AL/Memory Care or In Home Care

As I posted previously, my sister's adult day care is closing. She can go to another one of their locations and we are going to try that.

If that doesn't work, we'll need to try something else and I'm torn: In Home Care or just move into a facility?

My sister is only 57 years old and has enough money to pay for about two years of care in a facility. I'm sure she'd outlive her money and end up on Medicaid (which is scary).

She is a veteran who IS NOT eligible for Aide and Attendance. We can get some help through the VA for in home care, although I'm not sure how much. They are paying for her adult day care.

I'm thinking:

  1. Try the other day care location for awhile to see how it goes;
  2. If that doesn't work, contact the VA again to determine how much home care they would fund instead of the day care;
  3. Last resort as a facility.

Or should we just go the facility route if the adult day care doesn't work out?

What were your journeys?

    Marp I have no personal experience with this, but at least one member was able to get her DH designated "catastrophically disabled" through the VA which qualified him for many services including residential care. I seem to remember there were a lot of hoops to jump through, but she was ultimately successful. You might want to search that phrase here on the forum as well as googling it to see what you can find. Or perhaps others will chip in as they remember. Worth finding out.

    M1 -

    Thank you. My sister is rated at 70% for service connected disability due to a PTSD diagnosis triggered by some things that happened to her in the military. With the fuzziness of our understanding of PTSD, I'm nervous about reopening her case for fear they'll change their minds and say she isn't service connected for that.

    Another option would be to see if your state offers some sort of veteran's home for LTC. These aren't affiliated with the VA but can be less expensive than other MCFs in your area. In PA fees are on a sliding scale.

    Do any MCFs offer day programs in your area. I know the one where my aunt lived had a handful of folks come as day residents.

    Thank you harshedbuzz.

    My state does have several veteran's homes, one about 15 miles from me. I have been in contact with them.

    I've asked about day programming in MCFs nearby....so far... no luck.

    My sister's day care is funded by the VA so we have to go to a facility that contracts with them. Even if I could find a MCF that took day participants, the VA may not pay and it has been soooo helpful having the VA pay.
