It can be. House calls out here involve mileage expense. This tree company travels in sort of a caravan. Two big trucks for the chips and.big wood. Another to pull the chipper and a couple of pickups for the workers.. They are good and clean up really well.
The last time they were here I wrote them a check. A few hours later Adrian called me and said the bank said that account was closed. I had a feed account I had closed and the checks were in the same.colored checkbook as the other account so picked up the wrong one. He had to send his grandson back for the check.
That same year I had half of my driveway fixed for $3500. He did a good job. There was one more big expense that year. Good thing is I didn't have to pay income taxes. No telling what that would cost now, even for diesel for the dozer. Everything is expensive, more so now. My loaf of French bread has gone up 50%. I can only imagine what custom baling costs now.
Watching Andy Griffith show. Good night, everyone 98 degrees with 108 heat index.

Speaking of trimming trees, my DIL was trimming Saturday, one of the larger limbs was hanging by a thread and she tried to pull it lose. Yes, it hit her in her face! Went to Urgent Care the next day, nothing broke but sure left one side of her pretty face swollen and black and blue.
I’m enjoying my new living quarters and even have a person provided to come for light housework once a week. The quality of the food is restaurant quality and I have a good breakfast every morning consisting of 2 eggs, 2 slices of beacon, French toast, hash browns, coffee and orange juice. They have a grill menu available anytime and Chef’s special for dinner and also heart health menu.
I now have to use oxygen all the time unless I’m sitting watching tv. I’m told to use the portable even when I walk to the car and around the apartment if I’m doing anything I have a longer cord I can use with my concentrator.
Looking for cooler weather later this week!

Lorita - it's hard to imagine Clint Eastwood at 29. Or Burt Reynolds for that matter.
HB - $32 a pound for King salmon sounds about right. Copper River King salmon goes for a lot more. This last spring we saw it for $99 a pound!! That was just madness.
Can you send over those three random teens to come work in my yard? 🙂
What is that HOA going to do with all of that information? Is the purpose solely to irritate the people who live there?
Carl - There's nothing like really fresh tomatoes. Add some burrata or fresh mozzarella, some fresh basil (after washing it thoroughly) and you've got a great caprese salad. Yum.
Beth - my mom gave me home perms too when I was little. I found one of those photos last night. Why, mom, why? I guess being the oldest, I was the experimental child. She never did that to my sister.
I was up really late last night - I stayed for all of Death Guild, which ended at 2:30am. I came to this site afterward, and it was down for maintenance. I don't know how long it was down .. I was able to get on around 11am this morning, but the site recognized that I'd been here before.
About the photos — I'm not tossing anything, except the duplicates. I emailed my cousins and I'll be getting together with them in a couple of weeks. They want the photos - I was pretty sure they would. 🙂 There are many, many from the 1930s - 1950s and I have no idea who's in the photos. My aunt may know, and I'll be seeing her as well. Definitely a large task, made larger because somehow I've become the repository of these things. I have everyone's photos. Now my cousins can take over, and I'm making things easy: everything is being sorted by family (if I know it), decade (for the labeled ones), and event (birthdays, parties, etc).

I had Cooper River Salmon in Seattle once. It was memorable!
Ron good to get an update. Sounds like you are pleased.
Bagpipe was tonight. I was given remedial instructions…lol

One of the best things I did with my mother was spend a couple of days going through all the photos in her house, identifying nearly everyone. She enjoyed it immensely and I have notes on the backs of the photos.

I picked up my cats from the Pet Hotel, $700 for 10 days for two cats. I have to budget cat care into my trip expenses.
Ron, I hope you are doing better with the oxygen.
I'm still resting from the trip.

HB had to LOL at your HOA hell. My son lives "independently" in a condo I own. I sit on the board for that HOA and I can't imagine putting in a kiosk. Bureaucracy in its finest form. 😀
Any chance the shower pan is cracked? That has happened at our condos when someone has remodeled or because the building is old and it is a mess when water mysteriously travels to the unit(s) below.

Morning 85 degrees at 7 s.m.,heat index 90. Hot one on the way.

