Welcome to July!! One of my least favorite months because it is so hot. You all be careful In the heat.

Not really sure.how long it will.be before I get the test results. One place I read said 72 hours and another said up to 14 days. My doctor did say it might be that I'm.not far enough along in the incubation period to get correct results. Waiting is.not easy.

Just wanted to get this started - will write more later. Hope everyone is well this morning. Carrots today!! Thanks for the information, Iris, I will wash them well.

Regarding vegetable and fruit washing, my son and family will actually wash theirs with soap (dish soap or hand soap). I just wash mine with water. If it's something like grapes, I just use a strainer basket and water and my hands. For harder fruits and vegetables, I have two of these Norwex fruit and vegetable microfiber scrub cloths: https://www.norwex.com/p/veggie-fruit-scrub-cloth?gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=23711664457&gbraid=0AAAAACx1r-nG2L5uE1wKG1jBdA5KgNqC-&gclid=Cj0KCQjw9ZLSBhCcARIsAEhGKgO0FJ_vYD5zf12IkET4DgOl6V5h7MoI-_H4os_J9FAXGgWPGRYqMmIaAvepEALw_wcB Sometimes I just use an old wash cloth that I've cut up and repurposed as a rag but I know the Norwex cloth is better. When I am going to cut into something with a peel, like a melon or lemon, I always wash the outside because it's germy and if I cut into it the knife is transferring germs right into the part of the fruit we eat. I know I sound like a germaphobe, but I'm not. Just trying to be reasonable in the kitchen.

I don't love baby carrots (store bought kind). They often are very wet and sometimes even kind of slimy. I think the full size carrots that I peel and cut myself are much "cleaner." Speaking of clean in regard to produce, I recently read there are lawsuits against Driscoll's who are major producers/packers of berries. The suit is in respect to their use of pesticide on strawberries. I decided then and there that I won't buy strawberries anymore unless they are organic.

This will be our 4th very very hot day. Hoping and praying the heat breaks soon and that we get some rain.

Anyone watching the "Surviving Earth" and "The Americas Fun Facts" narrated by Tom Hanks? I'm late to the party - haven't watched but have bookmarked it to watch. I believe the final episodes are tomorrow night. I'm sure some (many) will be watching soccer. When the USA plays their next game they are closing off a major downtown street and having a watch party. In 90 degree heat, shoulder to shoulder, drinking beers - what could go wrong???

Have a pleasant day, everyone! Beth

HB, I hope your mom's appointments went well and provided answers and treatments that will help her to feel better. I'm sorry for her and also for you and said a prayer for you both.

Eagle, sorry about your hot tub. I hope that you can find a new one or get this one fixed. I know you enjoy using it.

Lorita, hoping that your test results come back soon and are good. I'm guessing that if you haven't had any symptoms, and if there are no cases reported in your state, you are probably ok. It's good to check though, better safe than sorry.

Nanny, it sounds like you are as busy as a bee! If "life" ever gets in the way of the things you need and want to do, or causes exhaustion, I hope you'll consider pulling back a bit. There surely are others who can help with the elderly relatives, etc…..but they don't need to, because you do it. And they will let you because it's easier for them. Trust me. I've been there.

Ron, how has the move in gone? Are you in a one bedroom or studio? Is there plenty of room for your things?

Carl, enjoy your 3rd and 4th. It sounds like it will be enjoyable yet relaxing.

Mint, we miss hearing from you. Hope you are well and that life is good.

Iris, do you have any more trips coming up? I always like virtual traveling with you!

GG, I took a look at your blog again today. I read it all when you first posted but looks like you have added a lot. Good job telling Peggy's story and how it affected you and her friends. She sounds like a very special person who was much loved and very competent in her work. It's unfortunate that she couldn't have lived longer. Early onset Alzheimer's is so particularly cruel. My mom had dementia and my MIL also had it, following a stroke. But they both lived in their own homes until their mid-late 80's so they did have good lives until the last couple of years.

Judith, congratulations on your little great grandson! Give him some snuggles from the front porch.

To everyone else on the porch, hello and write when you can! I love hearing from all of you.

    Beth

Good morning. It's sunny and headed to 97F today. I had swapped out my hair appointment and will be headed into the city around 1:30. I'm bringing water, bringing a hat and will stay in the shade where possible. Fingers crossed the heat doesn't impact rail service. Oops, there's a derailment, again, but so far, no impact on my trainline except passing the station where Monday's derailment is still be cleaned up.

