I was just watching a standup comedian named Andy Huggins. He tells jokes about being old. He's several years younger than I am but doesn't look it so I'll let that pass. Things I learned about dating after 65:

0 Metrosexual has nothing to do with taking your date to the back seat of the city bus.

0 Senior women are great because their student loans are probably paid off, and you don't have to worry about meeting the parents.

0 There is a dating website for seniors. It is called Carbon Dating.

There's more, but I forgot. TTYL

GG, thanks for the reminder about the Copper River Salmon. I'll look for it.

I missed going inside the Tar Pits, but I did see the Mastodon figure trapped in the tar on the outside. This museum will be closed for renovations for a while.

Carl, I'll look for the Carbon Dating site. 😉

For some reason, I thought next weekend was Memorial Weekend. No wonder the roads were so crowded. Thanks for the reminder to put out my flag tomorrow.

I had one of the worst days of my life today. Perhaps I shouldn't be so dramatic, because there is much worse going on in the world. But this involves parking. I drove 45 minutes up to Century City, to Westfield Mall, which is a huge mall, probably the biggest I've ever been in. I spent 30 minutes driving around the huge parking garage, searching for a spot. I finally found a small sign that said additional parking, up a ramp. I had to go up to the 5th level before I could find a spot. This was after driving around in circles several times. Then when I finally found a spot, I was about two blocks away from the restaurant. I had to rush to make the reservation. I was exhausted and wiped out by the time I got to the restaurant. Even there I had to climb two flights of stairs, up teo dpieal staircases. I told the other ladies I am never going back to that place! It was just too much!

I texted my friend who lives near the chemical spill. She lives one block outside of the evacuation zone, so she did not have to evacuate at this time. But she said she has had a headache all weekend. I have not heard any updates on the news. I hope the PTB can get a handle on this situation.

I have to rest up now from that parking ordeal. I moved to my city to avoid parking hassles. If I cant park easily, I will turn around and go back home.

Morning, been awake since 3 thinking about things and what I need to do. Not much on tv at that time so at 5 I got up and fed the cats , gave Stormy a milk bone and some juice for me. Also placed an order with WM to be delivered about 11. Watched the weather - to be 85 today and humid. Rain off and on this week. Alarm is set for 7 so maybe I can get an hours sleep.

Good morning. The rain has finally pushed off here. It's been 3 days of wet and gloomy cancelling all manner of observances (and making my knees ache) locally for a mere 1.2" of rain. The VFW will run their parade this morning but I suspect the only folks joining them will be the marching band's brass and drumline wearing their "Class Bs" (khakis and a blue polo that makes them look like they work at Best Buy) Back in the old days, the VFW made a visit at the town's cemetery, and those at the old Presbyterian Church, Episcopal Church, AME Church, the Methodist Church and wrap up at the old Roman Catholic Church. They cut all the churches in the last couple of years. The Presbyterian Church is where Washington brought the surviving Hessians after the Battle of Trenton and it does have soldiers from the battle buried there.

Gothic G— Up until 3am. I haven't been awake that late outside of an ED situation in decades. Well done, you. I hope the salmon was everything you hoped it would be. How do you prepare it?

Carl— My last gas was $4.419 at Costco. It's closer to $5/gal for regular in my zip code.

We have a car show— mixed classics and hot rods— in town in July. They close down the quaint main street for the day which is fun. The drama club from the high school participates by costuming in the various eras associated with the cars and poses with them. It's a blast.

Lorita— I've had both charging cords and charger blocks die on me, but it's usually the battery that goes first. You can check by trying different cords/blocks and even outlets. The battery might be replaceable if you can remove it easily. The tablet battery probably can be replaced. Around here there are stores that specialize in replacing batteries and cracked screens.

I think folks like what feels familiar to them. I don't want to do the work it would take to grow my own food and make all my family's clothing. My BFF sent me a picture this morning of her granddaughter wearing a romper I'd made for her daughter 34 years ago. It has 2 coordinating prints and rickrack— maybe it's best I don't sew for others. LOL.

