Ron Howard's parents and brother were professional actors, and acting was the family business. IIRC, Ron's first role was as a swaddled infant in a movie about an American family trapped behind the Iron Curtain. Since he was about six months old, he portrayed an infant very convincingly. 😉 My guess is casting his family wasn't to keep payroll costs down but to keep the money in the family. Whatever, his mother was terrific.
If you all like science fact as well as science fiction, you might like Mary Roach's books. Mary Roach is a talented writer with a science degree, who is willing to go almost anywhere and do just about anything to research a book. In researching "Packing for Mars," a book about the space program, she drank recycled urine and rode in "The Vomit Comet," an airplane used to simulate weightlessness by making steep dives. She did even ickier things in researching her books about scientific research into death and human sexuality.
Another book I liked was "How to Live on Mars" which is full of practical, tongue in cheek tips for colonists. For example, you should buy a space suit and a car that use the same fuel so you don't freeze to death waiting for the tow truck when your car breaks down. I don't remember the author, but he used to work for NASA.

I'm with Zetta as far as Western go. I think we could watch them all day. I prefer Wagon Train and Gunsmoke. Ordered some catsoup but the brand is Delectables.instead of Temptations.
It has been a long, hot day. Probably will be.over 100 by the weekend with heat indices much higher. I'll say Good night. See.you tomorrow.

Hi again The news just gave an update on the condition of Fern, The little dog some idiot left in a garbage bin to die. The animal control people are taking care of her and today she was able to take s few steps with assistance so she is slowly improving. They are requesting help in paying for her care She is so thin but looks so sweet. It.hurts to think what she went through before she was found. I wish they could find who did that to her and do the same thing to him. He probably went home to a cool house and food to eat. There is a warm place waiting for him. You don't do harm to person or animal without paying for it.
Another news story today I.could not listen to. What I did hear before I could turn it off is they found a place with 400 dogs in horrible conditions. I don't know the details but did see !ots of crates, I.guess to take them away. I couldn't watch.

If you have Amazon Prime, "Leave it to Beaver" Season 1 is available free now. I watched the one about Beaver and his haircut; it was absolutely hilarious.
I liked "Apollo 13" too. There is a documentary about it on Netflix which I've also watched.
I am currently reading "When We flew away" by Alice Hoffman. It's a novel based on what happened to Anne Frank and her family. It is interesting; pretty sad story. The Franks were Jewish people in Germany who left and went to The Netherlands for safety. They had hopes and dreams of coming to the U.S. but that did not happen. I actually haven't read The Diary of Anne Frank but the movie is out there….several versions/made at different times…..one is free to watch on YouTube so I may watch that after finishing the book.
Hello to all.
Beth

Lorita, if you google how to pill a cat this might help. What I did was tilt the cat's head back, open the mouth wide with one hand and place the pill in the back of the mouth. Then shut the cat's mouth and hold it shut until he swallows it.

From the Nana (me) who said “NO MORE dogs in MY House”
The $600 (also mine) worth of service call and Freon at daughter’s house dissipated (most assuredly a leak) yesterday and they are at my house waiting for? repairs hopefully today.
First picture is Cash Money, the second is Flicka. Both are Heelers. Flicka is in heat.
Life is good 😊🙄🤣❤️0 -
Up and going through a few book shelves today. I think most paper backs will find there way to good will.

Good morning - it's mighty early out there. I'm just going through the news, seeing what's up here, and drinking my morning tea before I get ready to go to the gym.
For movies - I gravitate toward horror, but I'm pretty omnivorous when it comes to movies. Comedies are a favorite, silent films (Buster Keaton!), and documentaries. I'm not so big on westerns, although I really liked the late '60s western Journey to Shiloh - it starred James Caan, a very young Harrison Ford, and my crush Michael Sarrazin.
Carl - you and my s.o. said almost the same things about Starship Troopers … you read it when you were kids, liked it, thought the movie would be good. I didn't read it, so I was going in cold.
I do like Mary Roach's books!
JeriLynn - I'm glad your turkey came out well! My dad used to like to BBQ turkey, and I remember they were always good.
I'm so sorry about your SIL.
HB - this is what I always say - I'm falling apart. Thankfully many things are fixable.
Years ago we had a big dumb cat, also named Fred. Dumb, but really good-natured. Did I mention dumb? One time in our apartment complex, I was out in front, Fred was with me and a car came driving up, getting ready to park. He ran over Fred's tail. He was fine, but had tread marks for awhile. That cat.
Lorita - for cats, if I had liquid medicine for them, I'd use a syringe, worked every time. Pilling the cat? It was always a free-for-all.
I'm SO glad Fern is starting to recover.
Judith - I have to do a book culling too, and I've been avoiding it. It's so hard to get rid of books.
Alrighty, now I have to get going, I'll be back later. Monday was an hour of cardio, mostly boxing and kick boxing, and I was pretty toasty when it was all done. I think today is upper body strength training.
It's supposed to be 90 degrees here today - eeek!

