Father Angry & Unhappy in SNF
My father(86 yo), who from what I’ve read has recently entered Stage 6, he has been in a SNF since April. Until recently he has been fairly happy there and hasn’t complained much. I’m not sure most days he really understands where he is, often times he calls it his apartment or thinks he is at work. Other than the dementia he is physically in fairly good shape. There was an aide that ran the daily activities that he liked very much and I think contributed to his happiness there. Recently they moved her to another area and he’s been getting more and more agitated with the staff in the dining room. He has sworn at them and recently threw a drink at another resident. I have asked them to have psych evaluate him to see if an increase in his meds would be helpful. I’m not sure what to do. He’s been calling me more recently telling me I need to get him out of there. I don’t want to transfer him to another SNF because I do think that would further his decline and I do like the facility. Would love to hear feedback from those that have been in a similar situation.
I guess I’m just discouraged because he was doing so well, honestly to my surprise. I really thought this process would be much worse than it was. He adjusted fairly quickly and wasn’t asking about leaving but now is.

Do tell his doctor about the increased agitation. And it wouldn't hurt to check if something else may be going on, such as a UTI.

Yes, I agree. Rule out a UTI or other infection. Also, his acting out may be his only way to show there is something bothering him - especially because he was doing well. Maybe, keep a closer eye on things to see if there is anything you pick up on.
