Caro_Lynne, a floating river or float stream is one that is good for float trips. You get a canoe, kayak, or flat-bottomed boat and float down the river. You spend two hours, all day, or a week fishing, swimming, camping, bird watching, looking up at hundred-foot bluffs, whatever. You paddle hard through the rapids, and just loaf along the placid stretches of water. The easy way is to rent a canoe from an outfitter by the river, who takes you to a good "putting in" place early in the morning and picks you up at a prearranged downstream location at the end of the day. I haven't done that in years, but I loved it when I was younger and my shoulders weren't full of arthritis.

    Good night, friends.

eaglemom - using your town as a filming location is annoying. Filming for Milk (the movie about Harvey Milk) used a lot of locations in the Castro in San Francisco when I was still living there. Ugh. I was glad when they finished. But since he was known as "the mayor of Castro Street", it made sense to film there.

I'm sorry about your eyes. It sounds really painful.

Hi tigersmom - it's good to see you here. I'm so sorry about your husband. I followed your story somewhat, and it really was shocking at how quickly he declined. I know what you mean about this site being a lifeline, it was for me too. I got so much good advice.

Caro_Lynne - I'm originally from southern California, moved to central CA for high school, and then northern CA as an adult. My s.o. and I spent more than 20 years in San Francisco, and we're now in WA state, not too terribly far from Seattle. Close enough that we can go to the goth clubs there. 🙂

I found my way here when my younger sister was diagnosed in 2018 with Alzheimer's, Primary Progressive Aphasia, and FTD. She passed away in March, 2024.

    Carl - yummm, Mexican food.

It got up to 90 degrees here - quite warm for PNW standards. Still, it's really nice out and very green. I love this time of year. It's 8pm now, and my phone tells me it's 84 degrees, so the temp is coming down a bit.

    Good Morning,

Caro, Alabama girl here who lives on 40 acres in the country, inherited land from my parents/grandparents. This land has been in my family for over 100 years. In my youth it was a dairy and row crop farm. I still lease part of the land to my neighbor whose Mother was my Sunday School teacher. This year we have cotton and soybeans planted.

I cared for my late FIL with dementia after losing my DH, his only son and relative. I've remarried a country boy with whom I "went steady" in the 8th grade. DH came with 23 grands and great-grands. Plus, goats and chickens. I supplied the two Great Pyrenees/Anatolian Shepards, lol.

Welcome Tiger. I followed your story and I am sorry for your loss. I'm a retired RN and my heart just hurt for you.

I've got to rush this morning as one of the great grands had a tonsillectomy yesterday and we are babysitting today. I had fun shopping for "treats". I've got ice cream, popsicles, applesauce, jello, pudding and all sorts of juices.

DD's AC got fixed. There was indeed a leak. She is filing with her insurance, so we'll see if I get any of my $ back. Yay if we do. OK if we don't.

OK, y'all have a good day and I'll TTYL.

    Good morning

welcome to the porch Tiger’s mom. There’s always empty rockers on our porch.

Caro_Lynne thank you for bringing up this new topic, it’s interesting. I’m 67 years old and I was born in Grayson Kentucky. I lived there until I was seven years old and then we moved to Ohio. I live about halfway between Columbus and Cleveland, so I’m in North Central Ohio. I am a single, retired respiratory therapist. I live in a small town now, but was raised in the country on a small farm. Today it be what people call Homesteads. We raised corn, hay, strawberries, Christmas trees and beef cattle. I enjoyed living in the country and miss it, but never felt it was practical for me as a single person. I do like to raise flowers, tomatoes and herbs but have cut back trying to enjoy it more and work less. I enjoy going to church.

    Greetings porch people.

It's supposed to be hot and humid here. I live a stone's throw from where Washington crossed the Delaware— midway between Philadelphia and Princeton. It's suburban with a small-town feel.

Jerilynn— I hope you can recoup some of the cost of that repair from the insurance company. The pups are handsome; will they be staying? Will you have puppies soon?