Judith— DH and I tapped out not long after where you are— spoiler alert —

just as he was coming for Cromwell (j/k)

Eaglemom— Would your DH enjoy watching footage of old races? Dad sometimes enjoyed watching old football games and classic golf tournaments.

Iris— That parking seems like a nightmare. I don't typically drive to the city anymore unless the place has valet parking. It's the train for me.

The local shopping area has insufficient parking for their mix of restaurants and shopping. And it doesn't help that the police park several old cruisers in the lot as a deterrent. They have a lot of shoplifting at Ulta and Lululemon and have had reports of men looking for teenagers who hang out there. I refuse to even attempt that lot from Friday at 3pm until Monday morning.

    ________________________________________________________

DS is working today. He had passengers from Wales and Uganda on Friday which was pretty cool. DH wants/needs a haircut, and mom needs me to come over and show her how to use her new CD/speaker set up. Again. The unit is very sleek and is controlled by a very small remote control. The print on the instructions is too small for her to read. And her tech-phobic tendencies are complicating this. I bought the extended insurance and assured her she can't break it but she's too timid to just play around with it. Ugh.

DS has his nursing school orientation meeting tomorrow and I have telehealth with my endo to discuss my B12 and T3 issues. Mom will be taking an Uber to get her hair cut. Here's hoping she doesn't end up in NJ again. I'll preorder both rides on her app when I see her today.

    Have a safe one today.

    @Iris L.

I asked about the chemical spill. He sort of laughed when I asked him how dangerous it is. He described it saying "they have a runaway polymerization on their hands". He thought the media was overplaying the risks associated with it and said their biggest problem would be dealing with the massive chunk of plastic they're going to end up with.

He said your friend's headache might be related to the incident if she was exposed to a very strong odor but even then, he didn't think it posed any real risk.

FTR, DH is a chemist who worked at the company that made Plexiglas at the site where his lab was.

On my Watchlist for Netflix: Remarkably Bright Creatures (read the book and loved it), My Octopus Teacher (saw it once, and it was great!), The Penguin Lessons, Untold: Operation Flagrant Foul, Untold: Malice at the Palace

On my Watchlist for Amazon Prime: Several seasons of Leave it to Beaver, Scarpetta (I adore Patricia Cornwall's books!), Secretariat, Harry and Snowman, A Sunday Horse, Meet the Parents (one of the most hilarious movies ever)

Not sure I'll get to them all! I also have 10 books to read and Jill Biden's book is arriving next week. Currently reading Tim Russert's "Big Russ and Me." It's about him and his father.

Beth,I watch an hour of Leave it to Beaver every morning. And, it's on during the night same episodes. Times were different then. June always asked her husband to have a talk with the boys instead of doing it herself. Also the dresses, jewelry and heels.

I don't think Leave it to Beaver was truly representative of how real families lived. I think it was more aspirational than typical.

My mom was the epitome of a ladylike suburban stay-at-home mom, and I assure you she wasn't cleaning the house in a freshly pressed shirtdress, nylon stockings, 4' pumps with a strand of Mikimoto pearls around her neck to do chores around the house.

In fact, when we watched the show, she took great delight in how ridiculous it all was.

Carl - HA! The carbon dating site for seniors.

Iris - Parking. I'm so with you. I'm sorry it turned into such an ordeal.

HB - the salmon was fantastic. You don't need to do much for Copper River salmon, and we didn't. We used a light rub, baked it at 425 for about 15 minutes, and it was perfectly done.

Totally agree that Leave it to Beaver was aspirational for family life. I always felt that way about The Brady Bunch too.

Beth - Scarpetta is on my list as well. I've heard of My Octopus Teacher, but I haven't seen it. With all the rave reviews here, I'll bump it up on my list.