Good morning. The first storm moved off the coast overnight and it's lovely at the moment. We were due to get 2+" of rain but the storm split and we ended up with a little less than an inch that held off conveniently until about 8pm.
Beth— Home perms are the work of the devil. It reminds me of the old joke "What takes 30 minutes and last nine months?" "A Toni Home Permanent".
Once when mom was helping a sister with a home perm, she decided to put a rod in my stick straight hair. I was 6 months old— she was going for the Gerber Baby look. This is why teenagers shouldn't be parents.Lorita— Sometimes small town and rural pricing is higher. MIL always paid more for things like cars and appliances. The lack of competition was a factor, I'm sure. I've never paid more than $750 for a tree including grinding out the stump.
Judith— Oh the indignity of being given remedial lessons on the pipes. It's less than 5 months until Christmas— you've got this.
The tree needs to go. Trimming is not an option. First of all, it's the responsible thing to do— it's a Bradford pear, a species which has become invasive here. It's illegal to sell them in our state now. I'm guessing it has never once been trimmed, and the canopy has become an outsized mess both for the truck and the space in which it's planted. Proper trimming of this species is to cut the branches way back and then thing out the entire structure of the canopy to main branches only— kind of like a commercial apple tree. It's at least as expensive to do this as removing it, the result in not aesthetically pleasing and it should be revisited in 4-8 years. And the root system is damaging the driveway and the lawn.
This picture is from 6 years ago. It doesn't show the lopsidedness and scale of the canopy. I took this from the street; the side walk is just outside the bottom of the frame; the yard is about one car length in depth.Ron— Your poor DIL. Yikes.
The breakfast sounds like something one might have at a nice hotel when on vacation. I'm glad the quality is there; you're too good a cook to suffer mediocrity.
You sound like you're kind of where mom is with her oxygen. She tends to favor her portable, but the 2-3 hour battery life puts restrictions on some activities which is unfortunate. She has a big at-home unit but I worry about the long hoses being a trip hazard with her poor vision.
Gothic G— DH had the DD of a cousin reach out of FB recently asking if he'd be willing to try to identify some of her late mom's photos. DH was able to name everyone and mostly able to identify the event or where they were taken. And he got to see pictures he didn't know existed of his parents. DH's dad died when he was 9 so this was a really treat.
Iris— Cat care is a legitimate expense in trip planning. They deserve somewhere nice. My friend who travels all the time (she's on Cayman Brac as we speak) usually leaves hers at home with her cleaner coming in to feed twice daily and pet the friendlier one. Another neighbor sometimes stops by in the evening to visit them as well. It works for her because the boys are more bonded with each other than people.
Goodlife— The shower pan could be an issue, but the plumber is betting on the drain connection given the description of when it happened and the amount of water. If it's that, he can use a product to reseal it. Fingers crossed because the tub is still an issue.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________
I made blueberry protein bites for myself for breakfast last night and already both DS and DH have had at them. I'm so glad I doubled the recipe and made a second pan.
I'm thinking I'll make a trip to Costco. DS and DH are nearly out of their preferred beverages; I should make a list. I want to swing past the nursery and make sure they have one of the trees mom is considering and scope out deer-resistant shrubs for myself.

I bought a house in 1995 with two young Bradfords in the yard. They were lovely until the ice storm of 2007 trimmed them back to bare trunks, and I replaced them with another species. They are certainly invasive. I can show you acreages that one cannot walk across because the Bradford tree trunks are too close together.

HB….beautiful Hostas….any way possible they will tolerate some sun? If you are going to plant another tree take a look at the Shademaster Honey Locust.
Ron…are we going to get some fishing pics?
GG…a lot posted here may be ancient history to you
Iris..are you rested yet? Where are we going next?
Oxygen hoses could really be a danger. Does the portable come with extra batteries???
Very hot but going to the jeweler with my daughter and then to get a pan au chocolate (sp) at our little French restaurant. I will have to travel outside my 1 mile zone but only by about 1/2 mile.
Lorita…a lot of services here charge a travel fee just to get in their truck. I do not use them.
Re the water leak…do eliminate the toilet and the sink by flushing/running water with some dye in them.

It's a shame to.lose that tree, HB. What is the problem with it? Darwin planted a Bradford Pear in my yard where the Magnolia was. I may be sorry because it has thorns. Our neighbor at the NW corner of the farm had one or two years ago and now they are on the west, North and south side of the meadow and all along the east side of the drive.. I notice three or four are now growing on the west side. There are several on the pond dam and are beautiful when they bloom.. Do all Bradford Pear trees have thorns? I ran over a little fallen limb three or four years ago and a thorn stuck in my tire. When I stopped it was on the top side, pulled it out and the tire deflated. The thorns are huge.
Heat index is 114. I went out and skimmed the green stuff off the water tank-guess the girls eat grass, then drink. Watered the planters and went to the mailbox...I was so hot when I came in. My neighbor decided he would pull weeds in the ditch this morning so just checked on him -:he is inside and okay.
Ron, years ago after an ice storm.Charles and I were out looking at the damage and a.big limb fell on my shoulders and back and knocked me down. Glad it didn't fall on my head Trees can be dangerous when damaged.
You all.be careful in the heat.