Judith— Good for you on the culling of the paperbacks. DH has been working on "making room" in his library. So far there are piles on the desk and floor (It's getting cramped for sewing and Pilates, dude) but he hasn't pulled the trigger on them yet. He treats books with great reverence and will want to find them "good homes". He did donate a lot of his math collection to the local community college and checks on occasion that it is still there. It is. He likes Better World Books as they deliver books to underserved places, but the donation boxes are always full and then I end up driving around with boxes of books in my trunk. I'd like to donate them the Project Home's thrift store. They have an amazon store that sells used books like the kind DH tends to have but DH hasn't agreed yet. I have a threat— my entire family gifts him amazon gift cards for his birthday and Christmas— I'll tell him I'll let them shop for whatever they think he'd like. FTR, he has almost $600 in GCs at the moment.

Lorita— I don't think Sears is really Sears anymore. Back in the day, when I was trying to establish credit they turned me down. The reason had to do with not being stable (i.e. unmarried). I was in college and working part time, but I was making decent money. They did extend credit to my married sister and her husband who together earned about the same as me but were deemed a more stable risk. My idiot BIL still isn't "stable". And my sister declared bankruptcy after they separated. I can carry a grudge as if it had handles; I've never shopped there.

Eagle— I am sorry about your dry eye diagnosis. I sometimes feel like people who've never suffered this particular malady don't quite understand how miserable it is. I hope you can get some relief on this sooner rather than later.

I've been on prescription drops (I started on Restasis but use Xiidra currently) since menopause. They are very expensive; prior to Medicare, I was paying a couple hundred dollars co-pay for 90-days.

I suspect it might be an autoimmune thing for me. My issue is more of a tear quality problem. The little glands that secrete oil into the tears don't function properly. In addition, I to drops, I do a 10-minute heated mask daily to help with the MGD part. I've also had the glands expressed which is weird in a barbaric sense, but soothing.

Tigersmom— Welcome to the porch. I'm happy to see you here.

I do recall the story of what you and your DH went through and I felt so badly for you both reading it then.

Loveskitties— It's nice to hear from you. I don't crochet, but I do enjoy my daily NYT crossword. Monday and Tuesday, which are really easy, I try to do them on the downs or acrosses only to make them more of challenge.

Ron— I'm glad you're getting out. And to have lunch with a TV personality, no less.

Carl— Thanks for the movie rec— DH and I enjoyed Hidden Figures last night. I've done float trips on the Delaware north of here— the outfitter offers a 3 or 6-hour trip. My favorite part is the vastly overpriced hot dog lunch one can purchase just north of BSA Treasure Island (birthplace of Order of the Arrow). DS was lucky enough to camp there a couple times before flooding closed it permanently.

Gothic G— Filming in your hometown is a PITA. M Night Shyamalan films locally. "Signs" took over the town for weeks with bored housewives hoping for a peak at Mel Gibson. DS missed an appointment with his psychologist because neither the psych nor us could get anywhere near the office which was across the street from the pizza shop scene. FWIW, that is not only the worst pizza in town— it's take'n'bake, aka raw, so they had to bring it in from elsewhere. My niece had problem as well. She was trying to take a summer class at DelVal College which is where the corn field scenes were done. DS was attending a lab school in Princeton at the time; the filming of Beautiful Mind made getting around there a challenge, too. DS said he saw Crowe flip someone the bird on one of their trips to the library.

I made a plan yesterday with mom for her to walk to the pool before it got too warm, and I would pick her up around 3pm. She did it. The pool was almost empty, but she enjoyed it anyway. When I walked out to the pool, she was on the far side napping and for all the world looked dead. This is not a first for me, but it's still an awful feeling.

Have a nice day all of you.

Morning, Shirley (ElyVet) posted on 207. You all need to read her post. She is now on a farm.

Already hot and humid here. I plan on staying inside except to fill the water tank - takes a trip out to turn it on and another to turn it off. I need to call Bryon to moe. A lot of the early grass in the yard has died but what is left is tall. I hate to walk through.it because of the possibility of a snake and ticks for sure. I have already had four on me this year.

Had a fight with Lilly getting her meds down but she came and sat on my lap afterwards and we made up.

I agree HB, Sears is not what it used to be. I think there may be a store in Tulsa but not a lot of them left. Did Sears buy out K Mart.? Seems like most of the older established Department stores in the town where I worked are gone..