Judith, sounds like you're doing well. I just tried to call Goodwill to see if they will pickup out here but didn't get an answer. Will keep trying.
JeriLynn, really nice looking Heelers. I found one at the animal shelter years ago for my parents. Rowdy turned out to be a really good friend for them. Supposed to be nice and hot today and will be for two months at least.
Update on Sears and refrigerator. I called, as requested, this morning and was told replacement has been approved but the Replacement Section doesn't have authorization yet! Told to call Friday or next week. Seems I'm not the only customer in the US and will have to wait my turn, nothing they can do. This sort of ticked me off. This is day 22' since I first called. I told the girl my age and that it is a hot Oklahoma summer. Didn't phase her. Seems everyone you talk with is in a foreign country and is not easy to understand.
Luckily, the freezer is working although it looks like a snowstorm in it. The refrigeration compartment is cool but not as much as it should be. I will cancel my credit card I've had for over 55 years and also the contract we have had for 25 years. Sears has changed so much the last few years so I would suggest not dealing with them or if you do, be careful.
We used to have two refrigerators so may get an inexpensive one from Lowes until this is settled. The second one we used to have was older and quit working and we never replaced it. I always buy multiples of items to be refrigerated so a second refrigerator would be good. I have considered a small freezer but refrigerator with freezer would be better. I learned the other day they have something that can be switched from refrigerator to freezer. Forgot how much they were. I will need to rearrange a couple of things in the utility room if I decide on this option. I will cool down and think about it.
Thanks for letting me vent. My cats and GPs let my rants go in one ear and out the other with no suggestions. Need to go out and fill the water tank. Mike opened the gate to two more pastures but I think at least some of the girls are in the barn.
Beth, I get an hour of Leave It To Beaver every day on FETV and also get Freetv. I had a fight with Lilly this morning. I need three or four hands to medicate her. I wrapped her in a towel and finally got done with only one scratch. The cheese did not work today. GG, I have liquid Amox and Prednisone is a pill I can liquify.
Better go fill the water tank and spray myself to cool off.

Good afternoon all…..
Lorita I think Sear's is just hoping you'll give up. Here's a thought. Even though they told you to call Friday or next week, personally, I'd be calling every day. Yes, its time consuming and frustrating. But they just might get tired of dealing with you and get it authorized sooner. Or even ask if you could speak with a supervisor about how long this is taking. sometimes the squeaky wheel…….
I know we've chatted about dry eyes. Mine have been so awful I've been to the ophthalmologist. I think she thought I was being dramatic at first. That is until she examined my eyes, and lower eye lids. Just as I'd said, I'm not producing any tears and my eyes feel scratchy. She could now see that. Then she did a dye test to further find out I'm making no tears. I now have prescription eye drops to use twice daily. Also I'm to use OTC allergy eye drops twice daily and lubricating drops at least four times daily. Then at night I have a jel to place on my lower lid to get moisture there during the night!!! My eyes are a full time job!! They do feel better but are very sensitive to sunlight. If it's not one thing its another it seems.
We went to downtown today and what a mess. They are filming Landman and have streets all blocked off and traffic was a mess. We tried to count the number of 18 wheeler trucks that were parked with what I assume was production items. There must have been 15 at least. And the police were everywhere. I don't even know about the show!! I was glad to sneak through a parking garage and get out of the mess.
Time to get busy here. Phone calls have to be made. Y'all be safe.

