Iris, it sounds like there was plenty to do onboard the ship. I'm watching The Rare Bteed, a show about the introduction of Herefords to America. Many years ago that was almost the only kind of cattle around here. Now it's mostly black Angus but there is one rancher who runs Red Angus. Hardly any Herefords around now. I think Hereford calves are so sweet. Sad ending to this show. Temps were so cold and snowy the bull, Vindicator, froze but he threw part Hereford calves born the next Spring.

I like the dress, too, GG. Very pretty. Weather says we may have 4-5" of rain this coming week. We do need it and the much cooler temps. Timee to stop for now. Sleep well. Good night.

    Good Morning,

Iris - yes, Victoria is on the southern tip of Vancouver Island and is the capital of all of Canada; the way Washington DC is for us. My grandparents homesteaded outside of Campbell River and I remember the cruise ships going by. So big compared to everything else. If you ever get a chance Victoria has some of the worlds best and most famous botanical gardens.

GG - buy that dress and like Carl said take it for twirl.

Honey harvesting time around here and we will be very busy for the next few weeks. I will try to remember to take some pictures to share. This will be the last year DW will be participating; it is so sad but getting confused while working with 5000 bees is not for the faint of heart. Last year we actually dropped a box of bees with honey filled frames and I should have known then, it was increasingly too difficult for her to manage. Funny I took so much care and time transitioning her away from driving but hadn't given our beekeeping much thought. It will be a safety thing for HER and the BEES. Sigh, anyone want to take up honey beekeeping???? I miss my wife.

I miss my wife too, Goodlife. The saddest part of AD is the thought that this could be the last time, over and over again, one thing after another.

I like Vancouver a lot. We visited one of the botanical gardens, an old quarry that had been rehabilitated. We climbed a small hill, then descended into the garden. Lovely.

    Good morning.

Lorita— Funny you mention the Club Crackers. I bought a box last month and thought that both the box and the actual crackers felt small. I don't buy crackers often aside from the odd box of Spicy Cheetos or Frank's Hot Sauce Goldfish. Cereal boxes have gotten freakishly small as well.

Gothic G— That's a great dress. I really like the lines and the potential to accessorize the living daylights out of it. I liked the one with the square neckline as well. There's a lot of talk about the tariff's impact on the bridal industry. A surprising number of gowns are designed by Australian companies which have the gowns made is China.

I agree, it would be fascinating to study which "kid" gets charged with caregiving duties when a parent or sibling needs care. I wonder if the nature of the illness plays into this. Anecdotally, it seems the so-called Elder Daughter Syndrome plays into this. But I also see a lot of instances where a younger sibling who never quite transitioned to independence get saddled with being caregiver.

Carl— Google tells me a Seattle dog is a thing. I'm trying to wrap my mind around the first time the thought crossed someone's mind that this would be a good idea. Once, DH ordered a "Philly Cheesesteak" at a pub in Scotland just to see what their iteration of our local dish would be. It was a bap (s soft roll) slathered with "Philly cheese" with a random piece of beef added. He said it was inedible.

Iris— Mucinex is one of mom's daily meds. Her pulmonologist prescribes the OTC 1200mg ER version twice daily. This is critical to her well-being and it drives me crazy when she'd admitted as a patient as the hospital always screws it up. Because it's not on their formulary, they substitute 400mg b.i.d. which doesn't butter-the-biscuit and then wonder why her COPD exacerbation isn't improving. Makes me crazy.

What sort of plastic surgery do they offer on-board? I suspect it's aesthetic procedures— fillers and botox or maybe med-spa facials.

Goodlife— It's painful to watch a LO lose their interest and/or abilities around a longtime passion. It's these activities that define who they are and it hurts to watch that fade.

    ___________________________________________________________________________________

I am having a hard time getting going this morning. I need to catch up some laundry before mom's eye appointment at 3. We're nearly out of towels again. I have a load of dark clothing that'll need folding and hanging, too.

    Good morning,

3:45 am here and I'm doing last minute List Checking for our little trip to Fall Creek Falls, a campground on the Cumberland Plateau in Tennessee. The park is 30k acres with the highest waterfall in the region at 246 feet. Spencer is the name of the town nearest the park entrance. It's a beautiful place. Only about a 2-hour drive from home. There are several small towns to explore along with the waterfalls and the river.

