I hope everyone had a great weekend. Mine was relaxing, which was nice. We had some rain, had some sun, but mostly it was just kind of pleasant - mid 70s during the day, a little chilly at night.
Carl - Ha!!! About Rawhide - I remember that there was a show on TV called Rawhide, but I don't think I ever saw it. I know the theme song though - a band I like, The Men They Couldn't Hang, do a cover of it. If you like The Pogues, you'll like TMTCH, very similar style.
Your fellowship lunch sounds good. I would have avoided the meats, but would have happily loaded up on the sides. For some reason I really like baked beans and I haven't had them in years.
HB - usually king salmon doesn't go on sale, but every once in awhile, if the stars all align …. 🙂 We usually bake our salmon, and depending on what it is, we'll either put on a spicy rub, or a not so spicy rub. We get more than a few different kinds of salmon here, and they each have a different texture. King salmon is kind of dense, but has a light texture, so we usually go easy on the spices with it.
Carl - your cabin by the lake vacation sounds wonderful.
Lorita and Sweetwater- That tea cake recipe looks good, I'm going to try it.
Beth - I made snickerdoodles last night. 🙂 I was in the mood for cinnamon.
I try to wash everything before I cut into it. I guess I got that from my mom.
About beets ….. I love, love, love fresh beets. Pickled or canned, not so much.
I'm going to do my best to get to sleep before midnight, so that I can start the week fresh.

Good morning!
GG, I liked that cover of Rawhide. They snuck a little of Ghost Riders in the Sky into the middle, which was cool. The show Rawhide was probably a little before your time. It was Squint Eastwood's first successful show, after he and Burt Reynolds got fired from Riverboat. The producers of Riverboat decided Eastwood's Adam's apple was too big and Reynolds couldn't act. They were right, but it didn't keep the boys from succeeding in other shows.

I’m the opposite. I only sleep in slips. The way I think is that everyone knows what’s under my skirt anyway.

Good morning, all. We're heading into nine days with rain in the forecast but it's sunny and 76F at the moment. My only plans for the day is to clean the shower stall (I emptied it yesterday) ahead of the plumber coming and to head to the farm stand that sells the Campbell's soup tomatoes. DH and I did a taste test last night— local Beefsteaks from a farm near dad's MCF, orange from a farm near the dairy store and the soup tomatoes which were the clear winners. The others were woody and bland; the soup tomatoes are on the smaller side but fleshy and intensely flavored.
Iris— Are you recovering at home? I hope your return trip was uneventful and that your cats don't give you the cold shoulder.
Sweetwater— I rarely see tea cakes this far north, but any I've seen are almost dainty in size. A lady-like nibble. Almost all baked goods are better with butter. The only exception would be my Aunt Hannah's chocolate chip cookies in which she subbed out half the butter for Imperial stick margarine. She used the old school version of Tollhouse with the teaspoon of water and a small egg.
Beth— I suspect most who like tacos won't miss the lettuce. I'm told we're probably safe with local farm stand and hydroponic lettuce. I've been using a "Little Leaf" hot house— so far, so good.
I wash my melons too. Last week DH came into the kitchen and asked what I was doing. He had no idea that was a thing.
Carl— That fellowship lunch sounds wonderful. I'm always happy to try another family's spin on a classic; I've gotten some great recipes this way. Mom's team Aunt Nellie's. I'm not above enjoying some as a side. I've never met a beet I didn't like.
Lorita— It seems like you have more than your share of data centers. We're supposed to get one about 20 miles south of here on an old industrial site and there's a lot of opposition. Some communities have outlawed them entirely.
Sandwichone— DS is always recycling his pickle brine by adding peppers to it. There's an artisanal pickle purveyor who makes a spicy dill he favors. He tends to be disappointed.
Gothic G— Westerns weren't a thing at my house growing up. I don't know if it was because they were embracing suburbia or considered themselves to be the beat generation but it's a genre that didn't play at my house. Midwestern DH is amazed at my unfamiliarity with such programming. FWIW, I never saw Lawrence Welk until I was married. For me it was like a civilization I was trying to understand. Despite that, DH used to quiz me to see if I could guess the original air date based on costumes, hair and songs— fun times during the PBS fund raisers.

