GG, movies are better with alcohol, because that dumbs you down to the level of the target audience. It's hard to suspend disbelief and enjoy the show when you see all the errors. Like when you're watching a Western and one of the Indians is wearing sunglasses. I loved the first season of "LA Law" because it was funny, but my attorney colleagues hated it. They told me "That isn't what law practice is like" and I said "I know that. If I thought law practice was all about being oversexed and overpaid, I would have gone to law school."
I'm not much into scary movies. I much prefer shows like "Mystery Science Theater 3000" in which the characters watched drive-in movies and made fun of them. That one was better with beer, too.

We're back home, safe and sound. Darwin came over and helped me get Sheena in the car. The place was already hoppin' when we got there-'no surprise.
Sheena got her nails trimmed, both had their ears checked. They were all clean so guess I did all right with that. But they got antibiotics in them, then both got allergy shots. Sheena's hygromas were okay.
Lilly got an allergy shot, no fleas for her so Vectra worked. When Sydney and I ott back out to the car, Stormy got in, then so did Sheena! She doesn't want to get in when we're home because that means going somewhere but she is ready to come home from the vets.
Got probiotics for the GPs, Prrdnisone for both and Amoxicillin and Prednisone for Lilly. Total was $250. I don't have to pay when I go to the doctor so guess it evens out. They are certainly worth it.
Called Dawn to tell him we got home and he had just gotten home, too. He went into town and got groceries. Says he is thinking about going fishing this afternoon. He said he followed me out the way I went. I saw lights about a mile behind but didn't know it was him. I think he passed me on the highway, anyway it was a white GMC pickup with a short, wide bed.
tt. Mint, I chopped corn and cotton with daddy and talked his ears off asking questions. I loved to watch him chop corn and cotton. I had a favorite hoe with a narrow blade but no idea what happened to it.
You all were uptown having a corn picker. That really made it easier, didn't it? I can remember riding on top of the cotton in a trailer on our way to the gin. Back then all little towns had cotton gins. None around here now but, no cotton either. Crops changed to soybeans and wheat and mostly pasture lands and meadows. I miss seeing fields of corn and cotton-'really pretty crops. Sunny, hot and humid here today. Places south of us had 3" of rain last night. Gotta go turn off water

Afternoon Rockers
Hope you’re all staying cool today. It’s hot, humid with afternoon storms predicted every day this week.
Where cotton plants washed out at my place now has beans coming up, so not a total loss. I do imagine those with crop insurance will be filing claims come fall harvest time.
My housework is done and I’ve got a 12 pound turkey roasting on the grill so the house doesn’t get hot. My daughter is waiting on the AC man at her house, uggh! He promises to get there today (thank goodness DH knows every kind of tradesman). If they can’t get cooled off enough by bedtime I expect they will come here with the 2 dogs. I’m going to make them dinner regardless.
Y’all please come to my house if you like cucumber/squash!! We are abundantly blessed. @Mint my cherry tomatoes are making!!! I’m excited.Ok, I’m gonna throw some cold salads together for dinner. TTYL

Oh, those are great additions to the scariest movie list. I watched It last weekend…still a bit frightening. Stephen King's stuff always frightening…think Gujo. I now remember that I used to read Poe when i was a child,
Will try to find Hellraiser.
Carl…you are so right. I will stick to cooking..far less effort.
Lorita …..you might try getting Stormy and yourself in the car and see if Sheena will join you.
My best gardening story. We were in St Louis and the grands were little. They showed us where a pumpkin was growing next to their patio. The vine was the result of seeds tossed from pumpkins being carved. Dick had a brilliant idea and we were off to the market where he found baby pumpkins (probably meant for decoration). When the girls got home from school lo and behold they found at least a dozen new pumpkins on their vine. Proof that some people can can just toss seeds and they will grow.
added; found Hellraiser…nope, not watching…could not get past 5 minutes…lol

