Good morning. It's a little cloudy at the moment but not wet so I will take it as a win.

Lorita— Too verbose? You are the soul of this thread. I love your stories about a life and community that are so different from my own.

Iris— I missed National Dessert Day. What a bummer. Today is National Cheese Curd Day which doesn't have quite the same appeal.

Mint— Your nephew sounds a bit like DS. He often skips a free meal at home to grab something out. He did this to me last night. I'd planned for a salad with grilled chicken for him, he Ok'd the menu and texted me later he was going to Chipotle.

Is your nephew meeting friends or is he opting for a place where he could enjoy a specific kind of food or a beer he can't get at your place? I've often wondered if, for DS, this is rooted in some ADHD trait like needing instant gratification because he didn't plan for lunch and is now ravenous.

Lady Z— I bet Molly is happier out of the Arizona heat.

I'm glad you found your safety-Starbucks to tide you over until you find a drive thru. My little town has 3, plus a couple independent roasters. There's a very pleasant one on the main shopping street with cozy armchairs and community tables. Ironically, this space was once an old-time Acme (grocery store also owned by Albertsons). The second is a drive-thru that is crazy-busy with a line that snakes through the parking lot plus teens on foot from the nearby high school. It's a menace. In the same shopping center, there is the third inside the Acme.

Judith— Your cardiologist sounds delightful. Along with good test results that would make for a pleasant appointment.

Ron— I'm glad you made it to Springfield. Was it a long drive for you?

Carl— Feeding a husband and 4 sons sounds arduous. DH's mom was a widow school teach with 3 boys. She made a lot of casseroles. DH does not look back fondly on his mom's cooking. My mom was one of 9 children. Her mom made a proper dinner nightly and then had the kids walk home for lunch daily for homemade soup and sandwiches. She was an amazing cook but it must've been a lot to do that daily.

I've never been to a HOA meeting. They were pretty rabid here initially. They've lightened up considerably in the single-family home sections but can still be pretty draconian in the townhouses and condos. They do still ban wooden sheds and line drying laundry. It makes me nuts. I wouldn't have moved into a HOA-neighborhood unless I was desperate at the time.

    _______________________________________________________________________

I have a blessedly quiet day ahead. I do need to pay a couple bills and chase down some contractors along with the ever-present laundry, but I don't have to leave the house so yay!

    Be safe out there today.
    HB

HOAs are set up by developers to keep property values up until they can sell all the lots in the subdivision. After that, they take on a life of their own. I involve myself to keep my place from being filled by some nut, plus it gives me an excuse to hang out with neighbors one evening a month (I'm on the board of directors again this year). Our main function is to keep the community pool and playground running, which means we have to collect HOA dues, and we throw a party at the pool once or twice a year. We do have to enforce the covenants - goes with the territory. If we don't do it, the developer will hire a property management company to do it, at our expense.

    Good morning.

I used to be the Recreation Director of my HOA, responsible for the two clubhouses. Years ago, we played Trivial Pursuit and had a Halloween party for kids and a New Year's Eve party for adults. It was fun times!

HB i’m guessing it’s an ADHD trait. The same here, sometimes he okays it but after I fix it he eats none of it. I’m left eating it for days laugh out loud. Other times I am lucky if I get any. I have learned to be flexible.

Sometimes he meets friends, sometimes he just picks up something. Other times he drives a long distance to get middle Eastern, Thai or even a pizza. He does like to try new things.

I live in a “HOA” but no rules are followed. When I bought it, the realtor told me I don’t know if the HOA rules are followed anymore. He says they usually fall apart. What you’re sense. I know some of the people who bought earlier resent that and I can understand that.

I'm sure those days are gone forever. Remember the gas wars? I used to.fill up my car for $5.00. A cup of coffee at the VA in the 60s was a nickel. Guess people who have the space will have to have vegetable gardens. Wish we had a Braums in our town. The nearest one is over 30 miles away. They have my favorite frozen yogurt -Cappaccino.Chocolate Chunk.

I went to town this morning to pick up prescriptions that will last 6-12 months and for feed for Billy. A sack of sweet feed, 50 lbs.. Was over 10. I am sure that is a lot more than the last I bought. When I got home and parked Billy got up and came over for his feed.. I must have told him where I was going and for what. Glad to be home. I did see a woman at the pharmacy who used to work at the feed store. They are giving flu shots but don't think I'm recovered enough for that. No covid shots there.

Darwin told me some solar panel company is wanting ,to lease ten acres a mile or so north of his house for $40,000. We talked about what it would do to the land. And I don't think he is going to do it. They already have a big field of it about three miles north. There is a huge electric line 2 miles north of me so the solar panel field has to.be close to it. The land would be ruined for cattle or farming. Hate that things like that are happening. Saw several grow houses on the way to town.

Ron, my first New car, a 1965 Mustang, cost $2100. The new Corvettes can cost up to $I82,000.

