Mint, I am glad to hear your mother is in such a nice place. It gives me hope that my wife, who was born in 1947 like M, can be in a nice place too. S is right, you are two good daughters.

GG, thanks for posting. I live very quietly and it is good to hear that there is life out there, even if it does call itself Death. 🙄

    Good morning front porch rockers!

Im sitting in the parking lot at the VA waiting on my appointment time for my snap in teeth. I was told the procedure will take about two hours. Tomorrow is the appointment for radiology oncology and pouring down rain both days.

Good Morning all, sorry that is been so long but I had the flu and spent 10 days in the hospital. It was so bad that my wife said the doctors said that if I did not make it through the first night then I would not make it.

It is going to be a long long haul but I will make it

Morning, cold, cloudy and windy here. We had rain night so it's wet, too.

Mint, you are one of the kindest people I have ever known, and so patient. Taking the time to visit with the residents and getting to know them. Taking the time to help that lady find out when her birth date is meant so much to her and relieved her anxiety. I had occasion to visit one of our contract nursing homes when I was working and will always remember that when I went in one of the residents reached out and took my hand when I passed by. Just to have someone speak to them and acknowledge them means so much to them.

I am glad your mother is doing so well there. Makes you know she is safe and taken care of. When my.parents were in nursing homes at different times and homes I visited at different times and made a point of getting to know the personnel. I know you are doing the same thing.

Carl, looks like you may have ice this week. Be careful. Guess I better get my change rolled and changed into paper money before it goes away. Hate rolling coins, even got a thing that is supposed to help - it didn't for me.

    Back later.

Carl — I mostly live quietly too - I write, read, and play board games for the most part. But Monday night is Death Guild, which is live for the people actually at the club, but mostly online for me. So I'm living vicariously. But you know what? If you popped into the online Death Guild chat, it looks a lot like this thread, although it happens in real time. Sure, people are talking about the music - what's good, bad, or indifferent. But, they're also talking about their cats, the weather, our various health issues. I guess that's why I post about it — we're all basically the same, some of us just wear a bit more black. 🙂

Ron - I hope all goes well for you this week and next.

Alrighty, back to work for me.

I hope everyone has a great day!

Hi from Virginia. I haven’t posted for a while but I do read everyday. You are all included in my prayers whether you’re a caregiver now or have been in the past.

Not much happening here except the weather. I’ll post a picture of our beautiful snow. Unfortunately my son left for Nashville yesterday and isn’t going to be back until Sunday. We will definitely be snowed in. No one clears these mountain roads. We are expecting freezing rain when the snow ends tonight.

It’s nice to see some new people posting here. I’ve been here for 11 years now and I can’t believe it’s been 9 since my DH has been gone. This thread has been such a blessing from the days when I didn’t know what I was doing and now having such a good friendship with Lorita.

Our rescue horses are still going strong. They all had such hard lives but now they have a beautiful home. The chickens haven’t been giving us as many eggs in the cold weather but I’m the the only one who will occasionally eat one. I haven’t been using them for baking because my DIL is dieting. I’m still missing home. It’s impossible to meet people, we’re to far from town and there aren’t any senior groups that I can find. Well that’s enough of my complaints.

    Everyone take care.

    That is a beautiful snow.

Ron and David…we need those updates so thank you.

Still hard work finding a house for my ex son-in-law. Now we are negotiating closing price. Fingers crossed. I must admit that this is a bit stressful.

Ron, sorry you got your appointment days mixed up. Darwin doesbthst, too. I try to remember to write mine in my journal or on the calendar. Hope you're n feeling better and the appointments go well. Sandy, happy to see your post. Sounds like your son left yesterday. Hope he has a safe trip and that you and your DIL stay safe while he's gone. She will have a job taking care of the animals while he's gone. You better stay in and stay safe. Guess the chickens will stay in the coop out of the snow. What will Petunia,or Pansy, do if he has to stay in? The picture is good but looks cold. What kind of tree or shrub is that? How much snow are you all going to have? Sounds like we will just get rain or maybe a little sleet mixed in. North of us they will have snow. Time goes so fast, doesn't it? Hard to believe it's been nine years and that you have been in Virginia over two years.