Beth— Mom's appointment was unrelated to heart/lung/PC but they did check her BP which was unusually low. It tends to run low at times but this time I made sure she'd eaten and was well hydrated. Since early April it's been as low as 74/46 and as high as 128/82; there's a trend where it's higher with appointments with male doctors even when a female tech or nurse takes it. She tends to run lower when I check it.

I reached out to cardiologist's office and discussed with his RN. She wants me to get BPs going through the weekend and reach out on Monday unless the pulmo says he believes this sudden decline to be related to CHF/pulmonary hypertension rather than COPD in which case I call the office tomorrow afternoon. Pulmo starts vacation Friday and cardiologist isn't back until Monday. I'm supposed to see my own PCP Monday.

Lorita— Fingers crossed for a quickly delivered negative result. I hope the holiday doesn't impact the processing of the test.

I hope all have a pleasant day.

    Good morning.

Everyone is so busy! I feel wiped out. At least the weather is mild .

Beth, I didn't know about the charges against Driscoll. I eat a lot of Driscoll strawberries.

I peel oranges with my fingers, but I do rinse the peel.

My next trip will be to Mt Rushmore in a couple of weeks.

July is here. Half the year is over. I feel as though I haven't accomplished much.

Iris, I think you have accomplished quite a lot in terms of your travels! Mount Rushmore will be great! We were there many years ago, when our kids were young. We have also seen the Badlands, Wall Drug (Wall, SD), the Corn Palace (Mitchell, SD) and the Terry Redlin museum (Watertown, SD).

It's going to be 95 today with heat index of 104_ one degree below heat alert.. Sunday will be 98 and up from there. I just had a good? Cry. Was watching The Waltons and there wss a funeral for a.boy killed in WWII. It showed the flag draped coffin and it just got to me. Brought back memories of Charles' MIlitary funeral and the flag. I have it in one of those triangular frames with a shadow box I made with his metals and other things. Strange how these things sometimes affects a person at times.

I would have loved to have seen Mount Rushmore but we never got there. I saw some things about it on tv yesterday.. Did not know they had excavated areas below it where they had planned to pur things like The Constitution, Declaration of Independence and other important things for safe.keeping. Did.not know that.

Got a letter from a friend in Missoula, MT a couple of days ago. She is 86 and her husband is 88. She had hip replacement and it isn't healing correctly. Guess we should be thankful if we can get out of bed in the morning and move around.

Just read.it isn't necessary to wash baby carrots before eating but I will. Beth, I Iike your idea of using a washcloth to scrub them.

I'm anxious to get test results and pray it is negative. May have to take another since my doctor said the incubation period may.not be far enough along. I have a nice bruise from the first one.

I think the girls are enjoying the opened barn. As long as the wind.blows it is pretty cool in there and the darkness helps with fly control. We always kept back rubbers across gates saturated with insecticide mixed in diesel. Mike doesn't do that...If.he wanted I would be happy to do that. We have an overhead gas tank almost full of diesel which we used in the tractor we no longer have.

Gotta go- sorry this was so long. Mint please post so we can know you are okay. We miss your posts.

Lorita - that seems like such a long time to get results. Do you know how far along in the incubation period you have to be before results show up?

I'm like you - thankful that I can get out of bed and move around. I know I'm active, probably more so than many, but I have to do a lot more pre-exercise stretches that I didn't used to have to do in my younger days. I definitely have the fear of god in me that if I don't keep moving, I won't be able to move.

Beth - I avoid Driscoll's like the plague for the reasons that you state. I don't like strawberries, and I'm allergic to some of the other berries, but I do like raspberries. We get those locally.

Thank you for your kind words about the blog, it's been a long, hard project. But it's my way of making sense of everything, and also to give back, especially to this community. I always got such good advice here, and I'm grateful to everyone here who has helped me over the years. Peggy really was a good soul.

HB - I hope all goes well today - no mishaps with trains, and that the heat is bearable.

Iris - I'm in the "you've had a lot of accomplishments this year" camp. You've been on so many interesting trips - both locally and internationally. And now, Mt Rushmore!

I went to the gym today - windshield wipers (those leg raises while you're holding 70 lbs over your head), squats, dead lifts, and boxing/kickboxing. The new move for today: a spinning crescent kick. I have not yet mastered this. More stretching required.

Now I'm off to finish adulting quota for the day. 🙂

GG, incubation period ranges from one to eight weeks but for most people symptoms develop in two to three weeks after exposure. It will be three weeks for me tomorrow. Feeling okay now with no detectable symptoms.. Hope this continues.

I think I will watch the soccer match tonight-USA.vs Bosnia.

My roommate told me that ABC tv is supposed to show about Mt Rushmore all day on Saturday July 4th. I'm looking forward to seeing what they have to show.

