a new home for dad - update

Hello community,

Dad has been in his new care home since Wednesday, so almost a week. It is much smaller and in a home-like environment. He needed a new place after a stay at a geri psych inpatient hospital due to behavioral expressions.

The entire 2 years at his previous home we struggled to address the anxiety he was dealing with. Incontinence seemed to tip the scales over into agitation and unacceptance of care.

It has not been easy for the staff at his new home, but the approach does feel completely different. I am thankful.

Thursday morning I was able to sign papers after an evaluation with hospice to get him signed up for care with them too. I am beyond thankful.

Feeling fortunate that he is in his new home. School starts for me next week, so I hope he can feel even a little bit more settled over these next few days.

In the midst of it all our puppy swallowed a corn cob and had to have emergency surgery. So it has been a whirlwind. The cone to keep him away from his incison sent him into a panic so much so they removed it right away and explained how important it would be to keep our eyes on him at all times. So we slept in shifts.

To say that the last week has been a blur would be an understatement. July was a bumpy ride for our little family. We're all still here and we're all still kicking.

Glad to hear things are settling down a bit with your dad, and that you could get hospice too.

I’ve had great luck with an inflatable dog cone from Amazon instead of the plastic cone when my pups mustn’t lick or scratch. Plus it looks like a frosted doughnut! See what you think! I thread their regular collar through it for extra security at night. They accept it much better, and they aren’t ramming it into corners.

Thank you @Emily 123 I am relieved, but also exhausted. And I am in that self doubt window that I find myself in after the adrenaline fades. So I really appreciate your reply.

That's a great recommendation for the pup! Thank you! He gets his staples out tomorrow. I am curious to hear an update from the vet. My husband doesn't feel good about leaving him unsupervised - (and neither do I) but I am used to staying busy. Maybe it's been good for me to stay close to home with him while he recovers. I am realizing how much I try to be too many places at once and how hard that is on my own health. Life lessons, I suppose.

Agree - glad things are settling down.

Awww, little pooch… don't be giving your family extra trouble… poor little thing.

It does sound like pup has actually caused you to take a breather, though. But yeah, they are family, too.
