My FIL's doctor got a new, really pretty nurse once. He remarked to FIL that all his male patients were having increased BPs and he wondered why. FIL told him "You got a new nurse." True story.

GG, cataract surgery is not that big a deal. It was a big deal in the 1950s, and a friend's mother chose to go blind rather than undergo it. Now, it's not painful and gives great results. I customarily wear glasses with a little correction post cataract removal, but I can read a newspaper and drive a car without them. Pretty good for age 79.

We had a brief thunderstorm yesterday afternoon, with lightning and hard rain for a few minutes, but it's nice today, 83 and mostly sunny. Hope you all have a great day!

Something weird.just happened. I called my bank to get my balance and a miniute later I got a message on my phone in some foreign language, like Arabic. Did not reply, of course. I.called my bank and reported it. Anything like that ever happen to any.of you? Can someone somehow.get into your phone calls? I'm think it's a sad state of affairs when you get suspicious of things but I realize we have to.

    Good afternoon.

Lorita, when I called my cousin in Brooklyn her voicemail message was in Spanish. I don't know how that happens.

We're expected to have a heat wave here in SoCal for the next few days.

For those of you dealing with ants, I had posted a flyer regarding snt snd using baits from when I visited the LA County Fair. If you want to see it again, it's on May 29th of Friends # 218. I did not want to bring it yo the you to avoid confusion.

I'm glad the young calves are enjoying frolicking in the field, Lorita.

Iris, I wish you could see the calves playing. They can run so fast with their tails up in the air.. Mike says when he's out checking cows and he sees the calves running and playing he pulls over and watches them. When the girls come.up to.go in the barn, the babies run run ahead of them to get in first. Fun to watch them. They like to swim across the pond but it scares me to see the babies swim. They stay close to mom and I hold my.breath until they reach the shore.

Did you all see where the Huskie ran a bear off when it got close to a six year old boy? The dad said he had wondered if the dog would protect them. He did!

Ron, I.hope your doctor figured out what to do to help your rash.

Going to watch MASH and bake a sweet potato for supper. Enjoy the hot evening.. Going to be.hotter each day this week.

Does anyone want to watch Whitney Houston sing our national anthem from 1991? She still gives me chills and makes me feel proud!

Lorita - I looked up 'white coat syndrome' because I had to know. I don't have that. It did happen to me once when the check-in person at the doctor's office wanted me to sign up for something privacy invasive and I said "no". She threatened to have the doctor not see me unless I signed up, and a discussion ensued. I did not sign up, and I did see the doctor. I told my doctor about it, not to get her in trouble, but because my blood pressure was slightly elevated. After about 5 min., I was back to normal. Next time I went in, the check-in person was gone. I guess others complained about her.

    Those little calves sound adorable.

Judith and Carl - my cousin had her cataracts done and she's so happy. She essentially said what you both said. I'm itching to get them done. I've been told they can fix your astigmatism at the same time, and I'm so ready for that. Fingers crossed!

Iris - Whitney Houston was an amazing talent.

I had a lot of errands to run today, including going to the Japanese grocery store to pick up a birthday present for my best friend. She's into various Japanese dessert foods so I picked up a couple of them. I don't know what they're called, but I know them on sight. 🙂

I still got my workout in, so I'm good on that front.

Whitney is (in my opinion) the best singer of all time. My favorite song of hers is "One Moment in Time." She was gone too soon.

    Good morning!

GG, sorry you have cataracts. I have them too but mine are not near the stage where surgery is needed. I hope surgery is never needed. I do have friends who had the lens implants that mean they no longer require glasses, except maybe for reading. Some (bifocal folks) even do mono vision lenses. That means the lens for one eye is for distance and the other for reading. It works well. I did that with contacs for a time - but it was actually no lens at all for one eye as my distance vision is fine, and one contac for reading. It worked well but I really found it easier just to use readers than to deal with a contac lens so only did that for a couple of years. I went to nursing school in central Iowa where there is a famous eye clinic. It was said that Elvis was treated there. Cataract surgery has come a long way. It used to be that a person had to be on bedrest with their head between sandbags to prevent movement. (I don't remember for how long but the patient did spend time in the hospital.)

News from the exercise front: I met with a trainer on Monday to work on lifting. I deadlifted 115 pounds! I was very proud of myself. That is my one lift max; I'll do workouts with 75-85% of my one lift max.

HB, sorry your mom's appt was cancelled. Hope she can get the help she needs soon.

We are taking two grandsons to a AAA baseball game today (Iowa Cubs). Looking forward to it! We have very good seats, just a few rows up behind home plate.