Good afternoon. It's calm and sunny here ahead of days of unsettled weather. We're under a flashflood warning. Worst case scenario, I can't get to mom's house for several hours without driving into NJ and taking US 1 back into PA.
Gothic G— Your English exchange student should see what we do with bananas. I recall spending a semester in London and being intrigued by them cutting up burgers; they're kind of missing the whole point.
DS had a lot of nits to pick with Jurassic Park as well but not so many that the new one isn't on his radar.
Judith— I think women of a certain age presenting at the ED with something other a gunshot wound are going to be tested for a UTI. You're going to get your troponin levels (recent heart damage) checked as well. Mom's cardiologist went to the ED where he works for IV fluids when he had COVID last year. They insisted on checking his troponin levels and wouldn't take no for an answer even though he presented his credentials and told them he wasn't having a heart attack.
Carl— As scary as Jaws was, 2 books describing the events upon which the story is loosely based are even scarier. The one beach is precisely where DH and I used to go before DS was born.Twelve Days of Terror: Inside the Shocking 1916 New Jersey Shark Attacks: Fernicola M.D., Richard G.: 9781493023240: Amazon.com: Books
My bestie is a card carrying MSTie. She even travels for live events and brought them themed cookies. She has this decal on the rear window of her minivan (not her car).
Lorita— It sounds like the vet visit went well.

DH and I just got back from mom's. He installed her new battery-operated closet lighting; this is going to be helpful. With her AMD she needs a lot of light to see. Storms later here.

Good afternoon everyone.
All i remember about shelling dry corn, is after awhile it would hurt this city boy's hands.
Saturday was arena football, Sunday was Superman movie and today sign papers and pick up the camper. Might take a few days before everything is hooked up, but at least I can start putting stuff away.

HB, I used to see a car in downtown KC with the license plate MST3K. I guess the driver was a fan too.
I just finished a Washington Post article about the Guadalupe River flood. Apparently it is customary in some circles to spend $7,600 for one's daughter to spend 4 weeks in a cabin on the bank of a river that routinely floods, and it is not unusual for girls to be trapped in their cabins so that meals are delivered by canoe. The flood we had this year broke the old record by only one foot, so it was predictable. And the people who ran Camp Mystic were warned of a dangerous flood a full hour before they decided to evacuate. I know it's always easy to quarterback on Monday, but what were they thinking?

HB. The vet visit was okay. Got to visit s bit with Mike and Sidney. He really has the girls who work there trained well. The visit wiped us out so all of us took a good nap. They are still asleep. !
My scary movie was The Shining and I could not read Pet Cemetery - I think it's spelled with an S.
Ordered groceries when I.got home so they will arrive in an hour or so. I am out of yogurt,- can't have that!
You tomato growers better get on the ball,- just heard there is now a 21% tariff on Mexican tomatoes!
Csrl, I have tried everything getting Sheena in the Equinox. She would get in the Mercury just fin. She has gotten in this car twice so I know she can. When I drive to the mailbox Stormy usually goes so I will start taking her so she doesn't associate getting in the.csr with a vet vidit. She is a bit stubborn. Stormy weighs a little.over 97 lbs. And Sheena weighs a little over 87 lbs. So both of them together are a handful although they do walk well on leashes. I may start getting up at 6 and taking them for a walk. Well, maybe!
As we went into the Clinic a man wss carrying a big dog with a shield thing on. I asked if the dog was okay and he said he was stubborn and wouldn't walk! Quite an adventure over there. Saw a huge wolf mix once and he was very calm. Hope you all are well today. Hot week.coming up in Oklahoma.
Ron, shelling corn by hand is hard on hands, especially the thumb!

Mint - about the UTIs - yay, something to look forward to as I age.
Lorita - it sounds like everything went well at the vet, getting all of the antibiotics, prednisone and all.
Carl - Yes! to Mystery Science Theater 3000! That's exactly how those movies should be watched. And yes, some movies need alcohol to make them watchable. Years ago my s.o. and I watched Starship Troopers on the recommendation of a couple of friends. OMG, what a terrible movie, and yeah, we got that it was a satire. It just wasn't a very good satire. I liked the scorpion-like bugs - and I've always said they deserved a better movie. It took us a half pitcher of margaritas to get through it.
Judith - Nobody here needs to see Hellraiser! You'd probably get through the first five minutes, but certainly not the first ten. After seeing it at a theater, I was surprised it got made, it was fairly subversive - also, fairly gory and gross.
HB - I'm with your DS, although I won't be seeing new Jurassic Park. Even the prospect of Jonathan Bailey, with his slutty little glasses and hotness, isn't enough to tempt me. I watched the trailer, which looks good, but they lost me when they described mosasaurs and pterosaurs as dinosaurs. They're not. And since that seems to be a major plot point, it would just bug me throughout the movie. I'm game for the Walking With Dinosaurs TV show that Lorita is watching. I know there's a pterosaur episode and I can't wait to watch it.
Okay, now it's back to doing my deep-cleaning of the house. The kitchen floor is so clean now that I could have a dinner party on it.

