Hi everyone! I hope you and all of our loved ones are doing well. I (27 F) am one of three care givers for my mama (62 F). I have just recently felt as if I have a handle on her Alzheimer's, but am wondering if I'm missing anything that I can set up for her/us to support us some more as she continues to progress. So far I have obtained durable POA and healthcare proxy, she is getting a new PET scan to determine her eligibility for a new treatment, been shopping around for companion care/adult daycare options, got her signed on to the NYS Medicare Savings Program (as she is just above the income cap for Medicaid due to her SSDI), OTC from Medicare, about to start physical therapy, and I'm pretty sure that's it. Did I overlook anything, or are we in a good place right now logistically? Thank you for any advice.

    Whew! That's a lot… I think you're doing great!

The only thing I can think of is respite for you… The companion care or adult daycare may help with that, but please make sure when she is at the 'Community Center' (we called the daycare that), or has a companion, that you also get out and about and do something special for you.

There is so much to do in the beginning, it overwhelming. It sounds like you have been busy. My mom also did a living will. It listed various healthcare issues and stated if she would want treatment. Things like treatment for cancer, kidney dialysis, and DNR. I’m glad this has been done and I feel like it might take some of the pressure and guilt off me if I’m faced with a difficult decision down the road. We also did a prearranged and prepaid funeral. If she is living with you I would at least look into mc/nursing home. Ask some questions, get some idea of cost, and possibly get her on a waiting list. Is there any scenario where she might qualify for Medicaid? Have you discussed this with the lawyer? It’s always good to have a plan B. Dementia can get pretty ugly and if it becomes too much for you it would be good to have a backup plan. You might also look into what is available for in home care and possibly day programs. It’s my understanding that social security has special forms they require to be filled out vs just accepting the DPOA. If she has any investment accounts or life insurance policies, you might want to check that they will accept the DPOA (they also sometimes require a special form). If her doctor has a patient portal option I would set that up. It’s a good way to communicate with the doctor.