From Wikipedia: "The Cumberland Plateau is the southern part of the Appalachian Plateau in the Appalachian Mountains of the United States. It includes much of eastern Kentucky and Tennessee, and portions of northern Alabama (Sand Mountain) and northwest Georgia. [1]  The terms "Allegheny Plateau" and the "Cumberland Plateau" both refer to the dissected plateau lands lying west of the main Appalachian Mountains."

Mostly we are going to just get away and be still. We're coming home Thursday and then we'll be hosting all of DH's grands and great grands for a Labor Day weekend pool party on Saturday. Only 18 expected. Plus us. DH is in charge of the grill. I'll do the typical potato salad, cole slaw, green salad, baked beans and desserts - brownies and banana pudding.

Iris, we have reduced our herd to a manageable 12 nannies and 1 billy goat. He's a beauty. Then there are 4 "kids", all weaned. No new babies Lorita, although we do have a couple nannies are bred. If you recall, we had so many winter babies last year and I just don't like that. I think it's too hard on everybody so we have worked to manage breeding on a better schedule. It's working.

Here’s a picture of Twinkle and Gal. They are about 6 months old and they are “Besties”; where you see one you see the other 😂 Gal is @GothicGremlin ’s grandgoat🤣

    Good morning!

Irish, I can relate to your cronic cough. I've had one for some time and now they are saying pulmonary fibrosis. On top if that, they are increasing my ateneoll and wanting another 7 to 10 day heart monitor due to significant SVT.

I'm in Springfield now getting all season tires. I had my second flat tire in a week and was going to wait on the tires, but decided I don't like driving on a donut, so its time.

    Good morning.

Iris, here is a recipe for tomato soup with fresh tomatoes. Tomato basil soup. Likely you would need more than one tomato - this recipe could be halved.

▢ 1 tablespoon olive oil , (for oil-free use a little bit of water)

    ▢ 1 medium onion , diced

    ▢ 3 large cloves garlic , minced

▢ 7 cups (49 oz / 1.4 kg) chopped fresh tomatoes , (large, cherry, grape, or a mixture)

▢ 1 large handful fresh basil , roughly chopped▢ 2 teaspoons fine sea salt , or to taste

▢ 1 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper , or to tasteI

    NSTRUCTIONS

▢Put the oil in a large pan and heat on medium.▢Once the oil is hot add the onions and cook for 2 to 3 minutes until translucent and just starting to turn golden on the edges. Then add the garlic and cook for 1 minute more, stirring frequently.

▢Add the chopped tomatoes. Bring to a simmer and cook for 5 to 6 minutes until the tomatoes are simmering and just starting to break down. The smaller the tomato pieces, the quicker this will happen. Larger chunks might take a couple minutes more.

▢Remove from the heat and add the basil, salt and pepper then blend with an immersion blender in the pan, or transfer to a blender, blend then return to the pan for a minute or two to warm up again. Serve immediately.

    Good morning all,

This morning is starting off with a bit of a chill in the air at 76 degrees but will get up to around 96. I love the cooler mornings, enjoying a cup of coffee and watching the wildlife graze.

GG - I don’t recall Beau Thai, though I love Thai food. I moved from Monterey in 1978 and have only been back for a couple of short visits. Having lived there for 20 years, as a child into adulthood, it’ll always be “home”.

The dress is stunning! As others have said, give it a twirl!

Iris - I so enjoyed seeing your cruise pictures! It’s been 20 years since we did the HAL Alaska cruise and your pictures brought back memories.

Ugh, heading out in a bit to check out washers/dryers and ovens. I’m dreading the experience and have been procrastinating. Sometimes I just get tired of making decisions.

The German Shepherd is barking at wildlife, coyotes are regular visitors. Time to leash up and head out for a walk before it gets too hot.

Shrinkflation is so common that there is a name for it.

Medications have been going up in price, as has health insurance, but I don't give it a lot of thought because I will have to buy it anyway. We live in a country that lacks a public health system, and being overcharged for health care is part of the price we pay. Another part of the price we pay is a horde of people who are disabled by untreated injuries because they don't have adequate health insurance and Medicaid will not pay for the care necessary to restore function. Penny wise, pound foolish.

It's cool with showers this morning, and I am glad of it. I went to breakfast this morning with a small group of men who have lost someone and had a pleasant conversation. The group meets monthly and I plan to attend next month as well.

    good afternoon

Iris, I was born in Carter County, Kentucky. I doubt if you’ll be visiting there I don’t know what you would go see. I like it there, but it is the foothills of Appalachia. I’m guessing you’re going to visit prettier places, i.e. Lexington horse farms.