I saw "Starship Troopers" because I loved the book, which was published when I was about 13 years old. I thought the movie was a pretty faithful rendering of the book, but I didn't much enjoy the movie because I am no longer an adolescent boy, the target audience.
I saw the "Lone Ranger" movie with Johnny Depp as Tonto. I had heard it was awful, but I loved the Lone Ranger on radio and TV when I was a child and just had to go. A half pitcher of margaritas would have made that one a lot better too.
There are some good movies. If any of you hasn't seen "Hidden Figures" I highly recommend it.

Yes…. a good movie.
Just finished Tender is the Night movie(Fitzgerald novel) Jason Robards again. It was not very good and received poor reviews but I was too lazy to read the book….sigh

added… just got all lab reports via my computer…culture was done…troponin test done too

Long day. Think I will Watch Rachel Maddow and Lawrence O'Donnel and go to bed.. Glad they did the culture Judith. Good night.

Carl - Hidden Figures has been on my list for awhile now. Maybe we'll find it for the weekend. There are tons of great movies out there. Two of my favorites are Blade Runner and Brazil. I can't remember who said it, but there's a saying that good science fiction holds up a mirror for us to see society (or words to that effect). I felt like Brazil, and especially Blade Runner, did that. I will say that I appreciated the "Odessa Steps" sequence in Brazil.
I avoid Johnny Depp whenever possible - although I enjoyed him in The Nightmare on Elm Street, probably because he didn't last that long. 😈
Judith - I never saw the movie, but I read the book (Tender is the Night).
0 -
Movies: Scary? Nope. Sci-Fi? Nope. Hidden Figures was great. Lonesome Dove is my all-time favorite. The Horse Whisperer is up there. Second Hand Lions is good. I seem to be drawn to themes of Good over Evil and Redemption - even if there are unhappy circumstances.
DD's AC is repaired for a mere $600. It seems the trouble began after her father cut her grass. He seems to lack understanding of the concept of mowing with the contents blowing AWAY from the house and peppered her AC unit with rock and debris. There was absolutely no freon in the unit. SO, after this discovery, the AC unit may have to be replaced if the freon leaks out again. Thank goodness she added a home maintenance policy to her insurance after the last episode when he "tinkered" with her hot water heater and ruined it and broke her fence with the mower as well. I have advised she not allow him to be "the handyman". Ugh.
My turkey on the grill was delicious. The girls came for dinner after the AC repairs.
Hot again here today @ 96* with heat index rising to 105 Wednesday/Thursday. At least I don't have to cook today. There is another pile of cucumbers on the kitchen counter. Not sure if we will can more or what. The corn is looking really good and I hope it makes.
DH's SIL is now being medicated for comfort around the clock for Stage 4 cancer. She is at home with family. I'm really glad we took her the cobbler and she had the chance to enjoy it. I like her and I pray she passes peacefully.
Time to get up from here and get busy. Stay safe today.

good morning
JeriLynn glad you got to visit with your sister-in-law. Prayers that she is blessed to be at peace in this phase of life.