I'm currently reading two books - Deadline by Mira Grant. It's the sequel to Feed, the journalist/zombie book I finished a bit ago. And Backtalker - an American Memoir by Kimberlé Crenshaw. I read her law review paper on intersectionality when I was in law school (it was very good), and her memoir is showing us how she got there. She coined the term, btw. I like her taste in early '70s music too - "Joy to the World" by Three Dog Night and "Smiling Faces Sometimes" by the Undisputed Truth.

We're back to overcast and rain today. But that's okay. I ordered some fleece leggings online and they arrived a couple of days ago. I'm wearing them now, and I'm nice and warm. Loving them.

I had a great boxing day today - 50 min of boxing. I am beyond thrilled that I can box for 50 minutes.

HB, the risk of explosion from the chemical spill has reduced, and the majority of the evacuees have returned home. Apparently this isn't the first time this plant has had a significant problem.

My favorite classic TV show was The Honeymooners, because my father was a bus driver in Brooklyn, so I could relate.

Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day. This started after the Civil War in South Carolina, when people decorated the graves of the fallen with flowers.

Century City is a very upscale area in West Los Angeles. Waymos are prevalent in thd area. Here are a couple of photos taken from inside my vehicle at a red light:

    1000007335.jpg

    No driver

    1000007337.jpg

Just picture your own town full of Waymos driving passengers around.

GG, Wow, boxing for 50 minutes! That's amazing!

Iris and GG - Waymo, no go here! Not interested! Parking downtown area - I recently got a parking ticket because I couldn't figure out how to pay the meter. There were 3 ways to pay it. One was the app. I downloaded it but couldn't find where you would pay. Another was at a nearby kiosk but it wasn't functioning and I don't remember the other. So I didn't pay and I got a $20 ticket.

Relaxing day planned here. I do plan to go to the gym and have a couple of other things to do, but not too busy.

Ron, Lou was a beauty. I know you miss her greatly.

Good morning. Some sun here finally.

Gothic G— That's a long boxing workout. Yikes.

Iris— I'm glad folks were able to move back home after the evacuation. Sadly, I am not surprised that some saw it as an opportunity to loot. We used to have issues with that after major floods in my old neighborhood; randos with pickup trucks would come and try to pick through things we'd washed and left to dry in our own yards.

Ron— That's a lovely picture of Lou.

Beth— I'm sorry about your ticket. The only place I routinely have to pay to park is the train station. They have an app and kiosks. The app isn't great, especially if there's no WiFi and there's often a line of confused first timers using the kiosk. The worst bit is that you have to enter the "code" for the station and that information isn't highlighted as well as it should be. It's almost worth $20 not to be annoyed.

One of my favorite vintage rewatches is Gilligan's Island. The TVs in the waiting room of mom's retina specialist often play reruns. Even as a kid, I knew one needed to suspend belief to enjoy it. Revisiting it is mind-bending. How did they not all have sunburn? Why did Ginger wear a beaded evening gown on a tourist excursion? If the Howell's were so rich, why were they touring with the hoi polloi? I spend entirely too much time thinking about such things.

DS has his nursing program's information session today. I expect he'll come home with an extensive to-do list. I have telehealth at noon to sort out my B12/T3 results.

I also have to do a reboot on mom's POC. When I went over yesterday, she was not doing well at all. She was vague, on the verge of tears and shaking. I suspected she'd been off her O2 (which was 78), so I rechecked in 5 minutes and it was up to 82 on 3L. I switched her to the in-home OC to troubleshoot and her O2 bounced up to 92 (middle of her goal range). The POC isn't putting out any air flow at all. How she didn't notice this is beyond my comprehension. I'm hoping the reboot works, otherwise it's back on the customer service line to have a loaner delivered tomorrow.

Judith, is that a true story? Seems like I have seen something like that on tv, maybe on a nature show. I will read it.

Iris, I wondered if the possible explosion was near you. Scary thing.

Ron, you certainly had a beautiful wife. Your post made me cry. For some reason I'm missing Charles a lot right now.

Last night I started watching Hacksaw Ridge, a war movie.. IT was a WW 2 movie instead of Korea but it made me think about what our soldiers went through in the wars. I have always thought if there was enough differences to go to war, the world leaders should fight it out instead of dragging the whole Countries into it.. If it was that way there would be no wars.

