    Good morning.

The autocorrect function can be so amusing sometimes, but also complete gibberish at other times.

Beth, I have been reading mostly at night, to try to wind down before bedtime. I like to read mysteries, family stories or biographies. Earlier this year I read a biography of Benjamin Franklin, it went into detail about his input into the founding of our nation. I just read a book about an American woman journalist who was sentenced to eight years in prison in Iran under false accusations of being a spy, but she was abruptly released after world pressure.

Now that you mentioned reading, there was a time in my illness when I could not read a book because I could not follow a storyline. I could not remember what happened on a page. But now I can remember! I give thanks to my neurologist and of course to God for healing my brain.

I also like to watch historical videos on YouTube, also health videos. I am working on eating a whole food plant based diet for health reasons. I say working on, because I am not ready to totally give up meat, eggs and dairy yet. But I have cut way back.

I miss those members too. Perhaps they are busy with holiday preparations. It seems that Thanksgiving snuck up, I wasn't even thinking about it. But I called my friend back and accepted her invitation to Thanksgiving dinner.

The sky is partially cloudy today after the rain, the air smells clean.

Adam (my cat) is eating poorly now, he threw up again. I have a hard time getting the prednisone into him, because he grits his teeth. I tasted it myself and it tastes sweet but nit bad. I suppose I'll have to just kerp trying.

    Good afternoon all.

Lorita. Sorry about your car problems, there has to be a way to get rid of those rats, so they don't continue to cause problems. Hopefully the winter will not be too hard on you. Law and Order is not on today, so I'm back to Wagon Train.

Beth. I'm keeping just as busy as I want to be. I have never been one to be lazy, but i have been slowing down a bit, I guess thats what happens when you turn 80. When the clean, newness wares off this house we are in, we will be looking for a monthly housekeeper.

Iris. Socializing is something I am not interested in. I don't think that is something I could ever change. I'm ok with a few people, I never would be able to travel like you do. I'm jealous that you travel the way you do and enjoy it. Enjoy your Thanksgiving, even if your alone. I think the kids and I are just having a meal delivered.

GG. Enjoy yourself in San Francisco. I always liked going there. The last time I was there, was when The Argent was on strike, many years ago. I was a auditor in the hospitality industry so, I was flowen in from Oregon and escorted across the picket line for a 10 day stay, to do the auditing.

    Hugs to all Zetta

I just mothballed under the hood, in the back and under the seats. I taped the packets under the Hood. Guess I will smell Iike moth balls.but that's okay if it works. There was already a packet of them under the hood. It's nice and clean after they detailed it so guess it's time to put in all the mats this weekend. I don't mind the smell of peppermint so will spray and respray that.

Stormy and I just went to the mailbox and the main road is muddy.WM delivery is due this afternoon.

Called the Health Dept. And WM about vaccines so will get my flu shot Monday if all goes well. Must can't make myself get both at one time but will think more about if.

    good evening

Lorita I had my flu and my Covid vaccine. I got them together, before too long I hope to remember to get T dap and RSV.

I had an ocular migraine yesterday that was interesting. I have had them in the past, but didn’t know what they were. They were not quite as intense and didn’t last as long as the one did yesterday. I never thought to mention it at the eye doctor. But yesterday after that happened it lasted about 30 to 45 minutes. I thought OK I probably should call the eye doctor. So I did and she knew exactly what it was, but she checked my retina and everything to make sure and they were fine so now I know how to know the difference if it’s your retina, she said you will see a flashing light like a camera flash. This was more like a kaleidoscope Pretty interesting. They call it an ocular migraine, but I did not have a headache, but I did have what I would call sinus pressure around that eye.

I just finished my supper. It was roast and potato. My nephew left me a big cookie so I made a and after I get the dishes done I’m gonna relax with my cookie my enjoy that.

I don’t see many strange things but one night I did see a strange thing. But later on, I wondered if it was the space station I forget what made me wonder that. I’ve never seen it again.

