Learned a new word today: flexitarian. A flexitarian eats a diet that is mostly plant based but eats some meat and/or fish. I've been a flexitarian all my life, but only today learned a word for it. My brother says our mother didn't prepare meat main courses with veggie side dishes, she prepared veggie main courses with meat side dishes.
I'm having Mandarin Combination this evening. That is stir-fried rice and veggies, with scraps of chicken, beef, and shrimp. I could make it myself, but I have the lazies so it was handed to me through the drive-up window of the Hong Kong Inn.
It's 84 with a breeze today, really nice. The weather is dry, as usual here in August, and no rain is in the forecast until Sunday, with only a 35% chance of rain then. We aren't having the crop-killing droughts some are seeing, but we could use rain.

I did manage to throw together a garden bouquet for the Bride with hydrangeas and basil tied up with something old, blue, borrowed and tucked in a little keepsake piece “new” to her. Amazingly she wore a long floral sundress with the colors as the bouquet. It was sweet and she was happy. Topped the afternoon off with a Chinese Buffet early dinner. Not bad for the 30 minute turnaround after getting the boat home.

Been watching a baby staked out across the pond. He gets up every once in a while, then lays down. Put.on my.boots and went to the barn to make sure everything was okay. There was one cow and three little ones inside. Came out and thought I would get in the PU and call the girls up so the calf's mom would come. It's been three winters and they have forgotten so came back and walked back to close the gate. . Guess I.got my boot stuck in a weed and down I went. Looks like the outside of my.knee may be bruised. Of course fell on my.left side.
Sandy, I had on my medical guardian but it didn't detect the fall. Got up and came in and dropped.it on the floor and it worked this time.. Have tried twice to call but haven't gotten someone yet. I think I may change to Consumer Cellular where I have my phone. They have a device like this one for $25. A month so would save about $65 over a three month.period.
I can't get close to the baby or it would take off. Years ago one got startled and took off, ran half a mile through fences and across the road. Charles hunted for it three days but never found it. It did finally come back.
Carl I have never heard of that word either. I am what is called a lacto-ovo -no meat or fish.but do eat eggs occasionally and lots of dairy. No meat for probably 40 years.
Your supper sounds good. I love Chinese food, especially fried rice.
No rain here, Judith except a quarter inch. Wish we could had gotten a Couple of inches.

At dark the cow still had not come to get her baby. I drove down to the mailbox and the girls are a quarter mile away.. Stopped by the barn to check and there is at least one other baby in there. Guess.they will come and get them before long. I will have to.go out in the morning and take care of a gate the girls have knocked down at one end of the pen. I hate for them to.leave the babies staked out so long, especially in the heat.
Good night, sleep tight.

Pretty moon tonight. It won't be full until Saturday, but it isn't bad.
The boy up the street has a bicycle now, replacing his big wheel trike I suppose. He rode into the street in front of me without looking just at sunset, but I saw him wobbling on the sidewalk and wasn't surprised to see him cut me off, so no problem.
Lorita, I could live with lacto-ovo but I wouldn't voluntarily do vegan. A vegan doesn't even put milk in his cereal, take a spoonful of honey to ease a sore throat, or wear wool in winter. Glad you weren't seriously hurt when you fell.
Vegetable fried rice is really good if it contains an egg and a good variety of veggies, with a dose of garlic. The first time I made fried rice I misread the recipe and cooked four cups of rice instead of making four cups of cooked rice. We had shrimp fried rice one day, rice and beans the second day, chicken and rice the third day . . . 😊 I just might do that again when I get more motivated. It's hard to make things like that for one, but I don't usually mind leftovers. If we weren't meant to eat leftovers, we would not have been given microwave ovens.

HB - I'm reading with interest about your DS and ASD. The ASD sounds almost like my brother, although I'd peg his emotional maturity at about age 15. I'm sure he's somewhere on the spectrum, but he's undiagnosed, and highly unlikely to see a doctor, ever.
I hope your optometrist appointment goes well. I feel ya with the cataracts. I think I'm going to have to do something about mine sooner rather than later. I can almost feel my eyes changing.
Carl - put your phone on "do not disturb" and then delete the texts and phone calls (block them first) when you wake up. Now when my phone rings I know it's for me. I've got my close friends in my "favorites" list and calls get through if they're on that list. That's if you have an iPhone. If you have something else, I don't what the protocol is.
The scam I'm seeing often these days is an email wanting me to sign a docusign form from an unknown entity. Yeah, like I'm going to do that.
I know the word "flexitarian", but I suspect it's because I'm from California. And we're weird that way. By the way, I have a pretty decent recipe for kung pau chicken (or veggies, fish, or tofu) if you're interested. I got it from a friend of mine who worked at one of my favorite Chinese restaurants (sadly it's long gone). This was back in my college days, but I still use that recipe on a fairly regular basis.
I couldn't be vegan either - I love chocolate too much.
JeriLynn - those are some mighty fancy Crocs! I like what you did to them.
Your garden bouquet is beautiful - as is the rest of your gift.
Carl and Lorita - I hope the people responsible for killing those cows go to jail for a good long time. Truly evil.
Lorita - I hope you're okay after your fall.
Judith - we're supposed to get some rain next week - which I would balk at (taking away one of my summer days), but there are fires, and the rain will help with that.
As for me? Right now I'm listening to Death Guild and chatting with the group. We'll see how long I last, I'm kind of tired. Chair dancing for now. I'm an hour in and so far, it's a good night.

