A white bison calf was born in Iowa recently. According to the National Park Service, white bison are very rare, with an estimated one in 1 million births being a white bison in the wild. In many Native American tribes, like the Lakota, Sioux, and Dakota, the birth of a white bison calf is considered sacred and seen as a sign of hope and good times ahead.

Beth, the bison babies are so cute. I had heard that a while buffalo is considered to be sacred but didn't know they were so rare. Are there herds of buffalo in Iowa? I saw a show about buffalo , I think was made by the man who makes those good shows,that showed.how the buffalo was almost exterminated. Wish I had not seen it. Zane Gray's Thundering Herd was almost as bad. I'm so glad there are thriving herds now

Someone mentioned that David Attenborough is 100 years old. I absolutely love the shows he has made. Earlier this year our local PBS station was raising funds and I contributed and wss sent his book about Oceans. Haven't read it but will.

Ron, by any chance do you or anyone in your family have the recipe for tea cakes? I should have paid more attention when grandma was making them. She didn't have a written recipe I have tried and tried to find the recipe to no avail. I loved her tea cakes. Wish I had a few now.

Stormy's hair is so pretty now but Mike says I should have it cut short to help prevent hot spots. Not sure how he will do with that.

GG, a UTV is a utilIty vehicle usually with space for two or four but I saw one on a trailer in town Thursday that had three rows of seats. They are used for many things such as checking cows out in pastures or just driving around on your farm, or on country roads. They have a roof and windshield and can have doors. They also have a bed to carry things. The Spike I looked at had a small bed barely big enough for a.bale of hay. It had separate seats but I need a bench seat- for Stormy.

Iris, no idea what to do for ticks except wearing a collar (people don't but I have considered it) or spraying your pants legs. Living in the country where there is tall grass and weeds contribute to them. My Pyrenees don't seem to have a problem with them because of their thick, double coats but short haired dogs really have problems Guess I do, too..

Judith, did you have any storm damage yesterday?

Lorita, I will try to find the recipe next week. It’s in my storage unit with a lot of other stuff. My mom with the help of my sister put most of the family recipe in a book. This is where the majority of recipes I shared with my porch friends came from.

Tea Cakes

2 sticks oleo, softened

1 1/2 C sugar

2 eggs

3 C flour

1 t vanilla

3 T milk w/1 t soda

Mix well, spoon on greased cookie sheet. Bake 350 8-10 minutes. Makes 10-12 dozen small cookies.

Thanks, Ron, I would appreciate it. I have looked everywhere for that recipe. I know it's not here because grandma just knew how to make them. Don't put yourself out -I want you to be careful. When grandma made a cake, she mixed it up, then baked a spoonful or two. From the result she would know if she needed to add baking powder or something else. That baked spoonful or two I would eat with what she left in the mixing bowl for me.

Thank you, Sweetwater I will try that. I know grandma used lard instead of butter because that is what we used for cooking even though we made our own butter, also made the lard. Have you used this recipe? I think grandma rolled out the dough but not sure. Drop cookies are much easier. Wish I could remember.

HB, thanks for the info about the origin of afternoon tea. When I was working, my nurse and I would have "tea time" in the afternoon when the others had their coffee break, but we just had hot tea, no sandwiches or cookies.

Your DH has so many books. I used to envy people who had a dedicated room for books. But now I don't. I don't seem to have time to read the new ones, let alone reread the old ones.

But there is one book that I do want to reread. It is a biography of Benjamin Franklin and his many contributions to the founding of our nation. There was so much more involved than what we were taught in school.

Lorita and Carl, a woman from Alabama introduced me to tea cakes. What she gave me was like a mini pound cake, not a cookie. I had never heard that term before. Are they eaten for a specific occasion, like a birthday party? Or just any time?

Lorita, do you wear socks when you go out? My grandmother wore thick nylon stockings. But that was 60 years ago. Do you remember wearing stockings with round garters above the knee? I'm thinking thick socks or stockings with a tight weave would prevent ticks from attaching.

Iris, my grandma's tea cakes were like cookies but a little different texture and.not really flat but just a bit thicker, Eaten anytime.

I do wear socks, all year long, not because my feet are cold but with my neuromas socks seem to make my feet feel better. Sometimes I can't sleep in them though. I think ticks would just crawl up the socks onto pants or skin.

When I went for my interview at the VA I wore hose with round garters. I had my physical that day and the Assistant Chief of Nursing Service was there and cautioned. me about wearing garters. That was before panty hose so I switched to them when they became available.