I think Sears did buy out KMart (nee Kresge). Now Craftsman tools are sold at Home Depot and Sears is no more. KMart was the worst store ever. Things were scrambled like a rummage sale, you couldn't find what you wanted, and there was no one to ask.

Credit cards were hard to get back in the day, and unmarried women were hardly people. My in-laws built a house for an unmarried woman who rented and saved her money for decades to pay cash, because the banks wouldn't make a mortgage without a man's name on the note.

It rained this morning and it's very humid. Thank goodness for AC!

Thanks to those who posted about their origins; it was fun to learn where we are all from!

Thank you Carl for explaining floating rivers, once you described it, the name makes perfect sense. One year during our trip to Gatlinburg we took a day trip and went white water rafting down the Nantahala River. Guess that's similar but without splashy water and bumpy waves.

HB my LO was born in and lived in Philly until he moved to Florida when he was in his late 20's. He kept in touch with a few friends from his childhood and they still reach out to me to see how I'm doing. I enjoyed our trips to Philly; so much history.

Judith so glad to see you posting and glad you are feeling better.

JeriLynn that's lots of acres; no wonder you are always so busy. I have a difficult time keeping the weeds off my patio between the pavers and it's only approx. 2000 sq.ft. I also didn't know your DH and now you have 23 grands. I have 3; 22-girl, 21-boy and 9-girl. The oldest got married last month. The youngest one visited last week. She loves doing projects. I am still finding glitter all over the house!

I believe Iris is also from CA and is currently on a trip to Sweden. Hope you are having a great time!

Hope you resolve you fridge issue soon Lorita.

GG, if I remember correctly you went to visit friends where one has dementia. If so, have they made any progress on getting assistance?

Hello to everyone on the porch xo

Back again. My little post op tonsillectomy patient is doing well. I fed her some jello and Tylenol since her Mother hadn't given her anything for pain since just after surgery yesterday. 🙄 Knocked her out for a good nap. She's since had pudding, jello, mashed potatoes, mac-n-cheese and lots of gatoraid. Prime Video movie treat "How to Train Your Dragon" is playing for her now. She's a sweet kid, just needs a little more structure in her young life.

DH is bush hogging in the pastures. He worked on the barn at Huntland while it was cooler this morning.

We no longer have a Sears store here either. Sad. I remember the days of the Sears & Roebuck Christmas Catalog and hoping I had been "good enough" that Santa would bring all the things from the dog-eared pages I had marked, lol.

Now that I'm almost 69 I've reached the stage, as DH says, "you're old enough now your "wants" don't hurt so much".

HB, those canines belong to DD and granddaughter and they have gone home. No more "permanent" dogs in the house for me but I imagine we will continue to periodically have "grand-dog visitors". This granddaughter is absolutely over the top with her dog. She got home from school yesterday and asked me if I had told the dog I loved him while she was gone. No m'am, I didn't. I DID tell him if he continued to chew on my peacock pillow on the couch that he would be crated until she returned.

Good news: found out today DD will be receiving a check from her insurance company. She told me "this is how much I'm getting!". No Sweetie, you will be keeping what's left after you pay me back. That's my camping $. lol

I have my Women's Meeting at church tonight. Gotta go iron my white, ankle length, fringed Chico's jeans. This one is for you HB, lol.

Welcome, Tiger Mom! The porch is a friendly place. Glad you are here!

I'm from Iowa. I have lived here all my life. I had a wonderful childhood. I grew up in a town of 400 and it was bike riding, horses, swimming, fun with cousins, going to the aunt and uncle's farm….horse shows and eventually graduation. I went to nursing school. I'm an RN, BSN, MSN but am retired and let my nursing license lapse. I met my hubby at community college (part of my nursing education). We've been married almost 49 years (October 2). I love gardening and travel and spending time with my grandkids and adult children. I have a miniature schnauzer named Josey. I have 2 children and 8 grandchildren.

The porch is a wonderful place. We listen, we lift each other up, we teach and learn and we talk about our lives.

    Hugs to all, Beth

    Good afternoon—

That's interesting Carolynne. Philadelphia can be a lot of fun if you know where to look. Where did your DH grow up? Philly's a real city of neighborhoods that used to function like small towns. If you ask where folks are from, they'll tell you the neighborhood or parish even if they're not Catholic. When I worked, I was in South Philadelphia, Holmesburg, and Overbrook and it might as well have been 3 different countries.