Good morning. We've got unexpected sun after a stormy evening. I'll take it.
Judith— Glad the hospital did right by you with the culture (and their darlings the troponin levels). It's funny, with mom's first UTI he BP was really, really high. Six months later with the second one, it was so low I have to wheel her into the ED. UTIs are tricky like that. Sometimes, they only reach out if the abx prescribed wasn't the best option for your specific infection.
The story about the little pumpkins is charming. It reminds me of something my mom's MD neighbor did. She had a butterfly bush along the property line and his wife enjoyed the visits from the local butterfly population and was sad when it was over for the season. To cheer her up he covered the shrub with small "florist" butterflies. Mom got back from FL and was very confused.
Carl— Thanks for the head's up about Hidden Numbers; DH had been wanting to see it. He loves a movie where STEM triumphs. Math being his hobby which is arguably odd. At dinner Saturday he and his friend were geeking out over the story about comedian Jack Back's mom completing the code for NASA's LEM Abort Guidance System which saved the Appollo 13 astronauts while in labor with her son.
Jerilynn— I do hope your DH's SIL has a gentle exit from this world. I'm sure she appreciated her cobbler-time with you.
Ugh. It sounds like that A/C repair was something that could have been avoided. How frustrating, and expensive, for her. When I taught DS how to mow, that was the second lesson after don't try to go up hills with a riding mower on a diagonal.
Lorita— Big dogs = big personalities. Weirdly, our old St. Bernard loved the vet whose office was just around the corner. Fred had arthritic hips and responded well to steroid injections. Evidently, the dog learned the vet meant pain relief and a couple of treats on the side. He'd get loose from time to time and visit on his own. I can't picture your Sheena dropping by for some pats and a Milk Bone.
______________________________________________________________________
My test results turned up in my inbox, too. I am not loving it. My electrolytes were low, so I will be starting a new BP medication and retesting in about 2 weeks. And my platelets are not where they should be— again— which earned me a scheduling ticket for some additional testing that can't be scheduled until mid-August. I am not loving this.
I have a telehealth visit with my endocrinologist at 1pm. This is sort of a stupid visit to have electronically, but it was his request and he'll be retiring in 2 weeks. So, of course my T3 is low again. That might explain my lowered resting heart rate. He adjusted my Synthroid dose last year after 25+ of very stable numbers. I feel OK. I'm not depressed or puffy or overly tired. And my arm is sore— warm and tender which is new. I am falling apart.
I think I need to make a plan to get mom to the pool today. If she can walk there, DS or I can collect her instead of having her walk uphill at the hotter time of day.
I hope you all have a good day.

HB, we used to have a St. Bernard named Hutch. Charles went to the gas station one day and came back with him. A young couple were at the station and were pulling a small travel trailer and just couldn't handle him any more, so Charles brought him home. At the time we had our first Poodle, Gidget. I opened the door when he got home and let Hutch out of the car and when Gidget saw him she actually screamed! But they became friends.
I think I mentioned that a new Royal Empress tree had come up and was about three feet tall with big, beautiful leaves. A few days ago I noticed the grasshoppers were eating the bottom leaves. Yesterday I remembered we user to put Sevin powder on things to keep bugs away so ordered some. Went out this morning to dust the leaves and they were all gone! Dusted the stems but don't know if it will survive. I also dusted an old Rose of Sharon by the hydrant so maybe it will be okay even though they were eating it. I wish they would eat poke and weeds and let other things alone. Also dusted the remaining Vinca in the bathtub.
I used to read a lot of science fiction but not in many years. I did notice that some things I read about then have come to pass.
So sorry about your SIL, JeriLynn. I hope they can keep her comfortable.
Time for some hot tea so will stop for now. I feel so bad about the little tree - wish I had thought about Sevin sooner. I did notice my Crepe Myrtle is blooming and a pretty, white Rose of Sharon. Guess I better dust them. Need to call Bryon to now this weekend. Sweet Darwin asked yesterday if I would like for him to bring his mower over and mow. Such a good neighbor.

@Lorita Fred came from the 7-11.
He turned up there where kids fed him junk for about a month before my father's SIL put him in her car and left him in our garage with a note that said "You said you wanted to get a big dog". He became buds with my sister's cat— they'd dig holes and swim in the creek together. The cat was pretty weird, too.1 -
I'm glad Fred found a good home and buddy. Big dogs are great. I te!l Stormy that when I brought him home he was about the size his head is now. Sheena was a year old and she raised him. Both are pushing I00 lbs. Now.
Okay you cat lovers -how do you give a cat medicine? I have two kinds to give Lilly. One is 1ml. Liquid twice a day and a Prednisone pill once daily, We just had a fight getting the liquid down. I will dissolve the tiny pill. Thinking about putting them in a little milk. Suggestions, please! I wrap the Prednisone for the GPs in cheese. Would not work for Lilly.
0 -
Putting my cat person hat on.
I find the simplest way to get medication in a feline without needing stitches, abx or a tetanus booster is to mix it into some sort of treat. Strained baby meals, chicken and turkey were what all 3 of my boys preferred. Kitten or recovery canned foods are good for hiding medication. Crush the prednisone really well and stir in the liquid. I'd do 1-2 tsp of food and do each medication separately to make sure you know how much she got of each.
If the liquid is amoxicillin in the pink suspension (if it's the same stuff they give kids, it tastes like bubblegum), Lilly might lick it up off a saucer if she likes sweet things. My himmie got amoxicillin for an abscess and would lick it off a plate with a little ice cream. He picked up a love of treats from my then preschool son.
HB1 -
Thank you, HB. The Amox is the pink stuff so I will see if she might lick it.I used to give it to barn cats with no problem. I was wrapping the Prednisone in cheese for the GPs and she was watching so wrapped hers (it is tiny oblong) in cheese and she ate it. May or may not work every time. I will try anything. Maybe mixing it in milk?
It's 84 but the hest index is already 103!! The front porch feels like an oven. We ha e been lucky so far with rain and pretty nice wrsther.but guess that big high is headed our way. It usually settles over Okla. In the summer causing a best dome.
I put the cat carrier back in the bag do I can put it away, then washed out the nozzle in the sprayer so I can spray the polk and prickly pear tonight or in the morning. Will have to mix more for the berry vines.Darwin gave me his two or three gallon sprayer but it's pretty heavy when full. Mine is only a one gallon. The girls are in the barn so will Just spray the berry vines inside the tub. Not good for the girls.
I just saw on tv that subways were flooded some where in the northeast. I would be afraid to ride them and flooding would put the icing on the cake, for me.