Every January 1st I make a To Do list for the year. Aside from the trips, I have not accomplished much. Since today was July 1st, I have five months left to accomplish my To Do list. I don't count December because I spend the entire month enjoying the holidays, and nothing else gets done. Plus I will be visiting my brother in NYC.

This is why I marvel at how busy you all are and by how much you all get done, even in one day. There are some days when I don't even get dressed.

Anyway, it's late now. Good night.

Waiting for grocery delivery. Ordered a small watermelon so. hope it's a good.one. I have gotten two cantaloupes this year and they were.delicious but are out of.stock now. I prefer to.get melons from a farmer's truck but it is too early for melons here.

Already 80 here so will be a.hot one without much wind.

I've been getting good watermelons - 3 of them so far. They are not locally grown as of yet. The sweet corn sellers have begun selling in parking lots. We like eating it fresh and I also freeze some (which is MUCH tastier than frozen corn from the store). There will be many sellers from now until late August or early September. We'll get some Sunday after church. We have a favorite seller; doesn't everybody? There is nothing like Iowa sweet corn!

Good morning. The heat is on. We're headed for 101F; triple digits aren't common around these parts.

Beth— Your approach to washing fruit is similar to mine. I typically lather up melons before cutting. DH gave me the side-eye about it until he really thought about the reality of what might be lurking on the peels. Mushrooms are the thing that gives me pause. I don't like to rinse them before using but don't have the patience to lightly dust them instead— not that that would make the safer to eat.

My local public radio station has had history programming on their early afternoon shows the last week or so. It's been interesting as I'm driving around.

Ubering the 1/2 mile from the salon to the train station, I passed 3 big watch parties. For the most part they felt enthusiastic and only somewhat chaotic. Philly only has one more game left which is kind of a shame— World Cup has brought a joy to the city I have felt since pre-COVID. I helped one man on the train find his way around— he was wearing one of those synthetic USA jerseys and the knit USA scarf in 98F heat. Crazy.

Iris— I am impressed by and envious of your travel. Italy and a safari in a single year is awesome. Funny, Mt. Rushmore was always on MIL's bucket list. She always traveled with gaggle of other teachers over the summer but never made it. I hope you enjoy it.

Lorita— I imagine you test could take a week or so depending on the kind of test (PCR or ELISA) and the lab. A commercial lab like Quest would probably be quicker than a Dept of Health one. I had a bunch of lab work done ahead of my knee surgery at a hospital affiliated with the biggest hospital network in Philadelphia— most of it was pretty basic stuff but some of the more obscure ones from my hematologist got sent to Texas and took over a week to show up and 2 weeks to be scanned into my chart. Silly me, I would have assumed the hospital's lab would do them.

Gothic G— I agree. The Driscoll's aren't worth the risk. They tend to look better than they taste. I'd rather a smaller berry with a more intense flavor from the local farm despite the expense ($8/pint this year) and the very short season.

Are windshield wipers similar to the dead bugs I do? I use a much lower weight and sometimes a bolster to help target the lower abs. I hope your adulting went well.

    ________________________________________________________________________

Fortunately, the trains were mostly sorted out by the time I needed to be in the city. I stopped by mom's to check her BP and drop off some grapes (DS decided they had too much sugar for his voodoo diet) for mom. I took a later train which would give me 25 minutes to get to the salon. Alas, once I was on the train they made an announcement, that they were awaiting a decision on whether they'd be allowed to proceed past the derailment or take everyone off at the terminus of the subway to continue into the city. FWIW, that would add at least 15 minutes to the trip. Just as we pulled into the station there the salon called to say they were also running late and come at 5pm. We got the all-clear and I walked into the salon with 3 minutes to spare. Niece also got stuck in traffic, so we got out late and only had an hour to catch each other up which is unfortunate. I got home just before 11 and am dragging this morning. LOL, I'm typically asleep around 10.

The office of mom's pulmonologist called, they had questions about the thoracentesis— where and when did it happen. I had to explain it being cancelled and told his admin where to find the notes regarding the procedure. I hope we get some clarity today. I suspect I'm seeing more heart disease than lung disease at this point; if that's the case we'll circle back to cardiology. I'm to call their office after if that's the case. Otherwise, I call on Monday with BPs I've collected over the last month.

    Good morning.

On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress passed a resolution saying that "these United States are, and of right ought to be, free and independent States."

This was the Lee Resolution. Twelve states signed on this date. On July 4, 1776, Thomas Jefferson's formal Declaration of Independence was signed.