Jerilynn— Well aren't you the fancy-pants. I always growl about some of Chicos things being over-designed (Talbots, too) but I will say they offer some of the nicest quality knit shirts available. They don't shrink, lose shape of fade. I appreciate that the sleeves tend to be a little longer than most. I treated myself to 2 tees there last week— a cadet blue square neck and a black notch-neck tee.

    _______________________________________________________________________________________

Dinner's a chicken pot pie from the farm stand. Before that goes into the oven, I need to transfer the contents of my old wallet into a new one I got yesterday. I think I've been toting the same French purse style since DS was a baby. OMG, it holds a checkbook and register.

I should check my BP again. My PCP switched me out again because I'm not tolerating a diuretic. The new one makes me kind of dizzy for a while after I take it. This morning my BP was 148/59 which is just nuts. I'll give a couple days and reach out if things don't improve.

    Good afternoon Porch Rockers.

Caro. Yes im in Arizona. I have only been here for 1 year. I was in Oregon, my DH, passed away 6 years ago. I moved to Arizona, to live with our DD and SIL. I don't like the heat, but I enjoy living with them. I was born 79, years ago in Sacramento, California. My second marriage moved me to Oregon. I'm retired from the hospitality industry, I booked reservations and some auditing for a resort in central Oregon. I love pets, I have a 11 year old chiuacha, her name is Molly, then a 4 year old cat his name is Sammy. My daughter has a dog name Fiona and 2 cats Timmy and Lilly.

Ron. I remember Minnie Pearl. She was funny. Has your home arrived yet?

JeriLynn. I remember the Sears and Roebock, catalog. I also spent a lot of time turning those corners.

My DD and I will be going to yoga tonight. We are cutting back the active yoga, and just doing the stretching/relaxing yoga. I think the active yoga, is bothering my hips. We would love to be able to take the dogs for a walk. But it's too hot when we get up and still hot when we go to bed.

    Hugs to all, Zetta

Zetta, I was channel surfing' the other day and came across a show where they were teaching yoga. Looks kind of hard to me. Can you do that thing where you stand on one leg with your other foot against your knee? If I tried that I would fall over. I think I've mentioned I tried Tai Chi along with a show on tv. I liked it but I was so sore. You would those slow movements wouldn't make you sore.

It's hot here today, 94 with best index of 104 and 55% humidity. Not pleasant but there is a breeze.

The grasshoppers are eating things.. Have a pretty. White Rose.of Sharon and a purple one and they have almost eaten all the leaves and left the buds but will eat the flowers when they bloom. I dusted them with Sevin so hope it helps. They ate all the huge leaves on the Royal Empress tree, a new one. They're about 1.5" lnches long now. Do wish they would eat weeds.

Shirley, glad you posted and let us know you're a farm girl again. Sounds like you're enjoying it. Nothing like farm.life, is there? Were you there early enough to make a garden? How many sheep and goats do you have? I know the kids are enjoying learning about the animals and naming them. I name ours, too.Post when you have time and let us know how it's going.

Lorita. No I'm not in that class, it must be advanced yoga. Were in beginners yoga, and I have a hard time at times doing the poses. The relaxing and stretching class is good. We use blankets, pillows and mats. We get into a stretching position and relax that way for about 10 minutes. It's usually 10 positions. While we are doing this the instructor burns relaxing incense, and also plays on the singing bowls. It's a very relaxing sound. Stretching is good. 😂

That does sound relaxing, Zetta. I ordered cat broth thinking it was what I ordered before that was in little bowls. What I.got today was in pouches and you can't get the bits of meat out. What brand is it that comes in the little bowls - can't seem to locate them.

I bought a suit from Sears & Sawbuck when I was 17. They had a traveling batch of semi-custom suits where men had been measured and ordered suits but then not bought them when they were done; they were sending the suits from one Sears store to another in hope that they would sell. I found one that fit me perfectly, right down to the right sleeve being an inch longer than the left and bought it for about $20. About the same time, they had a pair of boots with one boot marked size 12 and the other marked size 10, but both were size 12 and I bought the pair for half price. I was going to school and earning about $1 per hour for part-time work in those days, and I was a serious bargain hunter.

