Good morning my porch friends.
HB I'm sorry to read your mom isn't rebounding like you'd hoped. And now your down. That's no fun at all. Ugh.
Has Iris been posting and I'm missing it? I know she lost her phone on her trip, but that's the last post I recall seeing.
Crazy windy here and dare I say it, quite warm. It's 79 now, @ 10:00am! Forecast said we may reach mid-eighties' today. But then tomorrow the high is suppose to be 42! I plan on getting us out today then we'll be in tomorrow and a big pot of soup going waiting for the Chief's & the Super Bowl.
I know the weather is going to change, the squirrels are going nuts in the back yard. Breaking and hiding acorns everywhere. Its driving Madison crazy watching them! I think I'll give her a quick bath then head outside for some vitamin D.
Let's be safe everyone.

Lovely soft rain this morning…good for working on files and making vegetable beef soup.

Morning, no rain here yet but it looks like it may come anytime. Ws warmer earlier but 49 right now and wind is getting up. My groceries were delivered at 8:15 so got them.put away. I ended up with a pkg. Of celery hearts and another head of celery. I may try making cream of celery soup. No cream here but might try a spoonful of yogurt or cottage cheese. Also got two lbs.of . carrots and just noticed they are organic. Wondering if the recall is over and they are okay to eat.
Just saw something comical; heard Sheena or Stormy bark, looked out and saw one of the girls chasing two big geese that have been around a week or so. She was telling them they weren't going to get her baby who was right behind her. Mother cows are very protective of their babies. Last year the geese had little ones and they would swim on the pond with one in front and the four gosllngs in a tow behind him with the other goose coming up behind. Hope they have little ones this year.
HB, so sorry your mother isn't doing too well. Hope she improves quickly. Sorry you're not feeling well- get better soon.
I have been wondering about Iris, too. Hopefully, she will post soon.
When mother was in a NH I did her laundry but took a red negligee set she liked to her and it disappeared quickly. When daddy was in a NH I kept hard candy for him and he told me "the kids" would come in and get his candy. After that we kept it at the nurses desk for him.
Covid and flu really getting bad here. Wear your masks!! Darwin can't find his so need to take some to him. He has a doctor's appt. Friday so needs to wear one. Back later

Ron…how are you?
Iris…how are you?

HB, sorry you are ill and your mom isn't doing so well.
We did not get the snow or ice overnight. Whew! Mint, did you get any?
Super Bowl tomorrow! Looking forward to it.

Hello Front Porch Friends.
I was also thinking about iris. I miss her postings, I pray 🙏 she's doing good.
Eaglemom. I know exactly what you ment by saying, you hate to mention about your good weather. I feel the same way. We are 74 with a high of 80 today. I do miss living in Oregon, but I like the Arizona, weather better.
Carl. When my DH was in a MC, facility, he was always missing his cloths. It did not bother him at all. When I would go visit he would have other people's cloths on and they would have his on. That did not bother me at all, as long as he had clean cloths on, and he always did. Good luck finding a care facility, close to where you live. I was lucky, we lived in a small town and we had a facility for both AL and MC.
HB. Sorry your mother is not responding as well as you hoped. And very sorry her kitty has passed, that must have been very hard on her. Thank you for saying my cat Sammy, has a cute face, that face is what I fell in love with 3 years ago. In the mornings if I'm not getting up when he thinks I should, that cute little face, is smelling my face to make sure I know he's hungry. You're so right, our senior pictures back in the days, we all looked older. We were restricted on what we could ware and how we posed. Please take care of yourself, get as much rest as you can.
My DD and I just got home from grocery shopping, now I need to get some rest.
Hugs to all. Zetta

Consumer Reports tested some facial tissues and concluded the Great Value Everyday brand from Walmart was better than Kleenex or Puffs. I tried some and agree, plus they cost about half as much. The Sam's Club brand was rated even better, but I don't use Sam's anymore since the kids grew up. Great Value canned goods are really good too and you aren't paying for the TV ads. WM had a bunch of football-shaped cakes and cupcakes on a table by the door, but I'd rather have a pot of soup. 🥘

The front came through as promised. It went from 84 to 58 in 15 minutes. It triggered a migraine for me, but thankfully I knew my pre-headache signs and got medicine on board before it was too bad. I did give Madison a bath. Then I played with taking her picture. I'll share tomorrow.
Good night and be safe.

Good night, Eaglemom. Good night, porch friends. And good night, Mrs. Calabash, wherever you are.