I had mentioned already that my high resolution CT scan showed pulmonary fibrosis but had not received any results of the pulmonary function test. Since it had been over a week since I received results if CT scan and PFT was done the same day, I decided to call yesterday. After calling i was put on hold for several minutes only to find out the Dr had not read the PFT yet and the nurse would talk to him and get back with me. Dr's nurse called the morning stating my Dr said the scaring was not as bad as previous test show and we would discuss my options on my next appointment December 2nd.

I have been thinking about what was told to me and now even more confused. I was under the impression that scaring in the lungs could not be reversed and could only be treated to slow down the advancement. I am not a medical expert, but have had 11 surgeries in my lifetime and do my research. Any thoughts from my nurse friends on the porch?

Lorita, you must have known someone paying $2100 for your 65 mustang when I had to pay $3200 for mine and the salesman was my mother's cousin.

They tried to vote for a HOA when we bought our last home in Louisiana, but it was voted down.

    Carl, See you tommorow!

Ron, I'm looking forward to it!

I have read that you can raise sheep under solar panels but not goats. Goats will eat the insulation off the electric cables, but sheep will not. It would be better than mowing around the solar panels to keep weeds and volunteer trees from shading them. I do know that there is a man in Springfield who has elevated solar panels all over his small backyard and raises a garden under them. I met him in a tire store where he was getting new tires for his electric car. Maybe Darwin should say "Make it $45,000 and I'll keep it mowed for you."

When I was in high school a new Corvette cost $4,500. I couldn't afford one then and I can't afford one now! One of my friends has a Corvette roadster with a salvage title that she bought for $15,000. Not practical transportation, but a nice toy. If a person just had to have a Vette, that might be an affordable way to go.

The sun is setting. I'm going to put something together for supper. TTYL

Ron. You probably had air conditioning and all the bells and whistles. I didn't and don't remember if it was an automatic. I paid about $3400 a couple of years later when the Cougars came out and it it was automatic with air.

I don't know if these panels are elevated. I doubt the girls would stand under them for shade - that's what trees are for. Mike says they dig trenches and put in concrete. I wouldn't want them on the place at all. If a person did, maybe they could add in the contract to get electricity free of charge.

I think Billy is walking better. He has four more days of medicine. I gave him some creep and sweet feed and more hay a while ago and he was ready. I need to figure out how to feed him this winter since he won't eat with the others but will eat hay with them. They do get rambunctious when you feed.

I think I may go to bed pretty soon. Watching nature now. Anxious for you gentlemen to meet tomorrow. Don't forget to take pictures for us. Good night.

Carl - I'm glad you're going to the griefshare class, it's probably very good.

Iris - Thanks! And I love the skeleton!

    I missed National Dessert Day.

JeriLynn - Whew, I'm glad it's not my imagination about clothing sizes. And yeah, sizes are all over the map. I have things that range from extra-small (and fit perfectly), to mediums (which fit perfectly). It's one of the reasons why I like Black Milk as a company - their sizes are fairly true, and I can order something and know that it will fit.

And thank you about my hair. 🙂 It feels like "me".

HB - Yes, "vanity sizing" - that's kind of how it feels.

Maybe teachers coming to reunions is a west coast thing. Various teachers have shown up at any reunion I've ever been to.

Ahhh, the "uniform mom." Our band uniforms were all rented, so we were good on that front, but there were a couple of "uniform moms" who made all of the uniforms for the drill team. I'm not sure where the majorettes uniforms came from.

The names of those paint colors made me LOL.

I've always avoided HOA meetings like the plague. I went to a couple of them when we inherited my parent's house. It was as you say - kind of rabid and not willing to tolerate any change. So glad we sold that house.

Iris and Carl - jealous of your good interactions with an HOA.

I missed National Cheese Curd Day too - but I'm okay with that.

Beth - That's a lot of banana bread!! It'll be great for your get together this weekend.

Lorita - You're not verbose - you're very interesting. I've never spent any time on a farm and I know nothing about cows, but the way that you describe everything gives me a window into that lifestyle. I find it all interesting.

Zetta - I'm glad your first impressions of Boise are good. And getting out of the Arizona heat will be good for all of you!!

Albertson's is a pretty reasonable store. We don't have one near us anymore, but when I lived in Santa Cruz it was my "go to".

And yay for us with purple and blue hair! Keeps us young. 🙂

Carl and Lorita - My first car was a Datsun B210 hatchback (I'm sure I have a photo of it somewhere). It got almost 50 mpg. I loved that car, but it had no get up and go. I'd have to take running starts to get up a hill. When the Honda CRXs came out I was practically first in line to get one. My dream car is a Porsche Targa (any year in the 1970s). Those things can go for over $100k so I doubt I'll ever have one.

My new 1973 SuperBeetle cost $2300. Car payment was $59.

Ron, I don't like that you have to wait for over a month to get the results of your tests. The doctor should have the results of your pulmonary function tests now. I dont know what to tell you. Are you comfortable enough to wait that long? Do you have enough medication?

Nevertheless, enjoy your visit with Carl tomorrow!

Good afternoon, rockers. I am sorry that I have been out of touch. October 4 marked the first anniversary of my husband’s death, and I have been struggling. Last weekend’s nor’easter suited me perfectly, for it was a good excuse to stay home and pull the tent flaps tight. I was hoping it would hurt less in year two, but that has not happened. I still feel like all the color in my world went with him.