Carl, it sounds like you’ve found a great social support group. Meeting weekly with several friends who are, or have experienced, ALZ in family members has been therapeutic for me.

Re meds and cost increases, I was surprised that the one MRF I take is now only 1/3 of the previous cost. It changed a month ago but I haven’t looked into why. Just grateful.

    Send showers this way please!

What a sad welcome back to the boards. 🙁 I responded to a caregiver member on the PWD board and explained about anosognosia. A PWD member objected to my wording and was rude and threatening and told me to stay off "their" board.

Goodlife, I don't know why HAL changed their itinerary because the last time I visited Victoria there was still daylight. I would have liked to visit Butchart Gardens, but not at night.

You say Victoria is the capital of all of Canada. What happened to Ottawa?

Eve, I wish everyone could enjoy a cruise to Alaska, it's so interesting in many ways.

HB, I'm glad the full strength Mucinex help your mom's cough. It's terrible to cough so much and can't catch your breath. Does she get humidified air treatments?

JeriLynn, Falls Creek Falls sounds beautiful. Is it surrounded by thick trees? I drove through the Smokey Mountains, is it near there?

I like your simple desserts, brownies and banana pudding. On the ship they served fancy desserts, but I was hankering for a couple of oatmeal cookies.

Are your goats milk goats? My husband grew up with goats in his country and I briefly fantasized about us having a goat farm. But it was only a fantasy because I realized it would have been too much for us to start from scratch.

Did I mention a book I read written by a woman who discovered that a goat milk soap treated her husband's total body rash? She then started him on goat milk and goat cheese, and gave him goat milk lotions . He became totally cleared of rashes. She developed goat milk products into a business. I believe they are in England. I don't recall the name of the book, unfortunately.

Twinkle and Gal are really cute.

Ron, I hope you get good news from your heart monitor.

It is so nice to drive on new tires.

Beth, I love that recipe for fresh tomato soup. I will try it tomorrow, today I go to pick up my cats from the pet hotel where they stayed while I was on the cruise.

Carl, it's good that you have met a group of men you can meet with regularly.

Mint, yes, we will be visiting a couple of horse farms, a few bourbon distilleries and a brewery, Churchill Downs and Noah's Ark. We will be there for one week. I hope I can learn about how the Colonel developed Kentucky Fried Chicken. I will search for Carter County on the map.

We have beautiful weather today here in SoCal.

    Good morning Rockers.

Iris. I'm so sorry for that response you got. 😢

I loved that picture of Seattle you shared with us. I have been in the Space Needle, a few times. Its scary when you get to the top. My DD lived there for a few years. Seattle, is where my SILs, career started out. I bet it feels good to be home, hopefully you can get enough rest before you leave again.

Eaglemom. Those cinnamon rolls sound delicious, I just added some to my Walmart, list. I don't do homemade I do the ones from the can that pops open.

JeriLynn. Please enjoy your trip to The Fall Creek Campground. Get rested up for your Labor Day, weekend plans. Twinkle and Gal, look so sweet.

Lorita. Try not to get a TV with all the bells and whistles on it. My DD has one and all i can do is turn it on change channels and control the volume.

Sounds like a few of us will be looking for washers and dryers. We will be getting a new set when we get to Bosie. I'm also looking forward to the cooler weather. We're suppose to be having cooler weather here this week.

    Hugs to all Zetta

Afternoon, I will check on the regular tvs. S tta, Carol says that is all she can do on their tv, too.

Iris, sorry that happened to you. You were only trying to help. Try to not let it bother you.

It is 67 degrees with light rain. What a change from last week!

HB. I was thinking the same thing about the dress. Every pkg. Sent to the US is going to pay high taxes.

Love the pictures of the goats, JeriLynn. Winter babies are hard on moms, babies and us. We always tried to have spring babies but didn't always work. Mike has kept bulls in with the girls all summer so we'll see. Don't know why because he doesn't usually do that.

Does anyone have a recipe for Tomato Bisque? I'm not supposed to eat seeds so would be hard to make tomato soup with fresh tomatoes.

Everyone is in the bedroom watching tv.. Stayed in bed watching yesterday but moved to the chaise lounge today. Seems better. Watching Wagon Train, Zetta.