My father had a Sears credit card, and late that summer he sent me to Sears with two of my younger brothers to buy them school clothes while he and Mom were at work. He gave me the card to use and his car to drive, but the things we tried to buy maxed out the card so they sent us to the credit office. An unpleasant woman there was quite offended that I was using the card without being on their records as an "authorized user" and tried to humble me, but I just repeated "I'll tell my father what you said" with a poker face and watched her become more and more frustrated. Good times.

HB, I know he must have told me 1,000 times! I believe it was NE Philly. His family was Jewish and I can't remember the name of the high school but do remember him telling me there were like 2,000 in his graduating class! His father owned a luncheonette in Center City that catered to the office building staff and visitors.

After my LO moved to Florida, his parents sold the luncheonette, moved to Florida, and bought a condo on the ocean. LO's dad was not very nice to him Story for another day xo

JeriLynn - My parents always shopped at Sears, and I vividly remember the Christmas catalogs. We spent a lot of time going through them. We also got all of our beginning of the school year things there too. I can't remember the last time I saw an actual brick and mortar Sears.

Caro_Lynne - Thank you for remembering them. I'm pretty worried. The one who has Alzheimer's is 88, and his husband just turned 90. There is no Plan A, and certainly no Plan B. The one without dementia is in active denial. I'm very gently bringing up issues …. I know he's afraid, and I don't blame him, but ignoring it is not going to make it go away. I've made suggestions and I've made sure he knows he can call me anytime, even in the middle of the night, but I'm giving him plenty of space to just come to terms with everything.

Zetta - I love those singing bowls.

HB - It sounds like Philadelphia is like San Francisco in that each of the neighborhoods have their own personalities. The Castro is very different than The Haight, which is very different than The Mission, etc. A lot of these neighborhoods have their own street fairs too. The Castro Street Fair is typically the first weekend in October, while the Folsom Street Fair is at the end of September. I was going to link to the wikipedia pages for these fairs, but after I scanned the page for the Folsom Street Fair I thought better of it. 😄 It is definitely not safe for work.

Lorita - Your grasshoppers are scaring me. I can withstand all matter of horror film grossness, but put a grasshopper in front of me and I'm grossed out for days.

We've got family visiting with us now - they just got here and are staying through the weekend. They're from L.A. and the light is messing with them. The sun sets here around 9pm, but sets an hour earlier in L.A. They're like, "this is wrong!" We're entertained.

    Morning,

HB, when I was still working, the "Traveler Collection" at Chico's was a staple for me. Worked well with airplanes/travel/ease of care. I also still like their tanks. Worked really well with business suits, but now I wear them under tops that are a little too low cut. I agree with you about the overly styled looks prominent there.

Last evening's Women's Meeting was enjoyable. We've planned our service activities for the remainder of the year.

My patient went home yesterday fed, medicated and rested. Now to restore the guest room, lol.

I did manage to do all the cooking for the Scottsboro trip yesterday so TODAY is mani/pedi day for me! I'll do some house cleaning before I go.

Sunday's menu for my friend's visit will be a simple summer lunch. Chicken salad croissants, fruit and banana pudding. Maybe a potato salad too. Easy peasy. I'm excited to see her.

Good morning. The weather here today should be glorious. Sunny and in the low 80s.

Lady Z— Yoga isn't supposed to hurt. My favorite You Tube yogi operates under the principal of "find what feels good". It sounds like your stretching/relaxation is the better fit for you. Smart of you to recognize that.

Lorita— IME, slow movement and static poses can be really work your body in ways it's not usually challenged. I'm not surprised you really felt the tai chi.

Carl— Years ago, dad had a customer who worked at Botany 500; her job was sewing labels into suits. She was the only person on the floor who knew which suits would carry their label and which would be labeled Sears. You may have gotten an even better deal than your knew.

I am always amazed by how breezy stores are about credit cards even now. I carry mom's Mastercard and have never been questioned. Ever. How ironic that Costco is more vigilant about my identity than any of the places I use her card.