Carol called early this morning. Her youngest daughter is having a cholecystectomy today and she remembered I had it done and needed some reassurance. She said she was just not able to go since it was in Tulsa. I told her Sally would be home this afternoon.

Zetta, I'm watching Wagon Train. They are back to two, hour long shows today I like that better. Enjoy your warm weather while we shiver. Back later.

    Hello Front Porchers.

Lorita. We must be watching the same Wagon Trains, mine are also one hour long today and back to back. I do like that much better. Do you watch it on INSP? The first one was the couple got married and joined the train. I'm not paying too much attention to this one.

Sandy. Nice hearing from you. I know what you ment by saying your not meeting people. Since I moved in with my daughter, in Arizona, I have not met anyone, but that's OK I'm not a social person anyway. But I do miss Oregon. But not the snow, you can have all of that.

David. The news has been saying the flu, is really going around. Sorry you got sick enough to go to the hospital for 10 days. Please stay warm and get lots of rest.

Mint. It is nice being back on this thread, I missed all of you. You are so sweet to take interest in those that need 💕 it. When I was working in the kitchen at the Al/MC facility that Dan, was in, so many people reached out for attention. It was sad.

Ron. I think I had the same thing done with my teeth that you had done. Sounds like you may have got more post then I did. I only got two on the lower gum. It took twice to take. 😑 I go in tomorrow so the dentist can see when its time for the teeth. I sure hope when it's time it won't take 2 hours. 😬

    Take care all. Hugs Zetta

Eagle, I couldn't get your pictures to show up on my tablet.. Sorry. I know they were cute.

    Good night, everyone.

    Hello from rainy Alabama,

Rained all day yesterday and more to come today with flood watches and possible severe weather predicted. Temps in the 50's today plunging to the 20"s by tomorrow morning. That's always the problem and set up for tornados, so it's a weather alert day here.

The snow is so pretty Sandy, but I can't deal with too much of that. And Eagle, Madison is adorable.

We have to be on the road today for errands. DH is already in the kitchen prepping for the bi-weekly Scottsboro run.

HB, I'm hoping your Mom is better. And, I'm so sorry about the cat. David and Ron, hope you both continue to improve. The flu is no joke this year. Several surrounding counties have closed schools due to the high number of cases.

One good thing about today is dinner is already prepared. I made a huge sheetpan of roast chicken and veggies yesterday and a loaf of fresh bread. All I have to do today is throw some asparagus in the oven.

    Everyone have a good day.

    Good morning

David I was a little worried about that. I’m glad that you’re feeling a little better and I hope you continue to improve.

Ron we all have those days.

Sandy the snow is beautiful. Our trees and grass have had a layer of ice for a few days. This morning they’re giving snow a short period of freezing rain and then it’s to warm up through the evening and into the night and start raining so I guess we’ll lose the ice. Know it has to be a little tough to leave all you’ve known and go somewhere new.

Zetta and Lorita I really enjoy talking with older people and always have. Lol I’m going to soon be one of those older people. I know their days have to get long and boring so I hope visiting gives them all a little break.

Good to see you back in your rocking chair this morning JeriLynn. I’m sure all those you cook for appreciate that a lot. That’s a problem for so many older or disabled people. Saw where your area may have a little rough weather today. Love when there’s good leftovers and I don’t have to cook.

Good morning on the porch. I'm a little late but Go Birds 🦅. Time to trash the city. To be honest, the fans would trash it either way. It's a Philly thing.

Judith— Funny you mention Jefferson, DH watched some of that last night. It's still a great examination of the man, but the improvements in technology since it was made mean it looks old.

I hope Iris is just off traveling again and will be back soon to share her stories. It's not the same without her.

David— I am glad you're on the mend. It's pretty unusual to spend 10 days in the hospital; you must've been quite sick.

Ron— Good luck today at the dentist. I hope the new teeth exceed expectations. My implant too almost exactly a year— the extraction was done 12/17 and the new tooth wasn't seated until 12/10 the following year. Mom's took about 8 months but she had no grafting. She had a temporary set without molars for cosmetic purposes at least.

Mint— It's nice you're able to socialize with some of the other residents. My late MIL used to get pretty salty if we didn't give her 100% of our attention when visiting. DS was a cute preschooler at the time and attracted quite an audience. She didn't like to share.

Eagle— Thanks for sharing the pictures of Madison. That's quite the photoshoot with themed props and such.