I'm still waiting for a call back to reschedule my hematology appointment. They canceled on me Friday just as the office was closing. If I don't hear back, I stop buy tomorrow when mom's at her appointment in the same building.
I need to sort out dinner.

I reuse pickled beet brine by adding canned beets and letting it sit for a few days. I reuse sweet pickle brine by rinsing dill pickles and adding them. One of my depression-era aunts did that to save money, but I find it makes an interesting sweet pickle flavor.
We have a fellowship lunch once a month. Good food in good company is pretty hard to beat.

Today I'm watching In the Heat of the Night- have been sinceI found it a month ago.
Iffy, I seldom wear a dress or skirt but if and when I do I would feel undressed without a slip - if I can find them.
A couple of weeks ago I bought a watermelon, cut it in half and gave half to.our neighbior. I cut my half in four quarters and ate one. Wrapped the others in cling wrap and kept them in the refrigeratior. Yesterday decided they were too old so put two quarters and some cantaloupe on the back steps and the other quarter and cantaloupe on the front porch. This morning all the cantaloupe was gone. The watermelon had been eaten down to the rind. What do you all think ate them? Rusty and his friend? The yard is fenced. Hope the turtle I saw a few days ago got some.
Alexa just said it is 100 with heat index of 109. Not quite that hot on the porch and there is some breeze. It was nice early, early So the girls stayed out linger than usual. One of the white cows just came out and went to the pond. I am so sore because it was some cooler, I filled the tank and watered. Carried buckets of water from the corral. Yesterday evening I took down the trash- had one really heavy sack. I know, Sandy, I shouldn't do that, should not fill them so full. Paying for it now. I will do better.
HB, it's not just data centers but solar farms north of here. I haven't been up there for over a month but ?Bryson told me there are rows and rows of solar panels already in place. That good land is ruined forever.
I was awake about 2 this morning for an hour so might take a nap. Cats are fed and sleeping and Stormy just ate and went for a couple of minutes to tinkle.
You all try to stay cool- HB, I envy your rain and cool weather.

Good afternoon. I'm back from South Dakota. I slept for 11 hours, trying to catch up on my sleep. My cats are still at the pet hotel, I always give myself extra time without them to rest up from the trip. I want to catch up on what everyone is doing and will post about my trip with photos later.

Glad you're home safe, Iris. Looking forward to your pictures but take your time.
A terrible thing happened this morning in Tulsa. Early this morning a man in a motorized wheelchair was going along the side of a highway with no sidewalk' when a car hit and killed him and didn't stop. A fireman on his way to work saw the man and tried to revive him but was unsuccessful. When a reporter got there and was reporting the wheels were still turning on the overturned chair. There were car parts left on scene so.Police know what kind of car was involved.
On another much better story - over the weekend somewhere in Arkansas a man in a wheelchair was struggling to get across a six lane highway before the light changed. A man, dressed in a Spider-Man costume.(had been to a party) jumped out of his car and got the man across the street, Jumped back in his car and continued on. Just goes to show us that there are all kinds of people, mostly good, thank Heaven.

Pickled beets…canned beets, sugar, vinegar.
Hot today so I will work on ancestry and the bagpipe(not going well).

I'm sure he did, but I don't remember him complaining about it. You marry an 18-year-old, you get learning.
On slips, I rarely wear one. The one I have left is a little small and pretty short, so usually I just figure nobody cares.

I can't even find mine, Sandwich, guess if I wear a dress I will have to wear the long leg panties. Seems like what people are wearing now.
It's 10:30 p.m. and still 92 with 97 heat index. When I was growing up we didn't have sir conditioning so on hot nights like this we would sleep on pallets on the front porch.. We didn't think about snakes or bugs but I would now. Thank goodness for air conditioners. Good night, sleep tight.

Carl - Wikipedia tells me Rawhide was a bit before my time.
I was surprised that both of those guys were in that TV show, they must have been really young.
Iffy49 - I don't wear a lot of dresses or skirts, they're a once in a while kind of thing for me, but I do have a couple of slips. One of them is floor length. I go to goth clubs (not often these days), and I dress for the occasion, so sometimes I need a floor length slip.
HB - we're going to have some rain too - tomorrow for sure, and then again on the weekend.
Westerns weren't a thing at my house either. My grandfather liked to watch Bonanza, Gunsmoke, and The Guns of Will Sonnett.
The only time I saw Lawrence Welk was when I visited my aunt and uncle, which was rare. But - Lawrence Welk was where I first saw an alto sax and I knew I wanted to learn how to play (which I did).
Lorita - that's just way too hot.
Yay, Spider Man!
Gym was good today - full body workout + boxing. I can't ask for more.
I'm in the midst of the long slog of deciding which family photos to keep and what to give to my cousins. I've already gotten rid of all of the dupes, so I'm making progress.