Japanese beetles are invading my yard. I noticed a little tree's leaves were brown. On investigation I found literally thousands of J. beetles in the tree. I don't want to use poison because it kills beneficial insects too. So I drop them into soapy water and drown them and then throw their wretched little bodies to the fish in the pond, or into the compost. The trees they are on are birch which apparently are a favorite - those trees are coming down this fall. I don't want to deal with this again. Truly, it is miserable dealing with them. They fly at me and I've had 3 in my hair!!! So now I cover my head and put on a sweatshirt despite it being 90 degrees. I go out and work on them about 3 x a day and speaking of….it's time to go for the first time here soon (7:30).

Speaking of heat…it's been on for a week or two and no end in sight. There are storms in Minnesota that will cross into Iowa tonight and then into Missouri - heads up Carl and Ron.

    Have a good day, everyone!

Good morning. We're having a perfect summer morning— sunny, breezy and not-to-hot. Maybe I'll attempt some yard work later.

Carl— Those are the any traps I used when I had cats. I think Terro works a little better, but the Raid is safe around pets. So safe, in fact, that my cats thought they were toys and would bat them around for fun. When they pulled out my old dishwasher there were probably a half a dozen under there— no ants though.

Gothic G— Lorita is correct white coat hypertension is a phenomenon of a person with normal BP who presents with higher numbers in the office. Mom's is most pronounced with men.

I think you have to pay extra to get the astigmatism lenses. When mom had hers done, she didn't do this. I suspect dad was reluctant to pay the premium. When she wanted to get dental implants, he told her she "wouldn't live long enough for it to be worth the money". This frugality didn't apply to him, when he detached his retina and needed a special procedure, he was happy to go to Miami for a week to have it done by the most highly regarded surgeon. He died in April and she had her implants— completed with the 6-month waiting period— by Thanksgiving.

Lorita— It's a shame we have to be so careful of scams. This probably was smishing. There's a wrong phone number scam that plays on you informing them. Best practice is to ignore. I am horrified at how many scammy texts my mom gets. She has an MD area code, so many are specific to that which makes them easier to identify.

Our local police spare information about new scams of their Facebook page as a community service.

Iris— I remember that cat story. DS was especially impressed by it. His own cats would have sold him down the river for some tuna.

Maybe your cousin accidently set her outgoing voicemail message to the default Spanish version. I wonder if it would cut down on the scams?

    Ron— How's the leg?

    __________________________________________________________

Mom's depression has been a bit more on the surface. There were tears yesterday. She's not able to be on the go or even putter around the house. She blames it on having to tote her POC everywhere when it's really because her heart. This is hard stuff to hear. I did take her to get a haircut and then out shopping and for a milk shake after which brightened her mood. I took her to the thrift store and found a small cherry table ($15) to put next to one of her wing chairs so there's a place for a drink when someone visits. She wanted to buy some nasty used saucepans, but I wouldn't let her. I took her to Home Goods where we found 2 Cuisinart saucepans and a Dutch oven to match. When I reorganized her kitchen during the time I stayed with her to push her IV abx, I tossed all manner of random pot lids that didn't fit any of the pans she had. She's a decent cook and deserves better.

I also spent an hour on the phone trying to sort out a bill she got for 2 CT scans in January of 2025. Aetna had initially paid them promptly and then asked the provider for a refund in June 2016. I lucked out this time. The phone agents at both companies were helpful and have agreed to resubmitting to attempt to get it or a portion of it paid.

Home today for the most part. I'll need to do a quick BP check and grocery run, but that's it.

    Have a pleasant day.

Enjoy Mt. Rushmore! We were there 2 years ago. It was wonderful, except for the bees. We were there in the fall & bees where everywhere! I was stung twice. Both unprovoked stings, ie was in the store there! Anyway, the Black Hills are lovely. I wish you a terrific time!

Beth,,,I can dead lift a full gallon water. I know because I watered/fertilized my ficus trees yesterday. It takes a while since I water a bit at a time. Discovered one pot is cracked all the way down the side. Hmmm. The plants are at least 6 feet tall. Any/all suggestions on that process are welcome. Note: I do have two better looking and slightly larger pots in the garage.

Iris…you certainly keep us informed with interesting posts.

Ron…I am 85 and have a rash on the inside of my thighs. Went to Urgent care where the NP said it was contact dermatitus. I assured her that I have had no contact. Well, she said it could be from detergent. We all had a chuckle.

Weather? Probably hot so I will muck about inside today.