Good morning
HB sorry you and mom are having such a rough patch. Listened to TWIV yesterday and my understanding is flu is running rampant in a lot of places right now. Hope you get to feeling better soon.David I hope you are ok. Have not seen you on the porch for a while. Iris concerned about you too.
Beth we did not get our freezing rain til yesterday afternoon. They were salting the roads ahead of time so hopefully I’ll be able to go to church this morning. My sister and brother-in-law had to pick up my nephew from the Columbus airport last night about 11 PM. I see she left me a message at 12:15 AM saying they were home safe and sound so the roads must’ve been pretty good because they got back home at a decent time from picking him up. Looks like we are going to have same weather as HB is having over next couple of weeks.Carl interesting about GV facial tissue. Find most of the GV products I have tried to be of good quality, if not all of them.
Take care

Happy Superbowl to those who observe. We're in a sea of green and excitement. They're greasing the poles as we speak. DH said the store was mobbed with folks securing their snacks and beverages. I can't say we're rabid fans, but DH usually catches games if we're home, especially during the playoffs. Sometimes I get hooked and join him. My dad was the ride-or-die Iggles fan— he attended the 1960 championship game at Franklin Field. Not sure what we'll do today. DS is working tonight, so maybe I'll make us a pizza.
We didn't have that big an issue with missing clothes. I think it was because the aides helped interested residents do their own laundry in each neighborhood making it into an activity for those up to it. They used Speed Queens, so the clothing didn't get overly beat up in industrial machines. That said, there was one gentleman who made off with dad's slippers and an 8 x 10 of my mom on the regular. My SIL took care of MIL's laundry at home when she had to go to the SNF. MIL wore those snap front house coats and was tiny, so I suspect nobody else there would have been able to get into them.
Lorita— It's funny, when my MIL was in a SNF (not a dementia facility) she put a large bowl of candy miniatures in MIL's room to encourage staff to drop in for a snack.
Carl— I've not tried Walmart's house brand. I very rarely get to Walmart as the nearest ones are an ugly 35-minute drive away. I do find them to have good prices on laundry, cleaning and health & beauty. Better than Target or my local grocery stores anyway. I understand they have upped their fashion game; a very fussy friend got some summer pants there last year and raved about them.
Eaglemom— I'm glad you were able to derail the worst of your migraine. DH gets ocular migraines with weather changes— scintillating scotomas that impair his vision. At least he doesn't get the headache part or the nausea.
Lady Zetta— My son's school still does the traditional yearbook pose with boys in a tuxedo and girls in a black drape just like I did back in the day. The boys wear a fake rose boutonniere which kind of ruins the whole effect. My nieces in Indiana did extensive photoshoots with wardrobe changes, professional hair & makeup in various settings. DH thought they looked like old time Playboy Playmate shots of girls with clothes on looking wholesome. He wasn't wrong.

I woke up this morning to a phone that reported 5.35" of snow in the last 24 hours at my location. We did get a dusting around 8pm, but it quickly turned to rain. They really blew that one.

Good morning, cold, windy band cloudy here. Good day to stay inside and watch tv and later football.
HB, I have had ocular migraines for 50 or more years. No headaches just the tiny spot with no vision, then the boomerang shaped lights that increases in size, then disappears. Not often and no idea what triggers them.
Fed the birds and cats, let the GPs out and in and they're sound asleep niif ow. I'm having hot tea and talking with my friends. Sandy, so enjoyed our visit last night. Hope you well today.
Ron, good morning to you. Hope you're feeling better. Come visit with us today. David and Iris, hope both of you are well. Look forward to seeing posts from both of you.
Mint, our area may have ice two times this week. Much rather have snow but don't look forward to either. Stay safe this coming week. Have you heard anything about organic carrots being unsafe?
0 -
Cold and cloudy here too, snow with a base coat of ice predicted starting Monday evening. Brrr
Lorita, the bad carrots were recalled so the carrots you just bought should be fine. I'm eating mine with no problems. 🥕
My niece called last night. She and her mother (my brother's widow) are struggling along, niece had gall bladder surgery and SIL is getting a nerve stimulator to ease the pain from pinched nerves.
I see a lot of people wearing Chief's fan gear. Is there a game today?