My legs feel like they used to the next day after pur bowling League began for the year, like I have been doing exercises and I haven't. I wonder if it is the progression of the Morton's Neuromas. I know my feet have some neuropathy. It also hurts to bend my right knee very muvh. Guess I'm beginning to fall apart. Back later.

You have to suspend disbelief to enjoy anything on TV. Look at the Beverly Hillbillies and their old truck. I've known lots of hillbillies, and every one of them would have bought a new truck as soon as the money came in. Jed might have kept that beat-up old hat, but the truck would have been replaced as soon as he could drive to Joplin!

Sorry about your legs, Lorita. My bum leg is giving me trouble today and I was able to exercise only a little while before it started going numb and I had to sit down. I'll try to do some more this afternoon.

I'm getting my hearing aids this afternoon. Some people think they make us look old, but I think leaning toward people saying "Huh?" makes us look older.

Carl, if they make you hear better anything is worth it or you could grow long hair to cover your ears. My legs feel better today thanks. I have a recumbent bicycle and I should use it every day Instead of trying to walk on rough ground or in tick invested tall grass. Question- I hardly ever eat an egg, sometimes I scramble them either for me or the GPs.

I bought a dozen Marketside, cage free eggs delivered April 9. I used one a couple of weeks ago when I made Sweetwater's tea cakes. There is no Best By date on the carton. I read about how to freeze them and just now tested them in a bowl of water. None floated and yolks stood up and whites weren't watery and no bad smell. I lightly beat three at a time with a bit of Salt and put them in a zip lock bag. I had 11 left so three bags with three each and one with two. What do you all think about using them, scrambled or in baking?

Ron my heart hurts with yours. Loss of a great love brings with it great sorrow. A difficult price to pay.

Lorita… could be plain ol' arthritis. Try 2 Tylenol.

    • Upgrade your footwear: Switch to shoes with wide toe boxes to prevent your toes from being squeezed. Avoid high heels and completely flat, unpadded shoes like flip-flops.
    • Use orthotics: Add soft, shock-absorbing insoles or metatarsal pads to your shoes. These inserts lift and separate the bones in your forefoot, which relieves pressure directly off the pinched nerve.

Ron, that is a lovely photo of Lou. What was Lou short for?

Beth, in the elevator of the parking garage were instructions for paying for parking. I had to scan the ticket for the QR code, which brought up a website. Then I could pay with my credit card. It was very easy, once I knew what to do. Many places are going to QR codes for ordering or for paying.

I've got to run put to the post office before it closes. BBL.

Iris, first name Letha, middle name Lou Nell. She had always been called Lou or Lou Nell and didn’t even know her name was Letha until she started school. Teacher kept calling Letha on roll call without anyone answering, the teacher finally asked her why she wasn’t answering. She went home that day and asked her mother and that’s when she knew her name was Letha. She never liked to be called Letha and all paperwork except for birth certificate has Lou.

Iris - I didn't know that Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day. It makes sense though. When I mentioned it to my s.o., he knew about it, and knew that it started in Charleston. I had no idea.

I'm not sold on Waymos either. There are fleets of them in San Francisco. When I'm there I see them everywhere.

Ron - that's a very pretty picture of Lou.

HB - The things about Gilligan's Island that always tripped me up were - how did Mary Ann make coconut cream pies? Did she do that on a campfire? And what about all of their costumes? Like when they did the musical version of Hamlet. Or when Mrs. Howell, Ginger, and Mary Ann did their girl group with their coordinated outfits. Their tiny boat may have been tossed, but it sure was well-stocked!

You've heard the mash-up of the Gilligan's Island theme and Stairway to Heaven, right? It's hilarious.

Lorita - I don't know that I'd use those eggs for baking. I think I'd just scramble them.

I agree with what Judith said about shoes.

Today just kind of evaporated. I had a lot of small tasks, and I got them all done, but they all took an amount of time.