    Interesting tidbit;

    • In 1921, Milne bought his son Christopher Robin the toy bear from Harrods department store.[11][12] Christopher Robin had named his toy bear Edward, then Winnie, after a Canadian black bear Winnie that he often saw at London Zoo, and Pooh, a friend's pet swan they had encountered while on holiday.[13][14][15] The bear cub was purchased from a hunter for C$20 by Canadian Lieutenant Harry Colebourn in White River, Ontario, while en route to England during the First World War.[16] Colebourn, a veterinary officer with the Fort Garry Horse cavalry regiment, named the bear Winnie after his adopted hometown in Winnipeg, Manitoba.[17][18] Winnie was surreptitiously brought to England with her owner, and gained unofficial recognition as The Fort Garry Horse regimental mascot. Colebourn left Winnie at the London Zoo while he and his unit were in France; after the war she was officially donated to the zoo, as she had become a much-loved attraction there.[19] Pooh the swan
    • "Pooh": "Pooh" was the name of a swan the family frequently fed on holidays. Additionally, in the Winnie-the-Pooh books, author A.A. Milne jokes that the bear got the name because he had to make a "pooh" sound to blow flies off his nose when his arms were stuck in the air. [1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

Hi, nice and.hot here todsy. I did go out on the porch this morning at 7 when my groceries were delivered, otherwise I have been inside. I ordered another two cantaloupes-the other two I have gotten have been really good and sweet. Haven't cut the watermelon yet - maybe that will be my supper.

Nanny, I don't think I would feel dressed if I didn't wear a slip with a dress or skirt. Not to worry because I probably won't be wearing either much.

Judith, are you thinking about transferring your ficus to another pot? Why do you have them in pots - so you can bring them inside in the winter?. If f you change pots it would be a two person job.

I'm worried about Mint. Does anyone know to get in touch with her?

Girls.just came put of the barn headed for the pond to get water and take a.dip. I didn't fill the water tank this morning because we had some.fog so grass was wet and I didn't want to get my socks wet. I wear socks all the time- if I don't walking hurts my feet. I need to get some with cushioned soles. Local news and weather is on so will stop for.now.

Stay cool.out there. Heat index is 107

Good morning. Cloudy here with T-storms forecasted from late morning until around 7pm. I have an appointment with my PCP and am meeting friends for dinner. It's going to be a bad hair day.

Ron— I hope you hear back of the rash. The derm should be able to sort you out. I had a rash on my calf which I (and my endo) thought might be a drug reaction. Derm saw it during my annual skin check and wrote it off as dry stressed skin from my operative leg swelling late in the day. She gave me a cream for it and voila— gone in a week. I should have reached out to her sooner.

Lorita— I, too, miss Mint. I hope she's well and her mom is not the reason for her absence.

Iris— I do like a nice farmer's market. There's a weekly farmer's market here at the grange. It's a mix of stuff— lovely but expensive produce, baked goods and even crafts.

    Have a pleasant day.

Morning, sort of cloudy here this morning with some showers north of us. Filled the water tank and talked with the girls as they came in. They're very curious. My girls are used to me talking to them - they just stand and listen. Mike's girls and boys are getting used to it. Stormy and I took some mail to the mailbox and picked up what was there. Saw two or three rabbits and a turtle that had died upside down- no idea what happenef- poor turtle.

Iris, I wear socks and Dawgs sandals so the toes of my socKS get wet if I walk in the wet grass. No dew this morning so dry socks. When do you go to Mount Rushmore? Will there be pictures? Hope so. Where else will you be going on this trip?

HB, I was thinking the same thing about Mint and her mother. I wish there was a way we could get in touch with someone when they're absent a while. There are three of us I can contact and vice versa but we've been around many years. Hard to believe this thread has been going 18 years!

I need to trim both.mine and Stormy:s nails. His aren't so bad if I.catch.him in the right position but it seems my toes get farther away all the time.

Ron, I.hope you're feeling better today. Just saw on the bc weather that rain is headed toward you and Carl. Take care.

Hi again. About those Raid ant baits. I read the label and it says to.not let pets or kids handle or play with them and to put them where they can get to them. Is it liquid inside? I put one on the cabinet behind bottles one on the dresser in the bathroom, another on another cabinet behind something and one.on my bedside table behind things. How long do you leave them out? It must not be liquid or it would have leaked out in the.box. Couldn't find any trace of ants in the pantry so no idea where they come in.

Iris, do you wash the baby carrots before eating? I washed the whole pkg. Under running water and will store them in a LocknLock.

    Good morning.

Lorita, I rinse my baby carrots right before I get ready to eat them.

It's nice that the girls stop to listen to you.

HB, the Original Farmer's Market began during the Depression as a way for farmers to sell their produce. In those days a lot of LA was agricultural. As housing was built around, permanent grocery stores and other shops were built. Now there are over 100 stalls of produce, bakery items, and other merchandise for sale.

Lorita, I will leave for Mt Rushmore in two weeks.