The sun is so bright that one needs sunglasses inside.
Soup on the heat…stew meat, can diced tomatoes, some onions, water, Better Than Bullion, package of frozen mixed vegetables and just for the hell of it some marinara.
I spent yesterday with Dick which means spending time sorting books or reading what he wrote. The man was a beautiful writer. Now that I am older I understand him better.
This morning I watched Kens Burns' Jefferson. The angst we are feeling is so very similar to that which he, Adams and Hamilton felt in our very new country. Both Jefferson and Adams died on the 50th anniversary of the the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Jefferson never finished Monticello. If yu have the chance do watch it. It is available on PBS.

Judith, I will look for that show, sounds good. I just boiled half a dozen eggs for the GPs, froze four and left two for later today or for breakfast. . They were five weeks old, or five weeks from the time I bought them. I tested them in water, appearance and smell. Probably would last a week.or two more. Made breadcrumbs for the birds from ends of french bread and fed the GPs.
Your soup sounds good. I will probably make some tomorrow to have while it's so cold. I dread having more snow or ice. I think I mentioned my daffodils are up 4-6 inches. I know you enjoyed your time with Dick and bet there were some tears.
Carl, I have heard rumors about a football game later today. Can't remember who's playing though.
News just said the flu season is the worst in 15 years with 25 million people being sick with it. Wear your masks!!

Halftime, 24 to 0. What is happening, Eagle?

good morning
hope you enjoyed your soup Judith
Lorita I do not know anything about the organic carrots glad Carl had information for you. I saw the moon this morning and see it will be the full snow moon on Wednesday.
Looks like we might be in for a wintry week.0 -
Here…….
Lorita, I just don't know what happened to our Chief's. Still my team though.

good morning

Eagle, they said the defensive frontline of the Eagles averaged 6'7" and about 350'lbs. The Chiefs just couldn't protect Mahomes long enough for him to get set up.. But, that last TD pass he threw was something else. Jalen Hurts, QB for the Eagles played QB for the Sooners and was runner-up for the Heisman. Really good player.
It's cold and cloudy here with rain tonight. Cold week ahead.
I talked with Joan yesterday. She is still waiting for a diagnosis. She said she has a hard time walking and breathing. If you all remember she was very active until the back surgery. Such a sweet person.

good morning….
I do not remember Joan

Thanks for the information Lorita.
Cold, damp day here. I've been trying to get things ready for taxes. I'm pretty organized for the tax preparer already. What I do that drives me crazy is see exactly how we spent our funds. I break it into numerous categories and then can compare from year to year how much more we're spending. I know our groceries will have gone up significantly, ugh. I'm sure I'll find more little surprises!! I don't have to do that - I choose to do it.
DH is hungry for lunch, so I need to get that going. I've had a nice talk about how we're masking up everywhere again. He totally agreed and understood. We have a friend in the hospital with Covid and DH doesn't want that. Certainly not with his crummy lungs. Let's be safe everyone.

Judith, Joan lives in Colorado. Her husband was Harv and he was in a nursing hime. She has two granddaughters who were involved in FFA and showed swine and calves. She was very active, going for long walks with friends and driving to see Harv in another town.
She had to have back surgetpry. I remember there was lots of conversations on our thread about the doctor not wanting her to wear a back brace after surgery. Then, she got short of breath and she said she had been walking with a walker but was too short of breath so went almost entirely bedfast. She lived to another town after selling her houseband posted pictures of her new place. She had been on our thread almost from the beginning. Her avatar name was Telinde. Maybe that's what threw you. Cold here with a cold north wind. Going to rain and get colder.
Eagle, I need to get started on my tax ptep, too. Have to find someone new to do them after my CPA we had used for 40 years retired.
Can't imagine where Iris is. Wish she would pist. Maybe getting a new phone or tablet.
No more pennies I just heard. What next!

oh, Telinde

Hello Front Porch Friends.
Lorita. I also did not remember Joan, until you reminded us it was Telinde. Will she come visit us on the porch someday? Yesterday I watched the Puppy Bowl, it was on before the Supperbowl. They had some baby GPs on there, they were so cute, I was thinking of you.
Judith. I'm sure spending time, with Dick, and all your good memories of ths past, was good for you. I bet that soup was delicious, and you enjoyed it. It sounds so good, I want to make me some.
Carl. I'm a Walmart shopper and I also use a lot of the GV tissues. Most of my groceries come from Walmart. I sure like the idea that they deliver them right to my front door.
Gotta go 🚶♂️ I got some dogs 🐕 🐕 that need to go out. Hugs Zetta

