Comparing Clinical Care in Boston

Hello, I'm from the Boston area and new to the discussion. I am wondering if anyone has gotten recent care for a loved one at either Boston Center for Memory (BCM) or Mass General Hospital's Memory Disorders Division? My 82-year old mother has mild ALZ but will probably NOT choose to pursue anti-amyloid treatments (Leqembi). We have been going to BCM for about 6 months and have had a positive experience so far; they seem knowledgeable and thorough and it is conveniently located. The rest of my family (who are giving input from afar) would like to move her care to Mass General. Though it's reputation is amazing, I wonder if it has much more to offer someone in her shoes not interested in infusions. If you have had experience at either of these facilities and are willing to share your impressions (advantages/disadvantages), it would be so helpful. Thank you in advance!

If you're happy, I wouldn't change. Unless your mom is interested in being a research participant or doing infusions, I wouldn't move.

I can appreciate that MGH has a terrific reputation, but there isn't a cure or truly effective treatment, so enduring a waiting list and making drives into the city as your mom progresses seems needlessly stressful.

When my aunt was guardian to someone (sister) with dementia and part of the decision team for another sister with dementia, she did not seek care at MGH despite working there. She did encourage care at MGH for her ex-husband with a brain tumor and her sister with Parkinson's that turned out to be supranuclear palsy for a second opinion.

My dad was seen at Penn's Memory Center for diagnosis, beyond that they didn't offer much. I will do the same for mom should the need arise. We relied more heavily on the geripsych we found locally for dad to help with moods and behavior. My dear friend saw her elderly mom through dementia under the care of a good internist.

Welcome. When my mom was diagnosed she continued to see the neurologist every 6 months for just over a year, in addition to her pcp. When I asked about the purpose of the appointments the neurologist said it was a chance to ask questions and monitor the progression. She said some people want that others just don’t come back after diagnosis. Unfortunately there is not much that can be done. We eventually stopped neurology appointments and she only sees the pcp at her assisted living. In my opinion stick with what is working for you, especially if a change means a longer trip for you and your mom.