Good morning.
I finally feel rested but my knees still hurt.
The history of Mt Rushmore is fascinating! The area of the Black Hills of South Dakota where the monument is located was sacred to the indigenous people, the Lakota. The Lakota were called "Sioux" by a French reporter who misunderstood what he was being told. Sioux actually means "snake" in the Lakota language. The Lakota don't use the term Siuox but that name has gained prominence. The Lakota called the sacred mountain the Six Grandfathers. This area is home to the Lakota, the Dakota and the Nakota people.
In 1868 the Lakota were granted perpetual rights to the mountain and the Black Hills by the Fort Laramie Treaty. But in 1874, General George Custer made a mapping expedition on the area. Two miners who accompanied him discovered gold in the Black Hills. This discovery caused the treaty to be broken, as prospectors came out west to search for gold. Then more people came, pushing the Lakota away and eventually onto reservations.
In 1923, a South Dakota historian wanted to develop a tourist attraction for South Dakota. His idea was to feature western characters, such as Chief Red Cloud and Buffalo Bill. He contacted Gutzon Borglum, who had begun carving the confederate statues on Stone Mountain in Georgia. Borghum disputed with the Georgians and left that project so another sculpter had to complete Stone Mountain.
Borglum's idea was to feature national people instead of local people, and he suggested presidents. He first thought of Washington and Lincoln, later added Jefferson and Roosevelt. These presidents were chosen to represent the founding of the nation (Washington), the expansion of the nation (Jefferson), the development of the nation and conservation (Roosevelt) and preservation the nation (Lincoln).
Work began in 1927, initially with private funds. 450,009 tons of rock were removed by dynamite and jackhammer, much of the rock still at the base of the carvings. The plan was to extend the statues to waist level, but funding was lacking. Borghum died in 1941 and the final touches were completed by his son.
In 1980 the Lakota people's claim to their sacred mountain was affirmed, and they were offered financial compensation, but they refused, wanting their mountain back.
Mt Rushmore in the daytime. Notice that Lincoln's face is not fully carved.
Another view
A closer view if Lincoln. There is a Presidential Walk through the trees to get a bit closer to the statues and to read material about the presidents.
Info about Lincoln (excuse my thumb in the picture.)
The walk included Borglum's studio with photos of how the carvings was completed.
There was also a dining area and an ice cream shop with Thomas Jefferson's original homemade ice cream recipe. I tried it, it was okay.
Mt Rushmore is a fascinating historical site and is worth the visit for all ages.

Thank you, Iris for the interesting information and the pictures. Has any work been done since 1941? Is the reason Lincoln's face wasn't completed because the sculpture passed away? Hard to imagine that much rock being moved. The carvings are so lifelike. Did you hear or read how tall the carvings are? What a great trip you had.
Where is the carving of Crazy Horse being done?

Thaanks Iris!

Lorita, the faces of the presidents are 60 feet tall. Interestingly, the entirety of Mt Rushmore can fit inside Crazy Horse's head! I will post later about the Crazy Horse statue.
No work has been done since 1941. By current statute, no further work can be added to this monument, only repair work if needed.
Earlier that day, we visited the Journey Museum, which details the full history of South Dakota, from prehistoric times to modern times. There were dinosaurs, including this T rex (a model).
South Dakota used to be under water from a great sea.
A bison hide specimen--very soft
Cradleboards for babies and shoes—originally made out of porcupine quills—later glass beads were incorporated.
A tipi with a hologram of a Lakota elder speaking
Last survivor of Little Big Horn
South Dakota entered space travel in 1934.
The Journey Museum has many more fascinating exhibits! South Dakota is more than just Mt Rushmore.

Judith— Extra batteries don't come with the POC. They are available to buy; I'm not sure how much the ones for mom's unit cost but they generally run between $250 and $500 out-of-pocket. On 3L of O2, a battery lasts a little over 2 hrs. I can charge it in the car but it's a slower charge. I don't like to drive to the city unless I have to— the train is free; there's no need to park and I don't have to deal with traffic on I-95 through ongoing construction.
The Hostas do tolerate some sun based on how they performed before I transplanted them. Her front garden is on the north side of the house. The nursery was really picked over. We may decide to wait until spring. She wants something ornamental— crabapple, fringe tree or maybe dogwood. The latter 2 are native to the area.
Lorita— Bradford pears are the thornless cultivar, but when they spread it's the thorned species Callery pear that crowds out native species important to area wildlife. There are entire tree farms near me that have been overtaken by them. The pond access behind the house is choked off by the invasive species. They are not a good tree structurally with the top-heavy canopy and weak crotches that make them risky in storms. Plus, they're really messy with leaves that shed in mid-December after lawns have been raked and don't break down easily.Got to go grab hoagies for dinner.

Iris, that was so interesting! Thank you!