Thought I would make the pumpkin spice muffins and take some to Darwin but got distracted feeding cats. I think I need new muffin pans even though I use liners. These look like they have been dragged behind a car (this is what David Venable on QVC says. I have one that bakes the muffins in the microwave, six at a time. A while back I took one of the pans, a cake mix and liners to them but doubt they have usrd it. Only takes under three minutes

Lorita, there are no bison herds roaming in Iowa. These are at the Neal Smith Wildlife Refuge. The bison herd and elk herd have an enclosure of 1000 acres.

Lorita, I have used this recipe and the tea cakes were yummy. I got the recipe from a cousin in Alabama. My mother would roll her tea cake dough into balls and place them on a cookie sheet.

Hi Beth, we also have a white bunny rabbit that someone left on our property. Easter bunny we are sure. DW is enthralled. I would love to catch it but am told they are very hard to get with a live trap. She has been in our yard and gardens for the past three weeks. DW feeds her "snacks" but we can only get within about 2 feet before she takes off. Any suggestions on how to catch a rabbit?

Goodlife and Beth, I found two rabbits at my condo, at different times. They were both tame and let me pick them up, so I knew they had been pets. I put up notices that I had found a rabbit but no one claimed them. I kept the first rabbit, Baby Cakes, because he got along with my cats. Rabbits can be medically fragile and unfortunately this one got sick and died. The second rabbit I placed with Rabbit Rescue, and he was adopted by a home with other rabbits. I think I named him Tippee.

Rabbits have to eat Timothy hay, not just green vegetables and carrots. I was ignorant and didn't feed Baby Cakes the correct diet, and I think that's why he got sick and died. Rabbits can be litter trained, like a cat, but shouldn't use clumping litter, that will kill them. Rabbits chew everything, so they should be confined to some degree in a home. But they are so cute, and very personable and they crave attention. And they are a lot of work, more work than cats.

Sweetwater, your tea cake recipe sounds delicious.

HB - I didn't know that's how high teas started. I'll share with my bestie, although chances are high she knows this.

I won't lie - four walls of books would have been heaven to me in my younger days - but now, at my age, four walls of books is too many books.

That dino book looks great. The bone wars were startling (at least to me). Paleontologists blowing up each other's camps, and the dinosaur bones along with them (!!!).

When I looked at the amazon page, The Last Days of the Dinosaurs by Riley Black came up as a book frequently bought with the one you listed. I've read that one, and it's pretty engaging. Kind of like Life After People - one day before the asteroid hits, one minute after it hits, one hour after it hits, etc.

Beth - I never knew how cute baby bison are!

How are your exercise classes going?

Lorita - I've never seen a tick in real life. I've only seen photos.

Iris - I didn't know that about rabbits - that they're medically fragile.

Today was a cleaning day for me, as Saturdays usually are.

I also finished reading Feed by Mira Grant - zombies, virologists, and bloggers. It was kind of fun, and not gory. It focused mostly on journalism, political intrigue, and virology (which I kind of like reading about).

I don't think I've ever had tea cakes, but they sound good. I may try my hand at making them (without lard though).

I already "did" Mother's Day with my mom and DS is working, so beyond dinner I can take it easy.

Those with bunny infestations should call around and see if there's a rabbit rescue in your area who can trap and foster the animals. Sometimes the SPCA will help.

Good morning.

We've had several indoor rabbits. They were litter box trained and frankly thought they were dogs! I let them hop around the house but when I left & at night they went in their cages. The dogs could have cared less about the rabbits! I loved going to get the mail & there sitting at the glass screen door would be 2 Shih Tzu's, 1 Lhasa, and 1 rabbit all lined up waiting for me to come back!!

Beautiful this morning with storms this afternoon. Nothing planned so I'm not sure what the day will hold.

I have never had a white rabbit but when I was little daddy would often bring a baby rabbit home. He would.be plowing and find a nest. I had a doll House and woud.turn it upside down and try to keep the little rabbit in it when I wasn't playing with it. I had no idea so many people have tame rabbits and surely didn't know they would use a litter box. Occasional I see a little rabbit in the yard or pasture. We don't see nearly as many cottontails as we used to and rarely see a jack rabbit.

I marvel at the things we learn from each other on this thread. It is amazing how diverse, and alike, we are.

Sweetwater i might try your tea cakes if i get time. Thank you. Believe i made them one time but think the recipe was a bit more complicated.
Lorita we have had a lot of rain. i do not have all my beds weeded yet. If and when i accomplish that i will plant a few things. I have bought no plants. Will not buy any unless ready to plant them. Am trying not to put any additional stress on my life.

Mint, I ordered a blackeyed Susan plant but not sure it will make it. Atwoods had lots of plants outside but only have the bathtub to plant in. We took out the.hoLLy across the front of the house and I would like to plant flowers there.but I don't think.I'm up to levelling the ground. I can't have plants on the porch or steps because either Rusty or a rabbit eats them. .i.hope you feel better and can enjoy planting like you used to.