Loved this morning's posts!
Lonesome Dove…we actually have it! Second Hand Lions…yes! I would enjoy seeing again.

"Hidden Figures" was a jolt to me because I had forgotten over the years how pervasive and damaging segregation was back when it was the law of the land. Apollo 13 (another great movie IMO) was kind of the same. The whole team at Mission Control was white men in white shirts and ties, with cigarette packs and lighters next to their computer terminals. Apollo 13 was a STEM show too, with the engineers inventing an oxygen generator from parts available in the spacecraft and the programmer resetting the computer, but to me the best scene was when James Aldren's mother was asked if she was concerned that her son was flying home at 10,000 mph in a damaged vehicle and she said "My Jimmy is the best pilot in the world. If they could make a washing machine fly, he could land it." I can just see my mother saying something like that, scared to death but not showing it.
1 -
Loved Lonesome Dove and the follow-up ( forget the name). You know the last movie in a theater we went to see was "Signs" in 2002 and we enjoyed that one. Carl, what is a STEM movie?
0 -
STEM stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. In a STEM movie, the heroes are mathematicians and scientists, not gunfighters.
I loved Lonesome Dove also. It was on the Grit channel recently, and I have it recorded to watch when I get around to it.
1 -
Lorita— Prednisone has a kind of bitter taste. I don't think milk would be enough to mask it. Strained baby meats have a strong enough flavor to mask that. FWIW, neither of the vets I've used would suggest giving cow's milk to cats. The first breeder I got my Persian from used to give cats ricotta cheese daily; the vet said to stop it. Cat wasn't a big fan anyway.
Carl— The program used to reprogram the computer in the movie is Jack Black's mom's work handed off just after his birth.
Director Ron Howard cast his mother in the role of Blanche Lovell (Jim Lovell's mom); she stole every scene she was in. His dad and brother had credited roles in the film (as the Reverand and an engineer) and his wife and daughter had uncredited roles as well. Maybe it keeps payroll costs down.
HB0 -
Hello Porch Friends.
You guys have good memories, remembering the movies you watched. The only movie, I remember is Old Yeller, because of that movie I will never watch anything where any type of animal will be getting hurt. The only thing I like to watch, on TV is westerns or true crime.
JeriLynn. I bet that grilled turkey was delicious. I like turkey pretty much any way, but I don't think I've ever had it grilled. So sorry to hear about your SIL, she is in my prayers, for a peaceful passing. I bet she really enjoyed that cobbler.
Judith. I'm glad your test are coming back good. You must be feeling better.
HB. That was a cute story about Fred, going around the corner to visit the vet, and get a pat and a milk bone. Sorry to hear your having to deal with some test results, that were probably unexpected. Your not falling apart. I'm sure we all feel like that at times. Im having to cut back on some of the yoga. The work out yoga is hurting my back and hips. Then 2 days later I go to streach it out. So for awhile I'm passing on the one that causes me the pain.
Lorita. Hutch, had a better home with you and Charles. How can someone say they are tired of dealing with their dog. They probably would have left him on the roadside, along the way.
Giving cats medicine, if i remember awhile back you got some of the temptations cat soup I told you about. If you still get that, maybe the medicine can be hidden in that? Or maybe in a small spoon of tuna.
Hugs to all, Zetta