@jfkoc The Jellycat bear looks perfect as a first bear. It looks soft and is the ideal size

DH spent way too much money on a Hamley's x Steiff Bear of the Year for DS when he was born and then on the next year's version because it has the same name as DS. They have "growlers" (amusing to me as growler is a rather vulgar UL slang term for female genitalia) and DS was afraid of them, so they remain MIB and unloved in my closet. I still have my tiny mohair bear and a ladybug; they're old enough for Medicare.

Iris— So true. I wonder how quickly the official celebration date was changed. It is said Jefferson asked if it was the 4th on his deathbed fifty years later. Adams survived him by 5 hours. According to newspaper articles of the day his last words were "Jefferson still lives". Monroe died exactly 5 years later.

Mom's appointment was a quick one. He's referring her to a subspecialist in pulmonary hypertension. By the grace of G-d, they have an appointment at the local satellite office Monday morning. This doc is only onsite once a month. Her BP was low today but not dangerously so. Her O2 wasn't stellar either.

i heard thunder a few times thid afternoon south of us but no rain. Sidney from the vet.clinic called to.tell me a woman brought in a 13 week old GP- Lab mix for the shot. She wanted to give it away. Got her phone and address and called. I got an AI thing or something asking my name and reason for call. Told him and he said.he would ask if she would accept the call.Guess not. Came back and asked if I wanted to add something. I asked for a return call but did not get one. Now that I. think of it I have a friend in Calif. Who has whatever this is. I may call again tomorrow. She lives 32 miles away.

    Sleep well. Good night.

I finally slept on my bed last night, when I got up this morning it was nice not to crawl and pull myself up by the doorknob. Now have a bed, recliner, loveseat recliner and tv still to be mounted. Once I get everything in place and my life stops throwing me curveballs I’ll take some pictures.

Yesterday I was brought 8 canisters and a backpack for when I’m up and exerting myself. Today I went to the dentist for a Sin adjustment on my new teeth. Since I was only a few minutes from the VA, I decided to have them check a rash that was looking bad on my legs. Now I’m on two antibiotics for cellulitis! 😟 seems like lately it’s always something!

HB, what is UL? How fortunate to get the once monthly appointment with the specialist for your mom!

Lorita, many voicemail systems now ask for your name. Asking for "why you are calling" is new to me, but I can see this expanding. It's like having a receptionist screen your calls. If you call back, you might say right away that you are very familiar with GPs so she'll know you're not a random person, and hopefully she will answer.

Ron, now that you are settled, you can devote more attention to your self-care. I hope the cellulitis resolves quickly! Your apartment sounds very nice.

@Iris— typo. UL was meant to be UK.

Ron— I'm glad you had the rash checked out. That could have gone south quickly over the holiday weekend.

Lorita— It sounds like this person has a digital assistant screening calls during the workday. A lot of folks with smaller service companies have similar set-ups instead of carrying 2 phones. Maybe you'll get a call today or over the weekend, maybe she's already found a new home or maybe she changed her mind— I bet he's adorable. Fingers crossed for you.

I just noticed that DS is almost out of his Sparkling Ice and is moving in on my seltzers. Grr. This means it's a Costco day for me. It's bound to be insane today— in the retail food biz, the 3rd of July is right up there with Christmas Eve eve. Maybe the heat will keep others away.

Good morning my busy porch friends.

It seems everyone has a lot going on. I will share that the 4th of July at Mt. Rushmore is fabulous. I can't imagine how special it will be today. They put on quite a breathtaking display with a history lesson (for lack of a better description) that you will never forget. I to ask a park Ranger why this isn't an advertised event - we just were there on vacation traveling through the Bad Lands - and he said they don't want the publicity. Word of mouth has this a huge event and that's all they can handle. I will say it was crowded, but everywhere is crowded on the 4th.

The hot tub saga is done. Out with the old and a new one will be delivered in two weeks. The company that was working on it just knew I'd go purchase a new tub from him. Boy was he wrong! I'm amazed at the technology changes in 12 years. I'm very excited to get the new one and feel the difference - my poor knees are excited also! When I mentioned getting in / out of the tub and my issues the manager said he had a solution. I can't describe it well, other than its a handle that swings while your getting in/out. The bonus was, he said if it didn't work he'd take it back.

I'm going to lead our class this morning, need to hop in the shower. Back later. Everyone be safe out there.

HB—UL meaning UK, okay, I thought it could have meant UP, for Upper Peninsula in Michigan. Antway, that's a funny slang word I never heard.

Temp is warming up here, into upper 70s. Many will be at the beach, but not me.

Do women still wear slips with skirts and dresses? I still Have slips but haven't worn a skirt or dress in 15 years. I do wear patio dresses at home in the summer - no slip. I never see them advertised on QVC, just long line panties.