Eagle,
I'm sorry about your eyes. I know that is painful!
Landman is a great show but the language is pretty bad.
0 -
Eagle, Landman was on after Yellowstone was finished, I think. It didn't appeal to me so I didn't watch it. I agree wth JeriLynn, from the clips I did see the language was bad.
I did ask to speak with a supervisor and was told no one was there in a supervisor role. Maybe the girl was working from home. I think I will call every day- good idea. I asked her how long it would take to get it authorized and she said she had no idea, there are people all over the Country waiting to get authotized- will just have to wait.
It's 90 degrees but heat index is 107. There is some wind blowing which helps.

Good afternoon, porch people. Is there room for one more rocker? I have been following your story for quite a while, but never posted here while I was in the thick of caring for my DH. I lost him early last October, only three years and three months after he was diagnosed with mixed dementia, ALZ and VD. Stage 8 has been really difficult for me. I thought I would have more time with him. In mid-August of last year, I took him to the hospital when his agitation spiraled out of control. He stopped eating five days into that stay. He was released to memory care after 23 days, then deliberately injured himself one week later by running into the walls and was hospitalized again. Four weeks after arriving at memory care, he was dead. Some of you will know this from my posts on the spouse and partner board.
Anyway. I wanted to introduce myself and share our story. This site was a lifeline for me during my husband’s illness, because I cared for him alone. I so appreciate all the help and good advice I received. For the last 35 years, I have lived in New York City, but I grew up in Detroit. My husband was Brooklyn born and bred. That accent!
I wanted to tell Lorita that I have lived with cats for49 years, and pilled many. What is easiest are pill pockets, made by Greenie’s in salmon or catnip or chicken flavor. You can get them at Chewy or Walmart, I think. You hide the pill in there, offer it as a treat, and the cat takes it. This usually works for a while. When it doesn’t anymore, my vet advised hiding the pill in liverwurst or cheez whiz. What works for me, when all else fails, is attaching the pill to a Temptations treat with half of a pill pocket. Present it Temptations-side up. I gave a cat prednisalone this way daily for years, and he was smart. Good luck with Lilly! I like this method because it is less stressful for everybody.
I hope everyone is managing to stay cool. It is brutally hot here.1 -
Welcome Tiger mom, if you have been following us, you already know that this is a place to share memories and current situation with friends. Lorita's porch always has a extra rocker for new friends.

Hi tigersmom, glad you decided to post.. There is always room for another rocking chair on our porch.
Please accept my condolences on your loss. I know how hard it is. The adjustment takes a long time and the tears can come often. Mine still do and Charles has been gone ten years and six months.
Thanks for the suggestions. I'm getting ready to.order groceries to be delivered so will get some pill pockets. These three cats aren't really used to treats but they will learn.. I will try cheese whiz, too. It seems like she has ten feet with sharp.claws. She really is a sweet cat but she is a pill when it comes to medicine.
Come back and post often.
Hi Ron, how are things going? When do you get your new home?

Hi Tigers mom, Welcome to the front porch. This is a comforting place to be. Please come back.
Beth. I'm going to be getting that book, When We Flew Away. I have read a lot of books about Anne Frank, seen lots of movies. In 2020, my DD and SIL and myself went to Amsterdam, and visited The Anne Frank House.
JeriLynn. Those healers are beautiful, and the back of your yellow cat looks like the back of my Sammys.
Eagle. I also use OTC, eye drops, it seems like ever since I had cornia transplant, my eyes have been dry. OTC, seems to work well for me. I hope your getting good results. Dry eyes are not comfortable.
Lorita. I agree with eagle, i would call Sears every day and remind them your still waiting. My daughter uses those pill pockets daily to give Fiona, her dog, her daily pills. Fiona, loves peanut butter, so she puts that on top of each pill pocket.
I hope your all staying cool. Hugs Zetta

Eagle. forgot to comment about your dry ryes. Mine are awful. Sometimes when I wake up st night or morning it's hard to open them.. I use drops during the day.snd.night. What kind of prescription drops do you use? Have you tried that mask you hest in the microwave? I.bought one but forget to try it.I have blepharitis too and use those pads to cleanse the edges of the lids at night. I use two or three kinds of drops. My eyes are sensitive to sunlight, too. I can't use a ceiling fan, AC or fan that blows on me because it dries my eyes. It is an uncomfortable problem. What kind of allergy eye drops do you use?
Carl. I didn't see your post today. Are you okay?