Hope everyone gets a good nights rest

Mint I've had ocular migraines for about 50 years. Not on a regular basis and.not often. I think I may have had one or wo headsches afterwsrds. Mine starts with a tiny gray spot without vision then something very small with lights like a boomerang appears. It gets bigger and bigger until it goes.out.of my.visual field.

I think we lost a.baby today. I have been watching a cow on the other side of the pond this afternoon. She was alone and grazing. I thought she had the baby laying down to gain strength. About half an hour ago she quit grazing and walked over where I thought the baby might be. She stood there, very still for 10-15 minutes. Just like the baby was nursing. But now I know she was grieving for her baby. Then she turned around and walked away alone. If It wasn't muddy I would have driven over to check. I always feel so sorry for a cow when they lose their baby. I think I may have seen her earlier today and I thought she looked like she was.going to calve. Sad afernoon. In the past when a cow lost her.baby I always made a point of finding her and talking to her. To me they always look so sad when they watch the other babies.

I'm sorry about the calf, Lorita. It's a sad thing when the little ones don't make it.

We had an early Thanksgiving meal today at the senior center, with turkey etc. One of the men makes apple butter every year and gives a lot of it to us. He brought 71 pints this year, we drew lots for it, and I got one. Yum!

SIL (my brother's widow) called a few minutes ago. She usually goes to her sister's home in Arkansas for Thanksgiving, but SIL has been ill so they are bringing food to her house and inviting DS and me. I am thankful for the company. I wasn't really looking forward to sitting with DS at one end of my dining room table in a quiet house.

Yes, the $40 personal property tax bill was just for the car, a 2012 Nissan worth maybe $2,000. My real estate tax is frozen since I am a senior, but it is several thousand dollars. My homeowner's insurance is going up by a third next year, and some other insurance companies are raising premiums by even more. This is a reflection of the large losses imposed by the fires and floods we have faced recently in other parts of the country. Health insurance goes up every year too. Sigh

Lorita - so far, so good, with all of our plans. My hair is purple and silver/white. She purposely leaves silver/white here and there because I like it. 🙂 I'm not running away from my natural non-color, I just want to have fun with it.

I'm so sorry about the cow losing her baby. That's so sad.

Iris - Peggy's friend D (part of Team Peggy), loves to play Bunco. I'd never heard of it until she mentioned it. It sounds like a lot of fun.

Beth - I'm a reader! I haven't read The Road, but I've heard of it. I think they made a movie of it. I've heard good things about it.

One of my favorite recent reads was Station Eleven - also a post-apocalyptic novel (also a mini-series). But it's not depressing. It's kind of bittersweet and hopeful.

And yes, San Francisco is where I ran my non-profit (privacy law focused). I just saw V today - our elderly friend who has dementia. He was perky today, which was nice to see.

Zetta - I'm glad you're enjoying your new home. I can well imagine all the things you want to adjust, fix, and arrange. It's exciting.

Carl - My dad had very low property insurance because he was a disabled vet. His property bill was an eye-popping $62 for the year. In California you're allowed to split your bill in half, so my friend asked me if we were going to pay all of it at once, or split it. 😄 When we took over the property (my brother, sister, and me) the taxes went up to about a thousand dollars. California also has Prop 13 which freezes the property tax rate at whatever year you bought the house. So even at a thousand dollars, our taxes were artificially low.

As for me, everything is just humming along. We went to to a Korean restaurant last night with my cousin. I was able to get a big bowl of this wonderfully spicy vegan soup. It was so good!

Today I saw my former law partner - who is going to Antarctica in Feb!! And V, who is doing …. okay.

    Tonight's Death Guild. 🙂💀

Oh my gosh, I'm so happy! I found out tonight that one of my favorite restaurants here that closed awhile back has sort of reopened. It has a different name, but the menu is 80% the same. This is fantastic. It used to be called Cha Cha Cha (or Cha3 as some of us called it) and they served Caribbean food. They had really excellent sangria. So now they're called Sangria & Salt. Next time I make it to SF, I'm going there - pronto.

They've certainly spiffed it up judging by the photos.

