My dad has been diagnosed with Alzheimers over a year. Truthfully, I never knew how to deal with that sad news. Just recently he was diagnosed with bladder cancer. I was adopted and have abandonment issues from it. Now everyday slowly losing my dad. I feel these overwhelming emotions. I just want a good night sleep without fear and aniexty of losing him. I am in therapy which has been wonderful. I need some support or advice.

I am so sorry. When I am totally overwhelmed with anxiety I try something silly like every morning, saying three things to myself that I am grateful for. I also try to give back at difficult times. I can tell you are very devoted to your dad. Do you have any other passions like animals or children where you could volunteer for even an hour a week. Last, exercise is huge—especially if you are having difficulty sleeping. I am thinking of you.

I found that exercising really helped me shed some stress. I liked the more machine-based things (bike, rower, treadmill, stairclimber) where it was 'headphones-tunes-exercise' at whatever level I felt like worked well for me that day. A nice endorphin bump can't hurt, right? Or a walk—just to get out and get some sun and be able to move.

I recommend you read the book “Being Mortal”. It may help you come to terms with the inevitable.

I found that having a few close friends I could really talk to, along with doing something gentle for myself every day (even just a walk or bath) helped me get through the worst times. Hang in there. It’s painful but part of life and good youre there for your dad.

So sorry you are in such a difficult place right now. Everyone's advice is great.

Another idea. It's not for everyone, but if you could use something to take your mind off things, I found temporary relief in mindfully coloring adult coloring books.

It helps me to shut off "unwanted thoughts", to zone out, and feel calmer, if only for a time. It can be very restorative. Below is an example, but there are lot of resources out there, depending on interest. It's relatively inexpensive as I get my color markers from the "dollar" store.