MInt, some of my ancestors were from Kentucky but we have never been there except.I think we changed planes st an airport in northern Kentucky when we were coming home from Washington. You know we went walking at night when we were there, in a park and and never saw anything bad. We thought everyone was very friendly.

Iris…you must let it roll off your back. Keep on sharing what is important. Every once in a while, great while thankfully, someone is really disruptive. Like Carl, I too have been a target. It is not pleasant.

What is surprising to me is that the hostility came from someone you have had a "conversation" with in the past. They have been around since 2023 with very little activity.

I am glad the post was reported …the thread has been closed.

Thanks you guys. I ordered the dress. It doesn't look like I'm going to get killed by tariffs, which is great. Some of their stuff is made in China, some of it in Australia. I guess that dress is made in Australia (whew). It's definitely made for twirling and I can accessorize to my heart's content. 🙂 I can even wear it at my mom-in-law's independent living facility and no one will look askance at me.

Carl - I remember the giant grasshopper movie! If there's a bad horror/sci fi movie out there, chances are high that I've seen it. As I'm thinking of it, if bad sci fi is something you enjoy, you might like The Lost Skeleton of Cadavra. It's a spoof of all of those movies, it's in black and white (of course), the acting is purposefully bad, and it is incredibly funny. Here's the trailer.

I don't know anything about "Seattle Dogs", except - I don't like onions, cream cheese, or hot dogs. 😄 I really am a picky eater …..

Iris - I'm sorry that was your 'welcome back' to the boards. I'm glad the post was reported.

Mt. Saint Helens is about 3 hours or so south of Seattle. I've only been there once, but it was definitely worth the drive. They have a fantastic visitor center, with lots of information about the eruption, including ash exhibits. You can hike near the volcano too, but you'll need a permit.

JeriLynn - enjoy your trip to Fall Creek Falls, it looks lovely.

Twinkle and Gal! 😍 So very cute. And my grandgoat!! 😄

There's a hawk in the backyard - he/she has been there all afternoon. My s.o. got a great pic of him. We have a fake owl sitting on the back railing to scare off other birds (it seems to work), and this hawk was having no part of that fake owl. In the pic you can see him yelling at the owl. The quality of the photo isn't great but my s.o. was standing in the kitchen and taking the photo through glass.

    unhappy hawk.jpg

Edited to add - I just read the comment that you flagged, Iris. All I can say is "!!!!!!!!!!!!" There was nothing in that post that even remotely warranted the response you got. I'm so sorry.

Dear Iris…It's been a very long time since I've posted here, but I do read this thread. My husband passed away 10 years ago. As we progressed down our sad road I often went over to the separate thread where you contributed so very many valuable tips for me. I would go over there and ask many specific questions and was helped so very much by the answers given to me. This forum and your answers kept me pretty much one step ahead of my husband and made me aware of the preparations that I would need in the future. So I'm standing with the others here and thanking you for your contributions.

    Thank you, Iris.

That is so funny, GG, great picture. How did you read the flagged post?

H B, I.did get the coupon code early this morning. Called Sears but they didn't ask for it when I talked to them. However they are going to send me a check for the refrigerator replacement because at this point they can't get an order through. We will see if I.do get the check in 7-14 days, then I can buy another one wherever I want. I really like the one from Lowes, a Whirlpool. It isn't in the kitchen so have to go to utility room to get something out of it. Amazing how many times you need to get in the refrigerator during the day. At the moment it's okay, just want to get the check for replacement and will go from there.

Iris, grasshoppers are creepy,- they aren't like cicadas.Their feet stick on you if they get on your skin. One got under the back of my loose fitting dress yesterday. Would.not want to see the movie Carl mentioned. They're most everywhere but Mike says they seem to be worse in this area. They are now 2-3" !ong and lots are yellow instead of green. They eat shrub and flower leaves.Roses of Sharon are almost defoliated and I even see a few holes in the caladium leaves.. ,Judith, glad your caladiums are up and growing. They will be pretty until the first freeze or frost. It was a full 20 degrees cooler today, really was nice.

    Good night, again.

Now I'm just sitting here chair dancing to what I'm hearing at Death Guild and chatting with my online pals there. It's been a good night, so far. I'll be going to sleep by midnight though - I signed up for boot camp this week (because I'm insane). 😄