I pulled some flank muscles at the Jazz Festival on Saturday because I've been in a lot of pain today. I didn't even get dressed, I was in so much pain. I rested all day and took aspirin. I sat on the ground and sort of propped myself up by leaning on some wooden chairs. I can't do that any more, I need a real chair to sit in.

Iris and Lorita, I know how you feel. If I wake and nothing hurts, I'm afraid I died in the night.
GG, I love Kung Pau chicken, shrimp, etc. If you have a recipe I'd like to see it.
It's 1:30 AM here, I think I'll try to sleep. Good night!

Morning, Iris, hope you feel better today. When I have soreness I rely on what used to be Theragesic but no longer made. There's another one that's similar, Pain Relief, but not as good.
Carl, I have a knot on my shin below my knee that doesn't hurt and another one on the outside of my left knee that is sore but doesn't hurt. I got up early, got my.boots on and found my fencing tool- couldn't find wire cutters and went to the barn. Found some baling wire, then got the gate up and moved it over against a partition in the barn.. It's seven feet long and has 2x6 boards around the edges encasing a wire cattle panel. It's about five feet high so that's a lot. Of 2x6s to move.
Filled the water tank while I drove out in the pasture to check on girls. I saw four tiny babies, anywhere from one to three weeks old and several.older ones so guess moms finally came back and got their babies. All the girls came over to the PU so they did remember feed used to come from it. They have drifted off to make their rounds before heading to the barn. Felt really good to be doing things I used to always do.
Darwin called while I was out. Not doing too well this morning. He went out yesterday and did some cutting on a couple of big trees that had fallen. He said it was really hard getting the limbs off and through two feet tall grass to his mule. Then he unloaded it when he got home.
There are a couple of warning lights on in the PU and I know a rodent has a nest under the hood. Need to get some more diesel in it. So that's something else to take care of. Had my.juice and.now it's time for hot tea. You all stay cool today.
Just took a deep breath and find that my ribs are sore on both sides. Guess I was too busy to notice before. Guess I.better get out the pain relief cream.

The longer I'm up and around I find I'm sore all over more than anywhere else. Did really enjoy being out with the girls and on the land this morning.
Did you all know this is Work Like A Dog Day?

Iris….sending chicken soup
Went to have an Epley maneuver done this morning. Hopefully once will get me over the BPPV.
Treating myself to take away for lunch.
Carl… I crok-pot quite a bit then wrap individual servings in foil and put in a freezer bag. You have me thinking about stir fried rice.

Good, barely still, morning.
Jerilynn— I hope your DH's stress test goes well. Will he be having the treadmill or pharmacological version? Or will they just have a random grandchild call with a ridiculous request? DH has one tomorrow— his is contrast MRI which means we are headed downtown.
The bouquet you made is lovely.
Carl— I'm a fan of most foods I didn't cook. But I do love Chinese, Vietnamese and Thai especially. I have a couple of Chinese recipes which justify my need for a wok. The boy's favorite is Manchurian Chicken which is an Indian interpretation of Chinese food served in restaurants in Kolkata.
Lorita— I'm sorry to hear of your fall. My watch doesn't always go off and more often goes off when I didn't fall (mostly grabbing things out of the dishwasher or top-loading washing machine. The watch, and possibly your guardian, works by detecting acceleration in 3 different axes— x, y, and z. That means sideways, forward-backward or straight down. If you feel on an angle or slowly it might not register the fall.
Iris— That sounds really painful. I hope it subsides soon.
Gothic G— I suspect there are a lot of folks who have gone undiagnosed. FWIW, Asperger's as a diagnosis was included in the DSM-IV published in 1992 and folded into ASD in the DSM-5 in 2013. One basically needed to be a nudgy boy in the timeframe to be picked up. One of my cousins sought and obtained a diagnosis the year after DS got his at the age of 39.

Puttering around this morning. I'm on my 4th load of laundry and have made a batch of granola and one of banana bread. Niece reached out to thank me for "suggesting" the White Flower Farm gift certificate to mom and making it happen. She'll call mom to thank her later.
I need to run to the store before my eye appointment.