Jerilynn— I hope the weather behaves itself. I have a friend who used to live in Birmingham who had a number of friends and family impacted by tornados. They spent this time of year on edge as a result.

    ___________________________________________________________________________________

Things went sideways this week. I think I've mentioned that I have been concerned about mom's recovery from the January infection/pneumonia. I took her Monday for the first of two blood cultures to confirm that the staph was successfully treated. She wasn't doing well on 2l., so we bumped her up to 3l. but she was still shuffling slowly and needed to rest every 10 feet or so. She wasn't this bad last week. She blamed it on staying up too late watching the game.

We'd been warned about a downturn in breathing as the steroids were reduced and stopped, but this was next level. Parsing mom's breathing is sometimes complicated by her stress-induced asthma triggered by her frustration— or worse, mine. She was in a good mood and asked me to take her for lunch— she opted for Arby's because she likes the shakes. I tried to make an appointment with pulmo for her to be seen, but I think there was an issue at the office. No one was answering the phones and the prompts to leave a message looped back to the initial recording.

Yesterday, she felt worse, so we went to the ER. I thought about calling one of her doctors, but they'd likely have turfed her to the ER from the office which would be later in the day when it was busier— so we skipped that part. FTR, when we arrived, there were 8 people in the waiting area; when I left at 6pm there were about 80. We got there about 10:30 and were promptly triaged to the area reserved for things like sutures and sprains/simple fractures. I thought great. Some steroids and few breathing treatments and we'd be back on track. Nope. The ER doc listened to the history of the last 3 admissions, looked up her charts, and called the attending hospitalist who said "better send her upstairs" so she was admitted. Poor thing.

We got snow here overnight, so I'll need to wait until the roads are better to collect her non-formulary meds. DS has a dental appointment to get his Invisalign trays at 10:30. Maybe we'll swing by then.

    Be safe out there today.

    HB

    Good morning!

HB, you said how hard it has been for your mom to recover after the pneumonia. I'm having the same problem! My pneumonia was in November and my breathing has gotten worse and coughing, especially after talking, is bad. Nothing that has been given me seems to help.

Louisiana is having rain, rain and more rain.

HB, so sorry your mom isn't doing well. She's having a very rough time. You are so good to advocate for her and to do all the things you do for her. You are amazing. I am very sorry about her cat too. I know how hard it is to lose a beloved pet. Been there too many times. 😟

Ron, I'm sad that you also are having trouble recovering from pneumonia. Keep an eye on your pulse ox and seek help if it goes too low. A gal I know, age in the 50s, has been sick with coughing for 3 weeks despite an inhaler, mucinex, steroids and two courses of antibiotics. She has been treated for pneumonia. One must wonder if there is a tough viral pneumonia going around, when antibiotics don't do the job, or there is recurrence.

David, sounds like you were very ill. I'm glad you are back at the VA and praying for your continued recovery. We have hired a contractor to do some work for us and last week he was ill, so couldn't come; this week one of his guys is sick (influenza A) so not coming now and not sure when. Take good care of yourself, David. Rest and fluids.

Iris and Jo, if you are reading, you are missed.

JeriLynn, glad you are back posting. We worry about our friends here when they are gone.

Eagle, Madison is an absolute doll! I heard they just had the Westminster dog show. I missed it but hear the giant schnauzer was best of show. I have a miniature schnauzer. They are very good looking dogs but my understanding is that the mini and the giant are truly 2 different breeds with different temperments.

Zetta, your Sammy and Molly are adorable too!

I'm sorry for you who are lonely or sick. We moved and I am trying my hardest to meet others. One must not forget the old friends when you move; in Girl Scouts we sung a song "Make new friends but keep the old. One is silver and the other gold." It takes work and putting yourself out there to work on friendship but it's worth it in my opinion. I need socialization. It's like air.

Lorita, on the news they said a snow swath including OK today. Be careful if you get it; stay inside where it's warm and not slippery.

2 1/2 inches of snow so far with more coming down. It's a very light fluffy snow, not wet and heavy like the last time.

    Take care. ❄️

    Good morning all.