Gothic G— That's the thing that I think people who've always lived rural, suburban or small-town miss about big cities. I would say that, say South Philadelphia, was at least as tightly knit as even small communities.

You friend sounds very like my mom in the first 8 years of dad's dementia; her ability to not see her reality was both stunning and terrifying.

Carolynne— Ah, the Northeast. I lived in the Northeast as a preschooler. Your DH likely graduated from either Washington (far Northeast) or Northeast (Greater Northeast) closer to the city might have been Lincoln (my dad went there); both had massive graduating classes in the late 1960s and 1970s.

DH and I have skin checks later. We'll pick mom up from the pool if she decides to go. The pot pie last night was smaller than it looked and not very good. It was awfully dry— there was almost no gravy. Live and learn I guess.

Tonight will be BLTs. I got some lovely tomatoes from Lancaster. Maybe some fruit salad to go with.

Bestie just called. She's having chest pains and a crazy high BP. I convinced her to go to the hospital. I wish she would have agreed to an ambulance. Ugh.

Morning, already very hoy and sticky. I got up just after six, put on long sleeves , gloves. Mask snd.boots and sprayed the area where the prickly Pests and poke is. Sprayed almost two Gallons of Round Up on it, then dumped about a quart on them. I hope it works. Last year I sprayed weeds in the lot and it killed thrm. Maybe in the morning I can spray the blackberry vines that are taking over the tub and chute. Even though it was cooler and not too sunny I.got pretty.hot.

While I was out there a little calf came out of the barn ca!ling his mother,-probably hungry. I think the girls are in the south pasture because I heard him calling as he went that direction. The whole 130 acres is.now.open for grazing. Kind of worries me thinking a baby could be asleep or brand new and if the herd moved he might not know where they are. The house, barn and out buildings are in the middle of all five pastures but if you're in one pasture you can't see but two others so they could get lost. We never grazed more than two or three at one time. One of the pastures, 35 acres, we used as a meadow but Mike uses it as pasture. Most.of you all know that I am a worrier, just in my DNA.

Last night and this morning I put Lilly's Amoxicillin in some cat soup and she ate it. Now for the Prednisone. Everyone is asleep again. Stormy went out with me to make sure I was okay but he's sleeping now, too.

Talked with Bryon last night and he will mow this weekend. His son, about 16 or 17, had a wreck and broke two bones in his neck so he won't be with him. Need some more hot tea but will.be back later. Stay cool!

up and determined to work in the library…I am getting rid of all old paperbacks and checking for first editions….months ago I foun a book that was not values at $130…all first edition are separated out…some hardbacks will go to the library.

    I had spaghetti for breakfast…lol

So I will join in the background sharing…I grew up in Lake Forest just north of Chicago. We waited for the Christmas catalog from Marshall Field's in which Aunt Holly and Uncle Mistletoe delighted us with gift selections.

We rode our bikes everywhere and could be out and about on them all day. We played in ravines and lived days on the beach. We took the train downtown to museums, the sympathy, the ballet on a regular basis.

My mother ordered the groceries to be delivered and the milkman put fresh milk into our frig. I did Brownies, Girl Scouts and sleep over camp in Wisconsin 2 months every summer. We ice skated, swam, played tennis, danced ,went to the library and took piano lessons. Life was fun and busy and we were really pretty independent. The big rule was to be at the table at diner time.

You know it's amazing our different our.lives were according to where we grew up. Most of those things, except bike riding, would have been foreign to the kids I grew up with. We worked in the garden and fields, took care of our animals and went to school. Most of us didn't live close together so if we didn't have siblings we played alone except when smeone stayed overnight.

No beaches in Oklahoma except on lakes. We all had ponds and if we lived in the country, that's where we swam or fished.I never learned to swim. Ponds had mud bottoms and all I did was walk along the edges.

No summer camps except some Churches had a summer camp at Falls Creek for a week or so. I remember the Sears & Roebuck and Montgomery Wards catalogs and how good the candy looked.

Most didn't have indoor plumbing until later years so old catalogs sometimes made their way to the out houses for a couple of reasons - reading material for one. You can guess the other reason. Very interesting how different our youth was and even our adult lives. Hoe about on the coasts and the deep south?