Lorita, the Raid ant baits aren't liquid but I don't really know what's in them. I don't have pets or children so I just spread them on the kitchen counter near where the ants are coming in. The ants are going in and out of the traps, there are fewer of them, and I'm finding some dead ants so I think it's working. I have never used Raid traps before so I don't know how long I will leave them out; until I no longer see ants, probably. I have lots of ants in the flower bed outside the kitchen window and probably should do something about that, or another hive will just take the place of the one I'm killing.

I was scheduled for a second laser eye procedure this morning, but the doctor decided I was doing so well that I didn't need another "if that's all right with you." Avoiding unnecessary treatment is all right with me, so I'm home early. 😎

Iris, you will love Mt. Rushmore. I first saw it in the early morning. We were tent camping, woke early, were there shortly after dawn and had the place pretty much to ourselves. The Black Hills (named for the dark green Ponderosa pine trees that cover them) are beautiful in themselves. I can see why the Native Americans held them to be sacred.

Warm and partly sunny today, getting a few showers. We expect less than a quarter inch, but there are flash flood warnings, so who knows? Ozarks weather is just like a box of chocolates.

    Have a great day!

Carl, thanks, I hope they wotk. Just saw a huge spider on the bed -brown with long legs. Got the fly swatter and, of course missed him. He was among some other things. Couldn't find.him so may change the bed. Looked it up and it's probably a brown recluse now under the bed, I.guess.

What kind of laser surgery did you have? I had bilateral laser surgery years ago because pf narrow angles. Didn't hurt, just felt like someone gently thumping you on your head. I need cataract extractions but really can't figure out how. No one to take me and it's'25 miles away. My.ophthalmologist retired three or four years ago so this would be at Triad. Our neighbor years ago said they would provide transportation but I haven't checked to see if they still do that. One.of Darwin's daughters said she would take me.but she lives 50 miles away and I need to.find another option. Not ready anyway.

Temp.here is 95 with.index of 105. Too hot to be outside.

I don't know what the laser surgery I had is called. The ophthalmologist called it "a new procedure for glaucoma" and the insurance form said "surgery." I had cataract removal several years ago, with plastic lens, but this is unrelated to cataracts.

When my uncle had cataract removal in the 1950s, he had to lie between two sandbags for a couple of weeks, and he didn't get replacement lens. He had to wear really thick glasses and had no peripheral vision outside of the glasses. Now, you get plastic lens that let you see 20/20 and can go back to work the next day as long as no heavy lifting is involved. We're living long enough to see science fiction come true.

Just.had good news I want to share. One of my doctor's nurses called to say my Hantavirus test came back and is negative. He did tell me when I took it two weeks ago that the incubation period may not have been far enough along to get definite results. It has been one month today since possible exposure. Test will be repeated in one month. She did say the test shows I do not have it! Makes me feel.better.

When I.first started working as a medical secretary for the VA.Hospital, in 1961. I worked for an EENT Chief who did lots of cataract extractions. I don't remember the sand bags for that but do remember it was much more involved necessitating a much bigger or longer incision without implants. Also had to be hospitalized for a while.

I remember one patient, Carnie Ritterhoff, who had a retinal detachment and had sandbags on each side of.his head for a while. Odd that I would remember his name but there were two other patients I remember in that room who had eye surgery, Mr. Von Boone and Stuart Newlin. My.first marriage proposal was from Mr. Von Boone who called me Sunshine - I read his mail to.him. Mr. Newlin and his wife became very good friends of mine and later of Charles. That was 64 years ago! But what did I have for breakfast yesterday?

Good news about the negative Hantavirus test, Lorita!

Carl, I know you're glad not to need another eye surgery!

I just came back from the Original Farmer's Market. It has changed a lot from when I was there forty years ago, when it was full of produce and pastries and exotic foods. Now it is full of eating places—it's like a big food court.

First, we had lunch at Cantor's, a Brooklyn-style deli on Fairfax. Pastrami sandwiches are their specialty, but I had a chopped liver sandwich with barley bean soup and potato salad. This deli was built on 1931 and reminded me of delis in my youth.

"Zoltar" from the movie Big with Tom Hanks. This was outside a toy shop, where I purchased a book of Mad Libs—remember those? This is for my next trip.

Overall, it was a nice outing, with good weather and good food. The Original Farmer's Market was okay to revisit, it is more a place for tourists now, because there were mostly places to eat. Actually, the Whole Foods Market across the street probably had better produce and groceries for the home.

If anyone has visitors coming to LA, direct them to a local farmer's market for better produce. But if they want a special Los Angeles eating experience, direct them to the Original Farmer's Market at 3rd and Fairfax. Also, this place is next door to The Grove, which is a huge upscale mall--very LA.