Thank you for allowing me to show off Madison. DH and I are smitten by her, & she knows it! She's good for us. She keeps an eye on DH and runs to me to 'tell on him' if she thinks he's doing something wrong. He gets our mail and she watches him from the dining room window. If he doesn't walk right back up the drive way she runs for me and barks. (He'll be chatting with a neighbor.)

HB I'm so sorry your moms back in the hospital. Bless her heart, and yours. She's just having a rough time.

Ron the same for you, your having a rough time. I'm hoping time and both you and HB's mom will both be much better.

I certainly am happy to see some friends of old posting again, that's nice.

During the night we had heavy rain. Its damp and chilly today. Apparently tomorrow, Thursday we have possible icing conditions. The only good thing is that it won't last long.

    Let's everyone be safe.

Very slick roads here this morning. I have not seen a car go by.

Bad weather, dental work, sick relatives, pneumonia, flu, ailing pets……too much. It may be time for a cocoa party on the porch!!!! I will bring the marshmallows…lots so we can have s'mores after skating on the pond.

    Good morning.

I just got home from the dentist, and alls well with my new implants. It's still a wait till I get the teeth. We had lots of wind yesterday. Another wind storm Friday. We went out and brought a lot of stuff in. We're getting wind warnings.

Eagle. Madison, is precious and dogs are so smart, he knows to watch out for his Papa. When I got home from the dentist this morning, my cat Sammy, ran out into the garage and Molly, went out and chased him back in.

JeriLynn. Your dinner sounds so good. We are also having chicken tonight. Shake and Bake. Be careful when you're out about, with that storm warning.

Mint. Visiting is the best thing for some of those seniors, a lot of them have no one. It means more then you know, to them as well as the staff. When Dan, was in MC, the staff welcomed all the visitors, it brings so much comfort to the residents.

HB. Your poor mom, you are so good to her. Your both in my prayers 🙏 how is she doing today?

Ron. Your probably in the dentist chair right now. I hope you're feeling better today. I'm sure you will be tired when the dentist gets done. So get plenty of rest today.

    Hugs to all. Zetta

Good afternoon, spent the last 15 minutes reading. Pneumonia is a hard thing to recover from. I had double pneumonia when I was in highbschool. Thought In had a broken rib from.playing basketball. Then had it a few years later. I did ask my doctor about taking the Prevnar 20 vaccine they advertise so much and he said not to take it. Said it isn't worth taking and doesn't work.

David and Ron, just be careful what you do, take your meds and you'll be okay- just takes time. We don't bounce back too fast as We get older.

We had rain overnight so imagine the roads are awful. There is a little area of snow we may get shortly. I didn't want to get up so stayed in bed until 10:30. Don't know what the cats and GPs thought was wrong but they were going nuts, running and jumping (the cats). All if them are sound asleep now since they got me up.

Jerry, my BIL, called and said they have ice in the Texas Panhandle. He is 94 so warned him to stay inside.

Saw one cow come out of the barn this morning. I bet all of them were inside last night and came out before I got up. Hate for them to be out in the rain and cold. That's harder on them than snow.

Thought I would make vegetable soup but I may make Ramen instead. I cook two pkgs. of it and add the seasoning packet and a can.of cream of mushroom soup. Really good and.no prep work. I am lazy today.

Back later. Everyone stay in and be safe.

Seems like i can't win! The dentist was having problems with upper right side. He finally figured out that one of the inplants was was not locking in. I still had the other three on the top that was ok, so he was able to continue. At some time later they will go in and do another inplant. I stopped for some chicken on the way home. After eating I took my uppers out and had a little blood on them. I worked on the bottom fir 10 minutes and i couldn't remove it. Rested and tried again and rested and finally got the lowers out. Since he had so much trouble today, he wants me back Friday to make sure everything is OK.

Ron. Were you able to chomp down and eat the same day your teeth got put in? If so that's a good thing. Hopefully your dentist can get the other inplant fixed. I bet your tired after all of that.

HB Sorry your mom has landed back up in the hospital. My mom does get a little jealous. I try to be careful about that be sure I give her attention too.

Beth, it’s nice when the snow is light and dry. I think maybe we’re getting snow this weekend. From what I can tell it’s probably not going to be dry. Believe it’s gonna be preceded by rain if I remember right

Judith, I will bring hot chocolate. Maybe someone else can bring a big pot of coffee . I like a mocha now and then.