Good morning. It's just now stopped raining but is still quite dark.

Beth— We're still negotiating Thanksgiving. It's a process. I think the last novel thing I read was "The Covenant of Water". 👍️DH bought me a copy of "Entitled: The Fall of the House of York" which is just weird; I've been grabbing it to read on the stationary bike.

We lost all our ash trees. They had all been volunteers and, TBH, I'm not crushed to have lost them as they were messy and too close to my deck.

It's funny you mention "Boys Life". DH always described our old house as reminding him of scout camp. When we moved into it the attic was filled with copies and all manner of BSA ephemera. Seems the man who converted it to a house from a farm building was the local Scoutmaster. Every once in a while, I'd have a service tech in to deal with plumbing or HVAC and they'd recognize the place and tell me about roasting wienies in my fireplace. The plumber even found an area in the boathouse that had been a bathroom with showers for campouts about 10 years into our time there. There was even a toilet paper holder behind my oil tank.

Ron— I'm sorry your appointment was canceled and your care delayed. That is so frustrating. I hope you are able to be seen by another cardiologist sooner rather than later.

Eaglemom— I hear you on PT becoming something of a lifestyle. It's important but it can consume hours out of your day. It's the one part of my knee replacement to which I do not look forward. The surgeon's PT facility is a 30+ minute drive. DH's favorite diner is nearby so hopefully he'll get something positive out of the drive.

Lorita— Ouch on the cost of your rat repairs. I suspect he's gone. He may have been out foraging when the car was towed or perhaps disappeared after it was in the garage. He's likely not the only area rat so it's best to still use repellents and traps. A friend suggests putted the baited traps in a brown grocery bag and checking by weight rather than looking.

I always do both flu and COVID together. I tend to mount a reaction and one day devoted to feeling poorly is better than two days. It's interesting that your doctor isn't recommending RSV based on your age alone even if you don't have much contact with others. I'm not sure what current guidance on pneumonia vaccine is. I've had 2 different ones, but I know there's a newer one out there and that some older folks with underlying conditions might need boosters. You should get T dap as it protects against pertussis and tetanus if it's been 10 years since your last jab.

Zetta— It sounds like you're nicely settled in your new digs.

Mint— Do you find your ocular migraines related to weather at all? DH gets them and they tend to be related to a change in barometric pressure for him.

Judith— Franklin was quite a character and very much of his time which included The Enlightenment. Jefferson was also a proponent of deism.

Are you enjoying the Ken Burns "The American Revolution"? We've been watching an hour here and there all week. It's been interesting for us as many of the scenes were filmed in areas familiar to us.

Gothic G— Another busy trip for you? How is V doing?

Isn't it wonderful when an old restaurant favorite is brought back to life?

    ______________________________________________________________________________

Busy day here. I need to have eyes on my mom early. I stopped by yesterday to drop off some pot roast I had made and she looked awful. Winded and ashen. Not good. I slapped the pulse ox on and sure enough she was in the low 80s. Ugh. I had her do a nebulizer tx and put her on 3 liters of O2 which got her into a safe range for the evening. We'll revisit this morning to see if she needs IV steroids which will mean a visit to the ED. She'd been great on Wednesday; it is remarkable how her condition can go south so quickly.

The wife of DS's Cub/Scout Master died Wednesday night. She'd been fine one day and was gone from a MRSA form of sepsis. The family is obviously shell-shocked. She was quite a character and the axis around which her family functioned. I was surprised that one of her sons called to let me know last night. The funeral is on Tuesday about 60 miles away. I hope mom is stable enough that I can go.

Time to pack DS's lunch. He's got a day of holiday merriment ahead. At least he's trainman which is his preferred role at the railroad.

I hope all have a pleasant day.

Good morning, porch friends. I am sorry that i have been out of contact for so long.

To be honest, it has been a very quiet month, and i have not felt that i had anything very interesting to post about.

We made it through another marathon at the beginning of the month. There were 55,000 runners this year, and the majority were running it for the first time. I am not a runner, but I really admire all who attempt this. We are pretty loud in our support for everyone who flies by.