I'm sorry the football game didn't turn out the way you hoped. I hope it was exciting to watch in spite of that.
I followed football when I was in high school, not for the game itself, but because I was in marching band (which I loved). I faithfully went to every game. My college didn't have a football team back then — they still don't, which is different, I guess.
Our weather has been really cold. It's been in the 20s at night, and today it got up to a balmy 37 degrees. There's still some snow on the ground. I choose to look at the bright side - this weather is good practice for our Fairbanks trip next month.
A happy occasion coming up for me, also next month - the Death Guild (my "home" goth club) anniversary party. We're planning on driving down to San Francisco for it.
Here is what I expect: Cupcakes! We've already got our tickets - as always, we opted for the anniversary package, so we'll get a Death Guild coffee mug, five hours of music selected by the DJs (this is my main way of keeping current with the music), and a "spooky treat." I'm intrigued. It should be a fun night - and I'm sure my feet will hurt the next day. 😄
I hope all of you with ice are being careful out there. We also have ice, and I treat it with the respect it deserves. Last thing I want to do is slip and fall.
HB - I'm sorry that your mom isn't bouncing back as quickly as she might, and I'm so sorry to hear about her cat. I'm sad for her. I hope you're starting to feel better, yourself.
Lorita - I heard about the pennies! According to NBC News, pennies cost about three cents to make, but nickels cost about eleven cents to make. So I guess the nickel could be the "what's next?"

Let's just round it up to $.25 and call it a day…

The number one hit song in 1931 (IIRC) was "Brother Can You Spare A Dime?" Of course a dime would buy a loaf of bread or two in 1931.
Our grandchildren will say "Penny for your thoughts" and the response will be "What's a penny?"

Good morning
Lorita I’m glad you’re able to check in on Joan for us. I do miss hearing from her and I wonder about her from time to time. Sorry to hear that she’s having such a struggle.Zetta so nice seeing you back on the porch regularly. I hope whatever is keeping Iris from posting gets resolved soon.
You are right Carl that’s happened to a lot of things besides pennies.
I have mentioned on here that I’ve adopted some of the other residents that sit out in the lobby routinely with my mom. Two of them S&M I am able to converse with some. A very normal conversation is held with S. She does not seem to have any dementia, she’s 93 and just a little frail. I noticed her being short of breath quite a bit. When I first started visiting, I wondered why M was there. She didn’t visibly do anything that got your attention and she looks pretty good. When I first visited, she was very quiet but now she is use to my sister and I. She tells us we’re really good daughters. But as you try to talk more with her, I see she has dementia poor thing. My sister and I had caught onto that she was anxiety ridden, worries about everything. I totally understand why she is now. It’s just another horrible thing that the disease does to people. S and I was talking about her birthdate, that’ll be coming up before too long. M says to me I don’t know when my birthday is. I could tell that it had her upset and so I just said it is OK M. I said that happens sometimes. She says, but how do I find out and she was anxious about that. I explained that she could ask the nurse and surprisingly to me she had no clue who the nurse was. So I took her over to where the nurse was and I told the nurse that she was concerned about her birthdate and could she tell us what M‘s birtdate was. So she very kindly took a piece of paper and wrote 8/14/47.. M keeps looking at that paper and then she says to me what does this mean and she was pointing to the eight. So I told her that was August I said, would you like for me to write it out and she said yes, so I did that. She looks at me and I felt so sorry for her. She says I am not stupid, I did really well in school, but she says I just cannot remember. She’s one of those that’s very well aware of her issues. I tried to comfort her, but really what can you say that could help them. I can just keep visiting, give them a familiar face, a smile and that I care for them.
My sister knows the chef there. He was the chef at the prison when my sister worked at the prison. My mom tells me that he’s a very good cook, but she doesn’t eat a whole lot. My sister asked him yesterday. He said your mom eats really well. He said every morning for breakfast she has a boiled egg, oatmeal and bacon. My mom has told me he comes around every day and checks on them how they’re eating and any complaints they have. He told my sister he uses a five week schedule and that every once in a while he just does something off the cuff. He said the dietitian told him he is doing a very good job because residents are not losing weight. In fact most of them have gained one or 2 pounds. I think that says a lot about him and the facility because that is often a big complaint of residents I know. And that was interesting to find out that there was a dietitian associated with the facility. I had no idea. More and more things show me that even though they call themselves assisted living they are definitely more than that. was interesting to find out that there was a dietitian associated with the facility. I had no idea.
