one looks especially difficult because there is no way to get the queen. She will be deep in that metal statue and it's not like a tree limb you could cut down.

Goodlife, I'm so sorry that I can't post the video because it is truly striking to see all those bees buzzing around. I imagine the bees have been there for some time, since there were so many.
Several years ago, I happened to look up and noticed a couple of bees near my neighbor's balcony. It turns out that the bees had a hive within the wall of her unit, and the bee guy said it had been there for at least seven years! We were all astounded, because we had never noticed any bees before. The bee guy took care of the bees, and we never had any return to that spot. I admire bee-keepers, you are all so brave!