A lot of this month has been consumed with getting the belongings on DH’s side of the basement to good homes. I have been unable to get rid of most of the clothing he actually wore. That is still upstairs. But my husband was a bit of a clothes horse, and a bit of a collector, so there were several giant bins in the basement that needed attention. I found a charity that picks up clothing (rare in NYC), but many other things have had to be driven to their final destination. So there have been trips to the city animal shelter, Goodwill, an animal rescue in Brooklyn and another charity i like in Manhattan. Last Saturday, my neighbor and i took an old stereo speaker and a bunch of dead electronics to a special waste disposal site at the sanitation yard in Brooklyn. Getting rid of stuff is complicated here. I envy those of you with dumps and freecycle areas.

Doing this job has spurred me to get rid of my own excess, too. I have way less clothing than DH did, but way more cooking equipment. I am busily giving away or donating extra appliances and pans. There will be no spouse to do this for me, so i am trying to pare down now.

Lorita, i am so sorry for your rodent troubles. What a challenge and expense that has been! Did you ever figure out how to unsplit your screen? If you are using an ipad, there are three tiny dots at the top center of your screen. Make sure full screen is checked. How kind of you to sit by the cows after they lose a baby. That is really good of you to do. Speaking of babies, do you mean Octomom? She’s the one who had eight at one time.

BethL, thanks for the shoutout that is getting me back to posting. I read like a fiend. I just finished Louise Penny’s The Black Wolf and Arundhati Roy’s Mother Mary Comes to Me. I am about to start Adam Johnson’s The Wayfinder, which is 860 pages long!

HB, I hope Mom looks and feels better this morning. I have never heard of vanilla pasta. I am watching The American Revolution, too. Lots of Deists among the founding fathers.

Iris, I am so sorry to hear about Adam’s eating issues. I have lost every single cat except my present two to cancer, and those eating struggles are really hard. If you can get the prednisalone into him, it may help.

GG, do you shop at Trader Joe’s? I am in love with their Kimbap, a microwaveable Korean rice roll with tofu, carrots and cucumber. It is vegan, and it is delicious. I am not vegan, but my two sisters are, and I do a lot of plant-based cooking.

Sorry for anybody i have missed. It feels good to check in again.

Morning, cool and cloudy here. Good to see your post, Tigersmom. Charles was a clothes horse, too. it took me ten years to get his clothing donated. I still have a short sleeved summer suit he.loved just cannot let it go. Now I need to do the same with my clothes. When I go all those things will go in a dumpster.

The cow who lost her baby is one of Mikes so don't really know her like I know the ones who were mine. The first thing I did this morning was look to see if she was over there -thank goodness she wasn't.

A couple of years ago I noticed a cow who seemed upset. Got in the Gator and went to her.. I could tell she wanted me to follow.her. She went way down in the pasture and I followed til she stopped. She had taken me to her baby who was not alive. The baby was so immature it didn't have hair but did have tiny hooves. We stayed there and I talked.to her, then we both left. She just wanted me to know about her baby. They have feelings and grieve after a loss, either of a baby or one of the herd. If you watch them you can tell when something is wrong..

I will stop for now. The Sooners are playing Missouri, Ron and Carl!

    Good morning.

Lorita, I used to love the smell of mothballs. My mother used to put them in the cedar chest with the winter clothes over the summer. I didn't realize until years later that mothballs are toxic.

It's sad about the cow losing her baby. Do they get mated naturally or by artificial insemination? When I was in college, one of my classmates, who lived on a farm, told me that one of his jobs was to insemination cows. Ugh!

I had planned to get my flu shot this weekend, but I have too much to do. I usually plan to be out of commission for at least 24 hours afterwards because I always develop a fever from the shot.

I saw a video heading about Octomom and her but I didn't click on it because I wasn't interested.

My property tax is due in early December. I have to remember!