Morning, GG, Clint Eastwood was 29 at the beginning of Rawhide and 35 when it ended. Burt Reynolds wasn't in Rawhide that I know of. The Trail Boss was Eric Fleming who later drowned in a river when he was making a pmovie. Good show. I felt sorry for those cattle having to walk hundreds of miles to a bad end, often without water for a long time.
Going to be another 100+ day. I'm ready for fall and cooler weather but August stands in our way.

On my to do list is going through photos. What a job! I guess I should think of it as a trip down memory lane.

Good morning. It's gray at the moment rain due to start just as we get to mom's PCP appointment. I can never get a handicapped spot there and there's no "drop off" so the plan is to get wet.
Lorita— That's a nice story about Spiderman coming to the rescue. We need more superheroes in our lives.
Iris— I'm glad you're home in one piece. 11 hours of sleep is impressive. I think if I did that, I'd be so stuff it'd take me 10 minutes to get moving once me feet hit the floor. I'm looking forward to pictures when you get the time.
Sandwich— As an 18-year-old bride, your cooking probably wasn't as big a priority for your DH.
Gothic G— I don't envy you sorting pictures. Ugh. It's a lot of work. In a sense I'm kind of lucky I don't have boxes and boxes of them. My DH's brothers mostly raided their mom pictures, so he doesn't have all that many. My mom gave me a bunch of pictures and report cards just before my son was born which we promptly lost in the floor that destroyed the house as a result, there aren't many of me either. DS recently came across some pictures he took when we were first dating— he and my niece were transfixed by photos of me younger than they are and DH which dark hair.
I was at the fish counter Saturday getting some flounder and saw they had King salmon for $32/lb. Yikes! It looked gorgeous.
_____________________________________________________________________
Three random teens knocked on my door and offered to weed all my beds— which were out-of-control— for $300. They did a surprisingly good job; better than the professionals the landscaper had last year. It's late, but I still need to get DS to trim the shrubs and get some mulch down.
I need to sort out dinner. Last night we had BLTs since I was able to score some lovely tomatoes. The lady who runs the stand was there and also had cut flowers and hot sauce her son made. DS loved the hottest sauce (it was too much for DH) and I have some pretty sunflowers on my table. win/win.
Have a pleasant day.

HB $300? How many flower beds do you have? Carol'S oldest daughter weeds her flower bed for her since she can no longer do it. Wow, $32. A pound.Good thing I'm a vegetarian. Someone a day or so ago mentioned orange tomatoes. Those were my favorites- not as acidic. We use to raise them. Also really like orange watermelons.

I have beds all around the house and garage. The job took almost 5 hours and was not easy. $20/hour/kid. Many weeds are volunteers from my neighbor's Rose-of-Sharon and the trees in the area. With my damaged flexor tenon I can't safely get them out.

Reynolds wasn't in Rawhide. He was in a western called Riverboat, which was set in the 1830s on the Missouri, Mississippi, and Ohio rivers. He was fired from Riverboat. I was thinking Eastwood was fired from Riverboat too, but my memory may be off. I was only about 12 years old at the time.
Eastwood and Reynolds made a comedy together years later (1980s?) called City Heat, with Madeline Kahn, that was a terrific parody of the roles both played as police officers and private detectives in other movies. Reynolds drew a pistol with a 2" barrel, Eastwood drew a pistol with a 4" barrel, Reynolds drew a pistol with a 6" barrel, Eastwood drew a pistol with an 8" barrel - you get the idea. Good movie.
We used to grow some orange tomatoes, mostly for my grandfather, who couldn't tolerate the acidity of red tomatoes. They were pretty sliced in with the red tomatoes and green peppers. The Amish vegetable stand I patronize has orange tomatoes, but I don't think they are as flavorful as the red, which are simply delicious.