Welcome TigersMom. I too lost my LO last October. He passed in my arms at home. Stage 8 is a real struggle for me. Lurking on the porch has been so healing for me. I learn so much about all kinds of different things here! I've learned the names of so many different plants and flowers that I wish I could grow LOL. Been a city girl all my life and reading some of the posts makes me think I am a country girl at heart. I only wish I had more to contribute.
I'm trying to keep a list of the regular posters here and their location. What do you guys think of posting where we are from? I'll start.
Born in Ecuador, my daddy came to Miami, FL (legally) in 1965. Bought a house, started a business and we came in 1965. I lost him in an accident when I was 13, saddest day of my life. One of my sons and my mom still live in Miami. My other son lives close to me. He was a huge help when I was taking care of my LO and I was thankful he was close by.
I currently reside in southeast Florida in Broward county.
I know Lorita and Judith are in Oklahoma, Zetta is in Arizona, Beth in Iowa?, Ron and Carl in Illinois? HB in PA, Eagle also in PA? I would love to know where everyone is from!

Good to see your post .Caro Lynn. As you said, I'm in East central oklahoma, still living in the house where I wss born. I live on the farm my folks bought in 1936 so my family has been here a long time and I love it!

Thanks Lorita. You are the reason I started posting here. I love reading about the girls, the GP's, the cats, Rusty and in general your beautiful life on the farm!

I don't post often but do read daily about all of you.
I live in the northern most part of Virginia at the start of the Shenandoah valley.
I lived outside of Tampa, Fl. for about 10 years as I worked for GTE. My work there and for a company in Atlanta kept me traveling a lot in the US and some foreign countries.
I came to this site when my father was diagnosed with ALZ. We lost him 3 yrs ago.
Now I am the old silver haired lady of the neighborhood who crochets, reads and does crossword puzzles.

Caro-Lynn, im a born and raised Louisiana boy who just the past two weeks moved to Missouri where Carl also lives.
It's a small world! Just found out that a lady i went to high school with lives right out of Branson. I'm going to met her and husband for lunch after my Dr appointment the 24th. Also found out she had played Minnie Pearl on the Hank Williams Sr. show.

Lorita, I'm fine. Thanks for asking. I had lunch with an old friend and had a really good burrito and some good talk in a Mexican cafe.
I live in southwest Missouri, surrounded by large Corps of Engineers lakes and some pretty decent floating rivers. The official car here is a pickup with a trailer hitch for the bass boat, and Springfield is the world headquarters for Bass Pro Shops and for the Assembly of God.
My wife died on May 27 and I'm still figuring out what I'm good for besides telling stories in cafes and on porches.

Marie, I'm trying to get back into crochet - I love it! I'm having a difficult time remembering the cryptic abbreviations for the various stitches. Youtube is my friend.
Ron, how did you find your high school friend? Love your new temporary home! You are so right about it being a small world. Years ago I was in Venice, Italy and I hear someone calling my name. I ignored at first thinking who would be calling my name in Venice! Turns out it was my brother's high school girlfriend! Small world indeed.

Ron, tell your friend that Minnie Pearl was the toughest of the Country Western Outlaws. She has a price on her head. 😁

Glad you like to hear about my farm.life, Carl Lynne and glad you're posting.

Watched another Walking with Dinosaurs tonight. Really good. Going to watch TV in. The bedroom for a while - been a !ong day. Good night, sleep tight.

Carl, I did not know that Springfield was the headquarters of Bass Pro Shops and Assembly of God. Forgive my ignorance, but what is a floating river?
Nite, nite Lorita xo

Carl, glad you had a good burrito for lunch. Southwest Missouri and Northwest Arkansas are both beautiful. Pickups with trailer hitches here, too, but for small cattle trailers. And there is a whole lot of white flatbeds with trailer hitches for big cattle trailers. . Mike has some that are the size of semis.. Always makes me sad to see them.going down the driveway with our girls