But I am trying to ease back in, so a few notes…

Carl and Ron, what a great picture. So glad the face-to-face meet-up happened!

Zetta, glad you finally made it to Boise. That must have been an interesting drive with all your animal companions.

Lorita, I love reading your posts about Billy and Rusty and the girls. You are so knowledgeable about farming and animal caretaking, and it is all new to me. Please don’t slow down your posting!

Eaglemom, I hope your DH continues to improve. He deserves some better days.

HB, loved the dinosaur pic with your son. Those were some scary teeth!

And Gothic G, you are reminding me of my trip to the polls to vote in lower Manhattan in 2008. There was a woman with purple hair there, too.

Wishing all a good day. I am not always posting, but I’m always reading.

Really a good picture of our two handsome porch fellas. So glad you two got to meet and are planning for more meetings.

I have been out of internet until late today. Found out probably Rusty chewed on a wire at 3 a.m. this morning.

Glad you all don't mind hearing about farm life. My friend, Karen, said she had learned more than she ever wanted to know about cows. See you all tomorrow. Good night.

Carl and Ron — great pic!! Thank you for posting it. I'm glad you guys are going to be able to spend some time hanging out together.

tigersmom - Anniversaries are hard. Pulling the tent flaps up sounds like a good thing to do. In a similar vein, I had a weird thing happen to me a few months after my sister passed away. My s.o. and I went to Hawaii for our first vacation in I don't know how long. Usually when we go there (not that we go all the time), we hike, we snorkel - we're both pretty active. This last time, we did some snorkeling, but mostly I hung out at the pool, something I never do. But that was all I had in me at the time, so I just accepted it.

Lorita - I'm mostly an urban girl, so farm life is very foreign to me - but I love learning about it from you.

I'm finally feeling like I'm catching up from our trip last week. It was good to see everyone at the reunion, but stuff piles up.

I've been to the gym three times this week — working on those pull-ups! I'm still on the assisted pull-up machine, but it feels like I'm getting closer. I'll be going to the gym tomorrow and I'm planning on using the rowing machine. It's kind of intimidating to me, but no time like the present, right?

Last night my s.o. was hanging out on the board game geek website (if you like board games, that's the site for you!), and he saw that there's going to be a crowd funding (probably a kickstarter) campaign for a legacy version of the game Terraforming Mars. We both love that game, so we are in. The "legacy" versions of board games are ones that you only get to play once, and then you're done. One game can last months and months, so it's not as wasteful as it sounds. We played a legacy version of the game Pandemic with friends and it was a lot of fun - especially when the rules tell you something like - rip up a card! 😮 It took us about six months to play the whole game.

Now I'm off for an exciting evening of writing. 🙂

Great pic Ron and Carl, it feels good to all of us that you met and will meet again. Who knows what two intelligent, handsome, gentlemen can come up with in the future….

Lorita, this wannabe farmer loves hearing your stories. I would miss hearing about Billy if you didn't share. Extra bonus - I am able to still share your stories about him to my DW - as she grew up on a ranch/farm and loves hearing about the girls and Billy.

Went to a play in Springfield with DIL and GS tonight. Really didn't enjoy it and we left early.

Carl and I also exchanged phone numbers which i wish was possible for more front porch rockers. I know many times its been a worry for us when we haven't heard from someone in awhile. Now at least unless we both disappear we have a way of finding Ron and Carl when they go missing.

Thank you all for the compliments. Ron is the well-groomed man in the cap.

Ron and I have a lot in common, about the same age etc. Now that we live 30 miles apart instead of two States apart, we can see each other pretty frequently.

GG, terraforming Mars sounds like a good idea. What about terraforming Earth and keeping it habitable for humans?

I accepted a bid today to terraform my yard. With the storm damage to the trees, the age of some of the shrubs, and the general neglect I gave it this summer, it needs a lot of work. The tree man recommended the 20' blue spruce be replaced with Norwegian fir, which I really like and he says is better adapted to our humidity. I had wanted a blue spruce since I was a teenager and now I have had one, so I'm ready for something else. I will miss that spruce though. I received a lot of compliments on it. In fact, the man across the street planted one in his front yard last year, which is the sincerest form of flattery.

It's nearly 10 PM here, so good night!

Iris - Yes, those are all real games on board game geek. So many games, so many discussions about the games. You can easily drown on that site. If you saw Frosthaven on that site, that's a really popular game. I haven't played it, but I have friends who spend ridiculous amounts of time playing it. Another popular one is Mysterium. It's like Clue (which I also love) only with ghosts. It's very pretty and dream-like. I think Peggy would have liked that game, she was a big Clue player.

I love Scrabble!! Monopoly is good too. LIFE — hmm, is that the one where you amass children and fit them in cars? If so, I wasn't so wild about that game. The children were creepy.

Carl - Yes! We should keep terraforming Earth to keep it habitable. As I think about it, our yard could do with a bit of terraforming.
