Sexual aggression in MC

First post here...my dad was diagnosed with vascular dementia last summer. We recently had to move him into MC. He was adjusting well, but then he began exposing himself to others and some touching between him and others. He was moved out of MC onto a regular nursing home floor.

A few days ago, the night nurse found him and his roommate (male) involved in sexual activity. As far as the family knows, he's never had any interest in men. They were separated immediately. Next day, he apparently tried to grab a woman, and became combative as he was directed back to his room. Now he's been moved to a psych hospital for evaluation. They're starting him on Rexulti, hopefully to curb some of his aggression.

He was a 6c on the FAST scale when he was evaluated in March. Is this just more progression of this nasty disease? I know disinhibition is part of it, it's just gotten a bit more overwhelming the last couple weeks. Has anyone else had to deal with this type of aggression and did any other meds help?

    Welcome. Im glad you found our group. I know I have read about others here with this problem. You might try using the search option to find older posts on the topic. As I said they will be old posts, but you might get some helpful information from them. I’m sure someone will come along soon that can relate to what you are going through.

    Try searching on Cimetadine here and even on the internet as it relates to hyper sexuality or sexual disinhibition in patients with dementia. This has to be incredibly difficult. Big hugs to you.

    definitely. Fortunately haven’t dealt with it first hand from my mom, but I have seen others on her MCs struggle with this. Men AND women! It is fairly common. I know it’s awful to have him in a psych hospital but it really may be the best place for him to stabilize on the right meds. Talk to a geriatric psychiatrist. They are absolutely best equipped to deal with this. For what it’s worth my mom had quite a few er visits and psych consults before things settled down, but they DID settle down and she has been doing quite well in stage 6 for 2 years now.