Good morning
Quick peach story then to the daily Zoom.
I've been taking peaches, halving them and cooking them in the air frier. (I really like to do it on the grill, but I don't cook outside when its over 105!) Anyway, cooking them a tiny bit, a pinch of cinnamon, brown sugar and butter and finish cooking. Yummy. And if you happen to have ice cream to put on them even better! There, dessert is served.
More later.
Let's be safe everyone.

Photographs…….a Herculean job here so I keep putting it off.
To ponder;

Something I don't worry about is what will happen to the albums and pictures since there is no one to leave them to. I know the people in the pictures but no one else would. Guess I need to look at them. Sarah always wanted to but it never happened.

I went through a lot of photos today. I sorted some to give to my son, some to my daughter, some to keep and some to discard. I enjoyed looking through them. I have many pics of me as a little girl - my mom always gave me home perms. My hair is totally straight these days but I was a cute little girl. lol
I gardened today. First, DH and I built a new compost bin. One older one I had didn't survive the big windstorm a week ago. I have two now, identical, and I would like to get one more. I also moved some plants that were poorly placed in my garden - too tall for their location. Tall flowers go in back of the bed! lol

Ugh. I'm in HOA-H3LL. And it's not even my house.
Mom lives in a 55+ community populated by recently retired individuals who miss their former careers in which they annoyed the shit out of other people. Mom finally agreed to have a humongous Bradford pear taken down; it's in the middle of her tiny front lawn and blocks what little light comes in the north-facing window.
The HOA wants: 2 copies of a 2-page application for an "architectural revision" form that includes signatures from her next-door-and across the street neighbors, the species of the tree to be removed and the replacement (no replacement= $700 fee to plant a tree elsewhere) and an 11x14" rendering of the lot, and a scale rendition of the current and proposed elevations because she wants to plant a tree in the back of the house.
The township planning and zoning department no longer issues official plot maps to homeowners "because of a right-to-know" law which sounds like the exact opposite I did a cursory google.
Also bonus points to the HOA committee that decided to stop having pre-printed copies of the form available at the clubhouse. They now have a kiosk with a printer at which you search for and print your desired form. I'm guessing most of the original homeowners who are now in their late 80s+ would be unable figure it out. Damn, I don't think my own mom is still tall enough to reach it.
In other news, the ceiling leaked again when DS and DH showered.

I came onto the site and was greeted with "Welcome! It looks like you're new here!"
No I'm not. Then, I put in my user name and password and got a prompt telling me I needed to change my password before I could access the "new" site.
Anyone else?
Oh, HB, what a kerfuffle! Does life really have to be that hard?!!!

Not yet, Beth. Weird things.
HB, what is the cost up there to have a tree removed? Tree work is expensive.I had three or four removed and some trimming done a couple of years ago and it wss $8500. The tree crew is a family affair and are about 100 mikes away. They have done our tree work for years. They have all the equipment so guess it's worth it.
Lots of pretty 6x6 1800 lb.bales of hay are appearing east of me. They are baling Mike's hay.I IIke to watch them roll it up, open the back of the baler and see the big bales roll out. We used to always go down and see and smell the new bales of hay. It smells so.good. Darwin's lessee is also baling. Like the saying goes 'make hay while the sun shines ' and everyone is. I miss seeing our meadow baled. We even enjoyed hauling it up close to the house so the grass could grow for the girls to graze. Guess I really sound country, right? I am!

@Lorita
I hear you on the high price of tree work. DH and I have had a number of trees taken out; the builder planed a lot of shorter-lived species and previous owner (Dad) didn't allow for growth. We've dealt with white pines, a gorgeous blue spruce that fell over after days of rain, birch clumps unsuited to our zone, 3 sand cherries planted on top of one another and a very $$$ weeping Norway spruce Based on tree work we've both had done, I'm guessing $800+/— $200. It's a good-sized tree but access is easy and there are no overhead wires to slow them down.
Once the tree is out, we'll get her a smaller tree for her back yard. She wants something flowering. I'm torn between a dogwood and a lollipop crabapple. Her lot is pocket sized— she only owns 20' from the house, but she backs up to a green zone and large pond.
HB0 -
Beth…..yes
HB…how about trimming the hell out of the tree
Lorita…only cost me $800 to remove a huge tree. Sounds expensive to live in the country…lol