HB - A Toni home perm .. I think that's what my mom used on me. My hair went from straight to puff in, I guess, 30 min. And it smelled terrible.
All of this tree talk reminds me that I need to schedule an appointment to get a few of our trees looked at and possibly removed before winter.
Judith - I'm not as young as you think. Judging from things people say, I think I'm of a similar vintage as HB and Beth +/- a couple of years. I just do age inappropriate things like hanging out at goth clubs. 🙂
Iris - Your photos are fantastic. I really don't know much about Mt. Rushmore or the Lakotas. Now I do. Really interesting history. What an interesting sign about Dewey Beard.
Of course, interesting as all of that is, I was most interested in the model of the T.rex. Back in the day I took an advanced paleontology class, and every week the professor would give us a tub of fossils, and we had to identify everything in the tub, including the location and the time period. One week it was a tub of clams, ammonites, etc. from that interior sea that you described. I loved that class.
And tonight? Back to the photos! I'm getting it done.

So.very interesting, Iris. Looking forward to something about Crazy Horse. I knew the carving was huge but not that big. On your visit to Mount Rushmore did they talk about it or have anything about the carved out areas inside the mountain?
HB, the Bradford Pear trees on our place came from what, I guess, were the Thornless kind. But, it is beautiful on our farm when they're all in bloom. I need to keep the one in the yard trimmed as it grows.
We have a huge crab apple tree in what used to be the garden. One year daddy made preserves or something like that from the little apples and it was so good but labor intensive for sure.
It has been so.hot here today but when I let Stormy out and in a while back there was a really good wind from the east, which is unusual for us.
Iris, hope you're getting rested up from your trip. Was it hot during your time in SD?
Good night, everyone.

Have you read about Jackie the eagle? She was found in some water, unable to fly, and was transported to the Ojai Raptor Center to their ICU for treatment. Apparently she was attacked by two subadult eagles. She is now out of ICU but still is in danger. Here is some more info about her.

GG, the Journey Museum has a large department about the geology of South Dakota. Along with the dinosaurs there were aquatic reptiles.
This scary creature looks like fiction but apparently it did exist.
We visited The Mammoth Site, which is one of the largest sites in the eorld of mammoth fossils. We watched a movie about how the mammoths were trapped in the marshy water and couldn't get out. They were trapped the same way the mammoths and other creatures were trapped by tar at LA Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles.
Spine and other bones
Skull—All of these specimen are enclosed in a building to better preserve the them. The public is allowed to volunteer to work on the fossils.
They gave the fossils names. The above is Napoleon Bone-A-Part.
A reconstruction of a mammoth.
Another replica of a mammoth
Here is more info about The Mammoth Site.
Home - The Mammoth Site
It's worth a trip to South Dakota for anyone interested is seeing real fossils and perhaps even working on them, if you know what you are doing.
Lorita, the temp reached 114 degrees, a record high, on our last day at the Badlands.

Iris, I am absolutely loving your photos and the information you're sharing regarding your trip. The Mammoth museum looks so interesting. Thank you!
GG, HB, others - you're as young as you feel! A study has shown that people who have a positive attitude and outlook toward aging live an average of 7.5 years longer. So embrace who you are and whatever age you are.
Still hot here. No matter how hot it is, I haven't once woke up and thought, "I wish it was winter time." And I never will!

Beth…when I am stationary I feel about 40. Standing and walking I am back to 85 with some health problems…lol
Iris…South Dakota under water?????
0 -
Good morning.
Judith, that sea covered South Dakota 140 million years ago. Right now it is dry. South Dakota is Prairie land, which is the next step up from being a desert. South Dakota is prone to wildfires, just like we are here in SoCal, due to high temps, strong winds and dry brush. Also, now they are in a drought. Ranchers have to water their cattle.

It's.99 degrees with heat index of 114. Plains and prairies, what's the difference? I think we must also be prairie. I have heard it called both. we have what we call prairie hay. I feel sorry for all the animals that were trapped- what an awful way to due. Did it say why they couldn't get out - deep mud or quicksand?
0 -
Iris - Yeah, that scary creature is a mosasaur. I wouldn't have liked to run into one of those guys. Ichthyosaurs were also present, (I can see a partial photo of one underneath the description of the ichthyosaur), but they were more like dolphins. I wouldn't want to run into one of those guys either.
It looks like a very cool exhibit.
That interior seaway covered most the great plains during the Cretaceous (the last era of the dinosaurs). Here's what it looked like (I got this from wikipedia).
The Campanian is part of the Cretaceous.
Thank you for letting me geek out here for a bit! 🙂
Beth and Judith - When I get back from the gym, or when I'm physically at Death Guild and dancing, I feel like I'm about 30. If I'm really tired, then …. then I feel like I'm about 90. 😄
Speaking of gym- it was great today. Lots of boxing! I'm feeling nice and loose.
Getting ready to do my 4pm DJ session. Today I'm serving up dark synth - Like this: Ice Queen by Dead Lights.