HB, my medical guardian went.off this morning when I was getting my cereal in the pantry - must have.gotten something against it. I guess I'll stay with the MG since it was rated best.
You all probably won't believe this but... You know about the refrigerator saga, - well I called this morning to check the status of my claim. I was told it was voided because the refrigerator is working!!! Could have fooled me! She will accelerate the claim again. They aren't going to replace it. So do not ever get a Sears Protection Home Warranty. You can't talk with anyone except a person in Asia and they can't transfer you. It used to.be a good warranty with no charge for a visit and replacement. Now they changed it so you pay $100 for a service call. My renewal is in September and if I don't have a new refrig. By then, guess what I won't do. At least I have another new refrigerator in the utility room. I tried to stay calm and not get upset like last week but it was hard. No need to yell at the messenger.
Judith, isn't that procedure what you had some time ago for dizziness? Hope it works for you. Stamps went up again -78 cents now. Carol mailed a picture to me last Monday and I got it a week later, not postmarked. We live 30 miles apart!

Hello Porch Friends.
I'm trying my best to keep up with all your post. Your all so busy, all the time.
We have 4 homes in Bosie, we're looking at, hopefully the decision will be made tomorrow, so we can plan our move. My daughter is already downsizing. We have a lot of things, we don't want to move. We have a young couple, that just moved in here in Arizona, right next door to us that were giving lots of stuff to.
Take care all, your in my thoughts and prayers 🙏 Hugs Zetta

Lorita…time for your attorney to write a note to Sears or you can call the CEO. You will likely not talk to the CEO but you will tak to someone who "can" help you.

Judith, that is the funniest story I have heard in a long time!
0 -
I am feeling a little bit better today.
Lorita, are you doing too much? What were you carrying that was seven feet long?
I never heard of Work Like a Dog Day, it's a great sentiment. But you don't have to now, because you have already done it.
Tonight is also National Night Out. But I will be in tonight.
Judith, thanks for the chicken soup, it hit the spot!
Jeanne Roberts is so funny.
I hope your Epley procedure worked and you will be steady on your feet again.
JeriLynn, the bouquet is lovely.
Zetta, wishing you strength in your downsizing, because it can be hard to let go of one's stuff.

Last night Death Guild was so good we stayed until the end! It ends at 2:30, so we didn't get to sleep until around 3:30. I never schedule anything on Tuesday mornings to allow for nights like last night. Fun night.
Carl (and anyone else) - here's the Kung Pau recipe. You can use whatever protein you want - chicken, tofu, shrimp, or just plain veggies. If you're using chicken, cube it into one to two inch bite sized pieces. Cut up all veggies into small pieces.
For the sauce: (I usually multiply this by 6 for two people)
2 tbl. soy sauce
1 tbl vinegar
1/2 tbl brown sugar
1 tbl corn (or potato) starch - no matter how much you increase the sauce recipe, don't put in more than a couple of tablespoons of this otherwise it'll get gloppy.
To cook:
In a cool wok, add sesame oil (about 3tbl). Turn up the heat. Break apart a few cayenne peppers (more or less depending on how spicy you like it) and let them char. They'll go from red to black.
Add about 3 tbl ginger. Stir it with the cayenne peppers.
If you're using chicken, add it right after the ginger and peppers . Cook the chicken until it's almost done. If you're using carrots add them mid-way through the chicken cooking process.
Add the sauce and stir.
Add in whatever veggies you like. We use broccoli, snap peas, green beans, and red bell peppers. I also throw in a small can of straw mushrooms.
If you feel like you want more sauce, add it now and stir until the veggies are cooked the way you like (crunchier or not as crunchy)
When finished, sprinkle chopped green onion and peanuts.
I'll be back later - time for my Tuesday afternoon DJ hour. 🙂

Carl…you can find lots of her tapes onlline…all are laugh outloud!
0 -
GG, do you really mean "multiply by six for two people" in the sauce recipe?
0 -
Carl, yeah, I do. Depending on how many veggies you put into it, you might find that the sauce doesn't go as far as you think it might.
0 -
Thanks, GG. I'll multiply by three.
Jeanne Robertson's story about the Chinese dinner reminds me of a KFC ad from several years ago. A lovely old woman was carefully arranging fried chicken on a platter and hiding the cardboard bucket. That's like sprinkling a little flour on a store-bought pie to make it look homemade.
1 -
Carl, you say this like it's wrong. 🤫 I do this, it's my secret to "homemade" meals.

Nothing wrong with it as far as I'm concerned. I just think of it as a catered dinner party. My favorite aunt had a recipe for ham with cherry sauce that involved a can of cherry pie filling and a can opener. It was really good!