GG, my roommate from my Kenya trip wants to go to Antarctica and she keeps asking me to go with her. No, I'm not going anywhere that's cold and frozen! A few years ago a ship of tourists had to be rescued because their ship got stuck in the frozen ice for a couple of months. No, not for me!

HB, it's good that you were able to catch your mom in time. People who become hypoxic may not recognize when they are becoming hypoxic. We did an exercise when I was in the USAF to simulate low oxygen in an aircraft, and to be aware of when we needed to put on the oxygen masks. A pilot may be unaware and become unconscious. So they have to put on the mask as soon as they suspect that the oxygen is low. The AF pilots are very well trained. I wasn't a pilot, but I needed to know what their training was.

A friend's sister died suddenly of sepsis. She had not appeared very ill beforehand. She had horses, perhaps she got MRSA from the barn.

Tigersmom, good for you in getting stuff out of the house. Why is it so hard for us to let go?

My travel group is planning a trip to NYC next December. I'm contemplating going. But I am wary of NY falling even more into chaos by that time.

Zetta, I decided to accept my friend's invitation to Thanksgiving dinner next week. I'm going to bring a vegetable tray. I wanted to bring cider, but they don't like cider. Who ever heard of not liking cider? I think that's un-American.

I'm going to Home Depot today. They have some nice gifts.

Lorita, YouTube says to restore your Fire Tablet screen to full screen you place your finger on the small white arrow in the middle of the vertical bar and drag all the way to the right or left. I found several videos by googling “how to restore full screen on Amazon fire tablet”. There are also videos that show you how to disable split screen function so it doesn’t happen again.

    Good afternoon. Beautiful day here.

On the good news front, DH's neck seems to have responded to this last injection. His head isn't pushed out forward nearly as much. Also the tilt to the right isn't as bad. (The surgeon thinks the tilt is his body's response to pain - the pinched nerve.) I'll take it. I heard a noise in the bathroom earlier and he was standing in his closet whistling away, deciding what to wear. I loved hearing that - it made my heart happy.

HB I'm glad you popped in to check in on your mom. The pulse ox is always what I do first when I think anything is off with DH. Hopefully she'll be just fine.

Alumni football later on today and Kansas City tomorrow. Time to get busy.

    Let's be safe everyone….

    Good evening

Tetanus,Diptheria,Pertussis (whooping cough). I am around a lot of people including kids at church. I have had the pneumonia vaccine.

Carl glad you and your son will have people to be with.

HB I am not sure. I don't have them a lot and had never had one last that long.

Sorry about your friend HB. That is how sepsis is. I was fine at 2:30p and at 4:30 I was in critical condition. I was recently talking to someone with that same experience also.

HB, I have.had ocular.migraines for at least 50 years. I haven't noticed any correlation between the headaches and weather. There may be but I don't remember noticing it.

The football game was.good- OU won! Eagle, he last time I looked Texas was ahead of Arkansas so assume they won.

Seems like all I did today was feed cats, dogs and me. I have a neighbor who will give me cats if I decide to go that way. But I know the GPs would.kill them if they got into the yard and I can't have that happen so hope the moth balls work.

About ready for bed so will say good night.

Judith, I left NYC in 1982 for California because NY was dangerous for a woman alone. The Guardian Angels were on the subways so I felt a little bit safe there, but the streets were not safe at all. Even for men. Tourists are prime targets for those who want to cause chaos. I have to decide by Monday.

    It's late now, good night.

Mom was admitted for IV steroids. The hospitalist assigned knows her well and took the time to re-read her chart and refresh his memory. The triage and ED nurse were both of the pit-bull no-nonsense variety which is reassuring.

She was transferred upstairs around 5:30 last night. I'll swing by after I do some laundry here.

Sort of foggy and chilly this morning. Groceries were just delivered and are still on the porch. Having my juice and getting ready for the morning news shows. GPs are just waking up. Cats have been fed and are quiet-for.now.

Iris, good luck on your decision. I have no desire to go to a big city or a small one for that matter. Will stick to the country. Back later. I think there are some powdered donuts out on the porch-.might be breakfast today.
