Lorita - I'm glad things involving your appliances are starting to calm down. You had to deal with this for way too long. And I love that you had an actual check in the mail!
I like that Charles was a clothes horse. My s.o. is a label hound - Hugo Boss all the way. Thing is, those shirts look good on him, so I can't say he's wrong.
HB - I'm certainly old enough to remember all of that, but that wasn't how we did it. I actually don't remember how we did it, but I know that punch cards weren't involved. I remember the sign up tables though.
I certainly remember SSNs being used instead of names for privacy's sake (shudder). Plus, my work-study job was in the alumni-development office (the fundraising office), so as a student, I had access to way too many student records, including biographical info and SSNs. This is one of the reasons why I ended up becoming a privacy advocate - I was horrified by the cavalier use of SSNs, even back then. I remember thinking back then that I should not have access to what I had access to.
Beth - It sounds like you've had a great day.
Zetta and Carl - I don't think I know anything about key punch cards. But — at my high school — I had an after school job in the main office answering phones. They had one of those old telephone switchboards, the ones with the cords (not a PBX). It was outdated long before I was there! All I could think of was Lily Tomlin and Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In. But I learned how to use it.
Today was pretty good, although there are fires to the north and east of us. It's filtered the sun, so that the light is a sickly yellow. We've got the air purifiers going.
Gym was an hour of escrima, so all cardio. My trainer and I got into a good flow, exchanging offense and defense. It felt really good. We didn't have mats today so there were no physical take downs (whew). I think a side reason why I like martial arts so much is because I like playing Go, which I've played for years. Go has often been described as a "mental martial art", so I was probably primed to like physical martial arts.

My mom was a SAHM and her first job when I was twelve was as a switchboard operator, like Lily Tomlin portrayed. My mom used a professional speaking voice and I subconsciously copied her inflections.
GG, I served on the board of directors of my condo association. We had to fill out a signature card for the bank with all of our identifying information, so that we could write checks. Copies were casually kept in a file folder in a locked file cabinet. At one time I did get all of my own identifying information out of that folder. Later on, one of the board members became negative towards me and threatened to sue me. I'm so glad I had removed my personal information from her access. I keep getting asked to run for the board again, but I will not.
Another day of coughing. I took the trash out. One neighbor is doing demolition and the workers discarded the bathtub into our trash bin. Owners doing demo are supposed to hire a dumpster for what comes out of their unit. But I didn't say anything.
My friends are in Kentucky now. I'll see if anyone posts pictures.
